The social media analytics startup Topsy Labs, Inc., a firm that specializes in analyzing Twitter conversations, has been acquired by Apple in what The Wall Street Journal reports as a deal worth more than USD 200 million.
Because it is one of the handful of services that have been given access to the data “fire hose” by Twitter, Inc., Topsy has access to the full stream of tweets since 2006, and this is what it uses to analyze sentiments on Twitter and measure the reach of a message or hashtag for its clients.
According to The Wall Street Journal, an unnamed Apple spokesperson confirmed the deal, but refused to discuss the acquisition any further. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” commented the spokesperson.
