Facebook will begin demoting “spammy” posts that encourage users to like, tag, share and comment on its latest update on mobile and web platforms.
Popularly known as a tactic called “engagement bait”, these posts cheats on the social media networking site’s News Feed algorithm for a greater reach. More posts are getting prioritized by the said technique, causing it to appear more on the user’s feed.
According to the official blog of Facebook, it will scan all individual and pages posts on its website through a machine learning model that can detect different types of engagement bait. A stricter implementation for this feature is also expected for those who handle Facebook pages of various businesses and organizations. Publishers will be given a time to adapt to the new algorithm.
This latest effort from Facebook is part of the company’s mission to reduce sensational and misleading content online.
Moreover, posts that ask people for help, advice, or recommendations will not be adversely affected.
