While almost everyone in the technology beat knows Samsung is shipping a prodigious number of mobile devices these past few months, the question that remains is exactly how much? Strategy Analytics apparently is in the know, and has said that the Korean manufacturer managed to ship out 56.9 million phones in Q3. To put that in perspective, 162 million smartphones were sold globally, which means that 1/3 of the all smartphones made during Q3 was a Samsung mobile device. Naturally, Samsung’s market share has ballooned, and currently sits at 35% worldwide. And apparently, that’s a record.

“This was the largest number of units ever shipped by a smartphone vendor in a single quarter,” Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics’ executive director, said in a statement.

That also means that Samsung shipped more than twice the phones than their bitter rival Apple, which puts in perspective Apple’s legal victory over their Korean competitor in the billion dollar ruling in favor of the Cupertino company. This also means that the current mobile race is almost officially a two horse race. “Samsung and Apple combined now account for over half of all smartphones shipped worldwide, up from around one-third a year ago,” said Neil Shah, an analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Volumes have polarized around those two brands.”
