Toyota Corolla is the world’s most popular car

    0

    Toyota-Corolla

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced that cumulative global sales of the Toyota Corolla surpassed 40 million in July, reaching 40.01 million units.  This milestone marks another historic achievement for the Corolla, Toyota’s perennial global car.

Marking the milestone, Corolla chief engineer Shinichi Yasui said, “I feel this car has been nurtured by people all over the world and I am very proud to have contributed to its foundation and grateful to all those who have owned and loved their Corollas. The key to the Corolla’s success is the faithful passing down of its original development concept from Tatsuo Hasegawa: that the Corolla must bring happiness and well-being to people around the world.”

The Corolla was originally designed to meet the changing needs of Japanese commuters in the mid-1960s. Then chief engineer Tatsuo Hasegawa recognized that with Japan’s industry expanding, most consumers’ daily commuting time was increasing. The need to get around in a personal vehicle was therefore growing and this insight led Hasegawa to conceptualize the first Corolla, with his guiding principles defining the vehicle ever since: always evolving and designed to meet consumer needs in each market.

When the first Corolla rolled off the production line, many basic safety features were still optional. Later, to meet the needs of families, Toyota decided to include many of these features as standard. Toyota’s commitment to pursue higher and higher levels of quality and continue adding new standard features to the affordably priced Corolla has helped ensure that families around the world continue to choose it more than any other nameplate.

The Corolla, currently produced at 15 plants worldwide, accounts for one in five vehicles sold in Toyota’s 76-year history.

Challenge the Terrain with the all-new Isuzu D-MAX

    0

    D-Max

One of the country’s best pickups has just become better as Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) recently introduced the much-awaited All-New Isuzu D-MAX, which arrives in the country poised to Challenge the Terrain.

At the launch event held last September 18 at the World Trade Center, the unveiling of the new truck was led by Nabuo Izumina, IPC president, and Katsumasa Nagai, Engineering Division Executive/Director of the Board and senior executive officer of Isuzu Motors Ltd.

Longer, wider, and taller, the All-New D-MAX is also made to be sleeker and tougher than ever before. The new pickup is built around three design philosophies; perfect proportion, aggressive form, and innovative structure. Externally, it is designed with a fluid appearance to ensure visual harmony without losing the D-MAX’s trademark sporty, powerful style.

Other than sporting an appealing design, the All-New D-MAX is aerodynamic too as it was tested in various wind tunnels that include the facility of the Japan Railway Research Institute—the same one used in testing the country’s famous bullet trains. As a result, the All-New D-MAX has one of the lowest coefficients of drag among pickups, which contributes to its exceptional fuel efficiency.

    D-Max2

The All-New D-MAX is as tough as it looks. Coming from a long lineage of reliable, durable and fuel-efficient trucks, the latest model is designed to take on any job, anytime. Its heavy-duty chassis and large cargo bed mean the pickup can accommodate the bulkiest loads. Its body structure, constructed from high-tensile strength steel, is more rigid than the previous model’s. Combined with a new superior suspension system composed of independent double wishbone with coil springs in front and semi-elliptical over-slung leaf springs in the rear (for LS variants), the All-New D-MAX becomes capable of carrying a heavy payload while at the same time improving its driving performance and vehicle stability.

Under the muscular hood of the All-New D-MAX LS and LT 4×4 variants is Isuzu’s tried and tested 4JJ1-TC 3.0-liter Common Rail Direct Injection with Turbocharger and Intercooler Diesel engine that makes 146Ps @ 3,800rpm and 294Nm @ 1,400rpm to 3,400rpm. The base variant LT 4×2 and single cab are strengthened by Isuzu’s new 4JK1-TC 2.5-liter Common Rail Direct Injection with Turbocharger and Intercooler Diesel engine that produces 109Ps @ 3,400rpm and 280Nm from 1,800 to 2,200rpm. Besides providing optimum power, both engines are also fuel efficient.

Matching the power plant is a new 5-speed automatic transmission (available for the LS 4×2 and 4×4 variants) that is thoroughly modernized with a sequential shift function that makes manual gear-shifting possible in an automatic transmission.

The All-New D-MAX boasts of one of the highest ground clearances among pickups with a 235mm height for the LS 4×4 and 225mm for the LT 4×4 and LS 4×2. This makes the truck suitable over unpaved roads and flooded situations. Supplementing its suspension system are new and bigger wheels that do not compromise the truck’s riding comfort and still give a stylish appearance. The LS 4×4 is equipped with 225/65 R17 tires while the LS 4×2 and LT have 245/70 R16 tires.

Boosting the off -road capability of the pickup is Isuzu’s new 4WD Terrain Command Select Dial that allows the driver to switch from two-wheel-drive to four-wheel-drive high even while traveling at speeds of up to 100kph. This can be done easily, too, as the driver only needs to twist a knob on the console. The All-New D-MAX also has an approach angle of 30 degrees and a departure angle of 22.7 degrees, and can be tilted sideways on a 49-degree slope. All 4WD variants are equipped with a Limited Slip Differential, allowing the pickup to take on any obstacle and challenge the terrain.

The All-New D-MAX LS comes equipped with a host of safety features for the driver and passengers. The pickup’s cabin protects its occupants by means of a safety shell made from high-tensile strength steel, further bolstered by side-impact beams, dual front airbags, and Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) seatbelts with pre-tensioner and load limiter. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) supplemented by Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the new Brake Assist (BA) guarantee secure stopping power even in adverse conditions.

    D-Max3

Providing both vision enhancement and aesthetic quality to Isuzu’s latest pickup are projector headlamps with Fresnel Blister, front fog lamps, large side-view mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, a high-mount third stop lamp that can be seen from a farther distance, and jewel-like LED combination tail lamps.

The All-New D-MAX, especially the LS variants, takes comfort to a whole new level, starting with a spacious cabin that offers improved head, shoulder, and leg room. The pickup’s leather seats are finished in elegant mahogany shade, and the driver’s seat is power-adjustable by six different ways while the rear seat has three adjustable headrests and a center armrest, providing car-like comfort. Adding convenience are 15 storage compartments and 10 cup holders that are placed within easy reach of all occupants.

Placed in the All-New D-MAX’s sculptured and elegant dashboard are Electroluminescent Meters with a new Multi-Information Display that attractively provide data on essential driving conditions. A new premium audio system, composed of a 2-DIN CD/MP3/microUSB/AUX IN jack/tuner with Bluetooth connectivity and a six-way speaker system that includes first-in-class ceiling-mounted exciter speakers, complement the new meters. The audio unit can also be accessed via control buttons on the three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The LT and single cab variants are equipped with power windows, central door locks, a single-DIN audio system, and durable vinyl seats. The All-New D-MAX is available in five colors: Cosmic Black, Garnet Red, Ash Beige, Titanium Silver and Splash White. Prices are: Php 697,000 – single cab 4×2; Php 857,000 – LT 4×2 MT; Php 1,144,000 – LS 4×2 MT; Php 1,153,000 – LT 4×4 MT; Php 1,196,000 – LS 4×2 AT; Php 1,398,000 – LS 4×4 MT; and Php 1,457,000 – LS 4×4 AT.

Like the bestselling model it replaced, the All-New D-MAX is being built at IPC’s world-class manufacturing plant at the Laguna Technopark in Biñan. This ensures continued job security for the Filipino workforce, a move that is in line with IPC’s commitment to strengthen the Philippine automotive industry and the domestic economy. At present, 90% of Isuzu models, including the Crosswind AUV and truck and bus models, are assembled locally.

    WHAT’S HOT:

    • Great size
    • Full Windows 8
    • Excellent battery life

    WHAT’S NOT:

    • Grainy screen
    • A little on the heavy side

    BOTTOM LINE:

    • If you’re looking for a very useful tablet without shelling out a lot, give this guy a spin.

      Acer-Iconia-W3_

Next to my smartphone, my tablet is the single most important piece of technology in my gadget arsenal. It doesn’t really do anything my smartphone can’t, but the large screen, larger battery and its own LTE connection make it so much more convenient. Coupled with a keyboard, it makes for an unstoppable content production machine. My only real complaint is that my particular tablet runs a mobile OS. Sometimes, you just need the whole desktop experience and all the power that ecosystem brings in order to accomplish tasks. The Acer lconia W3 is the answer to this problem. The 8.1-inch slate runs the full Windows 8 experience.

The W3 is, in a word, handy. The overall footprint of the W3 is about the size of a large paperback, though it’s a little heavier, tipping the scales about over a pound. It’s not small enough to fit in a pants pocket, so if you want to carry it around, you might want to have a bag handy. While it’s light enough for me to carry around in my hand all day, the extra weight for the hardware required for Windows 8 might make it a little inconvenient for some.

The back is a textured, matte plastic that looks convincingly like stainless steel. The sides of this particular unit had a white trim, and the screen is surrounded by a healthy bezel. Controls are sparse, as is expected from a current-gen tablet. You have a power button on one edge, the volume buttons on the other, and the Windows button on the front. There is also a microSD slot, a microUSB slot, into which goes the included OTG cable, beside which is a mini-HDMI port. The earphone jack and speaker grilles round off the bottom edge, along with the power plug.

Navigation is mainly achieved via touch, which is exactly what Windows 8 is designed for. Moving through menus, the start menu and folders is smooth and zippy. The W3 runs a 1.8GHz Atom processor paired with 2GB of RAM. It won’t break any land speed records, but it handles the Windows 8 Ul just fine. At no point did it struggle with the operating system, so I wasn’t left wanting for more RAM or a little more processing power. It’s not really meant to muscle through apps and programs, but it does the job just fine.

Multitasking was likewise simple for the W3. Multiple browser windows, a word document and some music proved no challenge for the device. Basically any task you would do on a regular day, away from your main desktop, should be okay on the device. Your text input will be limited to tapping on the screen’s virtual keyboard, so a separate wired (via the OTG cable) or Bluetooth keyboard would be a great addition to really make the Iconia W3 shine.

The screen is plenty bright for all your needs. Direct sunlight poses a little problem and causes some glare, but it is more than usable. It is, however, a little wanting in the sharpness department. The screen is grainy and has a rather narrow viewing angle. Skew your eyes a little off center, and the colors start to get a little odd. This isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, and there are far worse screens out there, but if you are very picky about image quality, this might be something to consider.

The inclusion of the Atom processor helps with the device’s battery life. The low power draw by the efficient chip let the device run a whole day at work, that’s just over eight hours, with no problem. This was with a constant connection to the Internet, brightness at about half, and even connecting to a Bluetooth keyboard every so often for a quick document or two. Even if you did need to carry around the power brick, it’s a reasonably small device that plugs straight into the wall outlet. If eight hours plus of battery life isn’t enough for you, the adapter is small enough to toss in a bag or backpack and forget. The roughly 30GB internal storage might be a little lacking, but more storage can be had via a microSD card, if you need it.

Being the first eight-incher built for Windows 8, the W3 has a unique position in the market. The OS works well on the device, making for a very handy, versatile tool, though it’s not without its shortcomings. The screen, while it has a high enough resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, is a little grainy for my taste, and the narrow viewing angles might be a problem for sharing the screen or getting a comfortable position that is anything far removed from looking at it head-on. Still, it’s a handy device that offers you great battery life, a powerful OS and a convenient size, particularly given a price point below PHP 20,000. If you need a tablet to keep you company all day, no matter where you find yourself, the Acer Iconia W3 isn’t a bad bet.

    BOTTOMLINE:

    • Shutterbugs will fall head over heels with the Nokia Lumia 92S’s awesome camera partnered with equally delightful features.

      Nokia-Lumia-925_

Not so long ago, the first integration of the camera to the mobile phone seemed such a major milestone as landing the first man on the moon. Fast-forward to present day, and no, a round-trip vacation to the moon is still not possible. On the other hand, camera phones are now a big player in the mainstream market. The camera has become such a fundamental part of the mobile phone that companies are doing all sorts of tricks to outdo competition. Here, we’ll take a closer look at the Nokia Lumia 925, a phone and a camera in one.

Emerging out of its box, what best describes this first encounter is the absurd pick-up line, “Hello there, you pretty thing.” Compared to my tattered call and text Nokia X2 handset, it is lightyears away from the powerful features and build of the Lumia 925. This might be the upgrade I’ve been waiting for.

The Lumia 925, an upped version of the 920, has a rectangular design that resembles a chocolate bar at 0.33 inches thick. Compared to its colorful polycarbonate Lumia predecessors, the 925 has an aluminum frame and is only available in white, black, and gray. The back is a matte plate that feels good to touch. Speakers are located at the rear along with the PureView Carl Zeiss camera and LED flash up top. Another flip will show the magnificent 4.5-inch AMOLED display bordered with a glossy black bezel and overlaid with protective Gorilla Glass. Also on the front are a 1.2 MP camera and three capacitive backlit buttons —back, home, and search-rests at the bottom.

Moving on to the aluminum sides, you’ll see a microSIM card slot, a microUSB port, and audio jack atop the phone while on the right side, there’s the volume rocker, power button, and camera button.

Display is undeniably astounding; the 4.5-inch PureMotion+ AMOLED Clearblack display is the Brad to my Angelina. If the Windows Ul and live tiles leave you in awe, a 1080p Electric Shock K-pop music video will definitely wow with an explosion of fuchsias, flashy detailed clothing, and animated vivid colors. While the speakers produced a bit of a flat loud sound, a pair of headphones or loud speakers can make up for its mediocrity.

Fawning adjectives aside, one notable feature of the Lumia 925 is the sensitivity of the touch screen that was still responsive to my tissue-covered forefinger. As for the Corning Gorilla lass 2, it held up pretty well against my pointy ball pen, so it will probably survive more gruesome scratch attempts in the future.

The trickiest part of the review was getting used to the Windows Phone 8 OS and interface, which gives off an other worldly feel if you are an Android and iOS user like me. But, you’ll eventually get the hang of it especially with the pretty Live Tiles that updates to real-time content.

We must mention the lithe performance of the 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon chip of the Lumia 925 tagged with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. Opening applications were fluid and the smooth game run of Jetpack Joyride warped me right inside the endless coin collecting game. Battery performance was okay; the 2000mAh battery can last you up to at least a day given moderate phone usage. I’ve been using the unit for days now and there was an instance that the power suddenly drained out on me, but that was maybe just a freak occurrence.

This review wouldn’t be much of use if we don’t dwell on the impressive 8.7-megapixel PureView camera with Carl Zeiss optics, the bread and butter of the Lumia 925. Paired with complementing camera apps and features, you can forego other digital point and shoot cameras and go with this one. Test shots delivered rich colored and fine detailed outputs even in poor-light conditions. I took a video outside my house, bobbed the phone up and down, made quick side to side motions, and the 1080p video was still pleasant, no pixilation, with only a little ghosting.

Getting to the good part, the Lumia 925 has astounding camera features on top of the common ones-like the Nokia Smart Cam, Cinemagraph, Photobeamer, and the Pro Camera App. With the Smart Cam app you are entitled to numerous feats through simultaneous processing of a single photo. Change Face allows picking the best smile and face in a series of shots. Action Shot captures moving objects across the frame and creates a single photo of the subject appearing in multiple places. Best Shot takes multiple photos so you can pick the best one. Motion Focus mode snaps at moving objects keeping the subject in focus and the background blurred. Remove Moving Objects allows the manual removal of pesky photo bombers. Rounding them all off is the crowd-favorite Cinemagraph feature, wherein you can hold the phone up, record, and pick the parts you’d like to animate in the frame; it’s the easiest way to create animated GIF files. Finally, with the PhotoBeamer app, you can send those candid and gorgeous photos directly to your web browser for your friends to see.

Although still lacking with essential apps like lnstagram, the Windows Phone 8 is a breath of fresh air if you’ve been an Android and iOS dweller for the longest time. I don’t believe in love at first sight, but I sure did fall for the Nokia Lumia 925’s solid performance and astounding camera features.
