Razer and Queen of PH Cosplay come together for C. Visayas quake victims

    20131103-222344.jpg

Razer C.E.O., Co-founder and Creative Director Min-Liang Tan visited the Philippines shortly after the devastating quake that hit the Central Visayas region and leveled several historical churches. Determined to show the world that gamers are people who can make a difference, Min donated all the proceeds from the sale of Razer apparel at the recently-concluded Pinoy Gaming Festival. Razer raised USD 5,850 and generously split the difference to come up with USD 10,000 to help the plight of our brothers and sisters affected by the terrible tragedy.

“I applaud the gamers in the Philippines who stepped up and contributed to this cause,” said Tan. “They have definitely defied the stay-at-home gamer stereotype and played a significant role during this time of disaster. I am heartened by the passionate fans in the country. We sold out of many popular apparel designes and sizes on the first day, and I am positive we could have rased more otherwise.”

To help drum up additional support, Razer sought the help of none other than Alodia, who made an appearance during the event, as well as her sister Ashley who fronted an amazing performance with her band.

“The recent earthquake has made me realize that there are many gamers in the Philippines who are willing to do their part to help those in need,” said Alodia. “My sister and I are deeply inspired by their incredible spirit and we are proud to be a part of Razer’s initiative.

The funds raised will be donated to the Philippine Red Cross to help in their relief operations.

Epson bags another award for printers

    XP-950

Seiko Epson Corporation has another feather in its cap. Their EP-976A3 all-in-one (AIO) printer was just given a Japanese 2013 Good Design Award, reserved for designs and products that enrich life and society as a whole.

The AIO printer gives consumers high performance that can print out A3 sheets with the same footprint as an A4 printer, allowing both business and home users to save space without compromising performance. The printer is able to reproduce crisp A3 photos and documents with amazing detail, and its clean, compact design allows more installation options in a given space.

“When a user prints over WiFi, the output tray, which automatically extends, and the control panel, which automatically tilts upward, make perfect sense when design is considered from a behavioral standpoint. The user interface is similarly designed with affordance*, suggesting the next action to perform on the touch panel. In addition, the minimalist design is beautiful, a result of Epson’s efforts to provide A3 output from a printer with A4 compactness. The flow of operations is designed for true ease of use, with affordances that suggest the next selection,” the judges beamed. Epson has always aimed to improve both lifestyles and work processes, and this device is testament to that aim.

The Japanese Good Design Awards were established to recognize designs that positively impact lifestyles, industry, and society in general. Designs are evaluated particularly in terms of effectiveness and functionality.

LG G2 draws enthusiastic global reviews

    38

    Untitled

After its much anticipated global launch on August, the LG LTE-capable flagship, G2 has since been drawing praises from various internet tech experts.

    “Best smartphone in the world”

Stuff Magazine, a British tech and gadgets publication, said, “Its 5.2in, 1080p screen is razor sharp, with superb viewing angles and inky blacks; its quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor handles demanding tasks with nonchalant ease; its 13MP camera takes amazing photos… All that, and its battery just keeps on going,” the prestigious magazine quoted.  It also hailed the LG G2 as “power-crazy”, “close to flawless”, and “the New King of Android”, among other acclaims.

    Unmatched performance, design, user experience

Technology news and media network The Verge acknowledges the G2 as “a powerhouse on multiple levels” which “checks off every spec you could ask for”.  Whereas, consumer electronics web magazine Engadget labels it as the “swiftest Android phone we’ve seen yet”, while information technology website ZDNet positions the G2 to “raise the Android bar”.

GSM Arena, a website that specializes exclusively on mobile handsets, touted the G2 a “beautiful monster”, with the mixture of all of its top-notch specs as enumerated in this article. The former website also commends the smartphone’s user experience functions.

In line with its key message “Learning from You”, LG G2 has captured the global market with its revolutionary human-inspired components.

    What’s new, KitKat?

Screen Shot 2013-11-02 at 2.14.04 AM

At long last, Google unwraps its newest treat for the digital sweet tooth. Here are 12 new features you will find in the latest version of Google’s open-source OS, Android 4.4 KitKat:

    kk-home

    Clean is in

The KitKat OS carries with it a few design tweaks to make the visuals smoother and easier on the eyes. The status and notifications bar is now translucent, and in effect, the screen looks a bit bigger and your home screen wallpaper now takes up more space than it did before.

    KitKat_Screenshots_-_1_verge_super_wideScreenshot from The Verge

Add to that a more condensed version of Android’s standard font (Roboto) and you’ve got yourself a lighter and cleaner look.

    immersive mode

When they said full-screen, they meant it

An “immersive mode” lets you hide all your system UI elements like your status bar and your navigation buttons. It is activated by a simple gesture that involves swiping up or down from the top or bottom of the display.

    art

Album art on your lock screen

This version brings in a new interactive design for the lock screen whenever you’re playing music or movies. For instance, if you’re listening to an album, you’ll be able to see the album art in all its full-screen glory on the lock screen, together with a few controls that let you play, pause, skip to the next track, return to the previous track, or seek to a specific time.

    messages

    Hangouts: the new messaging center

Built into KitKat is the revamped Hangouts app, which now integrates SMS and MMS. That’s right—Android bids goodbye to the old Messages app and consolidates text messages, instant messages, and even voice call activity into one place on your phone. Hangouts will now be your go-to app for these tasks.

    emoji

    Emoji, emoji everywhere

KitKat puts Emoji right in your Google Keyboard, which means you can put those teensy icons in an SMS, a Facebook chat message, the subject line of an email on Gmail, and everywhere else.

    kk-android-44

    Good Guy Google

Google also promises that entry-level or low-spec’d devices can also get a fast and responsive experience on KitKat. The company claims that the new system runs smoothly on devices with as little as 512 of RAM.

Low-power sensor batching = your best friend

The new platform supports hardware sensor batching, which is said to immensely reduce power consumed by ongoing sensor activities.

The Android developer website reads, “With sensor batching, Android works with the device hardware to collect and deliver sensor events efficiently in batches, rather than individually as they are detected. This lets the device’s application processor remain in a low-power idle state until batches are delivered.”

Sensor batching ultimately allows your device to run for a longer period of time because it uses power more efficiently.

    kk-sensors-moves-n5

    A few steps more?

KitKat adds support for two composite sensors: the step detector and step counter. As of today, they only work on the Nexus 5, but Google claims that they are currently working with their chipset partners to bring them to other new devices.

    kk-contactless-card

    Tag! You’re paying!

A feature called Host Card Emulation (HCE) lets your NFC-capable device pair up with NFC apps for payments, loyalty programs, card access, transit passes, and other custom services. KitKat also comes with a new Reader Mode that lets you use apps as readers for HCE cards and for other NFC transactions.

    IR Blaster! Victory dance!

KitKat also brings native support for infrared blaster technology, together with a new API and system service that enables developers to create apps that take advantage of the feature.

    voice

Google Now is at your beck and call

While it previously worked only inside Google Now, saying “OK Google” when you’re on the home screen now launches voice search, too.

According to The Verge, Google Now is also a left-to-right swipe away from the home screen.

    kk-print-land-n5

    Cloud activities

KitKat comes with the ability to work with Cloud Printing, which means you can print using any printer connected to Google Cloud Print and printers that have apps found in the Play Store.

Apart from Cloud Printing, apps such as Quickoffice now let users save files to cloud apps like Google Drive.

    Nexus5_tilted

The Nexus 5 is the first device to be shipped with Android 4.4 KitKat, which means it is also the first device to have all these new features. Follow THIS LINK to know more about the new Nexus!

Watch Google’s first Nexus 5 commercial! *sniff*

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ0XTJqFLIE

The Nexus 5 FINALLY drops, sells out instantly

    20131101-203636.jpg

Google has finally seen fit to release the Nexus 5, and the good news is that all the specs it was rumored to have are true. It has a 4.95 inch screen which we’ll just call an even 5, an 8 megapixel main camera, 2GB of RAM (so it’s not the 3GB beast we were hoping for), and your choice of 32 o 16GB of storage. It will have a quad-core, 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, wireless charging, LTE connectivity and a 2,300mAh battery. It’s also bristling with connectivity options, bearing everything from NFC, to Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

Google has chosen to leave out the microSD card slot, which is a shame, but the price tag, starting at an attractive USD349 for the 16GB version, is pretty hard to beat, considering this LG-made bad boy can roll with all of the current-generation flagships. Amazing as it is, the killer feature really is the price, which lead to the phone selling out minutes after it went live. If you want some of the 4.4 KitKat awesomeness that is the new Nexus, you might have to wait a little while. No word has been given as to the availability of the device here in the Philippines, though factoring in shipping and handling from the U.S., it’s still a pretty good deal.

    Bridgestone Philippines holds Ecopia Ecorun

    0

    Bridgestone-Ecopia

Ecorun veterans Ron and Ronald de los Reyes of Team Auto Review bested nine other media teams by posting an amazing 30.29 kilometers per liter, driving a 1.3-liter all-new Toyota Vios fitted with the new Ecopia EP200 tires. Off the bat, the participants were briefed that the Ecopia Ecorun would not be one of your run-of-the-mill ecoruns, because in between the start and finish lines were Amazing Race-style challenges at different waypoints that each team had to accomplish.

    Bridgestone-Ecopia3

Coming in second was the team composed of Wee Gamboa (Motoring Today), Matt Mallari (Motoring Today), and Marlon Dacumos (TopGear) who were able to do 20.18 kilometers per liter. Third place went to Team MP Turbo, composed of Mike Potenciano, Lindy Pellicer, and Henri Buenconsejo who registered 19.41 kilometers per liter. After missing our exit and getting lost along the way, my teammates Eggay Quesada (Autocar Magazine), Fort Manahan (Manila Times), and I did a measley 13.64 kilometers per liter, which is actually not bad considering the gross tonnage of our car plus the fact that we weren’t really travelling on econo-mode.

In attendance during the awarding ceremony were Bridgestone local distributor Philippine Allied Enterprises Corporation (PAEC) President and CEO Mark Tagle, AVP-Sales Benjamin Young, marketing manager Karl Bobis, and Bridgestone Tire Center Chino Roces manager Steven Tagle.

    Bridgestone-Ecopia2

The Ecopia is Bridgestone’s most eco-friendly tire to date, and it combines both efficiency and safety, that allows it to travel longer distances with the same amount of energy than conventional tires.

Designed for the small to mid-size car, the EP200 features a horizontal ground contact shape that decreases irregular wear and enhances driving stability.  Its Nano Pro Tech technology lowers the tire’s rolling resistance, which leads to significant fuel savings, as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions. Because of minimized energy loss during tire rotation, the manufacturer claims that the EP200 can travel an extra 3.15 kilometers compared to the conventional tire of a competing brand.

The EP200, along with the two other variants, the EP150 and the EP850, are now locally available.

    Revisiting the Honda CR-V

    Honda-CRV1

It goes without saying that roadtrips are more fun when you have an excellent ride, coupled with great company. For this particular trip, we had the top-tier 2.4 SX CR-V packed with family members, all excited to hit the waves of the Batangas beach.

A common trait of Honda vehicles is that they are fun to drive. Since we used to do events for the brand, I have many fond memories of roadtrips and events with their vehicles. For the launch of the second-generation CR-V more than a decade ago, we flew to Davao and made our way back via land (and a couple of RO-ROs) to the HCPI plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna for the grand welcome. That trip lasted over a week, and if you spend that much time in a vehicle, you get mighty acquainted with your ride.

    Honda-CRV5

Another thing I appreciate with Honda vehicles is the familiarity. Across all their vehicles, once in the driver’s seat, it takes very little time to get acquainted with the cockpit. The controls are intuitively placed, removing the need to consult the manual to find the missing buttons or levers.

The current generation CR-V is a joy to drive. It has gone a long way since the first-gen model that was introduced in our country in 1997, in terms of styling, technology, safety, and luxury, and it’s still on top of its game.

    Honda-CRV7

The interiors of this top tier variant will delight both the driver and the passenger. The premium materials used for the dash and controls, as well as the leather seats and steering wheel translates into an overall luxurious feel. The tilt and telescopic adjustment feature of the steering wheel as well as the seat height adjuster ensured the best driving position for whomever was driving.

Honda calls their version of the multimedia head unit their i-MID System, which stands for Inteligent Multi-Information Display. While it lacks the “wow factor” of bigger LCD screens found in other vehicles, its 5-inch LCD screen gets the job done by providing a wealth of information at the driver’s fingertips.Fuel consumption, audio controls, vehicle, and lighting settings can all be conveniently accessed via buttons located on the steering wheel.

    Honda-CRV6

Under the hood, the 2.4 SX variant is powered by an inline 4-cylinder SOHC i-VTEC engine that is mated with a 5-speed automatic transmission and is rated to produce a maximum power of 182.47 HP and maximum torque of 219.74 Nm. Acceleration is not a problem with the CRV, even when on Econ mode when the system automatically adjusts the engine, drive-by-wire, transmission, and air-con performance to maximize fuel efficiency.

Whether you are driving yourself or letting someone else do the job, the CR-V lives up to its name of being a “Comfortable Runabout Vehicle.” The combination of the MacPherson struts and the double-wishbone suspension provides enough give for a great ride, without the floating feeling. Even at high speeds, the CR-V hugs the road and feels solid, adding to your sense of stability.

    Honda-CRV4

I was happy to note that this variant came with all a laundry list of safety features, like dual front airbags, side airbags, ABS and EBD, Vehicle Stability Assist and Hill Start Assist, a reverse camera that displays on the i-MID screen, and three-point seatbelts plus headrests for all five passengers.

For this particular trip, we were able to squeeze five adults, one five-year-old, and whole lot of cargo inside the mid-sized crossover. A quick peek at the stuff we brought would make one think we were going camping for a week instead of spending the night at a resort. Our family does not pack light, and we appreciated the generous cargo space. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that the unit we had was sans the detachable third row that HCPI is currently including as a free option for all models.

    Honda-CRV3

Other notable accouterments that come with this variant are the smart keys and push-to-start button, numerous sockets and a USB port to connect and charge mobile devices with, and cruise control.

I’m happy to say that I can add another epic trip to my list of memories with the CR-V. Honda really upped its game with this one, making this already fun vehicle even fun-ner.

Currently, all locally available CR1-Vs are CBUs from Thailand, and are priced as follows: PHP 1,275.00 for the 2.0 V 2WD MT; PHP 1,325,000.00 for the 2.0 V 2WD AT; PHP 1,390,000 for the 2.0 S 2WD AT (PHP 1,410,000 for White Orchid color); and PHP 1,525,000.00 for the top-of-the-line 2.4 SX 4WD AT (PHP 1,545,000 White Orchid color).

New Vios sales record in PH

    0

    Toyota-Vios

Meanwhile, the CAMPI (Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc.) sales report showed that the Toyota Vios set a new sales record in August 2013. Since its introduction a decade ago, the Toyota Vios attained its highest sales volume registering 2,125 units in a single month.

In a statement, TMP President Michinobu Sugata said, “Having to reach this number of units sold in one month can be attributed to the trust that the customers have shown towards the Full Model Change Vios. On top of its already known quality features, this new model embodies excitement in every angle making it a car that is fun-to-drive for everyone.”

Aside from the Vios, other Toyota models also performed well in August. The Toyota Innova sold a total of 1,129 units making it the highest selling commercial vehicle model. The Camry, Corolla Altis, Hi-Ace, and the Hilux also continued to be the best-selling vehicles in their respective segments.

All in all, Toyota posted a total of 6,007 units sold grabbing 43.8% share of August automotive sales.
