    November Cover.indd

Your techie pals deserve only the finest toys—you know it, I know it, and so does everyone else. Gift hunting for them can get pretty nasty if you don’t make informed choices. For all you know, you could be giving them relatively outdated technology or gadgets they don’t even need.

A little Googling pre-hunt might save you, but we at Gadgets Magazine—normally being on the receiving end of holiday transactions involving gizmos and gadgetry—have made things a bit easier for you. We’ve lumped together the latest and most fitting gifts for techies of all types—whether your chum is a a digital artist, a sports buff, a game geek, or whatever else—in our early Yuletide treat.

The 2013 Wishlist offers more than just gift ideas. It contains handy tidbits that you might want to consider before making any gadget purchases for certain types of people or yourself (why helloooo, 13th month pay!). The star of the show is the tablet: an increasingly common gift option, especially now with the growing variety of options.

We also bring you stories about how Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes uses Fibr when he’s off the court and online, how we can use shopping apps to constantly be on the hunt for gifts, how four OPM rock icons performed for the first time on one stage as a super-band, how extended warranty programs provide an extra safety net for your gadgets, and how Tickle Me Elmo took toy stores by storm in the late 90s. Plus, the lovely Jackie Rice reveals her own Christmas wishes.

Don’t miss out on our pre-holiday treat. Grab a copy of The 2013 Wishlist at leading bookstores and get that perfect present for the tech-head in your life!

Armscor Execs pay courtesy call to Honduras president

    DSC019591

Armscor, a wholly Philippine company, is the largest single producer of the 1911 platform in the world. Yes. The whole world. That’s a lot  of what is arguably the world’s most popular handgun. Armscor also produces ammunition on a rather large scale, and one of their very happy clients is the Honduras.

In a recent trip to the country, chairman emeritus Bolo Tuason, President Martin Tuason accompanied by his wife Tammy, Armscor representative Loui Luque, Armscor International Marketing Director Henri Nahoum and Armscor Regional Representative to Honduras Jorge Cohen paid a visit to the president of the Honduras, Porfirio Lobo Sosa and presented him with a souvenir M1911-A2 FS 2-tone caliber 40 S&W Medallion pistol.

The President, in return, pledged continuous business to Armscor, saying that apart from its already large USD 1 Milllion annual orders from the company, it would also consider adding Armscor-produced 5.56 and 7.62 ammunition to the country’s defense budget. The Honduras is Armscor’s largest client in Central America. The exports bring in a substantial amount to the Philippine economy, and help put us on the map as far as firearms and ammunition are concerned.

All-out musician and mom, Barbie Almalbis rocks out

    barbie almalbis

If you’re a loyal fan of Barbie Almalbis, you’ve probably been with her through Hungry Young Poets to Barbie’s Cradle. And who would forget her bands top hits, “Torpe” and the theme song of the Pinoy Dawsons Creek, “Tabing Ilog”.

Barbie, who is now balancing her roles as a singer-songwriter, an all-out musician, wife, and a mother of two, is trying to do as much as she could without having to spread herself too thinly among her various roles.

“I didn’t really stop [making music]. I just keep my family a priority. I guess you just have to learn, as you go along, how to balance these things,” Barbie says in a recent TV interview.

With a family to tend to, Barbie has learned to rely on technology to keep her passion for music alive and, in a way, make sure that she doesn’t lose touch with her music.

Barbie says that with the advent of home recording and with the help of the Internet, she was able to continue writing songs and producing music at the comfort of her own home, without having to go to a full-production studio.

With social networking and video-sharing sites available, Barbie is just one click and one type away from her stable of fans. In fact, the 36-year-old responds actively to questions of fans in her Facebook page, and constantly updates them of her activities via Twitter and Instagram.

“Connecting with the fans is very important. With the help of fast broadband Internet, you can really get to know what your fans are thinking,” she adds.

Loyal supporters of Barbie can catch her at the November 9 leg of Smart’s first interactive concert, Smart Bro Live and Loud, which will be held in SM City Cebu along with Cebuano rock act Urbandub. Barbie will join fellow “Power of Four” artist Rico Blanco during the concert series’ Davao leg on November 23.

1st quarter grand winner of ‘Drive to 20’ takes home a Kia Soul

    kia-IMG_4466

Giving back to KIA loyalists, Columbian Autocar Corporation (CAC)—exclusive distributor of Kia Motors in the Philippines—held a turnover ceremony on October 17 for the ‘Drive to 20’ first quarter grand winner of a brand new KIA Soul.

As a celebration of CAC’s 20 years in the automotive industry, the company came up with a yearlong promotional strategy dubbed as the ‘Drive to 20’ raffle draw. From May to July, test-drive participants from several dealers nationwide had a chance to be one of the 20 monthly winners of a Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos. While Kia buyers were entitled with an entry to the Grand Raffle of a unique and classy KIA Soul.

CAC executives Ginia R. Domingo, President and Dodie D. Gañac, Vice President for Marketing together with Augusto Camacho, President of Premier Autoteck, presented the KIA Soul to the lucky Kia buyer.

After the turnover ceremony especially staged for her, Ma. Lourdes S. Imperial, a doctor and homemaker from Quezon City, is now a delighted owner of a Black Cherry KIA Soul.

    A KIA Loyalist

As it turns out, the brand new KIA Soul is Ms. Imperial and her family’s third KIA vehicle.

Starting with a KIA Picanto, Ms. Imperial recalled what brought about the first Kia purchase. “First of all, I was looking for a small car and among all the small cars before, the Kia Picanto was the best looking option.” She adds, “For the price, everything is beautiful- the interiors, specs and then sporty-looking, not corny at all.”

Soon after, Imperial’s family decided to get a new one which was their entry for the ‘Drive to 20’ raffle draw. As Ms. Imperial enumerated, her requirements were “spacious, 7-seater at least and fuel efficient.” Their search brought them to the All-New KIA Carens, launched only in May of this year. “Diesel, 7-seater, fuel-efficient and a Kia as well. I’m happy with my Picanto and so I said, Carens it is.”

    Bringing KIA closer to people

The Kia Drive to 20 is a proof of CAC and Kia’s commitment to its market. Speaking on behalf of CAC, Mr. Gañac relates that this kind of activity “continuously brings Kia closer to a growing following of upwardly-mobile, discerning market.” He added, “We wanted to bring something experiential and memorable that both our loyal and potential Kia supporters can appreciate. The Kia Drive to 20 proved to be a welcome treat and seeing the level of support and enthusiasm we are getting from the dealers and more importantly, from customers who agree that Kia is the best value automotive brand today.”

Imperial happily shared, “I tell my friends, if they’re buying a car, why not consider Kia? It’s a good choice. No matter if they’re looking for an SUV, a small car or a spacious one, consider Kia because for us, we are happy with Kia.”

As the Kia ‘Drive to 20’ first quarter raffle came to a close, the second quarter touted as the KIA ‘Drive to 20 Goes to Australia’ kicked off last August and will soon draw the Grand Winner of a trip for two to Australia. Test-drive participants are also entitled to win one of 20 Samsung Galaxy Tabs.

Furthermore, the KIA On Tour program highlighting Kia’s model line-up will culminate soon at the Auto Focus Motorshow and Expo on November 7, 2013, and finally in SM Lipa on November 14.

Asus launches the Transformer Book T100

    Asus

The choice between tablet and laptop really is the Devil’s bargain. On one hand, you can stick with a laptop. With it, you have creative power, computing muscle and roomy comfort, as well as the heft and dead keyboard space when you’re not busy making things. On the other hand, you could go with a slate, have a wonderful media experience, only to throw it across the room when you have to write anything longer than a status update.

Asus knows the kind of balancing act you have to do when considering which device to bring, and they have offered a solution. Just yesterday, they launched the Asus Transformer Book T100. The device is, loosely, a hybrid, able to change from laptop to tablet with a simple click. Just snap the screen onto the included keyboard dock, and hey, presto! It’s a laptop. When we say laptop, we do mean it. The T100 runs the full version of Windows 8.1, allowing you to do basically everything you could do on your work or home device, without the hassle of carrying around a massive rig. It even comes bundled with the full Microsoft office suite, so you can stay productive anywhere you can park yourself.

The T100 runs the Atom Z3740 “Bay Trail” processor that delivers stellar performance and even more impressive battery life. Both Intel reps and Asus folks promised that this device can deliver 11 hours of use. To clarify, that’s 11 hours of constant browsing over Wi-Fi, so it’s real, usable power they mean.

It comes in at a very svelte 10.5mm in tablet mode, with a very roomy 10.1-inch display, all the usual wireless standards such as Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, as well as expandability via a microSD slot.

Under the hood, the T100 packs a 1.33GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and wither 32 or 64GB of storage. The tablet alone tips the scales at 550g while the dock comes in at 520g for a grand total of just about 1kg combined. The device is available now, for just PHP23,995, which, all things considered, is a steal.

BenQ intros Flicker-free monitors in PH

Gallery_LCDM_GW2760HS_01imageA regular monitor backlight can cause flickering at 200Hz per second when brightness is reduced from the maximum level. This strains the ciliary muscle of the eye as it tries to adjust to the nearly invisible flickering, thus causing eye fatigue, headaches, and other health concerns when working long hours in front of the computer.

To address this concern, BenQ introduces a new technology for its computer monitors.

BenQ’s Flicker-free monitors employ a unique De-flickering Backlight Circuit Controller that eliminates flickering and, in effect, reduces the possibility of eyestrain.

    Gallery_LCDM_GW2760HS_13image

Other features found in the new monitors that are favorable to eye health are: Senseye Reading Mode, which attempts to recreate the experience of reading books by adjusting color temperature and brightness levels of the monitor and balancing its contrast and sharpness; the Automatic Eye-Protect Sensor, which detects ambient light levels and adjusts the monitor brightness accordingly; and the Smart Reminder feature, which prompts users to take a break for a predetermined time interval to allow the user’s eyes to rest.

On top of these features, the display itself is built with anti-glare technology. Select models come with a height adjustment stand.

The first BenQ Flicker-free monitor, the 27-inch GW2760HS, is now globally available.

Fujifilm X-E2 combines best features of three X-Series cameras

img_main01Armed with the focusing speed of the X100S, the wireless connectivity of the X-M1, and the design and shell size of the X-E1, Fujifilm’s newest addition to the X-Series is  clear proof of the line-up’s progressive evolution.

The X-E2, marketed as the successor of the X-E1, comes with the same X-mount that is used across the entire X-Series line, an EXR II image processor, and a 16.3MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor. Fujifilm’s X-Trans sensor does not make use of an optical low-pass filter (OLPF)—a common solution for eliminating moiré (the strange waves or maze-like patterns that appear in pictures of stripes and other patterns) that, on the downside, causes loss in sharpness—since it is equipped with a special color filter arrangement that makes it capable of minimizing the occurrence of moiré on its own.

    img_main02

Incorporated into the X-E2 is a new feature called the Lens Modulation Optimizer (LMO), which is meant to enhance edge-to-edge sharpness when shooting with a stopped down aperture by automatically correcting diffraction blur.

Its electronic viewfinder (EVF) uses OLED technology and displays images in 2.36 million dots, while the 3-inch LCD displays in 1.04 million dots and has an 80-degree viewing angle.

It expands the exposure compensation of the X-E1, bumping it up by one value to ±3 EV, as well as the AF speed which has been upgraded from 0.1 sec. to 0.08 sec, inheriting the speed of the X100S. The frame rate of continuous shooting has also been increased from 6 or 3 fps to 7 or 3 fps.

Sensitivity ranges from 200 to 6400, but can be extended to 100, 12800 or 25600.

Just like the X-M1, the X-E2 enables users to wirelessly transfer photos from the camera to a mobile device if the user has the FUJIFILM Camera Application app (free for both iOS andAndroid). The device’s wireless functions are activated by pressing the Wi-Fi button on its top plate.

Other features include an in-camera RAW converter, a built-in pop-up flash, AE/ISO/Dynamic Range/Film Simulation bracketing, Full HD video recording, and Fujifilm’s trademark Film Simulation modes. Two color variants are available: silver/black and pure black.

    03

The X-E2 will be available mid-November and will sell for a suggested retail price of PHP 69,990 in a kit that includes an 18-55mm Fujinon X-mount lens.

Eminem performing “Rap God” at the YTMA

Though it suffered quite a beating from social media users (and from those who were there to see it live in New York) with some not-so-encouraging reviews, the first-ever YouTube Music Awards wraps up, handing over the night’s top honor, the award for Artist of the Year, to Eminem.

“Artist of the Year honors the biggest acts of the last year on YouTube based on total number of views, likes, shares, comments, and subscribers,” read YTMA host Jason Schwartzman before announcing the winner.

Screen Shot 2013-11-04 at 10.10.58 PM

Onstage, Eminem performed “Rap God,” a cut from his recently released eighth studio album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2.

Arcade Fire also performed live, opening the night with a live music video of “Afterlife” arranged by the event’s director, Spike Jonze. Lady Gaga, whose music video for “Applause” was nominated for Video of the Year, delivered an emotional piano-accompanied performance of her new single “Dope.”

Korean pop girl group Girls Generation came out on top in the Video of the Year category, beating Miley Cyrus, One Direction, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj, and even PSY, with their music video for “I Got a Boy.”

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis also lost in the Video of the Year category, but the hip-hop duo did bag the award for Breakthrough of the Year.

Taylor Swift’s pop-dubstep hit “I Knew You Were Trouble” won the YouTube Phenomenon award, while the trophy for Innovation of the Year went to DeStorm’s “See Me Standing.”

Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix’s cover of “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, meanwhile, bested other covers such as Boyce Avenue’s “Mirrors” and “Titanium/Pavane” by ThePianoGuys in the Response of the Year category.
