Google is removing ad blockers from the Play Store

Many people find ads annoying—that’s why we install ad block extensions on our Internet browsers. Every Internet browser has an extension that can block apps. AdBlock Plus is one of the most popular ones, and there are even filter lists that you can subscribe to so you don’t see ads, period—from the ones that load when you’re trying to watch your favorite music video to the banners on your favorite websites. Mobile devices also have the ability to block ads from apps and websites, but Google is removing these ad blocking apps from the Play Store because it violates their developer agreement.

” You agree that you will not engage in any activity with the Market, including the development or distribution of Products, that interferes with, disrupts, damages, or accesses in an unauthorized manner the devices, servers, networks, or other properties or services of any third party including, but not limited to, Android users, Google or any mobile network operator. You may not use customer information obtained from the Market to sell or distribute Products outside of the Market,” the agreement says.

There are still ways to put ad blockers on your phone, however—you can download ad blockers from outside sources and sideload them onto your Android devices. Of course, if you’re using apps that don’t require the Internet, you can always go into Airplane Mode.

Hong Kong moves quickly on gigabit broadband

    0

The quest for higher Internet speeds is a never ending one. We all want more speed so we can watch YouTube videos without the buffering, talk to our friends and family on Skype without the dropped calls, hold office in a virtual workspace in real time, and to play games with people around the world without needing to blame our poor performance on lag and disconnections. The Hong Kong-based Hong Kong Broadband Network has moved quickly to roll out gigabit (1,000 Mbps) broadband speeds to its customers for a bargain basement price—USD$26 (Php 1,055) a month.

By comparison, Google has taken steps to launch Google Fiber in the United States, but it is only available in the Kansas City area right now for USD$70 (Php 2,842) a month. Verizon, one of the biggest ISPs in the United States, offers up to 50 megabits download and 20 megabits upload for a rather expensive USD$144.99 (Php 5,886) a month. Currently, high-speed Internet is only available in the Philippines to those who are willing to shell out large amounts of money or enterprise customers who need the bandwidth, and as a result, we have the 115th fastest Internet in the world by average download speed (3.92 Mbps). Compared to developed nations, the United States is 34th (16.01 Mbps), the United Kingdom is 24th (19.39 Mbps), Japan is 7th (33.63 Mbps), and Hong Kong is leading the way in first place (45.41 Mbps).

Despite its low prices, the Hong Kong Broadband Network is turning a profit after taking on a few years of being in the red. “This is an eminently replicable model,” said Benoit Felten, a co-founder of Diffraction Analysis, a Paris-based consulting business. “But not by someone who already owns a network—unless they’re willing to scrap the network.”

“Most broadband markets in the United States today are dominated by one phone company and one cable company,” said Dane Jasper, the chief executive of Sonic.net, an Internet provider based in Santa Rosa, California. “Why doesn’t Verizon offer gigabit service? Because it doesn’t have to.” Verizon justified their top offering, only 150 megabits at USD$195 (Php 7,916) a month by saying, “We offer speeds that exceed what customers can and do use.”

Some United States ISPs are beginning to offer gigabit broadband, but for prices that far exceed the Hong Kong Broadband Network’s pricing. One provider has started offering gigabit service at USD$349.99 (Php 14,208) a month. However, Google has announced plans to partner with Sonic.net and start rolling out its gigabit service to 850 faculty and staff homes in a Stanford University subdivision. “We want to see what developers and users can do with ultra-high speeds, whether it’s creating new bandwidth-intensive ‘killer apps’ and services, or other uses we can’t yet imagine,” Google said on its company blog.

With investors starting to increasingly set up shop in the Philippines, and with the many call centers in the country, will the Philippines start taking affordable gigabit broadband seriously? Only time can tell.

Xi3 is taking preorders for the Piston, a $1,000 PC-in-a-console

Valve CEO Gabe Newell and the Steam Box look like they are about to be beaten to the punch for living room supremacy by hardware maker Xi3. Xi3 is now taking preorders for the Piston, a $1,000 PC-in-a-console, and it is scheduled to hit shelves by the holiday season of 2013. The Piston was one of the many gadgets unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. Newell and Valve, despite their reputation in the gaming industry for being noncommittal with their release dates, said that the Steam Box should be ready for testing in three to four months.

The Linux-based Piston isn’t going to replace a gaming rig with all the latest and greatest parts, though. The x86-based system will have an integrated AMD chip with a 3.2 GHz quad-core processing unit, and a 7000-series Radeon GPU sporting 384 programmable cores. The Piston will come with support for up to three monitors, including one HDMI output, along with whopping 12 I/O ports, eight of which are USB slots. For those preordering the console, you can select the size of the solid-state drive, but upgrading from the base 128 GB to a 512 GB will stack on USD$750 to the price. Users will also be able to install other operating systems on the Piston. “Piston will ship standard with Windows, though users are able to install other operating systems on the device, like any PC,” said David Politis, Xi3’s Chief Marketing Officer. That means those who prefer Linux can swap Windows for Linux, although only 81 Linux games are available for the Steam for Linux client, as opposed to the hundreds (if not thousands) of games for Windows.

You won’t get the best performance from the Piston, not only because of its middling specs, but also because it will draw only 40 watts from an outlet. The USD$1,000 won’t be too appealing to console gamers either, namely because Sony’s PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox will have lower price points. One of the advantages to owning the Piston, however, is that you can apply upgrades easily, such as swapping RAM, the motherboard, and even the AMD accelerated processing unit (APU) itself. This will enable the Piston to stay one step ahead of its console counterparts as games become more and more complex.

The Piston will make use of Steam’s Big Picture mode to bring PC gaming to TV screens. Those who preorder now can get USD$100 off.

We go out in the open with Hillarie Parungao in GADGETS Magazine’s Outdoor Issue!

    0

Hillarie walked in on the set, all smiles and dead-set to work it. By the time we got outside, Hillarie immediately started hopping, dancing and playing around—you could tell how much she loved being outdoors and in the company of others.

Hillarie is exactly what you would see in the outtakes—bold, confident, fun-loving. She finds joy in discovering things that are fun and novel, which is why she adores her job. To her, modeling is an adventure, and she sees herself as an adventurer. “Absolutely! I’d say yes to practically anything,” she exclaimed. “Even if I’m not sure if I can actually do it, I tell myself that I can. I like taking risks,” she said with excitement in her eyes.

In the course of her professional modeling career so far, she was already able to meet loads of people and venture into unfamiliar turf—outdoor activities included. “Thanks to my modeling career, I learned how to scuba dive, hike and raft,” she eagerly told us. “All those extreme sports that I never imagined I would do, I was able to experience because of the modeling stints I got.”

Despite being a model by profession and having tried a lot of outdoor activities, Hillarie sheepishly admits that she hardly works out (“Well, dancing is exercise, isn’t it?” she giggled). “A lot of people would think that I watch what I eat and constantly head to the gym since I’m into modeling, although that’s not the actual case,” she said guiltily. “But this year, I plan to change that and be more health-conscious.” Hillarie recognizes the importance of being fit and is determined to be more sensitive to her body’s condition this time around. “In the modeling world, you have to take care of your body. Lucky for me, even if I eat a lot and rarely exercise, I don’t bloat. But being fit isn’t just about the physical aspect. It’s firstly a health issue. You wouldn’t want to die early because you didn’t take care of your body, would you?”

Read the full article and see Hillarie’s photos in Gadgets Magazine’s March 2013 release—the Outdoor Issue.

Yet another Samsung Galaxy S4 image surfaces

    0

Samsung’s Galaxy S4 has been the subject of many false leaks over the past weeks, given that the launch is set to happen at the end of this week, and now, yet another image seems to be floating up from the dregs of whatever rumor mill these things are created. The images floating around seem to have originated in China, and show a device that has 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean, and a 13-Megapixel camera. All of these specs fit neatly into the previous S4 rumors. It does, however, looks suspiciously rounded at the edges, and has dual-SIM capabilities, so we’re a little on the fence as to the legitimacy of the device. There are just so many knock-offs from all over the world, that the chances of this being the actual device (or a cleverly-disguised mockup) and just another backyard-built budget ‘Droid are almost the same. If the whole mess of having all these phones appear at every other Samsung speculation website out there is bothering you, don’t worry. There’s just a few days left before the big reveal. It’ll all be over soon. Until the S5 rumors start rolling in.

Part two of the Samsung Galaxy S4 teaser series

    0

If you have been following the tech scene closely, you of course know that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is due to come out in a few days. There has been a lot of speculation as to what the device really looks like, and Samsung has so far been keeping a very tight lid on the new flagship. They have, however, started a teaser series to whet our appetites, and Part Two has just come out. (Here’s the first one, if you missed it.) It’s a pretty cute effort, and while we do appreciate the work that has gone into it, I’m sure we are’t the only ones who want to sneak up behind the kid in the video, throw a pillowcase over his head and look into the box ourselves. Alas, we, along with the rest of the world, will have to wait for the actual reveal on the 14th of this month. For now, follow Jeremy’s adventure as he keeps a close watch on the S4 HERE.

NVIDIA announces PhysX and APEX support for PlayStation 4

NVIDIA announced that it would support the upcoming PlayStation 4 (PS4) with NVIDIA PhysX and APEX software development kits (SDKs). Game designers use PhysX and APEX technologies to produce games, using them for collision detection and simulation of rigid bodies, clothing, fluids, particle systems and more across many devices that support gaming, such as gaming PCs, game consoles, and handheld and mobile devices.

NVIDIA’s APEX technology improves on its PhysX technology and allows artists to create intricate physics-enabled environments, allowing them to expand the quantity and visual quality of destructible objects, and make particle-based fluids and smoke integral to game play, as well as create life-like clothing that interacts with a character’s body to achieve more realism in their games.

“Great physics technology is essential for delivering a better gaming experience and multiplatform support is critical for developers,” said Mike Skolones, product manager for PhysX at NVIDIA. “With PhysX and APEX support for PlayStation 4, customers can look forward to better games.” NVIDIA PhysX and APEX technologies can run on many CPU architectures, and can be accelerated by any CUDA architecture-enabled NVIDIA cards that are of the GeForce 8 series or higher.

For more information about the APEX and PhysX SDKs, you can visit http://developer.nvidia.com/apex or http://developer.nvidia.com/technologies/physx.

[Sneak Peek] The Fujifilm X100S and the X20!

Fujifilm’s new addition to the X-Series—the X100S and the X20—which were initially unveiled in Las Vegas during CES 2013 in January, are about to hit our shores, and here we give you a preview of these awesome devices.

    The X100S

The X100S is actually an update to the X100, but compared to the latter, the former has a hybrid autofocus (AF) system, which is able to lock in a subject at only 0.08 of a second at the quickest. We were able to try it out and we were quite impressed at how incredibly fast it took a picture when we hit the shutter button.

Another update to the X100 is an improved sensor and processor. Packed into the X100S is a 16.3-megapixel APS-C-sized X-Trans CMOS II sensor and the EXR Processor II. According to Fujifilm, the upgrade is meant to improve photo quality, reduce image noise, hasten boot time, and minimize shutter lag. The new sensor reduces shooting interval to only 0.5 of a second and is capable of a burst shooting speed of up to 6.0 frames per second (fps). The X100S increases the sensitivity range of the X100 to up to ISO 25600. It also takes a leap from the video recording capabilities of the X100 by boosting the maximum resolution to Full HD.

The X100S features a 2.8-inch LCD screen with a 460K-dot resolution, as well as a hybrid viewfinder that allows the photographer to switch from optical (OVF) to electronic (EVF) mode, like its predecessor. Fixed on the body of the X100S is a Fujinon lens that has the same fixed-focal length as that of the X100: a 23mm (equivalent to 35mm on a 35mm format) lens with a maximum aperture of F2.

What’s interesting about the X100S is its manual focusing system called the Digital Split Image system, which allows users to select their area of focus simply by twisting the focus ring on the lens. This splits the camera’s live view display into four black-and-white stripes. Line-up the stripes using the focus ring, and when they are already properly aligned, it means that the image is in focus.

If you owned (or still own) an analog SLR, this would hardly be new to you, as it is reminiscent of the focusing mechanism of old film SLR cameras.

    The X20

We were also able to get our hands on the X20, which turned out to be quite smaller than the X100S and feels incredibly handier. The device is an update to the X10.

The X20 has a 12-megapixel, 2/3-inch-type CMOS sensor, working together with the same image processor in the X100S. It features an “Advanced Optical Viewfinder” that lets users see the shooting mode, the focusing area, shutter speed and aperture values, displayed in bright green LED characters. When the scene is bright, the green rectangle shows up on the grid, but shifts to black when the scene is too dark.

On the body of the X20 is a fixed 4x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 28mm-112mm and a maximum aperture of F2.0 on the wide-angle end and F2.8 on the telephoto end.

Both the X100S and the X20 still carry Fujifilm’s trademark Film Simulation filters, which emulate the colors and effects produced by some of the company’s brands of film, namely Velvia, Astia and Provia.

Fujifilm Philippines says that they will be making the product available to the market later this month. No word yet on pricing, but we’ll keep you posted!

Filipina beauty queens use Samsung GALAXY Note II

Ever since its launch, the Samsung GALAXY Note II has garnered interest from curious onlookers. Now it will garner even more onlookers now people know that two Filipina beauty queens are also GALAXY Note II users—Shamcey Supsup and Venus Raj.

Shamcey Supsup, Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up and tapped designer for the new NAIA terminals, uses the GALAXY Note II. Her favorite feature is the Multi-Window, which allows two windows to be opened simultaneously on one screen. This helps Shamcey open the Internet browser to look for inspiration while sketching her design ideas in the S Note app. Now, multitasking is possible for her even while on-the-go.

Sketching and other creative works can be done with ease with the GALAXY Note II’s S Pen. The S Pen is now longer, thicker and ergonomically designed for perfect grip. It’s perfect while using the Easy Clip feature, which allows Shamcey to easily outline and crop any content from the screen in any form, size, and shape for instant sharing and editing. The S Pen also allows Shamcey to use Air View to preview the contents of an email or an image folder or even the scenes of a video just by hovering the S Pen over the timeline. The S Pen simply makes the GALAXY Note II a more productive tool for creatives just like Shamcey.

Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010 fourth runner-up, enjoys the GALAXY Note II’s 8 megapixel rear-facing and 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera with HD video recording. She loves the GALAXY Note II’s unique feature called Best Face, which allows her to choose the most preferred face of each person from a group portrait photo. With one click, the GALAXY Note II will take consecutive shots and allow Venus to select the best face of each person in the photo. Venus also enjoys watching her favorite movies while traveling, and she can view all these in the GALAXY Note II’s 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED screen. It also comes in a 16:9 screen ratio that gives Venus a cinema-like viewing experience right at the palm of her hands.

Both beauty queens are very active in updating their Facebook and Twitter pages, which is why the GALAXY Note II’s Quick Command feature is perfect for them. It lets users quickly activate frequently used apps with the S Pen, and the command pad appears when a user just swipes upward on the screen with the S Pen button pressed. They can easily tweet or update their status by drawing pre-registered marks on the command pad for quick and easy access to their SNS.

The Samsung GALAXY Note II is only one of the premier products from Samsung Mobile Philippines, made to encourage its users to “unleash their inner creativity.” So rush to your nearest Samsung store to experience this creative tool for yourself.
