Tests confirm new iPad reaches 116 degrees when running games

Do you find the new iPad uncomfortably warm during your long gaming sessions? It’s not your imagination. Consumer Report testers have found that the new iPad reaches about 116 degrees Fahrenheit (about 46 degrees Celsius) when running action games, most notably Infinity Blade II. The temperature reading was done using a thermal camera and was taken after 45 minutes of uninterrupted gaming with Infinity Blade II, while propped up on an iPad Smart cover. When compared to the iPad 2, the new iPad was hotter by about 13 degrees Fahrenheit (which is about 10.5 degrees Celsius). Consumer Report also noted that the 4G connection was not turned on during the temperature reading, which we gather would have added quite a bit more heat to the whole shebang.

    Sony Philippines unveils NEX-7 camera

Sony Philippines recently launched the NEX-7 compact interchangeable lens camera among others as part of the company’s Summer is ON 2012 campaign. Following the NEX-3, NEX-5, NEX-5N, Sony achieves an upgrade in its NEX line with this new release that features better controls and than its predecessors along with some other very pleasant improvements.

In addition to the rear dial and the three soft keys from the previous models, the NEX-7 adds two new programmable dials on the top plate as well as a button beside the shutter for cycling through the camera’s functions. In manual mode, you get one dial dedicated to each of the main exposure parameters such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, which is an incredible upgrade in the functionality of the interface. Like the other cameras in the NEX line, the NEX-7 also has a tilt-able rear LCD.

The NEX-7 packs a 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which is the same one seen on the Sony SLT-A77, and allows for true 1080p60 video recording. Despite its compact body, it now also has an electronic viewfinder that was nowhere to be found on the earlier NEX cameras. Another improvement is the quicker shutter lag of just 20ms from the previous 100ms, while its Carl Zeiss branded E 24mm F1.8 lens is also nice, as it supposedly offers the same field of view as a 35mm lens on full frame.

At first impression, the NEX-7 seems to have the right upgrades to appeal to more serious photographers, and it’s already available in the Philippines this month at a standard retail price of Php 59,999.

    Review: SAMSUNG PL210

    By M.R. Gavin

Samsung has always churned out impressive cameras, whether in a phone, point-and shoots or even DSLRs. Photos come out clear and crisp; it’s as if there is a Photoshop application inside the camera.

The PL210 is no exception to the great camera lines that Samsung has launched for gadgeteers. If you want a compact camera that has DSLR features, this one is for you. Its 14.2-megapixel resolution and 27mm wide angle and 10-times optical zoom make it perfect for outdoor photos.

We all know how shaky our hands can be and this usually ruins the shot. The PL210 offers a Dual Image Stabilization feature that comes combined with Optical Image Stabilization, giving users sharper images no matter how you take your photo. I’ve tried using this in low light and even while on zoom, the anti-shake feature still works.

I always complained about my past digital cameras have really small screens as it makes it difficult to see if the photos were fine or blurred. The PL210 has a 3-inch display that has environmental illumination technology that adjusts LCD brightness for good viewing even under the sun. Its 720p HD video recording capability captures 30 frames per second and allows a really long record time. You could also use the zoom function even while recording a video.

Users could also put special effects on their photos using the Magic Frame feature, although there are not much templates to choose from. Customers, however, may still opt to use another feature that adds different effects to your images, such as those you can find in entry-level DSLRs like Vignette, Half-Tone Dotto, Vivid and Soft Focus.

Like most cameras, this Samsung has a Smart Face Recognition feature that can detect as many as 20 faces, making them clearer and more detailed. It also has a range of shooting modes. This can also be your ultimate on-the-go media tool because it can record conversation for up to 10 hours.

My only issue here is that shutter lag is a bit long. For an impatient user, this could be a downer.  Also, the default high-resolution file size mode can create a bit of a problem, especially when you need to send the files electronically. Users might need to shrink or resize the files for easy uploading,

Samsung probably has the most value-for-money camera products in the market today and the PL210 is no exception. It can be a point-and-shoot substitute for those bulky SLR cameras.

    Specifications:
    Megapixel Count: 14.5 Mega pixel
    Zoom and Optics: 1.0X ~ 5.0X(Optical x Digital : 50.0X), Play mode : 1.0X ~ 13.5X
    Physical Dimensions: 100.4 x 58.5 x 19.7mm
    Weight: 148g
    Memory Media: Micro SD

    What’s Hot:
     • SLR-like photo quality (14.5mp)
    • Pocket size
    • A range of shooting modes

    What’s Not:
     • Lagging after shots
    • Hard to press navigation buttons

    Bottomline:

The Samsung PL210 is your ultimate substitute to a DSLR camera

The Piratebay announces plans to hoist unmanned server drones

Torrent site The Piratebay is toying the idea of chucking their hardware into cheap, unmanned GPS drones and floating them several kilometers off of the air. According to the group, technology has moved far enough that there are now cheap, disposable computers available for their plan. “This way our machines will have to be shut down with aeroplanes in order to shut down the system. A real act of war,” said the infamous torrent site in a blog post.

The Piratebay promieses that the  planned LOSS (low orbit server stations) is just the first attempt at hosting torrents in places other than land. They say that with modern radio transmitters, the planned LOSS can get over 100Mbps per node up to 50km away, which is more than enough for their purposes.

Acer Aspire M3 ultrabook in the flesh

We’re currently at an NVIDIA conference here at Malaysia, and though there’s a lot being said here that we can’t talk about (we’re under NDA), we managed to stumble onto a gadget that we could talk about – the recently announced Acer Apire M3 ultrabook.

This 15-inch beauty is notable not only because it’s a thin and light notebook, but because it uses NVIDIA’s latest GPU offering, codenamed Kepler as the discrete graphics of choice. This particular device has the NVIDIA GeForce GT640M inside it, which the company claims gives you uncompromised gaming on the go.

CNET says that this little number can run EA’s latest multiplayer bonanza, Battlefield 3, on ultra comfortably – something that most other dedicated rigs dream to do. It’s also one of the few ultrabooks out there that has a built-in internal ODD. All of this is stuffed in a absolutely thin 20mm chassis.

No word on pricing, though a rep said that the product should be shipping out to selected markets soon.

    Review: Epson ME Office 620F

    By Benjamin Arnold

I have always been a little picky when it comes to the tools or products I use for my artistic purposes. I always have to have a specific type of pencil, a certain kind of pen or a precise brand of paper. Even when it comes to the type of printers or ink that I use, I can be quite critical because I am always looking for something that can deliver the best results. So when it comes to printing out colored images, Epson has usually been on the top of my list.

The Epson ME Office 620F multifunction printer comes in the standard corporate black color and is quite big and boxy. But that is the usual case when it comes to these kind of printers, as they need the space to fit in all the varied features. This specific model has the usual functions of printing, scanning, copying and faxing, all of which faired quite well during testing.

In terms of printing, the Epson ME Office 620F prints beautifully clear, crisp images. Right out of the tray, the prints don’t need extra time to dry as they used the Epson DURABrite Ultra ink that doesn’t smudge, fade or smear with water. I also like the fact that the inks are in individual cartridges, making it more cost efficient in the sense that you only replace the inks that are used up. It also has an additional function that, when the black ink is running low, the printer offers to use all the inks to create a composite black that extends the ink life. This, however, makes the black printouts less vibrant, but if you are after quantity over quality, this is an ideal function. We were able to print around 200 to 250 prints before one of the ink cartridges emptied on us.

One issue I have with Epson printers is when one cartridge becomes empty, the whole printer seizes to function. This holds true with the Epson ME Office 620F. At least the scanning function still works even if the ink cartridge is empty.

Another issue is that the printer sounds like it is always angry, sucking in the paper and making a loud scary mechanical sound that constantly makes me turn my head to see if there was a paper jam, but only to find out that the printer naturally makes that kind of sound when printing.

In terms of scanning and copying, the printer does a fairly clean job. The scans come out clear without taking on the texture of the paper, which is quite a problem when using other scanners to scan illustrations.

With the Epson ME Office 620F scanner, the scans come out clean and smooth with no paper texture visible. For the copying, it comes out the same, dirt free and clear.

What I like about the set up of the scanner is that the scanning bulb runs vertically to the paper rather than horizontally like other scanners. Because of the vertical setup, scans are processed faster while being super quiet. In fact, it was so quiet that I thought that it wasn’t scanning at all. This is a way better improvement compared with other scanners, not to mention the auto document feeder that can accommodate around 30 sheets, making copying quick and easy.

For faxing, the Epson ME Office 620F works to the level of other fax machines, with the redial and speed dial functions, making processing time shorter.

All in all, the Epson ME Office 620F multifunction printer is a reasonable addition to any office that desires quality prints with a high quantity output.

    Specifications:
Functions: Print, Copy, Scan & Fax
    Ink System: 4-colour
    Print Speed: Black – Approx. 34 ppm (draft); Color – Approx. 15 ppm (draft);
Scanner Type: Flat bed color image scanner with auto document feeder
    Optical Resolution: 1200 dpi
    Scan Area: 216 x 297 mm (8.5 x 11.7 inch)
Type of Fax: Walk-up black-and-white & color fax capability
    Fax Speed: Approx. 3sec/page
    Connectivity: Hi-speed USB 2.0
    Max Paper Size & Capacity: 8.5-inches x 44-inches; 120 sheets, A4 plain paper (64g/m2)
    Price: Php 6,495

    What’s Hot:
    • Clear smudge proof prints
    • Clean scans
    • Composite black option to maximize print outputs
    • Fast and silent scanning
    • Easy auto document feeder for quick copies

    What’s Not:
    • Loud when printing
    • Impossible to print when one ink cartridge is empty

    Bottomline:

The Epson ME Office 620F is a valuable addition to any office that desires both high quality and high quantity outputs, with the added features of being multifunctional.
