The nubia Music Pro is one of the newest phones to center audio performance as its key selling point, standing out in a market where most brands focus on cameras, displays, or processing power. It’s not the first phone to emphasize sound, but it brings a contemporary spin with a 2.1-channel audio solution, light breeze effects, and up to 600% volume amplification. This makes it particularly attractive to music enthusiasts and those who enjoy watching videos without external speakers. But beyond its sound-oriented design, how well does it perform as a daily smartphone?

Design: 3.5/5

The nubia Music Pro features a bold and playful design that stands out from most smartphones. Its look is inspired by classic vinyl record players, giving it a retro yet modern feel. The phone comes in two styles: the colorful Pop Art and the minimalist Melody Wave. I got the retro-modern Pop Art design, which is bright, colorful, and certainly eye-catching. It’s the kind of phone that turns heads in public—something that will appeal to those who appreciate the artistry of vinyl culture. Personally, I prefer a more minimalist aesthetic, so the bright, attention-grabbing Pop Art style isn’t for me.

Adding to its uniqueness is the LED ring surrounding the speaker, which illuminates and synchronizes with your music for a visual experience. The large 6.7-inch HD+ screen with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate is ideal for watching videos and movies.

Hardware: 4/5

The nubia Music Pro is powered by a Unisoc T7200 octa-core chipset, paired with 128GB of storage and up to 8GB of dynamic RAM. It also has a large 5000mAh battery, offering good endurance for a full day of typical use. However, charging is slow at just 10W. For everyday tasks like streaming, browsing, messaging, and light gaming, it performs well for its class.

The camera is not its strongest feature. Photos can appear slightly fuzzy and lack sharpness and detail. Although it boasts a 50MP rear camera, megapixels alone don’t guarantee quality. Sensor size, lens quality, and image processing all play a role. The 5MP front camera is fine for basic selfies and video calls. Since many users prioritize camera quality when choosing a phone, this may not be the best option if photography is a top concern.

The phone’s true strength lies in its sound. The nubia Music Pro is designed for users who want loud, clear, and deep audio directly from their device. If sound quality matters more to you than camera performance, this phone is worth considering.

User Experience: 4/5

The nubia Music Pro offers a well-balanced user experience with consistent performance for everyday tasks. It doesn’t aim to be a flagship, but it delivers reliably for its intended audience.

Its most distinctive feature is the large round speaker on the back, which provides loud and crisp audio for media playback. It’s designed for entertainment and performs best when playing music or videos directly from the phone. I tried using it for calls, but the sound still came from the earpiece or standard loudspeaker during speakerphone mode.

For multimedia use, the phone’s strengths are clear. Streaming movies and videos is enjoyable, supported by the large HD+ display and 120Hz refresh rate that keeps motion smooth. The audio—deep, loud, and balanced—enhances the viewing experience. That said, while the volume and clarity are impressive, the overall sound profile isn’t dramatically more refined than other strong contenders. It performs well, but doesn’t redefine mobile audio.

The nubia Music Pro handles basic tasks like social media, web browsing, and light multitasking without issue. App loading times are reasonable, and the system remains responsive under moderate use. Its processing capabilities are best suited for everyday and entertainment-focused tasks, not for heavy applications or high-end mobile gaming.

Overall, the nubia Music Pro delivers satisfying and reliable day-to-day performance, especially for users who prioritize music and entertainment. It may not appeal to those focused on photography or gaming, but for users seeking a balance of functionality, simplicity, and standout audio, it delivers on its promise.

Value: 4/5

At PHP6,299 SRP—and an even more attractive promo price of PHP4,299—the nubia Music Pro offers excellent value for users who care most about audio performance. While it doesn’t match the all-around capabilities of flagship devices, it delivers a strong music experience within its price range, making it a smart choice for audio enthusiasts.

Bottomline

The nubia Music Pro shines brightest for users who truly value great sound. If you’re looking for a camera-centric device, this may not be the right fit. But if you want loud, high-quality audio, enjoy retro-inspired design, or need a phone that doubles as a mini speaker, this could be your perfect match.

Toyota offers promos on its road trip-ready vehicles this September

Toyota Motor Philippines is making September the month for road trips with thrilling deals on the Hilux, RAV4, GR Yaris and more.

Pay Low, Pay Light, Cash Savings

Get the Hilux 4×2 2.4 G A/T for a downpayment of only PHP220,800 under the Pay Low Option. This option offers customers downpayments as low as 15 percent with free insurance for the first year, free LTO registration for three years and no chattel mortgage at 60 months to pay.

The same variant is also available at a monthly payment of PHP15,511 under the Pay Light Option, which offers customers low monthly plans with 50 percent downpayment at 60 months amortization.

The Conquest and 4×2 2.4 G A/T variants also get a PHP30,000 discount for those who will pay in straight cash.

Those who’ve been eyeing a premium SUV can get the RAV4 2.5 LTD HEV CVT at a downpayment of PHP307,800 under the Pay Low Option or a monthly payment of PHP21,312 under the Pay Light Option. The same variant also gets PHP200,000 off through straight cash payment.

For the thrill seekers, the road-ready GR Yaris can be theirs at a downpayment of PHP523,500 or a monthly payment of PHP35,500 for the 1.6 Turbo A/T variant. Customers who will pay through straight cash get a PHP160,000 discount.

Free Periodic Maintenance

Safety remains number one, so Toyota is offering FREE periodic maintenance service (PMS) up to the 20,000Kkm check-up for all brand-new Raize, Veloz, and select variants of the Vios, Fortuner, Hilux, Innova and Avanza given that they are purchased from an authorized Toyota dealership within the promo period.

Customers may avail of the free PMS within 36 months from the release date of their vehicle so long as they don’t skip any maintenance from the 1,000km to 20,000km check-up.

All variants of the Tamaraw sold and released during the promo period are also qualified for the Service Discount Voucher of PHP1,200 (VAT inclusive), applicable to nine PMS from the 1,000km to 40,000km check-up. Customers may avail of the PHP1,200 Service Discount Voucher within 48 months of the release date of the vehicle.

Owners of brand-new Rush, Corolla Altis and Wigo sold and released during the promo period also qualify for the PHP1,200 Service Discount Voucher. The voucher, which can be availed within 36 months from the release date of the vehicle, is applicable to seven PMS from the 1,000km to 30,000km check-up.

Trade-in Rebate, Insurance and Warranty

For customers who are ready to hit the road with a new vehicle, they can trade in their old Vios, Innova, Fortuner, or Hilux for a brand-new Corolla Cross HEV, Yaris Cross HEV, or Zenix HEV and get a rebate of PHP30,000.

Those looking for a reliable business partner can get a PHP20,000 rebate when they trade in any four-wheel vehicle from any brand for a Toyota Tamaraw.

The rebate can be used as cash discount for the purchase of the new vehicle during the promo period or to purchase Toyota Genuine Accessories.

During the promo period, select Vios, Wigo, Avanza, Veloz, Innova, Fortuner, and Hilux sold and released are entitled to a free one-year comprehensive insurance provided by Toyota Insure, given that the unit is purchased from any authorized Toyota Dealer nationwide.

Don’t get duped: Smart warns against fake links in scam texts

Smart warns customers against tapping and opening links embedded in text messages, even if these appear to come from the telco. The mobile services provider stressed that it only uses the full address of its official domain – https://smart.com.ph – in text blasts.

For SIM registration, Smart sends the official link https://smart.com.ph/SimReg only to unregistered numbers. Customers are reminded that registered SIMs don’t need to register again.

“Smart has stopped using shortened links for its official domain or SIM registration site,” said Atty. Roy Ibay, VP and head of regulatory affairs at Smart. “Only smart.com.ph is legitimate, and any other version is fraudulent and designed to trick customers into giving away personal information.”

Smart has intensified efforts against text scams. It has blacklisted more than 369,000 mobile numbers involved in phishing activities from January to July 2025. It has also prevented more than 1.7 billion scam texts from reaching customers in the same seven-month period.

“We urge everyone to be extra vigilant, avoid opening suspicious links, and immediately report these attempts through our official channels so we can act against scammers,” urged Atty. Ibay.

Customers may report suspicious messages to Smart’s HuliSCAM portal at https://smart.com.ph/huliscam. They may also call the hotline of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) at 1326. Customers may also file a complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) at www.ntc.gov.ph or report scams through its consumer hotline at 1682.

Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings™ Game — game review

The Lord of the Rings franchise has always been popular throughout the years. J.R.R. Tolkien’s books have drawn many people into Middle-earth, spawning books, movies, TV shows, and, naturally, video games. While the history of the Lord of the Rings video games dates back to 1982, many Lord of the Rings games span various genres. After 40+ years, there have been mixed reactions to the games, yet fans of the games want to see more (as of this writing, Amazon Games is developing a Lord of the Rings MMORPG). Does Tales of the Shire scratch the itch that Middle-earth fans want?

I will fully disclose that life simulation games were never among my favorite game genres. In my honest opinion, you play video games, after all, to escape from real life, and life simulation games are usually extensions of real life (think The Sims or Second Life) which, for me, defeats the purpose of becoming a hero that saves the princess or any other video game trope that you can think of when you fire up the video game console or PC. Knowing this, I decided to give this game a chance, because, after all, it’s Middle-earth, and that doesn’t exist in real life, right?

You start by creating your own customizable Hobbit character and settling in the village of Bywater. You live the day of a Hobbit, hunting, fishing, gardening, and foraging for resources. While the graphics are nothing to write home about and closely resemble something that could have been released for the PlayStation 2, graphics have hardly been a benchmark for a good game, especially as I approach two decades of reviewing video games (longer if you count all the contributions I’ve made to GameFAQs). Like any good life simulation game, you can customize your home to your liking, and that was fun to do for about 30 minutes or so, when you realize you have to work around the static environment as opposed to building something that truly reflects your personality.

One major slip-up here is no voice acting, which is inexcusable in 2025, as even small studios can muster up voice acting, and seeing Gandalf mute doesn’t seem right to me. Second, for a cozy single-player game, there is an awful lot of grinding, which leads to immense feelings of sunk cost fallacy as you try to collect everything in the game. You can unlock decorations by completing quests, but most of them are much of the same and also constitute grinding. Cooking tries to shore up this rather pedestrian effort of a game, but, once again, you have to grind harder than most life simulation games to get these recipes. Building relationships with the NPCs is also fun, but sadly stifled by the lack of voice acting.

One of the saving graces of this game is that it feels like Middle-earth when you have everything unlocked, which took me about 20 or so hours, even with the massive grindfest and small distractions here and there. The game even plays like a PS2 game in that there are lots of bugs and glitches. Thankfully, the nature of always-online consoles and PCs means that these things can be fixed, but this first impression left me sad and disappointed, as living life in Middle-earth could have been done a lot better.

Over the years, many games have caught my eye through trailers and demo gameplay, only to leave me disappointed. Tales of the Shire has a great premise: living life in Middle-earth with your fellow hobbits and other Lord of the Rings characters. Sadly, the grindfests and what looks like an unfinished product show that Weta Workshop should stick to what it’s good at: special effects, makeup, props, costumes, and the like (aside from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, it has also done work for the iconic TV series Xena: Warrior Princess). If you’re a fan of hobbits, this merits a play, but I would wait for the MMORPG to have a truly immersive Lord of the Rings experience.

Is Fintech reshaping the breadwinner economy in Filipino families?

Modern money has changed how we give and care, but the old burdens remain.

Payday isn’t the celebration it used to be. For many breadwinners, it’s a short sigh of relief before the next round of responsibilities kicks in. A day or two later, the texts start arriving: the electric bill is due, someone needs medicine, the internet is about to be cut. You tap, transfer, and move on. Often these requests come mid-commute or during a quick break, so seamlessly folded into the day that sending money no longer feels like a decision but a reflex.

This rhythm is now the norm for many young Filipinos carrying their families’ financial weight. What makes it possible isn’t just duty or culture. It’s the infrastructure. Fintech, especially e-wallets and digital transfers, has transformed how care and obligation flow. What once meant standing in line at a remittance center or wiring money days in advance now takes seconds. Padala has become real-time, invisible, and ever-present.

And this isn’t just an economic shift. It’s cultural. Money transfers have become a language of responsibility and solidarity. Some even joke that a GCash transfer is today’s “love language.” Behind the joke is a quiet truth: when sending support is this easy, the requests keep coming.

Which raises a harder question: if the strain is growing, is that a failure of fintech or a reflection of how much we’ve come to rely on it? Technology doesn’t erase expectations. More often it sharpens them. If fintech is now part of how Filipinos show care, it is also exposing the habits, assumptions, and quiet pressures that have always existed in families.

The evolution of padala

Not too long ago, sending money home followed a familiar rhythm. Every 15th and 30th, breadwinners made their way to banks or remittance centers, queued up, filled out forms, and waited for their turn. The process took effort, and that effort created a pause. Support was tied to schedules, visible and deliberate, and easier to manage both financially and emotionally.

These days, with GCash or Maya, there’s no waiting in line. A request comes through—a quick text, a missed call, even just an emoji—and the money is there almost immediately. The speed is liberating, but it also changes the tone. Support is no longer scheduled, it’s expected on demand.

The emotional weight of seamlessness

Behavioral economists have long pointed out how design shapes behavior. Nudge Theory suggests that our choices are often steered by how options are presented, and in fintech, the design does much of the steering. Big buttons, saved contacts, and one-tap transfers make sending money feel effortless. What used to be a moment of budgeting, asking “Can I spare this? Should I wait?” is now just a swipe.

Richard Thaler’s work on mental accounting explains why this matters. When money moves in cash, you feel it leaving your hand. When it moves digitally, that discomfort fades. We track it less, reflect less, and act more on impulse. For breadwinners, that missing moment of hesitation can quietly add up to fatigue and financial strain.

When credit fills the gap

To keep pace with constant requests, many breadwinners turn to online lending apps and Buy Now, Pay Later platforms. On the surface, they offer flexibility. In practice, they normalize debt. Borrowing doesn’t always feel like debt when it happens inside a sleek interface. One app pays another, and the cycle deepens.

Within families, this creates a hidden economy of borrowing. Some breadwinners quietly extend repayment timelines or shuffle funds between apps to meet requests. Relatives may never know the money came from credit. The support looks the same, but underneath, limits are being stretched thin.

Using Fintech wisely

Fintech has made giving quick and frictionless. But for breadwinners, conscious use matters. Regaining control doesn’t mean refusing to help. It means creating boundaries that keep care sustainable.

One way is to add back small pauses. Not every message needs an instant reply. Some breadwinners choose to batch transfers once a week, creating space to review budgets before sending. Even simple habits, like logging out of apps or turning off shortcuts, can buy a moment to think before hitting send. Behavioral economists call this “sludge for good,” the idea of adding small bits of friction in systems designed for speed.

It also helps to make the invisible visible. Because digital padala doesn’t feel like handing over cash, they soften what Ofer Zellermayer calls the “pain of paying.” That ease makes it easy to underestimate how much you’re giving. Regularly reviewing transaction histories, using built-in budget tools, or even sharing data with family can make the flow clearer. From there, it’s easier to shift from reactive giving to structured support, such as setting a fixed monthly allowance instead of responding to every single request.

The harder conversation is about limits. In many Filipino families, even a simple “not now” can feel harsh or taboo. But setting limits doesn’t have to mean pulling away. Framed differently, boundaries are a way to make support last—to protect the ability to keep showing up, not take it away.

Some families are beginning to rethink the setup. Instead of leaving one breadwinner to carry the weight, they pool money for recurring expenses or bring younger members into budgeting and goal-setting. Shared responsibility turns digital finance from a source of quiet strain into a tool for resilience.

The work of care shouldn’t be a one-way transfer

Ease doesn’t always bring freedom. For many breadwinners, it also means being exposed to constant requests and carrying the quiet fatigue of never-ending giving.

But technology isn’t fate. It bends to how we use it, how we talk about it, and the boundaries we choose to set. When giving is made more deliberate, more visible, and shared within the family, fintech stops being a drain and starts becoming a tool for strength.

Fintech has made caring faster and easier than ever. With clearer limits and open conversations, it can also make care sustainable. Because in Filipino families, where love so often travels through money, clarity is its own kind of care.

We didn’t just take the TechLife Pad Lite 8” out of the box and read the spec sheet. We put it to the test in the real world. I used it for a few weeks to see how it handled light browsing, reading, and streaming, then passed it on to my sister, a college student, to see how it would fare in actual student life. Her academic battles include juggling virtual classes, PDF readings, and the occasional YouTube crash course, so this tablet had its work cut out for it. Priced at PHP4,999, it promises the basics: portability, essential features, and a budget-friendly tag. The question is whether it can keep up with a day in the life of a busy student.

Design: 4.5/5

The TechLife Pad Lite 8” keeps things simple and practical. With its matte metallic finish, it feels light yet sturdy. At just 337.9 grams and 8.5mm thick, it easily fits in small school bags and can be used one-handed. Even with its budget-friendly price, the design doesn’t look cheap. It has a clean, modern look that you could comfortably flaunt in class or at a café, even without dressing it up in a cute tablet case. While it does not aim for a premium aesthetic, the 8-inch screen is large enough for comfortable reading and streaming, making it well-suited for on-the-go study.

Powered by a UNISOC T606 processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage (expandable via microSD), plus LTE connectivity through a nano SIM slot, the TechLife Pad Lite 8″ covers the basics for online classes, research, and casual entertainment. Performance is modest but reliable for everyday student tasks. The display is adequate for reading and watching videos, though not as vibrant as higher-end models.

User Experience: 3.5/5

Both in my testing and my sister’s daily use, the tablet handled social media scrolling, document reading, and video streaming without major issues. LTE connectivity was especially handy for studying during commutes or between classes. She found it ideal for quick reviews before exams and watching tutorials on YouTube. The main drawbacks are shorter battery life under heavy use and slow charging, so power breaks need to be planned. The speakers are passable for casual use.

But the TechLife Pad Lite 8″ isn’t just for classes. It is also a flexible sidekick for different parts of the day. You can prop it up on your desk during cooking to follow a recipe, keep it in your bag for watching lectures while stuck in traffic, or use it in the library for quick research without dragging your laptop along. It’s also handy for reviewing slides in the cafeteria, following along with online workout sessions, or reading e-books before bed without holding a heavy device. For team projects, it’s light enough to pass around for quick brainstorming notes or video calls.

At PHP4,999, the TechLife Pad Lite 8” delivers portability, LTE support, and expandable storage in a compact package. It’s a solid choice for students looking for an affordable study companion without unnecessary extras. While there are trade-offs in display sharpness and battery endurance, they are reasonable for its price point. If you have been saving a portion of your allowance and want to invest in something essential that you will actually use every day, this tablet is a smart choice.

Bottomline

The TechLife Pad Lite 8” delivers where it truly matters for Filipino students: reliability, portability, and value. It’s the kind of gadget that can quietly become a daily best friend. Affordable yet capable, it’s a device the masses can embrace. If we’re being completely honest, it’s the kind of tool that can open the door to digitalization for the average-class learner, helping bridge the gap between potential and opportunity — all while offering substantial quality.
