The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed a USD115-million (in Philippine peso equivalent) financing package with Asialink Finance Corporation to expand working capital and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Philippines, particularly those led by women.
The financing package, led by ADB as the mandated lead arranger, bookrunner, and structuring bank, includes USD50-million from ADB, USD50-million from HSBC through the HSBC ASEAN Growth Fund, and USD15-million from Security Bank Corporation. HSBC participated as a joint mandated arranger and bookrunner, while Security Bank Capital Investment Corporation acted as the mandated lead arranger. Paulton & Company served as the exclusive financial advisor to Asialink for the transaction.
This initiative is expected to increase Asialink’s total loans to SMEs from PHP8.8-billion (approximately USD150-million) to PHP13-billion, with over half of the financing dedicated to women-owned or women-led SMEs. Asialink aims to double its female entrepreneur borrowers to at least 20,000 and introduce tailored loan products for women business owners.
“Nonbank financial institutions play a key role in providing services to unbanked SMEs. This partnership between ADB and Asialink will enhance SMEs’ access to finance, especially for women entrepreneurs who face greater challenges in obtaining capital,” said Suzanne Gaboury, ADB Director General for Private Sector Operations. “This project underscores ADB’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion and supporting the growth of SMEs, which are critical drivers of the Philippine economy.”
Addressing the Financing Gap for Women Entrepreneurs
The financing gap for SMEs in the Philippines is estimated at around PHP67-billion to PHP180-billion. Surveys reveal a significant disparity in financial inclusion: 50% of SMEs owned by men transact using bank accounts compared to only 24% of women. Furthermore, only 4% of women-led SMEs have received bank loan approvals, compared to 14% of male-owned SMEs.
“This partnership with ADB marks a transformative milestone in Asialink’s mission to empower SMEs across the Philippines, especially women-led businesses that remain underrepresented in the financial sector. Through this collaboration, we aim to expand nationwide, digitize and innovate loan processes, and ensure entrepreneurs have access to reliable financial solutions,” said Robert B. Jordan Jr., CEO of Asialink Finance Corporation.
Supporting SME Growth and Innovation
Established in 1997, Asialink has become a leading nonbank financial institution in the Philippines, with 247 branches nationwide. SMEs account for more than half of its portfolio, with secure lending provided through motor vehicles as collateral. Earlier this year, Asialink received a PHP4-billion strategic investment from Creador, a regional private equity investor supporting best-in-class financial services companies. The ADB financing package will further accelerate Asialink’s growth and innovation efforts.
ADB remains dedicated to creating a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, continuing its mission to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members, with 49 from the region.

Mangrove conservation in Eastern Visayas gets a boost as Sun Life Financial-Philippines Foundation, Inc. (Sun Life Foundation) and ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation, Inc. (ABS-CBN Foundation) launch the Integrated Mangrove Citizen Science and Sustainable Livelihood Initiative.
Mangroves are vital ecosystems that act as carbon sinks, fish nurseries, livelihood sources, and natural breakwaters, yet they are rapidly disappearing. The project, made possible by funding from global financial services company Sun Life Canada, aims to improve mangrove conservation by supporting community-based social enterprises and equipping locals with tools and techniques for enhanced mangrove management.
“Protecting mangroves is more important than ever given their role in mitigating the impacts of climate change,” says Kristine Dianne Millete, Executive Director of the Sun Life Foundation. “We hope that this project will empower communities to actively care for mangroves while sustainably reaping the benefits these ecosystems provide.”
Meanwhile, Roberta Lopez-Feliciano, Managing director of ABS-CBN Foundation, highlighted the importance of collaboration in this pursuit. “The project would not happen if we didn’t have the right partner and the right people in place. Having partners on the ground supporting the initiative is crucial.”
The project involves collaboration with three community organizations from three sites: the San Juan by the Bay Service Cooperative (SJBSC) in Brgy. San Juan, Sta. Rita, Samar; the Barobaybay Mangrove and Marine Conservationist Association (BMMCA) in Brgy. Barobaybay, Calbiga, Samar; and the Naga, Rawis, Villa Corro, Looc Mangrove and Fisherfolk Association (NARAVIL MFA), Inc. in Brgy. Looc in Cabucgayan, Biliran.
As the philanthropic arm of life insurer Sun Life Philippines, the Sun Life Foundation supports holistic initiatives that promote health, education, and environmental sustainability.

Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 5 N, the first electric vehicle (EV) model to wear an N badge, has been named the ‘Performance Car of the Year’ for 2025 at the prestigious China Car of the Year (China COTY) Awards.
The China COTY Awards, which started in 2012, is considered the most fair and authoritative in the country. It is evaluated by a panel of 48 representative automobile journalists and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from across China. The award is divided into seven categories, including the overall ‘Car of the Year’ in China and six other categories based on specific vehicle types.
IONIQ 5 N’s impressive performance and innovation were recognized in early November when it was named a Top 10 Finalist for the 2025 China COTY in the ‘Performance Car of the Year’ category. A few days later on November 22, it advanced to the Top 3, competing against Lynk & Co and Mercedes-Benz. This achievement highlights the rigorous test drives conducted by the judges, who selected IONIQ 5 N from a pool of 112 models across seven different categories. The high scores awarded to IONIQ 5 N underscore its exceptional performance and innovative features.
“Hyundai N made its debut in the Chinese market last year and has actively showcased the company’s high-performance electrification technology through the launch of IONIQ 5 N this year,” said Yong Il Yin, vice president and head of China N Brand Business Group. “Moving forward, we will continue to expand the unique and exciting experiences offered by the Hyundai N brand to strengthen our position in the Chinese market.”
Hyundai Motor is bolstering its presence in the Chinese market, focusing on both EVs and its high-performance N brand. The latter launched at the 2023 Shanghai International Motor Show and is integral to the company’s strategy in the world’s largest automotive market. Through the N brand, Hyundai Motor is enhancing customer experience through track day events and other events, highlighting vehicles like Elantra N and IONIQ 5 N.
Introduced in July 2023 as Hyundai N’s first EV, IONIQ 5 N represents a new segment of driver-focused high-performance EVs through new technologies and elevated racetrack capability, signaling the first step in N’s electrification strategy. It combines the standard IONIQ 5’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with N’s motorsport-bred technologies and leverages N’s expertise from electrified ‘Rolling Labs’ to maximize the EV’s high-performance capabilities. IONIQ 5 N has been widely praised in the media as ‘groundbreaking,’ a ‘game-changer,’ and the ‘benchmark’ for high-performance EVs.
IONIQ 5 N has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, underscoring its exceptional performance and innovation in the EV market. Earlier this year, IONIQ 5 N was honored as the ‘World Performance Car’ at the 2024 World Car Awards. Later, it received recognition in the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems and was named the ‘2024 Performance EV of the Year’ in the ‘Under USD100,000’ category by Road & Track. Additionally, IONIQ 5 N won Top Gear’s ‘2023 Car of the Year Award’ and Car Magazine’s ‘World’s Best Electric Performance Car.’ These numerous accolades serve to highlight the IONIQ 5 N’s significant impact in the EV market.

In this season of love and thanksgiving, DITO Telecommunity, the fastest-growing telco provider in the country, sends its heartfelt gratitude as DITO ends the year with another significant milestone.
During the recently concluded DITO year-end thanksgiving, DITO chief executive officer Eric Alberto announced that the young telco is now the Philippines’ Fastest Mobile Network as awarded by independent mobile analytics company Opensignal, dominating in 14 categories and outranking the two telco giants in the speed race.
“I’m honored to share with all of you that independent mobile analytics Opensignal awarded DITO as the Fastest Mobile Network in the Philippines, where we excelled in the speed race. These milestones are not just accomplishments nor mere awards; they are reflections of DITO’s dedication and affirm the strength and reliability of our network,” Alberto said.
Based on Opensignal’s October 2024 Mobile Network Experience report, DITO stood out in the awards, earning recognition across numerous categories. This achievement highlights the young telco as the country’s most awarded and fastest in 5G speeds and overall experience.
In terms of speed, DITO sweeps all four speed awards across overall and 5G. DITO confirms its superiority in 5G download speed, boasting a speed of 287.2Mbps, nearly double Smart’s figure trailing with 147.5Mbps and easily surpassing Globe’s 95.2Mbps. Users also see the fastest overall download speeds on DITO’s network at 34.6Mbps, with the two telco giants Smart and Globe behind at 28.6Mbps and 20.9Mbps, respectively.
2024 is indeed a break-out year for DITO. Alberto also shared the other significant milestones of DITO this year, including the successful fifth and final technical audit with 86.3 percent coverage, capping off the year with 14 million subscribers, and winning back-to-back Ookla wins as the Rated # 1 Mobile Network in the country (Q3-Q4 2023 and Q1-Q2 2024) to now the Fastest Mobile Network— DITO is indeed making strides in the Philippine telco landscape and its presence is highly felt and recognized.
As this year ends, Alberto remains steadfast in saying that DITO will continue to innovate and improve its technology because DITO’s mission remains clear— to bridge the digital divide and uplift Filipino communities.

PUP Bagong Himig Serenata (BHS), the resident choral group of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and known as “The Country’s Pioneer Dancing Chorale,” brought the streets to the stage in their recently concluded recital, KALye USAp: Duyog sa Pagkakaisa, held on December 6, 2024, at Tanghalang PUP in the COC Compound, Sta. Mesa, Manila. This one-of-a-kind recital redefined traditional choral performances by incorporating bodabil, a theatrical form blending singing, acting, and dancing.
More than a performance, KALye USAp was a bold artistic statement that combined entertainment and advocacy. Through this, the ensemble shined a light on topics such as the jeepney phaseout, gender equality, and territorial sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea. These themes, rooted in the everyday concerns of Filipinos, were approached with artistry and depth, which transformed casual street gossip into conversations of substance.
Inspired by Teresa Street, a familiar and beloved location for many PUP students, the recital took the familiar “tsismis” of the streets and used it to highlight social issues that matter. The title KALye USAp draws from the choir’s two clusters: Kalawili (KAL) and Hiliusa (USA). Both of these names symbolize harmony, reflecting how the choir seeks unity both within their group and in the conversations they hope to spark. Just like Teresa Street brings together different people with different stories, KALye USAp united a variety of voices that opened up space for dialogue and mutual understanding.
One of the event’s highlights was the formal elevation of the Batch ’23-’24 trainees into full-fledged members of Bagong Himig Serenata. This milestone honors the trainees’ dedication and reflects the choir’s continuous effort to guide and develop the talents of its members, providing an environment where they can improve and succeed.
KALye USAp is part of Bagong Himig Serenata’s long standing tradition of innovative productions. October has always been the group’s recital month, followed by an annual concert every December. These events pave the way for their biggest showcase—the Annual Choral Fest, held every March, coinciding with Art’s Month and Women’s Month.
The Choral Fest is a grand celebration that gathers choirs from across campuses and beyond, showing unity through diverse harmonies. Each year brings fresh themes, emphasizing creativity, advocacy, and the choir’s ability to adapt to changing times.
The PUP Bagong Himig Serenata extends heartfelt gratitude to its supporters, partner organizations, alumni, and audience for making this event a resounding success. Follow their social media platforms for more highlights and updates on their future performances.
