    Held at the prestigious Manila Hotel, the Tinta Print Media Conference 2024, organized by the United Print Media Group of the Philippines (UPMGPhil), brought together media professionals, creative leaders, and businessmen for a transformative day of insights and innovation. With the theme “Driving Truth and Business Impact,“ the conference explored the evolving challenges and opportunities shaping the future of print and media in an increasingly digital world.

    The day began with a ceremonial ribbon cutting led by UPMGPhil President Barbie L. Atienza, joined by distinguished publishers and members. Angel Guerrero, the conference chairperson, set the tone with a powerful overview that highlighted the event’s aim to empower media practitioners with actionable insights and innovative strategies.

    In a speech delivered by PCO Senior Undersecretary Emerald Anne Ridao, representing PCO Acting Secretary Cesar Chavez emphasized the lasting importance of print media. He expressed his privilege to take part in a meaningful discussion about the value of print media in an era dominated by digitalization. Chavez underscored that print media will continue to be relevant in the years and decades ahead. While recognizing the convenience the digital revolution offers in accessing information, he affirmed that this does not make print media obsolete.

    A major highlight of the Tinta Print Media Conference 2024 was the session on Media Data and Consumer Insights, moderated by Marichu Villanueva, Associate Editor of The Philippine Star. The discussion featured industry experts sharing transformative strategies for understanding audience behavior. Martin Peñaflor, Founder and CEO of Tangere, showcased data-driven approaches that enhance audience engagement, while Dr. Guido David, OCTA Research Fellow, provided key insights into shifting media consumption patterns. The lively discussion underscored the importance of using research to guide impactful communication strategies.

    The importance of ethical advertising took center stage as Robby Aligada, Executive Director of the Advertising Standards Council (ASC), emphasized self-regulation as a cornerstone for maintaining public trust in media. His talk resonated with the audience, highlighting the delicate balance between creative freedom and responsibility.

    Renowned broadcaster and SM Investments consultant Rico Hizon shared an engaging session that detailed how the conglomerate aligns innovation with corporate responsibility. His insights illustrated how forward-thinking communication strategies can position organizations for sustainable success while fostering meaningful connections with stakeholders. He also gave out prizes to the delegates, adding an interactive and rewarding element to his session.

    Dante “Klink” Ang II, Secretary of the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, delivered an insightful discussion on the future of traditional print media and the need for business models to adapt to a rapidly changing landscape. He acknowledged the resilience of newspapers, expressing optimism about their ability to withstand the threat of obsolescence.

    He further challenged the audience to reflect on the sector’s long-term viability by posing a thought-provoking question: “Yes, newspapers have survived, but are we truly out of the woods?” This statement underscored the ongoing challenges faced by print media, from evolving reader habits to the dominance of digital platforms, and the need for continued innovation to remain relevant in a competitive media landscape.

    The battle against misinformation was a key focus of the session led by Aileen Perez, Deputy Head for Social Media at GMA Network. She highlighted the network’s commitment to promoting responsible journalism through its Panata Kontra Fake News initiative, a program designed to educate and empower audiences in discerning credible information from falsehoods.

    Perez also addressed the rise of meme journalism, a growing trend where information is packaged in humorous, shareable formats to attract online engagement. While acknowledging its potential to reach wider audiences, she emphasized the importance of balancing entertainment with accuracy and integrity. Her presentation underscored the critical role of media in safeguarding truth, combating the spread of misinformation, and adapting to the changing dynamics of how news is consumed in the digital age.

    Thomas Jacob, COO of WAN-IFRA, joined the conference via Zoom from Germany to discuss global trends in news media. His session explored the rise of AI in content creation and the growing importance of audience-driven news models, offering valuable lessons for local media practitioners.

    The Tinta Print Media Conference 2024 concluded with a showcase of the world’s best creative campaigns, presented by David Guerrero, Creative Chairman of BBDO Guerrero. Featuring award-winning works from the Cannes Lions, the session celebrated the enduring power of storytelling and the ability of creative campaigns to drive change and influence perceptions.

    Badette M. Cunanan, co-chairperson of the conference, closed the event with a heartfelt message celebrating the collective effort to advance the media and print industries. She emphasized the importance of collaboration in navigating an ever-evolving landscape, expressing optimism about the future of Philippine media.

    Sumsub: APAC Sees 121% increase in identity fraud, with Deepfakes becoming a growing threat

    Sumsub, a full-cycle verification platform, released its fourth annual Identity Fraud Report, highlighting a continued rise in identity fraud across the Asia Pacific region (APAC), driven by increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics and the widespread use of Fraud-as-a-Service (FaaS). According to internal verification data, there was a 121% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase in identity fraud in 2024 across the region, with significant surges recorded in Singapore (207%), Thailand (206%) and Indonesia (201%). Notably, deepfake fraud saw a 194% YoY spike in APAC and increased 4x globally, now making up 7% of all fraud attempts in 2024.

    “As the digital economy in APAC continues to grow, the evolving nature of fraud presents new challenges that businesses cannot afford to ignore. With tactics becoming more sophisticated and fraud becoming more accessible, the need for enhanced verification measures is more urgent than ever. Robust identity protection is not just a preventive measure but a fundamental part of securing the future of digital businesses and protecting consumers in an increasingly complex landscape,” said Penny Chai, vice president of Business Development, APAC at Sumsub.

    Other key findings from the report include: 

    • The top 5 identity fraud types in 2024 include: fake documents (50%), chargebacks (15%), account takeovers (12%), deepfakes (7%), and fraud networks (4%). 
    • The top 5 industries with the highest fraud growth rate in 2024 are dating (265%), online media (180%), banking & insurance (162%), fintech (156%) and edtech (144%). 
    • South Korea experienced the highest increase in deepfake attacks at 735%, followed by Cambodia and Singapore, both at 240%.
    • 85% of respondents of Sumsub’s Fraud Exposure Survey 2024 in APAC are concerned about deepfakes, expressing fear about their future impact on elections. 

    How Fraud-as-a-Service is Enabling Widespread Cybercrime

    The economics of fraud have shifted dramatically, making it more affordable than ever for fraudsters to execute large-scale operations with minimal investment. Today, anyone can access the resources needed to launch fraudulent schemes, regardless of their technical expertise. This shift is largely driven by FaaS platforms and widely available fraud tools, which provide a range of services to facilitate cybercrime, including identity theft, account takeovers, and financial fraud. The scalability offered by FaaS models further amplifies the issue, enabling fraudsters to launch a higher volume of attacks and making it even more difficult for businesses to detect, prevent, and mitigate fraud effectively. 

    The Growing Complexity of Fraud in the Digital Age

    Alongside the rise in mass fraud, there has been a notable increase in more sophisticated, organized fraud schemes. These operations, often involving coordinated fraud networks and money muling, target multiple platforms and industries, and are more difficult to detect and disrupt, leading to significant financial losses for businesses. In Q1 2024, approximately one in every 100 online platform users was associated with a fraud network. In fact, seven of the top-10 jurisdictions for such fraud networks are concentrated in the APAC region, including Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

    Safeguarding the Future of APAC’s Digital Economy 

    As economies across APAC continue to digitalize, the threat of identity fraud will only escalate. The shift towards a digital-first economy presents greater opportunities for fraudsters, making it even more critical for businesses and governments to take proactive measures. Without a robust framework for identity verification and fraud prevention, the rise in cybercrime will continue to undermine the growth of the digital economy and erode consumer trust.

    Super Mario Party Jamboree game review

    In my experience, party games can be fun, challenging, and competitive. A common marketing phrase that has existed long before gaming has been “fun for the whole family,” and party games can get everyone involved—your parents, siblings, relatives, and friends can all join in and make gaming a family and/or friends event. Throw in the classic Mario characters we all know and love, and it becomes even better as multiple generations of people will be familiar with our favorite Italian plumber and his ever-growing cast of friends in Super Mario Party Jamboree.

    Players start in the Party Plaza and can choose from a cast of 22 characters, including Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Daisy, Peach, and more. New characters include Pauline from the Donkey Kong series and Ninji from Super Mario Bros. 2. The main mode, simply named Mario Party, lets you and three other friends (or AI-controlled characters) play a board game where whoever collects the most stars wins. Sounds simple enough, right? There is a lot that Jamboree offers in this installment.

    You can collect items that can help or harm your chances at winning, and at the end of everyone’s turns, you play a minigame that requires mastery of motion controls (although you can turn them off). Jamboree Buddies can come in and help you win the game as well after playing the mini-game, and they can last three turns. For instance, you can have Waluigi steal coins from your opponents when he passes them. For those with that competitive spirit in them, you can also play with “Pro Rules” that removes most luck-based aspects in the game and truly makes it a test of skill.

    For those going at it solo, you can play “Party Planner Trek” mode and talk to various NPCs who give you quests or mini-games to collect Mini-Stars to unlock customization options for your characters. When you collect a certain number of Mini-Stars, you then play a Boss Minigame (complete with boss health bars and all). Another mode called “Minigame Bay” mode allows you to freely play any minigame or a set of minigames that can be arranged by themes, allowing you to truly challenge yourself even in an unbalanced way (1v3). Boss Rush sub-mode, which is unlocked after 30 in-game achievements, allows you and your friends to compete in boss minigames with the highest score winning.

    One of my favorite modes that utilizes motion controls is “Rhythm Kitchen” mode, a rhythm-based minigame with a cooking theme. “Toad’s Factory” mode is a puzzle-based game where players have to move a ball to a goal (and a corporate team-building exercise if you so wish). The mode that truly tested my party game chops was “Paratroopa Flight School” mode as you have to move singular Joy-Con controllers to mimic flapping wings a la the notorious 2013 mobile game Flappy Bird. You can compete in sub-modes for time attack, carry characters to destinations, or even just fly around aimlessly.

    SUper Mario

    Jamboree brings a pretty interesting mode called “Bowser Kaboom Squad” mode which allows eight players to fight Imposter Bowser through various objectives and by playing minigames for objects to defeat him faster. “Koopathlon” mode has 20 players competing to complete laps around a board through collecting coins in minigames. After three of these minigames, a Bowser-themed minigame happens when players can be sent backward on the board if they lose. You can play either through local or online multiplayer, allowing you to keep the fun going in-person or online. You can even climb an online leaderboard by playing minigames and compete to be the very best not only among your friends and family, but also among people all over the world.

    Super Mario Party Jamboree is fun for everyone, bringing the nostalgia of previous Mario Party entries while introducing the characters to a whole new generation of gamers. The Mario franchise is Shigeru Miyamoto’s brainchild, and Jamboree continues to build on a legacy that has lasted for over 40 years and continues to wow all gamers to this very day. It’s a solid addition for the holiday season, and a good time sink if you want to get competitive with friends, family, and even Internet strangers.

    New innovation challenge for the fast and efficient assessment of forest roads conditions

    Harvests from timber trees are collected every 15-21 years. But before logging and transport, existing forest roads for transporting wood need to be reviewed and repaired. Currently, this assessment is performed manually by shelling every 300m to obtain the thickness of the layer of aggregates per section. If it is under 12cm, it is necessary to add more gravel so that the road has at least 12cm thickness. 

    In this context, CMPC is looking for more efficient alternatives to measure forest road conditions. The solution to this challenge is open and may come through either a technology that quickly measures the thickness of gravel or through a new agile process that directly tests the mechanical capacity of the road for truck transit. 

    Participation is open to engineering companies, startups, specialists in soil mechanics and digital technologies applicable to the construction and maintenance of roads, etc. but also to any company from another industry or tech center willing to propose a solution to this challenge. 

    This is an innovation contest with the opportunity to co-develop with one of the largest Chilean multinationals with a presence in 11 countries and more than 50 plants producing wood, pulp, and other renewable products. The winner of the innovation challenge for the efficient assessment of forest roads conditions would start with an initial project to test the solution together with the CMPC team and would be rewarded with USD20,000 for validation.

    HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 reviewed

    As the debut model of its BE series, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 raises the bar with its Wi-Fi 7 technology. Honestly, this is my first experience with HUAWEI’s implementation of Wi-Fi 7, but that only fuels my curiosity to see how it stands out. With promises of faster speeds, lower latency, and improved stability, I’m eager to put it to the test and discover just how much of a leap it offers.

    Design: 4/5

    Unboxing the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 is a no-frills experience — and that’s not a bad thing. As soon as I lift the cover, the device greets me front and center, neatly wrapped in protective plastic, ready for action. There’s no clutter or unnecessary extras, just a clear focus on what matters most — the router itself. 

    Huawei Wi-Fi BE3

    The HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 embraces a simple, minimalist design that’s both modern and practical. Different from its other BE/AX series, this model appears to have four antennas and adapting to a more vertical, space-saving form factor because of its standing upright structure. When it comes to size, it measures 148.8 x 215 x 71.5 with the antenna folded and 280 x 215 x 61.5 with the antenna extended. 

    Flipping the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 over, it has four LAN ports for wired connections, a power button, and power cable port. The front of the router features a single light indicator located just above the HUAWEI logo. The light is relatively subtle, but it clearly shows when the router is powered on. However, I do wish there were additional indicators to show the signal strength and Wi-Fi status, as this would provide more detailed feedback on the router’s performance.  

    Back in the box, there’s another compartment beneath the router where I was able to find the essentials: a power cable, a short Ethernet cable, a quick-start guide, and a warranty card.

    Diving into the most exciting part—the technology that powers it. The HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 runs on the latest Wi-Fi 7, offering blazing-fast speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps. What does that mean for you? Faster downloads, buttery-smooth streaming, and lag-free gaming. So, no more staring at “buffering” messages or waiting forever for larger files to upload. With its promises of speed, reliability, and the power to handle everything you throw at it, this router is built to keep up with your digital lifestyle. 

    The HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 also features Multi-Link Operation, allowing me to connect Wi-Fi 7 devices only to both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands simultaneously. This means I can enjoy faster, more stable connections across different devices without having to manually switch between networks. Another feature of the router is its built-in NP network acceleration engine, complete with a dedicated network processor and signal power amplifiers. It also includes a 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port for better speed and performance.

    HUAWEI also integrates this router with its AI Life app to provide a more secure and customizable connection experience. However, finding the app can be a bit tricky, especially for those who aren’t familiar with HUAWEI’s ecosystem. After scanning the QR code under the router, I expected to be directed to download the app, but it wasn’t available on the Google Play Store. This could be a hassle for users unfamiliar with HUAWEI’s app distribution process. A more straightforward approach would definitely improve the user experience. 

    User Experience: 4/5

    When it comes to setup, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 keeps things refreshingly simple. No confusing steps here—just plug in the power source, connect the Ethernet cable to the existing Wi-Fi, scan the QR code under the router to access the HUAWEI AI Life app, and you’ll be on a roll to connect any devices to the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3. 

    However, for those who are not familiar with the HUAWEI’s interfaces, it’ll be a bit of a chore. Since, I found myself changing the settings of my phone to download the AI Life app that can only be installed through the HUAWEI App Gallery, which is only found on any HUAWEI smartphone device. So, I wasn’t able to fully explore the AI Life app. However, I was able to find my way through by typing in the web address that can be found underneath the router. From there, I was able to customize the settings and password of the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 and also activated its Multi-Link Operation. 

    When it comes to performance, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 doesn’t mess around. Online gaming was buttery smooth with zero lag—a game-changer for those intense, split-second decisions. As for streaming 4K videos at 60fps? It’s an entirely different experience. The playback was so smooth and fluid that I couldn’t help but feel a little thrill of excitement.  No buffering, no stutters, even when multiple devices are connected—just uninterrupted, cinematic-quality streaming. 

    I decided to run this one to Ookla speed test, and the results were exactly what I expected—they perfectly matched the strong performance I’ve been experiencing with the Multi-Link Operation. The test showed that with Multi-Link Operation enabled, the download speed reached 416.03Mbps, while the upload speed hit 412.75Mbps. Latency was also impressive, with an idle latency of 5ms, a download latency of 11ms, and an upload latency of 36ms.

    But with Multi-Link Operation turned off, the speeds dropped a bit, showing 228.98Mbps for downloads and 184.98Mbps for uploads. Latency also shifted to 6ms for idle, 48ms for download, and 68ms for upload. While it’s not as fast as with Multi-Link enabled, these numbers are still pretty solid for regular browsing, light gaming, streaming, and everyday use.

    Here’s the real test—there’s one room on the second floor of our house that’s basically a Wi-Fi dead zone. No matter how strong our existing Wi-Fi is, it just can’t reach that spot, leaving us with a weak signal, or worse, no connection at all. 

    So, I put the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 to the test. With Multi-Link Operation enabled it was like night and day. Suddenly, I could work, stream, and even play games in that room with minimal issues. The connection was fast, stable, and most importantly, reliable. But here’s the catch — when Multi-Link Operation is turned off, the speed does drop a bit. However, it’s still fast enough for me to get through my work and enjoy my daily dose of entertainment without any major hiccups. When I moved around the house, excluding the dead spot room, the HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 continued to impress, delivering strong signals effortlessly to both my smartphone and laptop.

    The HUAWEI Wi-Fi BE3 SRP is priced at PHP3,999, which I’d consider quite affordable. I did expect the price to be a little higher based on how well it performed, but honestly, it’s a great bargain for the value you’re getting.

    Here are some reasons why the vivo V40 Lite is the perfect gift this season.

    1. The Powerful Specs

    The vivo V40 Lite is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 (5G Variant). The processor is paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. The internal storage is also expandable up to 1TB via the microSD slot.

    The vivo V40 Lite may not be as powerful as its older siblings, but it still packs a mean punch. It can still run most apps and games, when we tried the vivo V40 Lite we found that it handles esports games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, and Honor of Kings flawlessly. When it came to heavier games like Genshin Impact, it can still run it at medium settings but expect a few frame drops during high action sequences. 

    Here are some of the benchmarks we got from the vivo V40 Lite:

    The vivo V40 astounded us with its AI Aura Light portraits courtesy of its amazing triple Zeiss cameras. While the vivo V40 Lite does not have the same Zeiss optics, it nevertheless captures amazing pictures.

    We took the vivo V40 Lite on our trip to Singapore to check out what it can do. The phone did deliver and was able to capture great images even though it does not have the Zeiss partnership. Photos during daylight were crisp and sharp with realistic tones to them, while night shots were pleasantly good. Where the vivo V40 Lite shines is portraits, especially with its AI Aura Light Portrait. The AI Aura Light allowed subjects to be fully immersed in light while allowing the camera to capture a balanced image.

    3. Amazing AMOLED Display

    One of the immediate things you’ll notice with the vivo V40 Lite is its display. The vivo V40 Lite is equipped with an FHD+ (2400 x 1080) AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The smooth display is a great companion during our gaming sessions and movie catchup nights

    The display has a peak brightness of 1800 nits, more than enough to use the device under direct sunlight. This is especially useful when you want to capture those amazing pictures under the sun. We found this feature useful when watching movies on our flight with the plane windows opened.

    4. Extra capable batteries with 80W Fast charging and 4-year battery health

    Another notable feature of the vivo V40 Lite is its 5000 mAh battery. Sure a lot of smartphones now come with 5000 mAh battery as standard, what’s different with the vivo V40 Lite is its 24-dimension battery security protection. The protection ensures that the battery will retain longevity and durability. Based on vivo’s own testing, the battery with 1600 cycles will degrade to 80% of its initial capacity which if you’re charging and discharging fully once per day will take you four years to achieve.

    Aside from outstanding battery safety and health system, the vivo V40 Lite has an 80W FlashCharge capability. This means you can get 80% of power in just 30 minutes of charging. For those who regularly charge their device overnight, the vivo V40 Lite also has overnight charging protection where the phone adapts to its user’s sleep habits slowly charging the device before completely filling it up just before you wake up.

    5. Durable yet stylish body

    The vivo V40 Lite may not have a similar look to its older siblings, but it still a stunning phone to look at. It comes in three colors, Titanium Silver, Dreamy Violet, and Dynamic Black. Our review unit came in the Titanium Silver colorway, which looks like a design from a much more expensive device.

    The vivo V40 Lite has an ultra-slim design with just 7.79mm thick. It’s thinner than some of its competitors and at just 188g, it’s significantly lighter too.

    The camera setup departs from the vivo V40 with its cushion-cut diamond design. The camera module has a squarer design over the circular housing of the V40. On the sides of the V40 Lite are metallic high-gloss frame which adds to its premium looks. Finally, the Diamond Starry texture of the back helps in elevating the design of the phone as the reflective pattern adds a bit of sophistication.

    6. Made for every budget

    Finally, and what I think is the single best reason to get a vivo V40 Lite this holiday season – its price. The vivo V40 Lite comes in two distinct variants a 4G model and a 5G model. The 4G variant comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The only difference it has from what we used is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor. The vivo V40 Lite comes in at just PHP 13,999

    Meanwhile, there are two variants of the vivo V40 Lite 5G. Our review unit with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage will set you back PHP 15,999. While the other variant with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of internal storage retails for PHP 18,999.

This period sees a surge in online activities and financial transactions — from scouring for the best shopping deals to holiday travel bookings, ticket purchases, and cross-border money transfers for holiday gifts— this holiday shopping season is a prime time for cybercriminals to take advantage of the unsuspecting digital shoppers through phishing scams, fraudulent websites, and payment fraud.

    The impact is evident in the losses reported in the Philippines in 2024, totaling USD8.1B due to online scams. With online activity set to surge during the upcoming shopping season, Palo Alto Networks emphasizes the critical need for heightened cybersecurity awareness.

    “As the Philippines’ retail and e-commerce sectors continue to expand, the need for strengthened cybersecurity becomes even more critical,” said Oscar Visaya, country manager for Palo Alto Networks in the Philippines. “The first line of protection is always proactive defense.
