Palo Alto Networks: Stay safe this holiday shopping season with good cyber hygiene practices

With the year-end shopping season, Palo Alto Networks urges heightened cybersecurity vigilance. This period sees a surge in online activities and financial transactions — from scouring for the best shopping deals to holiday travel bookings, ticket purchases, and cross-border money transfers for holiday gifts— this holiday shopping season is a prime time for cybercriminals to take advantage of the unsuspecting digital shoppers through phishing scams, fraudulent websites, and payment fraud.

The impact is evident in the losses reported in the Philippines in 2024, totaling USD8.1B due to online scams. With online activity set to surge during the upcoming shopping season, Palo Alto Networks emphasizes the critical need for heightened cybersecurity awareness.

“As the Philippines’ retail and e-commerce sectors continue to expand, the need for strengthened cybersecurity becomes even more critical,” said Oscar Visaya, country manager for Palo Alto Networks in the Philippines. “The first line of protection is always proactive defense. Businesses must proactively secure their platforms and consumers should remain vigilant to ensure safety and security this holiday season.”

The rise of online shopping, digital payments, and holiday planning has transformed consumer behavior in the Philippines but has also introduced new risks. High online transaction volumes during key events like 11.11, Black Friday, and holiday travel planning create opportunities for cybercriminals, especially as consumers increasingly leverage digital payment methods for their transactions. Locally, 53% of consumers use QR codes, while 68% rely on mobile wallets, increasing exposure to cyber threats.

As online transactions surge, consumers face growing risks from threats like APK attacks — malicious software targeting mobile apps—and deepfake scams. To stay safe, consumers need to be on guard about their online security, especially during peak holiday seasons.

Palo Alto Networks offers the following best practices to ensure a safe experience:

    • Verify Authenticity: Double-check emails and offers before clicking on any links. Look out for misspellings, unusual domains, and suspicious attachments.
    • Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA for all accounts, especially when shopping online, to provide an extra layer of security.
    • Shop Through Official Channels: Avoid unofficial or unknown websites. Stick to trusted and secure online shopping platforms.
    • Beware of Phishing Scams: Be cautious of deals that seem too good to be true and fake order confirmation emails.
    • Strengthen Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for all online accounts and consider using a password manager for added security.
    • Avoid Sharing Personal Information: Never provide sensitive personal details like social security numbers or banking information in response to unsolicited requests.

At the same time, businesses must strengthen their defenses against cyber threats. Common threats during peak periods include social engineering tactics like phishing scams, which trick employees into sharing sensitive information, and ransomware attacks, which can lock down critical systems until a ransom is paid. Additionally, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks can overwhelm retail websites with traffic, causing potential downtime and disrupting the customer experience.

To effectively mitigate these risks, businesses should adopt a Zero Trust approach that emphasizes strict verification for every user and device accessing their networks, ensuring that no implicit trust is given. By integrating comprehensive threat detection, response, and data protection into a Zero Trust framework, businesses can enhance visibility, streamline security operations, and enable real-time threat responses. This approach not only safeguards sensitive data but also maintains a seamless user experience, ensuring both protection and convenience for consumers.

“Whether you’re a business owner, employee, or consumer, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. With the holiday season and Christmas shopping in full swing, Filipinos may feel more inclined to act on attractive offers without verifying the source. Always verify and adopt a Zero Trust thinking. If the offer is too good to be true, it probably is.  By fostering a culture of vigilance, we can protect ourselves and others in a landscape where threats are constant” added Visaya.

This brand will serve as a guarantee of quality, sustainability, and innovation, boosting consumer confidence and market penetration. At the same time, the introduction of the CocoMania mascots, CocoMania Buko and CocoMania Niyog, added a festive and engaging element to the launch, symbolizing the vibrancy and versatility of the coconut industry.
    • Championing Sustainability and Innovation: The trade fair emphasized the industry’s dedication to sustainable practices and innovative product development. Many exhibitors showcased eco-friendly products and cutting-edge technologies, demonstrating the sector’s commitment to environmental responsibility and value creation.
    • Facilitating Business Linkages and Market Access: The event fostered valuable business connections and networking opportunities, enabling local producers to engage with potential buyers, distributors, and investors from both domestic and international markets. This facilitated crucial partnerships and opened doors to new markets for Philippine coconut products.
    • Generating Substantial Economic Impact: Initial assessments indicate that the trade fair generated significant interest and facilitated business deals, injecting a much-needed boost to the Philippine coconut industry and contributing to its overall growth and development.

The COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair is a crucial component of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Program (CFIDP), mandated under Republic Act No. 11524, the Coconut Farmers and Industry Trust Fund Act. This comprehensive program, implemented through the collaborative efforts of 14 key agencies, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the coconut industry by empowering coconut farmers, diversifying income sources, expanding market reach, and alleviating poverty.

The resounding success of the inaugural COCONUTPhilippines Trade Fair signals a promising future for the Philippine coconut industry. With heightened global recognition, enhanced market access, and sustained growth, the industry is poised to make significant contributions to the country’s economic development and uplift the lives of millions of Filipinos.

Palo Alto Networks forecasts APAC cybersecurity landscape: Predictions for 2025 and beyond

Palo Alto Networks, the global cybersecurity leader, has released its 2025 cybersecurity predictions for the Asia Pacific region, outlining five key trends that cyber practitioners can expect to unfold in the coming twelve months and position their organizations for a more secure future.

Organizations across the APAC region have emphasized embedding AI into business processes in 2024. This includes cybersecurity processes, where organizations and their adversaries are engaged in an AI arms race. But alarmingly, according to a recent PwC report, more than 40% of leaders say they do not understand the cyber risks posed by emerging technologies like Generative AI. In 2025, AI will become central to cybersecurity strategy with organisations using AI to proactively mitigate risk. Crucially, they will also seek to secure their own AI models.

Simon Green, president of Asia Pacific and Japan at Palo Alto Networks, notes: “In 2025, our region will face a perfect storm of AI-driven cyber threats, escalating in scale, sophistication, and impact.   The days of fragmented security approaches are over—organizations must pivot to unified platforms powered by transparent and trustworthy AI to stay ahead. As quantum attacks loom and deepfakes become mainstream tools of deception, businesses will either innovate or risk being outpaced by adversaries. The stakes have never been higher, and trust will be the ultimate currency in this new era of cybersecurity. Those who fail to adapt risk not just breaches but irreparable damage to their reputation and resilience.”

From the anticipated surge in high-impact cyber attacks to the integration of quantum AI for energy-efficient solutions, these predictions for 2025 serve as essential guidelines for organizations to shape their cybersecurity strategies and maximize the potential of AI technologies.

Cyber Infrastructure will be centered around a single unified data security platform

In 2025, the organizations will address increased complexity by reducing the number of cybersecurity tools in use, and shifting to a unified platform, offering enhanced visibility and control. The ongoing cyber skills shortage will continue to accelerate this trend. A unified platform will provide end-to-end visibility and context, spanning code repositories, cloud workloads, networks, and SOCs. Ultimately this creates a more holistic security architecture with fewer dashboards. The convergence of all security layers onto a unified platform will optimize resources, improve overall efficiency, and enable organizations to build more resilient, adaptive defenses against evolving threats

2025 is the year deepfakes go mainstream in APAC

Deepfakes are already being used for nefarious purposes in the APAC region. While some have been used to spread political misinformation, the most effective attacks have targeted corporations for financial gain, as the employee at a Hong Kong engineering firm duped into wiring millions of dollars to a scammer who had used deepfakes to imitate the CFO and executive team on a video conference.

Savvy criminals will take note and use ever-improving generative AI technology to launch credible deepfake attacks. The use of audio deepfakes will also become more widespread in these attacks, as the available technology allows for highly credible voice cloning. We can expect deepfakes to be used alone or as part of a larger attack much more often in 2025.

Beyond the Quantum security hype: what to expect in 2025

Quantum computing projects are spreading across the region, with governments and venture capital firms investing heavily in local initiatives.

While quantum attacks on widely used encryption methods are not yet feasible, nation-state-backed threat actors are expected to intensify their “harvest now, decrypt later” tactics, targeting highly classified data with the intent to unlock it when quantum technology advances. This poses a risk to governments and businesses, with the potential to jeopardise civilian and military communications, undermine critical infrastructure, and overcome security protocols for most internet-based financial transactions. We will likely also see nation state actors target organisations developing quantum computers themselves, in corporate espionage attacks.

To counteract these threats effectively, all organizations will need to act and adopt quantum-resistant defenses, including quantum-resistant tunneling, comprehensive crypto data libraries, and other technologies with enhanced crypto-agility. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released final standards for post-quantum cryptography. Transitioning to these algorithms will help secure data against future quantum threats. Organizations that require high security should explore quantum key distribution (QKD) as a means of ensuring secure communications. As quantum computing continues to become more and more of a reality and potential threats loom, it will be essential to adopt these measures to keep pace with the rapidly evolving cyber landscape, prevent data theft, and ensure the integrity of critical systems.

For now, CIOs can debunk any hype around this topic to the board. Though significant progress with quantum annealing has been made, military-grade encryption has still not been broken.

Transparency will be the cornerstone for maintaining customer trust in the AI era

Regulators in the APAC region are starting to zone in on the data protection and cybersecurity implications of the growing use of AI models. This is part of an overall bid to build trust in AI use and encourage AI-driven innovation.

In 2025, APAC legislators’ AI focus on ethics, data protection and transparency, will remain, However, increased use of AI models will lead to greater emphasis being placed on AI security and the integrity and reliability of the data being used. Transparency and proactive communication about AI model mechanics—specifically regarding data collection, training datasets, and decision making processes—will be essential for building customer trust.

Increased focus on product integrity and supply chain security in 2025

In 2025, organizations can be expected to focus more on product integrity and supply chain resilience. Specifically, they will conduct much more thorough risk assessments, consider accountability and legal implications of business outages, and review insurance arrangements.

In cloud environments, where complexity and scale amplify risks, real-time visibility has become a necessity. Expect to see a greater focus on comprehensive monitoring involving continuous tracking of both infrastructure and application performance metrics.

Oscar Visaya, country manager, Philippines, Palo Alto Networks, shared, “As cybersecurity takes center stage across public and private sectors, reflected in the Philippines’ rise from 61st to 53rd in the 2024 UN Global Cybersecurity Index, these predictions aim to help organizations navigate 2025. With local insights—such as deepfakes and cyberattacks fueled by rapid digitalization—and trends across the Asia Pacific, prioritizing unified security platforms and AI advancements will be critical to securing the Philippines’ digital future.”

Filipino student crowned Red Bull Basement world champion for AgriConnect app, bound for Silicon Valley

Filipino ingenuity shone at the Red Bull Basement World Final as Aldrin Sojourner “Soj” Gamayon won the title of world champion. Held last December 5, 2024, at Tokyo, Japan, the award ceremony was the penultimate event of a three-day affair for the Red Bull Basement World Final, bringing together the winning teams from about 40 countries.

Gamayon earned his win for his innovation, “AgriConnect.” This ingenious idea for an agriculture tracking app will allow even remote farmers to monitor their crops, build resilience, and increase yield. Gamayon claimed that this idea was inspired by his family.

“This means so much because I’m doing it beyond myself. I’m doing this for Filipino farmers,” Gamayon said of his win. “This wasn’t just about competing or winning. It’s about sharing moments and memories with people who are like-minded. I share this with all the other teams who are here.”

Following his win, Gamayon plans to head home and establish more partnerships in the Philippines. “It’s vital for the next steps for my startup (is) to get it out there, to develop partnerships or collaborations with people that could help me further the idea. I firmly believe that I could not do this alone, it takes a village. And, I’ll do whatever it takes to make it successful.”

Gamayon, who came from a rice-farming family, shared that the idea for “AgriConnect” was developed after he returned from his internship in Singapore. He said, “I wanted to make an impact for the Filipinos. I do acknowledge that flying to another country to study is a privilege and I feel that there is a responsibility for me to give back. Piecing that together with my experiences and the things I really feel strongly (about) led me to the farmers.”

He added. “It’s always (been) my mantra to build something greater than myself.”

Being the first-ever representative of the Philippines to the Red Bull Basement World Final, Gamayon said that he hopes his win will inspire more Filipinos to pursue their innovation and drive their sense of ingenuity forward. His advice to young, aspiring innovators is, “to not think, just do.” He explained that most people do not progress with their start-ups because they overthink. “Coming in to Red Bull Basement, I had so many different directions and ideas. But, it only started because I actually just did it.”

During the finals, Gamayon and the other Top 10 finalists pitched their ideas to the global judging panel, which included Microsoft for Startups head Hans Yang, Plug and Play early-stage investor Letizia Royo-Villanova, influential entrepreneur and business mentor Jun Yuh, AMD Meet the Experts host and producer Ryan Sagare, and Red Bull cliff diving athlete and entrepreneur Molly Carlson.

Gamayon’s Agriconnect outshone ideas ranging from Germany’s mental strength training app for athletes to Italy’s sustainable vehicle battery designed to revolutionize the transport sector. As the Red Bull Basement World Champion, Gamayon is set to embark on an all-expenses-paid trip to Silicon Valley in California, USA, for a three-week program of networking and mentorship with tech and VC leaders.

Over 110,000 entries were submitted across the world for Red Bull Basement 2024. The national winners flew to Tokyo for the Red Bull Basement World Final for the exclusive opportunity to represent their countries at the competition. The Red Bull Basement World Final featured intensive workshops, AI training, and networking opportunities with international entrepreneurs, innovators, coaches, and business leaders. This included Red Bull esports professional and founder of several businesses Amar Al Naimi, and Microsoft Corporate vice president for data, AI, and digital applications Jessica Hawk, and many more.

Next-Gen Toyota Tamaraw offers limitless possibilities to meet Filipino commercial vehicle requirements

    0

An iconic nameplate known by generations of Filipinos, the Toyota Tamaraw is synonymous with reliability and durability due to its quality and versatile build. In response to the ever-evolving needs of the Philippine market, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has introduced the Next Generation Tamaraw, reimagined for the modern era as a multi-purpose people and goods mover both for business and personal use. It is manufactured locally at the TMP plant in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

The Next Generation Tamaraw: Built for the New Era

The Next Generation Tamaraw is a true testament to Toyota’s commitment to people empowerment and nation-building by delivering innovations while staying true to its roots. It is built on Toyota’s global IMV platform, retaining the same DNA as the Tamaraw that plied Philippine roads in the 1990s and early 2000s. As the Philippine market continued to evolve, so did the needs of various enterprises and individuals, leading to the development of the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw.

    TMP President Masando Hashimoto

“We sat down and communicated with potential customers to ask what they look for in the Tamaraw. Hearing their comments and requests face-to-face regarding our vehicles inspired and reminded me and our team to make ever-better cars,” shared TMP President Masando Hashimoto during the grand launch.

Available in diesel and gas variants, the Next Generation Tamaraw offers multiple body styles for different passenger and cargo requirements. The diesel variants are powered by a fuel-efficient 2.4L 2GD-FTV engine tailored for heavy-duty tasks, while the gas variants are equipped with a reliable 2.0L 1TR-FE engine.

2.4 Utility Van DSL M/T LWB variant

During the grand launch, various configurations of the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw’s original equipment variants were introduced, including the long wheelbase (LWB) Dropside and LWB Utility Van, which will be available for retail in January 2025; and the LWB Aluminum Cargo, which will have its commercial release in March. These variants were shown to address diverse uses, highlighting their customizability.

Retail sales for the short wheelbase (SWB) variants of the Utility Van, Dropside, and Aluminum Cargo will start later.

    Tamaraw Camper RV

The soon-to-arrive Ambulance, Patrol Van, and Refrigerator Van were also exhibited, showing the Next Generation Tamaraw’s versatility. Other special conversions soon to be available for order, such as the Food Truck, Mobile Service Vehicle, and Camper RV, were also showcased, displaying the conversion capabilities of TMP in partnership with Toyota Mobility Solutions Philippines (TMSPH).

“The possibilities for this vehicle are truly endless. These possibilities, which will have a lasting effect on the lives of Filipinos now and in the future, is what we envision in our tagline, Abante, Posible,” added Hashimoto.

TMP First VP for Vehicle Sales Operations Danny Cruz

TMP First Vice President for Vehicles Sales Operations Danny Cruz shared during the marketing presentation, “As explained by Chief Engineer Jira, the Next Generation Tamaraw transforms to the body style best suited for your needs. It can convert into anything we can imagine. We made sure we truly knew our customers by going to small and medium business owners all over the country to understand their mobility challenges.”

In-house conversions such as the Utility Van, Dropside, and Aluminum Cargo offer features that cater to customers’ everyday commercial or even personal needs.

The Utility Van’s spacious interior, which can be maximized by folding the seats, makes it perfect for transporting goods or people comfortably. It also has a built-in rear A/C.

The Dropside‘s large deck space, high panel height, and three-side panel access allows easy loading and unloading of various goods.

The Aluminum Cargo is designed to carry both dry and wet goods with its aluminum interior and exterior panels, ensuring durability and reliability in all conditions.

Competitive Pricing for the Practical Pinoy

The Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw starts at PHP937,000 for the 2.4 Dropside DSL M/T LWB variant. TMP Chairman Alfred V. Ty disclosed during the Tamaraw Roll-off Ceremony on November 28 that TMP will later offer a gas-powered SWB variant that will start below PHP800,000.

The top-of-the-line 2.4 GL Dropside DSL A/T LWB variant, meanwhile, is available at PHP1,075,000. It has a maximum output of 150/3,400ps/rpm and a max torque of 400/1,600-2,000Nm/rpm. It also comes with safety features such as driver and passenger airbags, Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD).

The 2.4 Aluminum Cargo DSL M/T LWB and 2.4 Utility Van DSL M/T LWB are priced at PHP1,041,000 and PHP1,142,000, respectively.

Simple and Easy Ownership and Usership Experience

TMP also worked closely with Toyota Financial Services Philippines to make the customer acquisition experience for the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw easy with multiple options, such as low downpayment and flexible payment schemes, including weekly payments.

Through TMP’s various insurance partners, customers can expect a simple and customizable insurance policy tailored to their needs.

Maintenance will also be easy with a fixed service discount voucher of PHP 1,200 for every periodic maintenance service (PMS) until the 40,000km check-up.

In addition to special conversions, TMSPH offers additional solutions, such as the On-Demand Shuttle System, Logistics Matching Service, and more, to cater to different business needs.

    Total Package for the Tamaraw

With affordable prices paired with after-sales, value chain, and mobility solutions services, TMP provides a complete package for the Tamaraw. “We want to cover every customer journey touchpoint, from purchase to conversion and all the way to maintenance. With this total package, we aim to make the customer experience hassle-free so our customers can focus on advancing toward their dreams,” Cruz added.

The Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw falls under the commercial vehicle segment, which accounts for 73.64 percent of the market share, according to the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI)’s 2024 Q3 report. This segment includes vehicles used by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), local government units (LGUs), logistics facilities, and many more.

    0

Isuzu Motors Limited Japan (IML), in partnership with TESDA and World Vision, celebrated the graduation of Batch 22 scholars from the Isuzu Heart and Smile Project (IHSP) at the Isuzu-TESDA Auto Mechanic Training Center. The 18 graduates successfully completed the rigorous two-year Automotive Servicing Course, achieving the NC IV certification, the highest qualification for the program.

Empowering Through Education and Skills Development

Since its establishment in 2008, the Isuzu Heart and Smile Project has exemplified Isuzu’s belief in education as a transformative force. Made possible through the strong support of Isuzu Motors Limited Japan, TESDA, and World Vision, this initiative reflects a shared commitment to uplifting underprivileged youth by equipping them with automotive servicing skills giving them opportunity for a promising career in aftersales service.

To date, IHSP has graduated 421 scholars, with remarkable success in employment. Around 66% are locally employed in different service shops, 26% are working overseas, 4% have established their own businesses, and another4% have pursued further studies or careers in other fields. Those working overseas are now making an impact in top global markets such as Australia (26%), Japan (19%), Saudi Arabia (18%), the UAE (16%), and Qatar (75), while the remaining 13% are working across other countries in Asia, America, and the Middle East.

“This project has pushed us to take a leap of faith. Before joining the school, many of us didn’t have the means to pursue higher education. Thanks to the generous investment of our project partners—IML, World Vision, and TESDA—we now have the skills and opportunities to achieve our dreams,” said Edmar Garcia, Batch 22 Valedictorian.

    A Continued Commitment to Excellence

Centralized ride-hailing and taxi hub now fully operational at NAIA T3; Grab first to launch

    0

New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the private operator of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), has officially opened a centralized hub for ride-hailing services and metered taxis operated by JoyRide at Terminal 3 — NAIA’s busiest terminal.

The transport network vehicle service (TNVS) hub had a soft launch on Dec. 5, 2024, and became fully operational as of Dec. 8, 2024, just in time for the peak Christmas travel season.

Grab Philippines, the country’s leading ride-hailing platform, was the first operator to transition to the facility, providing services even during the soft launch.

This new facility is designed to reduce curbside congestion, improve traffic flow, and enhance the passenger experience. Located within the multi-level parking building at Terminal 3, the 6,000sqm hub features 401 parking slots, 18 loading bays, and dedicated lanes for TNVs, along with multiple entry and exit points to ensure seamless traffic management.

    NAIA

“With a centralized hub and diverse transportation options, we are bringing more order and efficiency to the airport. This is part of our commitment to making travel smoother and stress-free for every passenger,” said NNIC general manager Lito Alvarez.

Grab Philippines began its full-scale operations at the hub on December 8, setting the stage for other operators to follow. “We commend the NNIC for their vision to create a better and more efficient airport experience for passengers. As the nation’s leading ride-hailing platform, Grab is proud to be the first to transition to this centralized station, setting the standard for all TNVS operators. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with NNIC to ensure a smooth transition for our passengers and driver-partners and to enhance the overall airport experience for all travelers,” said Grab Philippines country head Ronald Roda.

He added, “This initiative is a game-changer not just for Grab drivers but for all ride-hailing drivers operating at NAIA Terminal 3. As a platform that represents and supports the livelihood of TNVS drivers across the country, Grab is proud to lead this effort alongside NNIC to elevate the experience for both passengers and drivers.”

JoyRide, starting operations on December 10, will bring its app-based rides and Super Taxi fleet to the hub. “Our partnership with NNIC ensures passengers have access to both app-based rides and our dedicated Super Taxi fleet, making reliable transport available for everyone,” said Noli Eala, Joyride SVP for Corporate Affairs.

Angkas, through its four-wheeled ride service Angcars, will also join the facility, offering another seamless option for airport passengers. “Our collaboration with NNIC ensures that Angcars provides a seamless, safe, and reliable option for passengers. This initiative is a win for travelers, drivers, and airport efficiency alike,” said Angkas CEO George Royeca.

All three operators have committed to deploying dedicated airport pickup drivers to ensure faster and more efficient service during the busy holiday season. Rates will remain comparable to coupon taxis, maintaining affordability while offering the added convenience of app-based services.

    NAIA

Passengers without ride-hailing apps can also make on-the-spot bookings at dedicated lounges for Grab, JoyRide, and Angcars, located adjacent to the car park. Grab’s lounge, for example, provides a streamlined process for immediate bookings, ensuring accessibility for all travelers.

This centralized hub is part of NNIC’s broader efforts to modernize and rehabilitate NAIA, addressing long-standing issues such as overcapacity and outdated infrastructure. By collaborating with industry leaders like Grab, JoyRide, and Angkas, NNIC aims to deliver a world-class airport experience that matches the needs of today’s travelers.
