PNP guarantees 911 quick response, shares holiday safety tips

PNP first responders now make it to the scene of the emergency within five minutes, thanks to its new 911 system that is powered by the same technology used in the United States and Europe.

The Office of Communications and Electronics Services (CES) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) shared safety and survival tips for citizens during this hectic season of short and long trips, and merrymaking.

CES Director Police Brigadier General Warren Gaspar Tolito reminded citizens of the increased possibility of accidents and emergencies during the holidays, citing increased traffic, electrical overload, improper use of fireworks, and overindulgence in food and drinks as possible triggers for vehicular and medical emergencies.

    911

General Tolito shared the good news that the PNP can now better and more quickly respond to emergency calls in Metro Manila and provincial areas because of its enhanced E911 capabilities.

The 911 Call Handling System from the United States lets the PNP respond to distress calls and provide emergency response at unprecedented speed with accurate pinpointing of location. PNP first responders are able to provide solutions and assistance within five minutes or less, depending on location.

    911

Citizens must remember only one number to dial — 911 — on their cellphones or landlines, then Press 1. They will immediately be connected to the PNP who will be able to determine their exact location and deploy first responders within seconds. They will reach the scene within the prescribed 3-5 minute limit.

General Tolito advises everyone to keep calm and try to be as rational as possible. “Tell the person who answers what’s wrong, then share your name and location. The call handling technology will already be able to catch the contact details and pinpoint the exact location,” General Tolito said.

Other information like specific areas of the building or property, the number of people affected or access to the property will be helpful as well.

    911

“If reporting a crime in progress, try to observe and gather as many details as possible: number of suspects involved, clothes worn, gender, hair cut or length of hair. If a vehicle is involved, make and color or license plates, if visible, will be very helpful,” he added.

“The holiday season is a merry and busy season but it is a challenging time for emergency call takers and responders. This is the time when accidents from drunk driving usually occur, fires break out due to neglected appliances or Christmas lights, and people suffer medical emergencies due to overindulgence or fireworks. Thefts and break-ins also happen, especially when the property is unoccupied,” Gen. Tolito said.

The most common cases that the PNP responds to are vehicular accidents, public disturbances, domestic violence, robbery, and theft.

He advises residents to lock and secure their homes and vehicles before leaving, keep lights on at night or even during the day to deter robbers, and exercise caution when answering the door.

    911

“At the first sign of trouble, call 911, then press 1,” the General advised. “We answer almost all of our calls within 1-minute and will be ready to respond and ensure that your holidays are safe and enjoyable.”

The PNP’s quick-response operations are a direct result of the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) Revitalized Emergency 911 initiative, its CORE system powered by NGA 911 LLC, a leading 911 service provider of Next Gen Technology of the United States, General Tolito shared.

Mitsubishi Motors PH holds medical mission for Santa Rosa community

Mitsubishi Philippines Corporation (MMPC), in partnership with its healthcare provider, SSMC Group of Hospitals and Clinics, recently conducted a medical mission in one of the underprivileged communities in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

The community is situated in Sitio Hemedez, Brgy. Malitlit, Santa Rosa, Laguna, consists of approximately 180 families or around 738 individuals and faces pressing challenges in accessing essential healthcare and medical services. The majority of the residents are industrial workers, laborers, and families employed in nearby factories, who also have economic constraints that limit their ability to afford proper healthcare.

MMPC’s medical mission aims to address some of these concerns by providing basic laboratory services, medical and dental consultations, and distribution of medicines, hygiene kits, and food packs that would help improve the health and living conditions of the people in the community.

Several volunteers from MMPC and SSMC assisted the free medical mission. MMPC team was led by Marfel Ancheta, Vice President for Safety, Health & Environment Department, and Cristine Jumamoy, Senior Manager for General Affairs Department.

“Staying true to our tagline “Life Made Better”, MMPC remains dedicated in helping uplift the communities that face significant challenges. We continue to partner with local government and organizations for us to properly execute these kinds of efforts. This medical mission not only underscored MMPC’s dedication to corporate social responsibility, but also highlighted the importance of community collaboration in creating lasting positive change,” said Ancheta.

No toll fees on SMC expressways on eve of Christmas and New Year

In the spirit of the Yuletide season, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), through SMC Infrastructure, is continuing its annual tradition of waiving the toll fees at expressways it operates on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve to make holiday travel smoother for motorists.

Toll fees across SMC expressways — including the Skyway System, NAIA Expressway (NAIAX), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), STAR Tollway, and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX) — will be waived from 10:00 PM on December 24 to 6:00 AM on December 25, and again from 10:00 PM on December 31 to 6:00 AM on January 1, 2025.

“This is our way of saying thank you to everyone who uses the expressways we operate. It’s something we look forward to every year because it helps thousands of motorists get home to their families a little easier, especially during Christmas and New Year,” SMC chairman Ramon S. Ang said.

Ang said it has also laid out operational initiatives to ensure the safety and security of motorists along its SMC expressways tollway network.

Starting 12 noon on December 20, patrollers and security personnel are to be deployed in critical areas, while emergency response personnel will be placed on alert.

Traffic monitoring centers at each of the expressways will be staffed round-the-clock to keep watch over the flow of vehicle traffic.

Roadworks that may affect traffic flow will be suspended, starting noon on December 20, up to January 3, 2025, to free up space along the SMC expressways.

Tow trucks and other emergency vehicles are also being pre-positioned at strategic areas to be able to respond to incidents quickly.

Meanwhile, SMC Infrastructure has stepped up its coordination with the traffic management offices of local government units to minimize traffic bottlenecks in their jurisdictions.

Congestion at local roads usually contributes to traffic flow at expressway exits, which in turn triggers vehicular congestion at the carriageways.

“We appeal to our motorists for patience as we anticipate heavy traffic around Metro Manila, which may affect their travel plans or scheduled flights. We advise them to plan their trips ahead and allot more time for travel to make sure they arrive at their destinations on time,” the company said.

The SMC expressways operator reminded motorists to ensure they have enough load in their Autosweep RFID accounts, to prevent delays at exits.

Motorists are also asked to avoid tailgating at toll plazas so that RFID scanners can read their tags properly.

For those who have not yet registered, the company encourages motorists to sign up for Autosweep RFID, which is free of charge. Loading Autosweep RFID accounts is quick and convenient through electronic payment systems, online banking, e-wallets, or by visiting Autosweep customer service centers and kiosks located across the expressway network.

Additionally, SMC Infrastructure advises motorists to check their vehicles before traveling to ensure they are roadworthy and avoid potential incidents while on the SMC expressways.

For road emergencies, motorists can contact the following hotlines for assistance:

    • Skyway System and NAIAx (02-53188655 or 0917-5398762);
    • SLEX (049-5087539 or 0917-6877539);
    • STAR Tollway (043-7567870 or 0917-5117827);
    • TPLEX (0917-8880715)

First Eduspec Champions STEAM Education for Filipino Learners

First Eduspec Inc. (FEI) is at the forefront of advancing STEAM education in the Philippines, addressing the urgent challenges highlighted by the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). With Filipino students ranking 77th out of 81 countries, there is a critical need to improve performance in math, science, and technology to prepare learners for a competitive, tech-driven future.

Through its STEAM-STRONG initiative, First Eduspec Inc. offers innovative educational solutions, including STEAM curricula, advanced tools, authentic assessments, and teacher training programs. These initiatives are designed to fully unlock the potential of Filipino learners and equip them for the demands of the 21st century.

    First Eduspec

    Strengthening Education Through STEAM

The program featured keynotes from experts, including FEI General Manager Willard Paras and Dr. Alfons Jayson Pelgone of the Philippine Normal University.

“At FEI, our mission is to deliver relevant, needs-driven, and evidence-based STEAM learning solutions that address the evolving needs of education,” Paras emphasized. He outlined the four pillars of FEI’s STEAM-STRONG programs:

    • 1. STEAM Curriculum: Fostering 21st-century skills.
    • 2. Authentic Assessments: Enabling evidence-based teaching and skill evaluation.
    • 3. Educational Technology: Familiarizing students and teachers with tools for the future workplace.

    A National Call to Action

Rex Education CEO Don Timothy Buhain highlighted the Philippines’ low PISA ranking as a challenge that requires immediate action. “How are we teaching STEAM? The financing package, led by ADB as the mandated lead arranger, bookrunner, and structuring bank, includes USD50-million from ADB, USD50-million from HSBC through the HSBC ASEAN Growth Fund, and USD15-million from Security Bank Corporation. HSBC participated as a joint mandated arranger and bookrunner, while Security Bank Capital Investment Corporation acted as the mandated lead arranger. Paulton & Company served as the exclusive financial advisor to Asialink for the transaction.

This initiative is expected to increase Asialink’s total loans to SMEs from PHP8.8-billion (approximately USD150-million) to PHP13-billion, with over half of the financing dedicated to women-owned or women-led SMEs. Asialink aims to double its female entrepreneur borrowers to at least 20,000 and introduce tailored loan products for women business owners.

“Nonbank financial institutions play a key role in providing services to unbanked SMEs. This partnership between ADB and Asialink will enhance SMEs’ access to finance, especially for women entrepreneurs who face greater challenges in obtaining capital,” said Suzanne Gaboury, ADB Director General for Private Sector Operations. “This project underscores ADB’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion and supporting the growth of SMEs, which are critical drivers of the Philippine economy.”

Addressing the Financing Gap for Women Entrepreneurs

The financing gap for SMEs in the Philippines is estimated at around PHP67-billion to PHP180-billion. Surveys reveal a significant disparity in financial inclusion: 50% of SMEs owned by men transact using bank accounts compared to only 24% of women. Furthermore, only 4% of women-led SMEs have received bank loan approvals, compared to 14% of male-owned SMEs.

“This partnership with ADB marks a transformative milestone in Asialink’s mission to empower SMEs across the Philippines, especially women-led businesses that remain underrepresented in the financial sector. Through this collaboration, we aim to expand nationwide, digitize and innovate loan processes, and ensure entrepreneurs have access to reliable financial solutions,” said Robert B. Jordan Jr., CEO of Asialink Finance Corporation.

    Supporting SME Growth and Innovation

Established in 1997, Asialink has become a leading nonbank financial institution in the Philippines, with 247 branches nationwide. SMEs account for more than half of its portfolio, with secure lending provided through motor vehicles as collateral. Earlier this year, Asialink received a PHP4-billion strategic investment from Creador, a regional private equity investor supporting best-in-class financial services companies. The ADB financing package will further accelerate Asialink’s growth and innovation efforts.

ADB remains dedicated to creating a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific, continuing its mission to eradicate extreme poverty. Established in 1966, ADB is owned by 69 members, with 49 from the region.

Toyota Motor PH supports ‘Start Your Impossible’ National Coastal Cleanup and Mangrove Planting Day

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP), in collaboration with Paralympic swimmer Ernie Gawilan successfully concluded the “Start Your Impossible” National Coastal Cleanup and Mangrove Planting Day, held last December 14, 2024. The event, held in 33 locations across the Philippines, aimed to inspire communities to protect marine ecosystems and tackle coastal pollution, supporting Gawilan’s social commitment as a Global Team Toyota Athlete (GTTA).

The event, which brought together 1,302 volunteers from Toyota Motor Philippines, and the Toyota dealer network—and guided by the local government unit and environment offices—highlighted the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem and combating the pressing issue of coastal pollution.

The group of volunteers collected 789 bags of plastic waste and debris. Alongside the cleanup efforts, 10,354 mangrove seedlings were planted, further contributing to the restoration of critical mangrove forests in various coastal communities.

For Gawilan, championing cleaner waters and driving environmental awareness have become central to his mission of creating meaningful change beyond sports.
