Smart laptops are going to be everywhere

Strolling through gadget stores and spotting AI-powered laptops, you might wonder, “What’s the purpose of this?” Well, there’s a reason more brands are jumping on the AI bandwagon and making it a standout feature in their latest laptops. Stick around—I’m about to reveal why it’s worth considering. This might just convince you to grab one and stay ahead of the curve as AI computing takes a leap next year.

What makes AI-Powered laptops so useful?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the tech landscape, making everything faster, smoother, more organized, and visually stunning. That’s all thanks to the built-in AI components powering these cutting-edge laptops. If you’ve read our reviews of ASUS and Lenovo laptops, you’ve probably seen us talk about the GPU and NPU driving the AI performance. If not (seriously, you’re missing out), let me break it down for you.

The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) specializes in handling massive, parallel computations—perfect for tasks like image processing, data visualization, and accelerating machine learning models. Meanwhile, the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is purpose-built for AI-specific tasks like neural network processing and real-time decision-making. Together, they create a powerful duo: the GPU handles large-scale, high-volume processing, while the NPU focuses on precision AI workloads.

But what about the CPU (Central Processing Unit)? While it’s not the star of the AI show, it’s still a key player. The CPU manages system operations, ensuring the smooth execution of AI-driven processes, handling general computing tasks, and maintaining overall system efficiency. So, while the heavy AI lifting is done by the GPU and NPU, the CPU keeps the entire system running like clockwork.

Why Microsoft is the perfect partner for AI laptops

Of course, having AI-driven components is only half the story. You need the right software to unlock their full potential. That’s where Microsoft comes in, perfectly aligned with this powerhouse hardware. It’s like adding salt to a dish—without it, you’d never taste the full flavor of AI capabilities.

For instance, imagine you’re working on a school project and need a photo of your invention. The background, however, is a disaster. Normally, you’d have to wrestle with Photoshop or hunt down a free background remover online. But with an AI-powered laptop, you can simply use Microsoft Designer in the Images app to fix it in a flash.

And here’s another game-changer: the latest AI-powered laptops come with a dedicated Copilot+ key. Just press it, and voilà—you’ve got instant access to Microsoft’s AI assistant. It’s seamlessly integrated into Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. This means you can get help writing, summarizing, analyzing data, coding, or even scheduling meetings, making work and study so much easier and more time-efficient.

    AI-Powered Security: Smarter, Safer

Worried about security? Don’t be. Microsoft and Intel have taken care of that, too. Intel’s Threat Detection Technology (TDT) uses AI to detect potential threats in real-time, while hardware-based security features protect against vulnerabilities at a deeper level. On the software side, Microsoft Defender offers real-time protection against malware and other threats. And with tools like Microsoft Security Copilot, even analyzing and responding to security incidents becomes faster and more effective.

These AI-powered security features create a dynamic defense system that evolves with emerging threats, keeping your data safe. It’s peace of mind, knowing that your laptop isn’t just smart—it’s actively working to protect you.

Why now is the time to go AI

Few things are more frustrating than hitting a mental block or losing momentum in the middle of a task. That’s where AI-powered laptops shine. With intelligent features and adaptive processing, these devices optimize your workflow, provide seamless multitasking, and keep you focused on what matters.

This is why more tech brands are rolling out AI-powered laptops—they understand the demand for smarter, more intuitive devices. These laptops optimize battery life, automate routine tasks, and deliver faster speeds and better graphics, all tailored to make your life easier.

The future is bright for AI laptops

Here’s the exciting part: we’re only scratching the surface of what AI-powered laptops can do. As AI technology evolves, these devices will become even more impressive. They’ll continue to revolutionize how we work, learn, and create, making every task easier, more intuitive, and a lot more fun. Before long, having an AI-powered laptop will feel as essential as having Wi-Fi.

So, the next time you see one of these laptops in a store, don’t just walk past it. Consider the possibilities. Investing in an AI-powered laptop isn’t just buying a device—it’s embracing the future.

New year, new beginnings: Making your future brighter this 2025

The New Year is always full of promise — a blank slate to create new goals, embrace positive changes, and nurture what matters most. While we often think about career or financial targets during this time, it is equally important to focus on overall wellness and the ways we can protect and care for our loved ones.

As you step into 2025, consider these ideas to ensure a balanced and fulfilling year ahead:

    1. Prioritize your family’s future and wellness

A happy family begins with a healthy one. This year, focus on strengthening bonds and creating opportunities for connection, whether it is sharing family meals, scheduling time to unplug from technology, or exploring new outdoor activities together.

    2. Align financial and health goals

While setting financial goals for the year, do not forget to align them with what truly matters. Saving for a dream vacation, enrolling in family fitness programs, or improving your diet are worthwhile investments into wellness and shared experiences. These are just as vital as balancing the budget or paying off debts, and they contribute to both your personal and financial well-being.

    3. Find the balance between growth and rest

The New Year often comes with the pressure to hustle harder and achieve more, but real growth happens when we make time to rest, reflect, and recharge. Balance is the key to wellness. This year, commit to setting boundaries—whether it’s making time for self-care or ensuring weekends are dedicated to family rather than chores. Taking care of yourself equips you to better care for those you love.

    4. Focus on building a meaningful legacy

Wellness is not just about living well today – it’s about creating a life of meaning that lasts for generations. Financial security plays a vital role in this. Protecting your wealth nurtures opportunities for your children and their future. Whether it’s funding their education, helping them pursue their dreams, or teaching them the value of financial responsibility, these are gifts that go beyond material wealth to shape a brighter legacy.

    5. Celebrate small wins and big moments

In the rush to meet goals, don’t forget to pause and celebrate. Every step forward—no matter how small—is a reason to be proud. Whether it’s learning something new, enjoying quality time with loved ones, or simply completing a task you have been putting off, these moments add up to a meaningful year.

    Remember the Y2K Bug?

I have been with Gadgets for about half of its existence—a long time in terms of technological advances. Since then, smartphones and other gadgets have only gotten better. There were moments of uncertainty in the technology world and one of them just happened to be one that I bore witness to—the Y2K bug. Why was it such a big deal, and what came out of it?

Most reports centered around the Y2K bug came about because computers read dates as two digits—for example, January 1, 1999, read as 1/1/99, and thus the clock turning over to January 1, 2000, would cause confusion as computers would read it as not January 1, 2000, but rather, January 1, 1900, or 1/1/00. The reason dates only read two digits instead of four is because mainframe computers and personal computing memory were expensive. Some reports priced memory at USD10/KB to over USD100/KB in 1975 (USD59.10-USD591.03 in 2024 dollars), and in attempts to lower the prices and make them accessible to everyone, many manufacturers chose to use two digits for the date instead of four. The assumption for this was to expand the use of computers at the cost of allegedly rendering them useless by the year 2000.

The earliest reports of the Y2K bug began as far back as 1958, when Bob Bemer noticed that this would be an issue when he was working with genealogical software. He attempted to bring this issue up with various stakeholders ranging from fellow programmers to IBM to the United States federal government and even international organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization for 20 years, recommending the COBOL picture clause should be used to specify four-digit years for dates.

The first time that this issue was addressed online was as early as 1985 on a Usenet newsgroup. Spencer Bolles said, “I have a friend that raised an interesting question that I immediately tried to prove wrong. He is a programmer and has this notion that when we reach the year 2000, computers will not accept the new date. Will the computers assume that it is 1900, or will it even cause a problem?” His questions began to gain traction in the 1990s, when Computerworld ran an article by Peter de Jager about “Doomsday 2000,” and other programmers, such as David Eddy, coined the term Y2K in 1995.

The problem even gained the attention of the United States Department of Defense. “The Y2K problem is the electronic equivalent of the El Nino and there will be nasty surprises around the globe,” said former United States Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre. The brokerage industry made moves to address this in the 1980s, namely because bonds had maturity dates beyond the year 2000. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) hired 100 programmers to address these issues, spending USD20 million on the Y2K issue.

Date programming had to be changed as well; credit card systems saw bugs as early as 1997, with processing issues happening with cards that had expiration dates beyond the year 2000, and a lawsuit was even filed over this issue. Microsoft Excel, the C programming language, JavaScript, UNIX, and the Windows 3.x file manager had to make adjustments, not to mention a slew of other programs, applications, and more. Some solutions, such as date expansion to four digits, date windowing, date compression, and more, were also proposed for legacy systems.

What happened on January 1, 2000, itself? Anything that used a computer was affected, but the extent varied. Reports from various countries included minor glitches such as deleting new text messages to nuclear plant radiation monitoring systems failing in Japan, a video store incorrectly assessing a USD92,150 late fee due to a tape being 100 years overdue in the United States, 30,000 cash registers printing receipts with 1900 dates in Greece, and more. It is estimated that the cost of the work done to prepare for Y2K was more than USD300 billion, although the final cost may be unknown due to the variation of errors and the severity of such errors. A recent software failure by CrowdStrike in 2024 also brought down computers worldwide and was also compared to the Y2K bug.

After January 1, 2000, came and went with much fanfare and (relatively) little effect on technology, people got back to their lives with ever-increasing importance on gadgets and technology. While there are many issues that technology still has to address to this very day, people are now more proactive than ever with events similar to Y2K. In fact, I myself learned about issues involving the years 2010 and 2022, which went virtually unnoticed compared to Y2K. While we continue to rely on technology, we have to be proactive about solving issues created by technology as well, and the Y2K bug was one of the examples where prevention helped, even though the impact was not as big as people expected it to be.

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) partnered with Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) for Dream Green, a tree-growing project where the brand aims to plant 5,000 mangroves in Brgy. Lumaniag, Lian, Batangas by the end of 2024. This is in line with Hyundai’s global vision, Progress for Humanity, which drives the brand to create meaningful change, not just through its vehicle line-up but also through initiatives that enrich lives and sustain the environment.

Last November 29, HMPH employees together with RAFI and Samahan ng mga Mandaragat sa Sulok (SAMLOK) worked together to plant the first batch of mangroves. Dream Green is a local initiative of Hyundai Motor Company’s global campaign where Hyundai subsidiaries from around the globe plant trees named under the IONIQ Forest, coined from the IONIQ brand, which represents Hyundai’s dedication to building a better world through a cleaner and more sustainable lifestyle.

Present at the Dream Green activity were HMPH executives Mr. Jiho Son, president; Mr. Cecil Capacete, managing director; and Mr. Hongshik Chin, chief financial officer. 96 Teams Begin Their PLDT-Smart InnoGen 4 Journey for PWD Empowerment

For the fourth season of  Innovation Generation 4.0 (InnoGen 4), PLDT and Smart welcomed 96 teams from 17 senior high schools and 79 colleges and universities nationwide. Launched with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA), this year’s theme, “Innovation for All,” emphasizes empowering persons with disabilities (PWDs) through technological solutions.

“The real journey has begun for our youth innovators to work on their proposed technological solutions that will help persons with disabilities navigate their daily activities. This season, we are also looking for innovations that will assist government agencies in making transactions more inclusive and sensitive to persons with disabilities,” said Stephanie V. Orlino, AVP and head of stakeholder management at PLDT and Smart.

    The Journey of Youth Innovation

The first stage or the Kilo Phase saw the entry of 388 tech-savvy youth that make up 96 teams from 17 senior high schools and 79 colleges and universities all over the Philippines into the program.

They are taking part in a series of lectures on Concept Development that include Design Thinking and Ideation, Basic Validation, and Writing and Designing proposals. At the end of this stage, the teams are required to submit a concept paper. Only the Top 50 teams will advance to the next round or the Mega 50.

The ultimate goal for young innovators is to qualify for the final phase or the Giga 25. At this stage, lecturing and mentoring sessions will zero in on Basic Prototyping, Integrated Payment Platforms, Data Privacy, and Idea Pitching. It’s where teams will finally see their concept develop into a minimum viable product which they will present on Demo Day. Throughout their journey, they may receive as much as PHP90,000 in cash and communications support to help turn their idea into reality.

    Expanding Innovation Opportunities

InnoGen 4.0 highlights key milestones in the PLDT Group’s innovation and grant program for young Filipinos. For this season, PLDT and Smart also opened the initiative to out-of-school youth in adopted communities of colleges and universities.

InnoGen provides more than just financial and connectivity grants. It offers a rich learning environment through lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions, fostering knowledge sharing and technological skill development.

InnoGen 4.0 underscores PLDT and Smart’s commitment to meaningful innovation and underscores the PLDT Group’s assistance to the country’s achievement of the UNSDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities.

AI, 5G revolutionizing evolving media landscape

The future of marketing and advertising not only in the Philippines but across the world will be shaped by the increasing importance of artificial intelligence and improvements in mobile connectivity, such as 5G, among other technological trends.

“The media landscape dramatically evolves every second, and we don’t even realize it,” said Kristine A. Go, senior vice president for Wireless Consumer Business at Smart Communications, Inc., speaking before an audience of advertising, marketing, and media professionals at MMA Impact Philippines.

Her keynote session, “Shifting Paradigms: The Future of Media, Marketing, and Advertising in the Philippines,” underscored the transformation brought about by the rapid rise of digital media, a shift accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With digital becoming mainstream, describing the media reality as “fast-paced” is an understatement,” said Go, identifying five “key provocations” impacting this changing media landscape:

    • Digital as the new reality
    • Every person as a marketing channel
    • The challenges and opportunities of living in a siloed digital world
    • Personal data being the ‘new gold’
    • Scratching the tip of the AI iceberg

Go attributed the country’s rapid digitalization to the onslaught of the pandemic. “Smartphones became dominant, leading to the explosion of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. Streaming platforms gave rise to video on-demand and the content creator universe. In fact, the Philippines is #1 in online video consumption,” she said.

In mobile-first Philippines, where people spend about a third of their days on their smartphones, video streaming is a major activity, alongside social media and gaming. Go says this is due to smartphone affordability and improvements in mobile connectivity. “With LTE evolving into 5G, people are now able to game and stream anywhere uninterrupted. More importantly, with everyone having access to content creation, the latest evolution of this habit has been to livestream outdoors, which 5G allows you to do,” she said, adding that mobile connectivity has also enabled ‘regular joes’ and key opinion leaders to influence other consumers via social media.

“What powers all of these is 5G, as it offers several solutions to the challenges of modern advertising, primarily by enhancing existing formats and enabling entirely new possibilities, like precision targeting, personalization, interactive video ads, augmented reality and virtual reality environments,” she said. To date, Smart’s 4G and 5G mobile network covers 97% of the population.

    ‘Fearless prediction’

In addition to 5G, the mainstreaming of AI is likewise seen to revolutionize not just the marketing and advertising landscape, but other fields such as education as well. “The Philippines is among the top countries in the world in terms of interest in AI,” said Go, citing data from Google. “My fearless prediction is that AI will become mainstream faster than we think. In the Philippines, the Department of Education is teaming up with Khan Academy to digitize classrooms and educational content. Part of that project is the AI assistant, khanmigo, which creates lesson plans for teachers, and tutors students on any subject,” she added.

However, with opportunities come challenges, as the increasingly digital world has also given rise to siloes. “The proliferation of content and on-demand viewing has created millions of options, which makes individuals live in their own, not-so-little digital world. Brands need to be mindful on their presence where they are applicable or relevant, and create content befitting the media channel they have chosen,” Go said.

Go also cited personal data as the ‘new gold’ and is key to unlocking curated experiences. “With the growing desire for uniqueness and convenience, which are driving the demand and rising expectations for personalized online experiences, personal data is key to delivering what customers want,” she said, adding that while many are susceptible to personalized ads, consumers remain contradictory on this matter. “While they seek out curated experiences, they don’t want to offer their personal data and they prefer to be anonymous online.”

PLDT and Smart’s participation in industry events like the MMA Impact Philippines is part of the group’s broader goal of demonstrating leadership in innovation and contributing to nation-building by driving technological advancements, fostering meaningful connections to empower communities, and bringing the benefits of the internet closer to more Filipinos across the country.

Adjust: Key mobile marketing trends to watch in APAC for 2025

Advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have reshaped how brands capture attention, drive engagement and build customer loyalty. Mobile apps, particularly in the e-commerce and gaming verticals, have emerged as crucial growth drivers, with the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region amounting to 48% of global organic gaming app installs. Industry experts from Adjust, a leading measurement and analytics company, predict that the momentum will continue in 2025, with AI- and ML-powered mobile measurement solutions maturing and scaling to new heights.

At the same time, alternative app distribution channels will gain traction and privacy regulations will be tighter than ever. Marketers adjust their strategies to these technological advancements, regulatory changes and consumer behaviors to succeed in 2025 and beyond.

AI and ML will redefine how marketers connect with audiences

AI and ML are expected to mature further in 2025, enabling marketers to deliver enhanced user experiences, improved functionality and stronger security features. Andrey Kazakov, chief executive officer of Adjust, said: “2024 was about proving the potential of these models; 2025 will be about scaling them. Developers and marketers will start to trust and leverage these models at a much higher level, achieving better precision and returns on their investment.”

While 2024 saw Generative AI (GenAI) revolutionize creativity and engagement, its role in 2025 will need to evolve. Egor Lukomsky, chief technology officer at Adjust, explained that marketers must move beyond GenAI to address critical performance challenges. “By adopting ML models that use alternative data points to share insights about user engagement and conversion, brands can effectively understand and predict user behavior in privacy-compliant ways,” he said.

The Rise of Alternative Apps Will Open New Revenue Streams, Especially in Asia

In APAC, consumers are becoming increasingly receptive to alternative purchasing channels, especially as direct-to-consumer (D2C) investments grow in popular platforms like super apps. With more consumers willing to explore new app experiences, especially from major e-commerce platforms, the region is poised for rapid innovation.

Kazakov mentions, “These new channels will allow brands to bypass traditional app stores, opening up fresh opportunities to drive revenue. The ability to sell directly to users via these new stores will be a game-changer for many companies.”

Cross-Regional Acquisitions Will Shape the App Market

Kazakov predicts that larger US-based companies will acquire regional apps in Europe, creating a wave of consolidation in 2025. “As the growth of US firms in certain markets starts to plateau, they will turn to acquisitions to fuel growth,” he said. “By acquiring regional apps with strong local user bases, these companies can gain access to new markets, data, and customer insights, all while continuing to operate under the acquired app’s brand.”

This trend will also be particularly important in APAC, “where the market is highly fragmented and local apps are rapidly scaling. Expect more cross-border acquisitions that allow large players to capture regional user bases and tap into new data insights,” explained April Tayson, regional vice president for INSEAU at Adjust.

Data Privacy Will Be The Key To Trust and Compliance

In APAC, concerns over digital privacy are widespread. A recent report reveals that seven in 10 consumers expressed concerns about how their data is collected. This is particularly high in markets like the Philippines (86%), and Thailand and Singapore (both 81%).

In 2025, data privacy regulations will be more complex and demanding. New Regulations like the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) will require marketers to adopt new approaches to data storage and sharing with ad networks. Lukomsky anticipates that  there will be an increase in the adoption of multiple measurement frameworks to guide marketing decisions, making it an ideal time to explore what predictive and incremental solutions have to offer.

“As technology rapidly evolves, it’s vital for marketers in APAC to adapt their strategies to meet changing consumer behaviors,” Tayson said. “Countries in the APAC region spend significant time within apps, offering businesses a prime opportunity to engage with customers in meaningful ways. This trend is expected to grow in the coming years and will continue to shape the mobile marketing space.”

Evro charging network finds new home with ACMobility

ACMobility has acquired Evro, the Philippines’ first brand-agnostic roaming electric vehicle (EV) charging network, developed by Globe’s venture builder and tech innovation arm 917Ventures.

“We built Evro with the intention of simplifying Filipino EV owners’ charging journeys,” said Vince Yamat, managing director of 917Ventures. “Since launching earlier this year, we’ve made significant headway in advancing sustainable transport through our tech and partners. Entrusting Evro to ACMobility ensures it will continue to evolve and contribute to the advancement of sustainable transport.”

ACMobility is dedicated to advancing the growth of electrified mobility and closing infrastructure gaps that hinder EV adoption. Its acquisition of Evro further enables the company to address issues faced by EV users, particularly the availability and accessibility of nearby charging stations, which remains a common concern among drivers, especially those who take their EVs outside the city.

“We are thrilled to bring Evro into the ACMobility ecosystem,” said Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala, chief executive officer of ACMobility. “Evro is changing the game for electric vehicle adoption in the Philippines. Alongside our efforts in ACMobility, it will address range anxiety concerns and empower EV owners to have full control of their charging experience.”

Zobel de Ayala added, “The collaboration with 917Ventures and the Globe Group has been invaluable as we build a sustainable future for Filipino motorists together.”

As an e-Mobility Service Provider (eMSP), Evro seeks to consolidate the Philippines’ EV charging network regardless of brand or Charge-Point Operators (CPOs) to make them more accessible and convenient to local EV users. It is the only mobile app recognized by the Department of Energy (DOE).

    Evro

With the Evro app, EV drivers can:

    • Find the nearest available charging point. The app allows EV owners to check charger availability and compatibility with their vehicle.
    • Remotely monitor EV charging status. Drivers can monitor their vehicles’ charging session progress from any location and receive real-time updates through the app.
    • Pay cashless. Drivers can pay seamlessly through GCash or by credit card within the app.

Currently, the app features 33 live charging locations managed and operated by ACMobility, located in prime areas including:

    • One Bonifacio High Street
    • Greenbelt 3
    • Alabang Town Center
    • Trinoma
    • Nuvali Solenad 1
    • Baguio Ayala Technohub
    • Ayala Center Cebu
    • Abreeza Mall Davao
    • Anvaya Golf and Sports Club (Morong, Bataan).

Evro is currently in talks to onboard more CPOs onto the platform, with plans to expand its network further in the coming months.

Electric vehicles, a more sustainable transport alternative, has seen growing adoption in the Philippines, with industry groups expecting a 10% year-on-year rise in sales by yearend. The EV industry targets to sell 2.45 million EVs and operate 65,000 EVE charging stations across the country by 2028.

The Evro app is now available to download for free on the Google Play and Apple Stores. Registration to create an account is also free.

Drive Safely: How Ford Territory’s Icon-Inspired Headlights Reduce Nighttime Glare

With its auto high beam feature, the Ford Territory ensures that drivers are able to see more of the road when they most need to without facing the fear of dazzling other road users.

The holiday season calls for a lot of night driving — going around malls to shop, attending family reunions, and dining out with friends.

Driving at night could be dangerous; that’s why it is important these days to get a vehicle that allows for maximum safety for everyone on the road. One of these vehicles equipped with innovative lighting features is the Ford Territory.

The system uses the vehicle’s forward-facing camera which sits in the windscreen near the rear vision mirror — the same camera used by the active safety system. The camera looks down the road, and when it detects the head or taillights of another vehicle, it will switch the high beam on or off. The system is designed to softly adjust the lighting intensity rather than shutting it down immediately, helping the driver’s eyes adjust faster to changing light qualities.

The all-LED headlights boast five low-beam LEDs with four additional LEDs deployed when the high-beam is active, pushing the illumination from 105 meters to 117 meters. In addition to auto high beam, some Ford Territory variants are equipped with static turning lamps, which incorporate an additional light in the fog lamp, illuminating the side of the road to give you enhanced visibility through the turn.

    Ford Territory

    Clever design

When the Ford Territory was designed, it had one aim in mind, and that was to develop a vehicle that combined the commanding presence of Ford’s SUV range with the dynamic sportiness of its performance vehicles. Ford calls this design language, Progressive Energy in Strength.

The Ford Territory’s front-end is framed coast-to-coast by the integrated grille and LED daytime running lights with main headlights separated and sitting lower in the front fascia and defined corners emphasize the vehicle’s width and the commanding presence evident on other Ford SUVs like the Everest and Explorer.
