Hyundai IONIQ 5 N crowned ‘Performance Car of the Year’ at 2025 China Car of the Year Awards

Hyundai Motor Company’s IONIQ 5 N, the first electric vehicle (EV) model to wear an N badge, has been named the ‘Performance Car of the Year’ for 2025 at the prestigious China Car of the Year (China COTY) Awards.

The China COTY Awards, which started in 2012, is considered the most fair and authoritative in the country. It is evaluated by a panel of 48 representative automobile journalists and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from across China. The award is divided into seven categories, including the overall ‘Car of the Year’ in China and six other categories based on specific vehicle types.

IONIQ 5 N’s impressive performance and innovation were recognized in early November when it was named a Top 10 Finalist for the 2025 China COTY in the ‘Performance Car of the Year’ category. A few days later on November 22, it advanced to the Top 3, competing against Lynk & Co and Mercedes-Benz. This achievement highlights the rigorous test drives conducted by the judges, who selected IONIQ 5 N from a pool of 112 models across seven different categories. The high scores awarded to IONIQ 5 N underscore its exceptional performance and innovative features.

“Hyundai N made its debut in the Chinese market last year and has actively showcased the company’s high-performance electrification technology through the launch of IONIQ 5 N this year,” said Yong Il Yin, vice president and head of China N Brand Business Group. “Moving forward, we will continue to expand the unique and exciting experiences offered by the Hyundai N brand to strengthen our position in the Chinese market.”

Hyundai Motor is bolstering its presence in the Chinese market, focusing on both EVs and its high-performance N brand. The latter launched at the 2023 Shanghai International Motor Show and is integral to the company’s strategy in the world’s largest automotive market. Through the N brand, Hyundai Motor is enhancing customer experience through track day events and other events, highlighting vehicles like Elantra N and IONIQ 5 N.

Introduced in July 2023 as Hyundai N’s first EV, IONIQ 5 N represents a new segment of driver-focused high-performance EVs through new technologies and elevated racetrack capability, signaling the first step in N’s electrification strategy. It combines the standard IONIQ 5’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) with N’s motorsport-bred technologies and leverages N’s expertise from electrified ‘Rolling Labs’ to maximize the EV’s high-performance capabilities. IONIQ 5 N has been widely praised in the media as ‘groundbreaking,’ a ‘game-changer,’ and the ‘benchmark’ for high-performance EVs.

IONIQ 5 N has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, underscoring its exceptional performance and innovation in the EV market. Earlier this year, IONIQ 5 N was honored as the ‘World Performance Car’ at the 2024 World Car Awards. Later, it received recognition in the Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems and was named the ‘2024 Performance EV of the Year’ in the ‘Under USD100,000’ category by Road & Track. Additionally, IONIQ 5 N won Top Gear’s ‘2023 Car of the Year Award’ and Car Magazine’s ‘World’s Best Electric Performance Car.’ These numerous accolades serve to highlight the IONIQ 5 N’s significant impact in the EV market.

PUP Bagong Himig Serenata stages KALYE USAP: Duyog ng Pagkakaisa

PUP Bagong Himig Serenata (BHS), the resident choral group of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and known as “The Country’s Pioneer Dancing Chorale,” brought the streets to the stage in their recently concluded recital, KALye USAp: Duyog sa Pagkakaisa, held on December 6, 2024, at Tanghalang PUP in the COC Compound, Sta. Mesa, Manila. This one-of-a-kind recital redefined traditional choral performances by incorporating bodabil, a theatrical form blending singing, acting, and dancing.

More than a performance, KALye USAp was a bold artistic statement that combined entertainment and advocacy. Through this, the ensemble shined a light on topics such as the jeepney phaseout, gender equality, and territorial sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea. These themes, rooted in the everyday concerns of Filipinos, were approached with artistry and depth, which transformed casual street gossip into conversations of substance.

    KALye Usap

Inspired by Teresa Street, a familiar and beloved location for many PUP students, the recital took the familiar “tsismis” of the streets and used it to highlight social issues that matter. The title KALye USAp draws from the choir’s two clusters: Kalawili (KAL) and Hiliusa (USA). Both of these names symbolize harmony, reflecting how the choir seeks unity both within their group and in the conversations they hope to spark. Just like Teresa Street brings together different people with different stories, KALye USAp united a variety of voices that opened up space for dialogue and mutual understanding.

One of the event’s highlights was the formal elevation of the Batch ’23-’24 trainees into full-fledged members of Bagong Himig Serenata. This milestone honors the trainees’ dedication and reflects the choir’s continuous effort to guide and develop the talents of its members, providing an environment where they can improve and succeed.

KALye USAp is part of Bagong Himig Serenata’s long standing tradition of innovative productions. October has always been the group’s recital month, followed by an annual concert every December. These events pave the way for their biggest showcase—the Annual Choral Fest, held every March, coinciding with Art’s Month and Women’s Month.

The Choral Fest is a grand celebration that gathers choirs from across campuses and beyond, showing unity through diverse harmonies. Each year brings fresh themes, emphasizing creativity, advocacy, and the choir’s ability to adapt to changing times.

The PUP Bagong Himig Serenata extends heartfelt gratitude to its supporters, partner organizations, alumni, and audience for making this event a resounding success. Follow their social media platforms for more highlights and updates on their future performances.

Sumsub: APAC Sees 121% increase in identity fraud, with Deepfakes becoming a growing threat

Sumsub, a full-cycle verification platform, released its fourth annual Identity Fraud Report, highlighting a continued rise in identity fraud across the Asia Pacific region (APAC), driven by increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics and the widespread use of Fraud-as-a-Service (FaaS). According to internal verification data, there was a 121% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase in identity fraud in 2024 across the region, with significant surges recorded in Singapore (207%), Thailand (206%) and Indonesia (201%). Notably, deepfake fraud saw a 194% YoY spike in APAC and increased 4x globally, now making up 7% of all fraud attempts in 2024.

“As the digital economy in APAC continues to grow, the evolving nature of fraud presents new challenges that businesses cannot afford to ignore. With tactics becoming more sophisticated and fraud becoming more accessible, the need for enhanced verification measures is more urgent than ever. Robust identity protection is not just a preventive measure but a fundamental part of securing the future of digital businesses and protecting consumers in an increasingly complex landscape,” said Penny Chai, vice president of Business Development, APAC at Sumsub.

Other key findings from the report include:

    • The top 5 identity fraud types in 2024 include: fake documents (50%), chargebacks (15%), account takeovers (12%), deepfakes (7%), and fraud networks (4%).
    • The top 5 industries with the highest fraud growth rate in 2024 are dating (265%), online media (180%), banking & insurance (162%), fintech (156%) and edtech (144%).
    • South Korea experienced the highest increase in deepfake attacks at 735%, followed by Cambodia and Singapore, both at 240%.
    • 85% of respondents of Sumsub’s Fraud Exposure Survey 2024 in APAC are concerned about deepfakes, expressing fear about their future impact on elections.

How Fraud-as-a-Service is Enabling Widespread Cybercrime

The economics of fraud have shifted dramatically, making it more affordable than ever for fraudsters to execute large-scale operations with minimal investment. Today, anyone can access the resources needed to launch fraudulent schemes, regardless of their technical expertise. This shift is largely driven by FaaS platforms and widely available fraud tools, which provide a range of services to facilitate cybercrime, including identity theft, account takeovers, and financial fraud. The scalability offered by FaaS models further amplifies the issue, enabling fraudsters to launch a higher volume of attacks and making it even more difficult for businesses to detect, prevent, and mitigate fraud effectively.

The Growing Complexity of Fraud in the Digital Age

Alongside the rise in mass fraud, there has been a notable increase in more sophisticated, organized fraud schemes. These operations, often involving coordinated fraud networks and money muling, target multiple platforms and industries, and are more difficult to detect and disrupt, leading to significant financial losses for businesses. In Q1 2024, approximately one in every 100 online platform users was associated with a fraud network. In fact, seven of the top-10 jurisdictions for such fraud networks are concentrated in the APAC region, including Thailand, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

Safeguarding the Future of APAC’s Digital Economy

As economies across APAC continue to digitalize, the threat of identity fraud will only escalate. The shift towards a digital-first economy presents greater opportunities for fraudsters, making it even more critical for businesses and governments to take proactive measures. Without a robust framework for identity verification and fraud prevention, the rise in cybercrime will continue to undermine the growth of the digital economy and erode consumer trust.

Super Mario Party Jamboree game review

In my experience, party games can be fun, challenging, and competitive. A common marketing phrase that has existed long before gaming has been “fun for the whole family,” and party games can get everyone involved—your parents, siblings, relatives, and friends can all join in and make gaming a family and/or friends event. Throw in the classic Mario characters we all know and love, and it becomes even better as multiple generations of people will be familiar with our favorite Italian plumber and his ever-growing cast of friends in Super Mario Party Jamboree.

Players start in the Party Plaza and can choose from a cast of 22 characters, including Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Bowser, Daisy, Peach, and more. New characters include Pauline from the Donkey Kong series and Ninji from Super Mario Bros. 2. The main mode, simply named Mario Party, lets you and three other friends (or AI-controlled characters) play a board game where whoever collects the most stars wins. Sounds simple enough, right? There is a lot that Jamboree offers in this installment.

You can collect items that can help or harm your chances at winning, and at the end of everyone’s turns, you play a minigame that requires mastery of motion controls (although you can turn them off). Jamboree Buddies can come in and help you win the game as well after playing the mini-game, and they can last three turns. For instance, you can have Waluigi steal coins from your opponents when he passes them. For those with that competitive spirit in them, you can also play with “Pro Rules” that removes most luck-based aspects in the game and truly makes it a test of skill.

For those going at it solo, you can play “Party Planner Trek” mode and talk to various NPCs who give you quests or mini-games to collect Mini-Stars to unlock customization options for your characters. When you collect a certain number of Mini-Stars, you then play a Boss Minigame (complete with boss health bars and all). Another mode called “Minigame Bay” mode allows you to freely play any minigame or a set of minigames that can be arranged by themes, allowing you to truly challenge yourself even in an unbalanced way (1v3). Boss Rush sub-mode, which is unlocked after 30 in-game achievements, allows you and your friends to compete in boss minigames with the highest score winning.

One of my favorite modes that utilizes motion controls is “Rhythm Kitchen” mode, a rhythm-based minigame with a cooking theme. “Toad’s Factory” mode is a puzzle-based game where players have to move a ball to a goal (and a corporate team-building exercise if you so wish). The mode that truly tested my party game chops was “Paratroopa Flight School” mode as you have to move singular Joy-Con controllers to mimic flapping wings a la the notorious 2013 mobile game Flappy Bird. You can compete in sub-modes for time attack, carry characters to destinations, or even just fly around aimlessly.

    SUper Mario

Jamboree brings a pretty interesting mode called “Bowser Kaboom Squad” mode which allows eight players to fight Imposter Bowser through various objectives and by playing minigames for objects to defeat him faster. “Koopathlon” mode has 20 players competing to complete laps around a board through collecting coins in minigames. After three of these minigames, a Bowser-themed minigame happens when players can be sent backward on the board if they lose. You can play either through local or online multiplayer, allowing you to keep the fun going in-person or online. You can even climb an online leaderboard by playing minigames and compete to be the very best not only among your friends and family, but also among people all over the world.

Super Mario Party Jamboree is fun for everyone, bringing the nostalgia of previous Mario Party entries while introducing the characters to a whole new generation of gamers. The Mario franchise is Shigeru Miyamoto’s brainchild, and Jamboree continues to build on a legacy that has lasted for over 40 years and continues to wow all gamers to this very day. It’s a solid addition for the holiday season, and a good time sink if you want to get competitive with friends, family, and even Internet strangers.

New innovation challenge for the fast and efficient assessment of forest roads conditions

Harvests from timber trees are collected every 15-21 years. But before logging and transport, existing forest roads for transporting wood need to be reviewed and repaired. Currently, this assessment is performed manually by shelling every 300m to obtain the thickness of the layer of aggregates per section. If it is under 12cm, it is necessary to add more gravel so that the road has at least 12cm thickness.

In this context, CMPC is looking for more efficient alternatives to measure forest road conditions. The solution to this challenge is open and may come through either a technology that quickly measures the thickness of gravel or through a new agile process that directly tests the mechanical capacity of the road for truck transit.

Participation is open to engineering companies, startups, specialists in soil mechanics and digital technologies applicable to the construction and maintenance of roads, etc. but also to any company from another industry or tech center willing to propose a solution to this challenge.

This is an innovation contest with the opportunity to co-develop with one of the largest Chilean multinationals with a presence in 11 countries and more than 50 plants producing wood, pulp, and other renewable products. The winner of the innovation challenge for the efficient assessment of forest roads conditions would start with an initial project to test the solution together with the CMPC team and would be rewarded with USD20,000 for validation.

Those interested in participating should register at www.ennomotive.com, accept the challenge, and submit their solution before 21 January 2024.

The Future of Identity: 2025 Predictions

2025 is poised to be a defining year for digital identity. iProov, a science-based biometric identity solutions provider,  has unveiled its predictions on how individuals and businesses will navigate trust and security online. From emerging authentication methods to fraudsters’ evolving tactics, these predictions will offer crucial insights into the dynamic forces shaping the future of digital identity verification, authentication, and fraud prevention. Stay tuned for a glimpse into what lies ahead!

    1. 2025: The Year Deepfakes Breaks the News?

Deepfakes will pose a significant threat to the integrity of news and media. A major broadcaster will admit that a recent interview featured a deepfake, which will spark widespread concern about the impact of AI-generated media on journalism and information integrity. Such will be the shockwaves that we will see calls for new content attribution technologies and stronger media literacy initiatives. The incident will serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in the age of deepfakes and the need to safeguard information integrity.

    2. Biometric Borders Go Global: Say Goodbye to Lines, Hello to Secure, Seamless Travel

The use of facial verification at border crossings will spread rapidly, speeding up passenger processing and enhancing security. Programs like Eurostar’s SmartCheck biometric system are already paving the way, allowing travelers to verify their identity with a simple glance or scan. Automated systems will optimize passenger flow, reduce congestion, and slash wait times while dramatically reducing the load on border officials. Privacy will be prioritized, with travelers opting in and data protected by decentralized identity technologies. This shift will usher in a new era of seamless and secure travel, making it easier for people to connect and explore the world with confidence.

    3. The Deepfake CEO: Identity Verification Becomes Mission-Critical for Market Trust

A deepfake of a Fortune 500 CEO will cause significant disruption in the financial markets. The fabricated video, announcing a false merger, will trigger a temporary market dip and erode investor confidence before being exposed. This incident will highlight the growing need for robust identity verification solutions to ensure the authenticity of information and maintain trust in an increasingly digital world.

Companies and investors will respond by prioritizing biometric authentication, investing in deepfake digital injection protection tools, enhancing communication protocols, and putting a strong focus on digital identity verification in all online interactions to prevent impersonation and fraud.

This incident will serve as a catalyst, accelerating the adoption of advanced identity verification solutions in the financial industry.

    4. The Great Deepfake Hiring Heist: Organizations Fall Prey to a Mass Synthetic Identity Attack

Remember earlier this year when KnowBe4 fell victim to a remote deepfake hiring scam using a synthetic identity? In 2025, a far larger synthetic identity operation will infiltrate organizations worldwide. A state adversary will combine deepfakes with fabricated credentials to create entirely new, convincing employee personas, bypassing security to gain access, steal data, and cause operational chaos with significant financial losses. This sophisticated scheme will exploit remote onboarding processes, manipulate employees, and even infiltrate payroll systems to divert funds and disrupt livelihoods. This incident will cause organizations to change how they approach identity verification and cybersecurity in the age of increasingly sophisticated synthetic identities.

    5. The EU Identity Wallet: Unanswered Questions and Looming Challenges

As the EU Identity Wallet progresses to its planned roll-out in 2026, expect heated debates around its business model and liability framework. Who will shoulder the development, maintenance, and service provision costs – governments, private companies, or users themselves? Imagine a scenario where a compromised process leads to fraud on a mass scale – who will be held responsible and how will victims be compensated? These questions are critical and must be addressed. Will wallet providers find ways to charge citizens, potentially excluding groups in the population? Will businesses face hefty fees for usage, stifling innovation? And if system failures disrupt essential services, who will bear the cost? The EU must strike a delicate balance: fostering a competitive market for wallet providers while ensuring accessibility, security, and a robust legal framework to address these complex issues. The answers will determine not only the wallet’s success but its impact on the digital economy and society as a whole.

    6. Oversharing Parents Render Security Questions Obsolete: ‘First Pet’ No Longer a Secret

By the end of 2025, the ubiquitous practice of “sharenting” – parents excessively sharing their children’s information online – will render traditional knowledge-based authentication security questions like “What is the name of your first pet?” utterly useless. With parents readily divulging these personal details on social media, fraudsters will have a field day exploiting this readily available information to bypass security measures and compromise accounts.

While seemingly innocuous, these details can be exploited by malicious actors, jeopardizing online security. This will force a shift towards more robust authentication methods, like facial biometrics with liveness combined with other forms of multi-factor authentication, to safeguard accounts from increasingly sophisticated social engineering attacks.

    7. Big Tech Eclipses Governments: Meta, Mercado Libre, and Globant Become Digital Identity Gatekeepers

Tech giants like Meta, Mercado Libre, and Globant will begin to wield more influence over digital identity than many governments. Their massive user bases and advanced technologies will position them as de facto identity authorities, controlling access to online services. This could enhance convenience and security but also erode government control and raise privacy concerns, highlighting the growing power of Big Tech in shaping the future of digital identity.

    8. Governments Race to Digital ID: 2025 – The Year of the National Identity App

Driven by security threats and the demand for seamless online services, 2025 will see a global surge in government-issued digital ID programs. Countries will accelerate efforts to deploy national digital ID systems, putting secure digital identities in citizens’ hands. This shift, fueled by the limitations of physical documents and the need for stronger cybersecurity, will pave the way for a more secure and inclusive digital future.

    9. Data Privacy Takes Center Stage: Selective Disclosure Drives Verifiable Credentials Boom

The growing demand for data privacy and user control will fuel a surge in the adoption of decentralized identities. Empowered by the ability to selectively disclose only the necessary information, individuals will embrace this technology to seamlessly and securely prove their identity or attributes without revealing their entire personal profile. This rise in the use of decentralized digital credentials will empower individuals to confidently navigate the digital world while safeguarding their privacy. It will also create new opportunities for businesses and public bodies to build trust and offer personalized services without running the risk of compromising user data.

    10. Deepfake Fraud Wave Forces Banks’ Hand: Regulators Mandate New Biometric Payment Authentication

As deepfake technology becomes increasingly weaponized by hostile state actors and criminals in 2025, a wave of account takeovers and fraudulent transactions will force banking regulators worldwide to take decisive action. Led by pioneers like Thailand and Vietnam, countries will mandate the implementation of biometric verification for payment authentication, adding an extra layer of security to protect customers and financial institutions.

This move towards mandated biometric payment authentication will significantly enhance the security of digital transactions, making it more difficult for fraudsters to exploit stolen identities or manipulate systems. It will also accelerate the adoption of biometrics in the financial sector, paving the way for more secure and trustworthy digital banking experiences.
