Instagram makes Luma—the creator of a video-capture stabilization and sharing app—its first acquisition, purchasing both the team and technology of the company behind it, Y Combinator, possibly in an attempt to bring Instagram’s video function to a higher level.
Stated the Luma team on their website, “Eighteen months ago, we embarked on a mission to make capturing and sharing beautiful videos easy without expensive software or heavy equipment. By joining the exceptionally talented team at Instagram, we’re taking another big step towards realizing that mission.”
Along with the acquisition, highlights will be added to the basics like video stabilization and adjustments for brightness and saturation. Luma will also bring its “Infinite Filter” tech into the photo and video sharing app. Users can now add or remove filters to video clips at will once the footage is in the can.
The Luma app will shut down on December 31, 2013.
