In its most recent earnings report, BlackBerry revealed that it shipped 6.8 million smartphones in the first quarter of fiscal 2014. However, at the same time, the company lost USD 84 million, with USD 3.1 billion worth of revenue (15% up from previous quarter revenue).
“The smartphone market remains highly competitive, making it difficult to estimate units, revenue and levels of profitability,” said BlackBerry in its official news release.
BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins remarked at the company’s earnings call held earlier today that despite the loss, he is proud of how BlackBerry is able to come up with its own mobile platform.
Of the 6.8 million BlackBerry smartphone units that were shipped in Q1, 2.7 million were BB10 devices.The company claimed that the remainder of fiscal 2014 will be spent investing in BlackBerry 10 smartphone launches and the roll out of BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. Unfortunately for BlackBerry Playbook owners, Heins confirmed during the earnings call that PlayBook will not see a BlackBerry 10 upgrade due to “performance and user experience concerns.”
The company’s news release also mentioned that they will also invest resources to bring BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to other mobile platforms. Heins announced last month that BlackBerry Messenger will be heading to iOS and Android within the next few months and that it will be available for free.
