In news that brings us even closer to humanity as a single hive mind, Facebook has acquired Oculus Rift VR.

For those who have just gotten out of a coma, have time-traveled from the past, or have otherwise not have had access to the Internet, Oculus Rift VR makes the Oculus Rift, a virtual reality stereoscopic headset that allows the immersive 3D viewing of digital media such as games.

While gaming is the primary application for which the O.R. was created, Facebook’s purchase of the company has broader applications in mind, mostly in the fields of communication, education, and “the most social platform ever,” according to a Facebook statement. It also hinted at preparing for the future, which makes sense, as the mobile platform isn’t likely to be a permanent thing (how many things in tech are, anyway?).

The deal went down to the tune of USD 2 billion (yes, with a “B”) and includes a USD400 million cash payment and Facebook shares amounting to USD 1.6 billion, plus more cash and stock if performance milestones are met. I for one welcome our social media overlords, and hope things go well for their dreams of global conquest.
