Honda will be utilizing Nvidia’s Tegra mobile processor in their newest Honda Connect in-car audio and information system, making the automotive company the 19th global car maker to use Nvidia’s prowess for in-vehicle infotainment products. To debut this partnership’s product will be the 2015 versions of the Honda Civic, Civic Tourer, and CR-V, all set to be launched in Europe next year.
“Honda is bringing Nvidia’s advanced mobile technology to an important new segment of vehicles,” exclaimed Rob Csongor, vice president and general manager for Automotive at Nvidia. “Inside these Honda models, the Nvidia Tegra solution leverages Android to deliver an open, flexible infotainment platform. One that bridges the world of smartphone apps and the requirements of the automotive industry but, most importantly, does so in a way that makes driving safer.”
The Honda Connect is a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display used for purposes such as satellite navigation, AM/FM/DAB, rearview camera, and various vehicle information. It connects to the Honda App Center for compatible apps such as Aha Radio. Nvidia’s Tegra processor will be running under the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system to ensure that interfacing will be easy, intuitive, and responsive as with smartphones and tablets.
Over 6 million cars are currently employing Nvidia’s processors for their mobility needs. In the next five years, Nvidia is expecting to ship 25 million additional processors as manufacturers continue to integrate smart systems into their arsenal of vehicles.
