YouTube wants users to use their real names when commenting, hopes to alleviate trollish behaviour

Blogger Jim Younkin III noticed something new when he tried to comment in YouTube the other day. It seems like YouTube (and Google, by extension) wants users to use their real names when commenting. Which makes sense – most people view YouTube’s comments as one of the worst places in the internet, which is a feat, considering that 4Chan’s /b/ has not been taken off the internet (yet). The premise is simple – you’re less likely to troll or spam or make disparaging remarks when your real name is on the line. While it’s unknown if the move is likely to clamp down on trollish behavior or if Google is planning to make the change mandatory. We’re hoping that this changes things for the better down at YouTube land.
