Synology has introduced the DP5200, a compact 1U ActiveProtect appliance designed to help growing organizations, managed service providers, and remote offices protect and manage data across multiple platforms and locations.
The appliance offers up to 36TB of usable capacity and includes the enterprise backup capabilities of Synology’s ActiveProtect Manager platform. It can operate as a standalone backup server for a local site or serve as a central management system for distributed environments.
“Businesses today struggle to find data protection that scales to their exact needs without compounding cost and complexity,” said Jia-Yu Liu, executive vice president of the Data Protection Group at Synology. “We designed the DP5200 to give organizations and MSPs a space-efficient, unified solution that deploys effortlessly across branch offices, remote sites, and data centers while delivering maximum value.”
Support for multiple platforms and workloads
The DP5200 supports a range of virtualized, physical, cloud-based, database, and file-server environments. Supported virtualization platforms include VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V.
For physical infrastructure, the appliance can protect Windows and Linux servers, Windows PCs, and macOS devices. It also supports Microsoft 365, Oracle and Microsoft SQL databases, and file servers using SMB, NetApp, and Nutanix systems.
Synology plans to expand workload support through the upcoming ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 update. The release is expected to add support for Azure Virtual Machines, Amazon EC2, Nutanix AHV, Proxmox VE, and Google Workspace.
Centralized backup management
Organizations may deploy the DP5200 as a standalone backup server for workloads within a single site. It can also function as a central management server for larger, distributed environments.
According to Synology, the system can consolidate the management of up to 120,000 workloads and monitor as many as 1,000 servers across multiple locations. Administrators can oversee these environments through a unified management interface.
This deployment flexibility allows organizations to use the appliance in branch offices and remote sites while maintaining centralized visibility from a primary data center or management location.
Immutable storage and logical air-gapping
The DP5200 combines multifactor authentication-backed access controls with an architecture designed to strengthen backup protection against unauthorized changes and cyber threats.
It supports the 3-2-1-1-0 data protection approach through immutable Write Once, Read Many storage, logical air-gaps, and version-based data tiering. These controls are intended to preserve clean backup copies and reduce the risk of stored data being altered or deleted during an attack.
The 3-2-1-1-0 strategy calls for maintaining multiple copies of data across different storage types, including one copy kept offline or immutable, while verifying that backups contain no errors.
AI-assisted threat detection coming with APM 2.0
The forthcoming ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 update will introduce AI- and machine learning-assisted security functions. Synology says these capabilities will examine backup activity for anomalies and scan stored data for malware.
The added functions are intended to help organizations identify suspicious activity during the backup process rather than relying solely on recovery after an incident. Malware scanning will also help verify that restored data is clean before it is returned to production systems.
Synology expects ActiveProtect Manager 2.0 to become available in the third quarter of 2026. Features associated with the update should therefore be treated as forthcoming rather than included in the DP5200 at launch.
