The most recent update for Gmail’s Android app rolled out last week, and according to an announcement made by the Gmail team, the tweaks in this version include some design improvements for conversations, check marks for multiple message selection, and an indicator that tells you if account sync is turned off.

However, an APK teardown by Artem Russakovskii of Android Police revealed something rather interesting—that the update possibly includes support for ads.

Russakovskii claims to have found an entire library called “ads”.

Inside the folder are eight classes that pertain to ad presentation.

    • AdBorderItem
    • AdHeaderItem
    • AdHeaderView
    • AdSenderHeaderItem
    • AdSenderHeaderView
    • AdTeaserView
    • AdToastBarOperation
    • AdViewFragment

Multiple references to ad support have also been discovered during the said teardown.

    <string name=”ad”>AD</string>
    <string name=”ad_will_not_save”>Will not save ad as message</string>
    <string name=”ad_will_save”>Will save ad as message</string>
    <string name=”ad_dismissed”>Ad dismissed</string>

Russakovskii’s findings ultimately indicate that it is likely that we’ll be seeing ads on the Gmail Android app soon. Meanwhile, the browser version still isn’t ad-free.
