Over the past couple of days, multiple sources have been buzzing about Instagram possibly gaining the ability to take and share not just filtered photos, but now, short videos as well. It is rumored that Facebook, owner of Instagram, will announce the app’s newly acquired video-taking capability at its next press event, which will take place on June 20th in the US.

TechCrunch was the first to report the rumor, claiming that according to their source, Instagram will begin to allow users to “take and share short videos” within the same app. No word on whether it will be a standalone app or simply an added function to the existing app. Neither are there any news on the possibility of video filters and whether or not Instagram will apply a time-limit on video clips a la Vine, Twitter’s standalone video app.

Facebook has been doing a good job keeping things under wraps since, as of press, there has been no confirmation from the company.

If you think about it, it’s a pretty smart move. Typically, mobile users take and share photos with Instagram, while they take short videos using Vine or Viddy. With an in-app video function, users would be able to perform both functions without having to leave Instagram and launching any other app, thereby increasing Instagram‘s value to the user.

True? It’d be cool if it were. We’ll update you as soon as the news is confirmed, so stay tuned.
