Another internet buzzword makes it to the A-list of Oxford Dictionaries (last year’s champ was ‘GIF’)—the term ‘selfie’ has been hailed as the 2013 Word of the Year. (Really, would you have any second thoughts if even the Pope has jumped on the bandwagon?)
“Language research conducted by Oxford Dictionaries editors reveals that the frequency of the word selfie in the English language has increased by 17,000% since this time last year,” read the official announcement.
‘Selfie’ was added to the Oxford Dictionaries in August 2013. Here is how it is defined:
selfie noun, informal
(also selfy; plural selfies)
a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website
Interestingly, one of the runners-up for this year’s top honors is ‘twerk’.
