Vibal leads forum to rally against use of students’ data for non-educational purposes

    Vibal-1

The “Are Your Kids Tech-Safe?” forum hosted by Vibal Foundation, Inc. took place earlier today at the Makati Shangri-la, where parents, educators and government representatives gathered to discuss issues surrounding data privacy in education in order to raise awareness and encourage concerned individuals to take action in ensuring that information provided by children in schools will not be used for non-educational purposes.

Vibal Group of Companies chair Esther Vibal claims that with the expansion of tech-aided teaching and learning, certain “safety nets” must be developed in educational institutions to protect the data privacy of Filipino students.

The keynote speaker at the forum was Jeff Gould of SafeGov.org, a worldwide organization striving to help the public sector make the right choices in selecting the most transparent or ethical technology providers. Gould discussed the concept of data mining, where certain businesses acquire one’s personal information through various technology sources, such as social media and one’s network provider, without one’s consent.

Vibal-3Jeff Gould delivers his keynote presentation

“You can always be identified once they get data from you. If you want people to know who you are, and if they tell you what they’re doing—if they ask your permission and you give it to them—you can control and stop everything they’re doing whenever you want. That’s good, but the children at schools don’t have that ability,” said Gould. “Even if they knew what was happening, you wouldn’t necessarily trust your children to make the right decisions. We know that they give away their email and they click on links on the web that they shouldn’t click on. We’re not saying it’s a bad thing. We’re saying that in schools, it needs to be carefully regulated.”

In his keynote, Gould emphasized that companies should stop using “personal identifiable information” of children and tracking their online activities as their data may end up in the hands of hackers, human traffickers, and identity thieves, among others.

Gould remarked, “A lot of companies are offering free cloud services to schools, and that’s a good thing. We want companies to continue to offer free cloud services such as email to schools all over the world. But there’s no reason why the schools should pay for those good services with basically giving up children’s privacy. You can get both. You can get the free services from the web companies and you can protect children’s privacy. You don’t have to give up one to get the other.”

Vibal-2(L-R) Gould, Cipriano, Empleyo, Villanueva, Ferrer, Diloy, and Del Prado

A mix of educators and advocates were invited to join Gould in a panel discussion regarding data privacy in education: Jovel Cipriano, founder of interactive educational program Websafekids.org; Janice Villanueva, founder of Mommy Mundo; Rhodora Ferrer, executive director of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines; Ysrael Diloy, one of the core trainers for the advocacy team of Stairway Foundation; Ka Arnulfo Empleyo, president of the National Association of Public Secondary School Heads; Atty. Noel Del Prado, Legal Consultant at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Legal and Legislative Affairs in the Department of Education.

Empleyo argued, “Prevention is better than cure.

“In the home, we can easily fix the privacy settings on the computer and the routers can be configured, said Mommy Mundo founder Villanueva. “But now we realize that we also have to do things to make sure that the protection goes beyond our home—to the second home, which is the school.”

BBM for iPhone and Android coming soon

    BBM-iOS-Android

It looks like BlackBerry Messenger will be going into direct competition with the likes of WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook Chat, Skype and iMessage after BlackBerry announced that it would be launching on iOS and Android.

A tweeted photo of the app made by fan-based Twitter feed BlackBerry Worldwide (@bbworldwid) showed that BBM for iPhone and Android could be launching as early as the 27th of June.

Although BlackBerry has not released an official date yet, we find this amazing news as this will be the first time that the BBM service will be launched on other operating systems.

Little else is known about the app. What we do know is that it will add support for BBM Channels (the new social engagement platform within BBM that lets users connect with businesses, brands, celebrities and groups), as well as voice and video chatting for iOS and Android later this year.

Cheers to the silver years: The Philippine Software Industry Association commemorates 25 years of success

    0

PSIA 25years_logoThe escalation of the information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) can be credited to the progress of software development and the IT outsourcing sector, says the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), a partner association of the Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines. The association, whose goal is to aid in the advancement of global competitiveness and growth of the country’s software industry, is now celebrating its 25th aniversary, commemorating its ground-breaking work that largely contributed to the success of the sector.

    PSIA 2

PSIA President Nora Terrado said that the Philippines has been an imperative destination for IT services and outsourcing software development over the years. “Our sector is composed of companies with solid track records of delivering high-value software services and with decades of software development experience focused on niche technology areas and industry domains,” Terrado added.

In an industry delegating for Japan IT Week’s Software Development Expo (SODEC), PSIA played a key role through taking part in a series of meetings and seminars, and an exhibition. The PSIA delegation included Advanced World Systems, Inc., Alliance Software, Inc., CAI-STA Philippines, Inc., Manpower Group, Pointwest Technologies Corp., PNI Business Solutions, Tsukiden Global Solutions, and Ubiquitous Technologies Philippines, Inc.

In the event KLab Scorpions, a Japanese firm investor in the Philippines, founder Taro Naguchi highly commended the Philippine software and IT industry. Keizo Kawata of Nihon Unisys Ltd. added that among the qualities of Filipino software developers and IT professionals, their ability to speak better English gives them an edge over their competitors.

In an annual ranking by investment advisory firm Tholons released early this year, Philippine cities Manila and Cebu ranked third and eighth, respectively, in the top 100 global outsourcing destinations, beating out other countries. Furthermore, in a report from international research firm Everest Group, the Philippines join the ranks of India, China, and Poland as an established destination for software development and ITO. Other key strengths of the sector are content creation, strong social media penetration, and cultural similarity with the US and Asian market.

PSIA has also been on the talks of start-ups and the innovation ecosystem at the Cebu ICT-BPO Conference.

A culminating dinner entitled, “PSIA Silver Night” and a general membership meeting on June 28 will wrap off the series of activities that mark PSIA’s 25th anniversary.

    exterior_0001s_0005_layer 23.ashx

Kia once again surprised the public as they launched the newest member of their family – The All-New Kia Carens – on the 31st of May at Bonifacio Global High Street, Taguig.

Prior to the arrival of the All-New Carens, Kia has teamed up with DreamWorks’ animated film, The Croods, to introduce their newest member in a fun, unique and thematic way.

The All-New Kia Carens is a compact MPV that’s designed and engineered from scratch to meet the needs of modern families. With a design team winning a Gold Star Car Award by Wheels Magazine from Australia for the second consecutive year, as well as four prestigious ‘Red Dot’ design awards, the new Carens prides itself with sleek aerodynamics and a cab-forward design that coalesces contemporary and distinctive exterior styling with a fresh and trendy interior.

Offering customers in the Philippine market a diesel powertrain, up to seven seats and a wide variety of convenience features, the new third-generation Carens is set to draw even more customers to the Kia brand.

The new Kia Carens is a more compact yet more spacious vehicle than its precursor. Its overall height (1,610 mm) is the same as the Kia Soul and is one of the lowest in class, giving the model an especially sporty appearance.

While the new Carens is a family-focused vehicle, driver comfort in every model is assured, owing to the tilt-and-telescopic adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable driver’s seat and the adoption of an organ-type accelerator pedal pivoting on the floor and moving in a way that matches the natural motion of the human foot.

Other things to watch out for are the Kia Carens’ six-speed transmission and the running gear that guarantees to deliver responsive handling, excellent straight-line stability, and exceptional ride quality and refinement on a wide variety of surfaces.

A Road to a Brighter Tomorrow: Isuzu-TESDA Auto Mechanic Training Center continues aiding underprivileged students

    0

    TESDA6thgraduationceremonymay2013photo1

Subsidized by Isuzu Motors Limited (IML) of Japan, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) continues to run its Auto Mechanic Training Center in Tacloban, Leyte, providing free education to underprivileged, but commendable out-of-school youth to gain needed knowledge for better job opportunities.

The training center, founded in 2008, stemmed out from IML’s corporate social responsibility campaign “Heart and Smile.” Not limited to financial support, IML also equips their benefactors’ technical requirements to help facilitate the education course, such as training materials, program modules, practical applications and other skills enhancement tools. Apart from IML, World Vision—an international, Christian, humanitarian, development and advocacy organization—also assists in offering quality technical education to the youth as an equally valuable partner of the project.

Producing a competent and dynamic workforce trained to meet the demands of both local and international market, the training center also intends to develop potential technical-vocational trainers among the graduates of the program and supply trainers in the Visayas region. “With the pooled assistance of TESDA, World Vision and Isuzu, as well as the efforts of the trainees and trainers, this center is now a well-known training facility,” said IML Senior Counselor Yoshinori Ida. 201 trainees have undergone and are, at present, undergoing NC1 to NC4 training at the center. NC4 refers to the automotive servicing qualification in the Philippines.

The sixth batch who entered the program recently graduated with three top students emerging among 17 trainees: honorable mention Gerald Surio, salutatorian Michael Dalangin and the 22-year-old batch valedictorian Charlie Belano.

Graduates of the Auto Mechanic Center training program are currently employed at Isuzu Philippines Corporation, Isuzu Autoparts Manufacturing Corp, various Isuzu dealerships, IPC affiliates, and overseas companies, meeting the goal of the training center in uplifting the quality of automotive education in the Philippines and promoting the general local car industry.

First Impressions: Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8

Samsung has always been about pushing the design envelope, at least when it comes to the size of their devices. Samsung, being the constant innovators they are, have announced twin Android phablets in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Mega 6.3. If you know your naming conventions, we’re pretty sure you know where this is going. The former has a large 5.8-inch screen, while the latter a massive 6.3 one. Our friends at Samsung were kind enough to send us one of each before the actual launch. You might want to step back a bit. There’s a lot to take in.

    20130604_101603_Richtone(HDR)

A quick look at the devices and it is immediately apparent that Samsung would rather not mess with a working formula. The phones are reminiscent of their typical galaxy phone design. As a matter of fact, one could not be faulted if, after looking at the photo above, one would think these were the SIII and S4 side-by-side. The build quality of both are typical of Samsung. Plastic, but not in a negative way.

    20130604_095335_Richtone(HDR)

Both feel very solid, and can probably take their fair share of bumps and knocks. I have always said that plastic is no hindrance to a premium feel.  These phones, along with their flagship S-series galaxy devices are excellent examples of such build.  The Mega 5.8 even has a similarly-designed back as the S4. While the previous photo did little to make the size of the devices apparent, this one here will erase all doubt about just how large these bad boys are.

    20130604_095439_Richtone(HDR)

Above is the Mega 6.3, against my favorite size reference, my favorite pen. There is no other way to describe the Galaxy 6.3 apart from “massive.” The phone itself is a whopping 6.60 x 3.46 x 0.31 inches, but is thankfully light at just a hair under 200 grams. It’s not something you can easily fit into the hip pocket of a standard pair of jeans (we tried). You can cram it in there, but once corner will inevitably stick out.
    20130604_095550_Richtone(HDR)

Here’s a quick look at just how large the screen is in relation to my hand. It’ll take a bit of a stretch to hit the far corner of the screen while it is in your hand. right off the bat, it seems the handiest way to run this device is with two hands, in landscape mode. Having said that, it’s always nicer to have too much screen rather than not enough, and this one has plenty. The display is a crisp 233-ppi deal which is pretty remarkable given that there is so much screen to cover. Even with the gigantic screen, the edges are sharp, and even fine text is readable.

    20130604_101425_Richtone(HDR)

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is the littler brother of the 6.3. To make up for the lost screen real-estate, the Mega 5.8 has the ability to run two sim cards at once. It’s still a pretty large phablet, but as a solution that will remove the need to carry a spare phone and/or tablet, I say the trade-off is fair.

The 5.8 is a little easier to hold than its bigger brother, and has a profile of 6.40 x 3.24 x 0.35 inches. It’s a shade lighter at 182g, and sits just a little nicer in the hand, owing to the smaller overall size.

    20130604_101235_Richtone(HDR)

The screen is a little less saturated compared to the larger of the two devices, though it is more than satisfactory, even for movie watching and gaming. (we’ve done both.)

We’ll be going through the devices more intensely over the next few days, so watch this space! We’ve got high hopes for both devices, and I’m sure Samsung won’t disappoint.

Xperia L to hit PH market this month, retails at PHP 14,990

    xperia-l-black-PS-1240x840_opt-b5f2c347c180630cf0f67767487e5161

The newest member of the Xperia family, the Xperia L, makes its way to the Philippines this month at a suggested retail price of PHP 14,990.

The highlight of this Xperia model is its 8-megapixel camera that uses Sony’s unique “Exmor RS for mobile” sensor technology that enables users to take sharp photos with rich colors and stunning clarity. Its High Dynamic Range (HDR) for photos and videos ensures that subjects are captured with utmost clarity, even when they are placed against a strong backlight. For quick shooting, there’s a dedicated button on the body of the Xperia L that launches the camera function even from a locked screen. Other camera features include 4x digital zoom, face detection, geotagging, image and video stabilization, touch-triggered capture and focus, a self-timer, and 720p video recording.

While the device wields a 4.3-inch FWVGA 854 x 480-pixel screen on which you can enjoy the vivid colors of your photos, the Xperia L also comes with NFC capabilities to give you a larger, better view of your pictures on a compatible TV screen. The device’s NFC capabilities also facilitates sharing of music and photos between appropriately equipped devices just by tapping them against one another. Sony touts this as the “One-Touch” function.

In terms of hardware, the Xperia L has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8230 dual-core processor and 8GB of internal memory that’s expandable to up to 32GB via microSD. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as its OS.

The Xperia L comes in white, red and black variations.
