Mobile browsing is Globe’s fastest-growing product line

Instant access to social networking sites like Facebook drives mobile browsing growth in the country

Globe’s mobile browsing segment, which includes mobile data plans like PowerSurf and mobile social network bundles like SuperFB, experiences a double-digit growth each year, making it the fastest-growing product line in Globe in Q1 of 2013, according to Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu.

Mobile browsing and other data revenues now account for 13% of total mobile revenues, up from 12% in the 4th quarter of 2012 and 10% in the 1st quarter of 2012.

“We are happy to see how our mobile browsing business has grown and how our offers have seen strong take-up among subscribers. Gone are the days when mobile browsing is feared by many because of billshock or the lack of understanding on how it works,” said head of Globe Mobile Data Services Jenny Granada-Echevarria. “With the growing penchant of Filipinos for smartphones and instant internet access, we are seeing a bright potential for mobile browsing as the next big thing for Globe and the industry in general.”

Globe also announced that they have completed the first phase of their massive network modernization program to provide strong backend support to the company’s mobile browsing offers. Currently, over 60% of the Globe network is already running on 4G HSPA+.

    Bionic eye prototype revealed

    bionic-eye-prototype

A team of Australian scientists and industrial designers has recently revealed their prototype of the world’s first bionic implement.

The device is hoped to allow recipients to see an outline of their surroundings by using a microchip implanted into the skull and a digital camera attached to a pair of glasses. If proven successful, the bionic eye would be able to help 85% of those people classified as legally blind.

Trials are set to begin next year. Professor Mark Armstrong of Australia’s Monash University said that the bionic eye should be able to provide recipients an extra level of mobility.

“There’s a camera at the front and the camera is actually very similar to an iPhone camera, so it takes live action for colour,” Armstrong said. “And then that imagery is then distilled via a very sophisticated processor down to, let’s say, a distilled signal.

“That signal is then transmitted wirelessly from what’s called a coil, which is mounted at the back of the head and inside the brain there is an implant which consists of a series of little ceramic tiles and in each tile are microscopic electrodes which actually are embedded in the visual cortex of the brain.”

According to Professor Armstrong, it is hoped that the technology will help those who are completely blind, enabling them to navigate their way around and thereby reconnect with the world in that way.

Power-generating shoe insole might be the next thing in mobile charging

    SolePower-shoe-insole

We use our mobile devices so much in our daily lives that we sometimes end up draining its battery long before the day is over. I once went so far as going to a cafe’s restroom just so I could charge my mobile phone. Up to now, I am still haunted by the look the guard gave me for taking so long in there without even buying a single pastry. And I’m sure you’ve found yourself in a similar situation too.

While it’s true that we already have powerbanks to solve this demise, this new technology from SolePower is much more cooler. And can also shed you a few pounds.

SolePower is a power generating shoe insole which lets you charge portable electronics while you walk. You simply slip the SolePower into your shoe and snake the charging wire through your laces. You then plug the charging wire into a battery which you fasten around your ankle or clipped on your shoe. And from here on, you walk. The energy from your steps is converted into power that is stored in the battery. After you’ve successfully walked a few miles, you can pat yourself on the back for charging the battery which you can then plug into your mobile devices.

As of now, SolePower is still a prototype and its creators are still on the works of developing this technology. You can find out more about their project here, or help them raise funds and visit their Kickstarter.

The all-touch BlackBerry A10 rumored to be launched soon

    0

    blackberry-10-300113

Step aside Blackberry Z10, reports from CNET claim that the Blackberry A10 will be released as a follow up to the all-touch Z10 this November.

The Blackberry Z10 released earlier this year was the first handset to run BlackBerry 10, with a dual-core processor, 8MP rear camera, capacitive touchscreen and other butt-kicking features. The combination of a sleek design, a new OS and features quickly made the Z10 one of 2013’s most anticipated handsets.

Although there are still no device specifications released, speculations say that the BlackBerry A10 will much likely be an upgraded and classier version of the Z10.

According to CNET, representatives from both BlackBerry declined to comment on the circulating rumor.

What do you think about the speculations on BlackBerry’s newest phone? Let us know in the comments!

Next iPhone to arrive in September?

    xl_Apple_iPhone_5_4

The next iPhone is likely to arrive in September, according to financial analyst, Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank Equity Research.

In an investors’ note released 4th of June, Whitmore remarked that Apple has begun placing orders for longer lead-time components, suggesting that Apple will start shooting up production in August for a late September release.

“Our checks indicate orders for the new iPhone are starting now for longer lead-time components,” Whitmore wrote. “Specifically, we believe Apple is currently placing component orders for iPhone volume manufacturing to ramp in the August timeframe, suggesting they’re on pace for a late September launch.”

The September release of the new iPhone seems plausible since Apple has a previous tendency of launching the iPhone around this period.

    Previous iPhone release dates:

    iPhone 1st generation: 29 June 2007
    iPhone 3G: 11 July 2008
    iPhone 3GS: 19 June 2009
    iPhone 4: 24 June 2010
    iPhone 4S: 14 October 2011
    iPhone 5: 21 September 2012

Petron launches Euro 4-compliant Blaze 100 Premium Plus gasoline in the Philippines

    Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4

Petron, a leading oil company in the Philippines, has just hit another milestone in fuel technology with their launch of the first Euro 4-compliant premium plus gasoine in the local market. The new Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4 is specially formulated to meet exacting Euro 4 standards.

Euro 4 compliance means that the fuel has sulfur levels not exceeding 50 parts per million (0.005%) and a maximum of 1% benzine by volume. Blaze 400 has about 10 times less sulfur and half the benzine that current Philippine regulation allows. Petron is rolling out the Euro 4 fuel a full two and a half years before the government-mandated switch, set to take effect in 2016. Petron has done this to highlight Petron’s commitment to its consumers, as well as the environment.

Apart from being better for the environment, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4 also offers greater performance thanks to its high octane content and superb engine cleaning properties. Fuel efficiency is also boosted thanks to its organic combustion enhancer and custom friction modifier.

“As the market leader in the local oil sector, it is our responsibility to be at the forefront of producing more environment-friendly fuels,” Petron Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang said. “This new product, Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4, is proudly Philippine-made.”

Petron Blaze 100 Euro 4 will initially be available in 24 service stations in Luzon, along major thoroughfares in Mega Manila, while rollout in Visayas and Mindanao will happen gradually over the next few months.

CSMS is first to offer In-Motion Robotic Therapy in PH

    Robotics-PR_DocPatientMale

Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) is the Philippines’ first and only hospital to offer In-Motion Robotic Therapy—a revolutionary technology that provides therapy and treatment to patients who suffer from neurological conditions such as stroke survivors and patients with spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.

CSMC Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Chair Dr. Ofelia Reyes explained that In-Motion Robotics is cost-effective because of its “intensive nature.” Results can be seen in a shorter period of time compared to standard stroke rehabilitation treatments. “And as proven by actual cases of our patients, the effects are long-term and longer lasting. The treatment gives stroke and other neurological patients new hope for a better quality of life,” Reyes emphasized.

In-Motion Robotic Therapy is particularly beneficial in helping stroke survivors relearn arm movements. The institution cited the experience of one CSMC patient who was treated with In-Motion Robotic therapy, Kwok Kwan Tan, 55, who suffered multiple damages in the brain after a stroke that paralyzed the left side of his body. Within only two months of treatment, Tan was able to relearn arm and leg movements. Prior to the treatment, Tan underwent daily physical therapy for a year and a half, which only resulted in limited movement of his arms and legs.

The principle by which In-Motion Robotic Therapy operates is neuroplasticity—that the brain can reorganize itself after injury so that when nerve cells die, their functions are taken over by other cells.

CSMC’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers three kinds of In-Motion robots for patient rehabilitation: a shoulder-elbow robot for improving shoulder and elbow control, a wrist robot, and a hand robot for grasping, releasing and pinching exercises.

“We are happy to bring this newest advance in rehabilitation treatment to the country,” commented Atty. Pilar Nenuca Almira, president and chief executive officer of CSMC. “We’ve seen how robotic therapy has helped our patients improve their quality of lives and we hope to bring that same experience to more patients in need of rehabilitation.”

For more information on CSMC’s In-Motion Robotic therapy, visit www.cardinalsantos.com.ph.
