    Unboxing the Lumia 920

Nokia has always made devices that are great in the hand and give excellent performance. We’ve never been disappointed by their phones, and their flagship ones are among the best phones you can buy. The Lumia 920 is no exception. It looks great on paper and during the launch, and we had been waiting for it for a while. It’s finally here, and you get to take a look at it with us.

The box is their typical blue slidey-out deal that’s par for the course for the Finnish brand now. Inside is the Lumia 920, wrapped in a nice shiny plastic cover, sitting on its little tray, with the pin for removing the sim cart tray.

Lifting the tray reveals the micro USB cable, charger, and a pair of nice red headphones that are not currently in the shot. (we’ll post that in a bit)

The polycarbonate body is great, and the phone feels solid with no sharp edges to speak of. It is a device that you know is top-tier and will likely outlast its owner. The device sent over is a very nice shade of red, less “Iron Man” and closer to a shade of orange. Very pretty, in our opinion. The screen is a nice curved glass with smooth edges. The phone very much feels like a smooth pebble; extremely smooth and pleasant to hold.

The screen is clear and very crisp, though if you move it quickly, you get the slightest hint of the screen refreshing. It’s not a problem though, and should barely be noticeable after a while. The phone of course runs Windows Phone 8, which is, in my opinion, one of the better-looking OSs in the market today. It’s great on such a simple, elegant device such as the Lumia.

The keys are black, which goes witht he color scheme very well, and have a very positive feel to them. The top keys are for volume, the bottom one in the shot is for power, and under my thumb is the camera button.

I have a feeling this will be another great review for Nokia, so stay tuned; we’ll have more for you in the coming weeks!

    The Galaxy Note 8.0: A quick Hands-on

    1

Last night, we got a little time with the latest member of Samsung’s Note family, the Note 8.0. It’s a handy little device that’s meant to take the place of quite a few thing we use on a daily basis. It’s a notebook, a planner, a calendar, an ebook reader and a portable media device on top of its features as a mobile phone. It gains additional functionality thanks to its included S-Pen. After a quick intro, the units were handed out. The devices had already been released from their cardboard packaging, so we can’t really do a full unboxing for you, but we can give you a quick run-through of some of the useful functions of the device, but first, the specs:

    Connectivity:

    • 2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    • 3G: HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
    • Micro-SIM
    • Dimensions: 210.8 x 135.9 x 8 mm (8.30 x 5.35 x 0.31 in)
    • Weight: 338 g
    • Screen: TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors, 800 x 1280 pixels, 8.0 inches (~189 ppi pixel density)
    • Storage: GB storage, Expandable via microSD
    • CPU: 1.6GHz, Dual-core Cortex-A9
    • GPU: Mali-400MP
    • Memory: 2GB
    • Camera: 5 MP, 2592х1944 pixels, autofocus, Secondary: 1.3MP
    • OS: Android v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)
    • GPS: Yes, with A-GPS support and GLONASS
    • Battery: Non-removable Li-Ion 4600 mAh battery

It’s a pretty capable device under the hood, and it showed when we were using it. The whole experience was buttery-smooth and did not have the slightest hint of stutter, even as we were doing some heavy multitasking involving video playback. This 8-incher is very comfortable and has a very familiar feel in the hand. It really is the right size for a tablet, in my opinion, offering the best balance between portability and screen real estate.

The screen is a crisp TFT, with a pixel density of 189 DPI, which might not be HD-quality, but still retains plenty of sharpness and vividness. There were a few videos on the device already, so we were able to give video watching a shot, and we were generally quite pleased with the results.

The Note 8.0 comes with a lot of the same software features as the previous Note devices, and it has to be said that multi-window interface is so much more useful on a large screen. You also have the ability to take digital clippings of anything you see on-screen thanks to the pen, and handwriting recognition to boot.

The biggest feature of the Note is the included S-Pen. It brings a whole level of functionality that isn’t usually available on other mini-sized tablets.

You get enhanced scheduling abilities thanks to aNote and the Note’s calendar app,

The ability to annotate and highlight ebooks

use symbols as commands to activate searches, send messages or search the ‘net

hover the pen over content to see subfolders and other stories

Take impressively artsy photos via the Paper Cam app

and annotate photos like you would a traditional photo print.

It also gives you a few unique connectivity options thanks to WiFi direct abilities that make synchronized sharing photos, videos and even presentations easier than crowding around a single device.

This is just the surface of what you can do with the Galaxy Note 8.0. We don’t have a unit of our own just yet, so we can’t give you the full lab experience, but stay tuned. We’ll have more for you once we do!

Los Angeles Times employs “robot reporter”

    0

Technology has enabled cultures and societies to do the most work in as little time as possible. Before Google, we had to look things up in libraries, going through thousands upon thousands of pages of text and shuffling through drawers of catalogs. Before Facebook, we had to seek out friends and family through the phone book or through word of mouth. Before the wheel, we had to use our own two feet to get from point A to point B.

Now, technology has advanced to the point where I could write an algorithm that could possibly write this entire post for me, and no one would be the wiser. That’s what journalist Ken Schwencke is doing—instead of personally composing articles for publication, he developed a set of step-by-step instructions that can take a stream of data, compile the data into a pre-determined structure, then format it for publication. Schwencke’s algorithm works with earthquake statistics, since he lives in California.

Schwencke can go to bed at night knowing his work is being done overnight, and thus increase his productivity using the power of technology. He won’t have to spend late nights at the office or even look at a computer screen or touch a keyboard after he gets the algorithm running. He could then allot that time to doing what he personally wants while getting things done. “I doubt that people who read our (web) posts—unless they religiously read the earthquake posts and realize they almost universally follow the same pattern—would notice,” Schwencke said. “I don’t think most people are thinking that robots are writing the news.”

Algorithms are interesting pieces of technology—they are very versatile and can do many things. Auto-correct, the thing on your smartphones that may save or embarrass you when you’re texting your friends and family, uses an algorithm to figure out what you’re trying to say next. Remember those chess grand masters that played computers in chess? Those computers also use algorithms to determine their next move. “Algorithms can be highly complex computer codes or relatively simple mathematical formulas. They can even sometimes function as a recipe of sorts, or a set of repeatable steps, designed to perform a specific function. In this case, the algorithm functions to derive and compose coherent news stories from a stream of data,” said Jamie Dwyer, who provides IT support to Environment Canada.

“The use of algorithms on routine news tasks frees up professional reporters to make phone calls, do actual interviews, or dig through sophisticated reports and complex data, instead of compiling basic information such as dates, times and locations. It lightens the load for everybody involved,” Schwencke said. But, like many things involving technology, there are questions about the ethics of having an algorithm do all the work for you, and many journalists and academics have weighed in on the topic.

“Algorithms, like human beings, need to decide what is worth including, and make judgments on newsworthiness,” said Alfred Hermida, who teaches a course in social media at the University of British Columbia. “If the journalist has essentially built that algorithm with those values, then it is their work,” Hermida said. “All the editorial decisions were made by the reporter, but they were made by the reporter in an algorithm.”

“Many of the algorithms we encounter everyday exist in a black box of sorts, in which we see the results, but do not understand the process. Understanding how the algorithms work is really important to how we understand the information,” Hermida added.

Like earthquake statistics, sports statistics may be an area where something similar to Schwencke’s algorithm can thrive. “Baseball may be a good avenue for news algorithms, because the game is heavy with statistics,” said Paul Knox, an associate professor for the School of Journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto. “But even if an algorithm can analyze and manipulate data fairly well, journalism is still based on not only filtering, but also finding other available information, and a mathematical construct lacks the ability to dig up new facts or add context,” he notes.

Ben Welsh, a co-worker of Schwencke’s at the Times, also gave his opinion on the use of algorithms to write articles. “People are already reading automated data reports that come to them, and they don’t think anything of it,” he said. Welsh also mentioned smartphone apps that display personalized weather based on the owner’s location. “That’s a case where I don’t think anyone really blinks,” Welsh said. “It’s just a kind of natural computerization and personalization of a data report that had been done in a pretty standard way by newspapers for probably a century.”

Welsh, however, warned that algorithms should not completely replace the human journalist. “Responsibility for accuracy falls where it always has: with publications, and with individual journalists. The key thing is just to be honest and transparent with your readers, like always,” he said. “I think that whether you write the code that writes the news or you write it yourself, the rules are still the same. You need to respect your reader. You need to be transparent with them, you need to be as truthful as you can… all the fundamentals of journalism just remain the same.”

“Ultimately, it’s not about the tool,” said Lisa Taylor, a lawyer and journalist who teaches ethics at Ryerson University. “At (the algorithms’) very genesis, we have human judgment. Using algorithms ethically and reasonably shouldn’t be difficult; the onus is on the reporter to decide which tools to use and how to use them properly,” she continued.

“The complicating factor here is a deep suspicion journalists and news readers have that any technological advancement is going to be harnessed purely for its cost-cutting abilities,” Taylor added. “How can we use this effectively, reasonably, and in a way that honors the (tenets) of journalism?”

The Car Awards Group, Inc. is getting ready to reveal the 2012-2013 Car of the Year – Philippines at the Awards Night on April 4 at the 2013 Manila International Auto Show.

The 2012-2013 round of tests is one of the biggest yet, with 80 of the latest models competing for 20 different automobile categories.

“We’re very excited to reveal the next Philippine Car Of The Year,” said Ferman Lao, President of the Car Awards Group, Inc. “It’s been a busy year with so many new models to be awarded as winners in their respective categories.”

CAGI members, motoring journalists from various publications and media outfits, conducted a series of test fests based at the Eton Centris Walk for the qualitative rounds. The test fests serve to provide each tester a feel for how each model fares in everyday driving.

After the Metro Manila test fests, CAGI’s tech team spent 4 days at the Clark International Speedway for the technical testing. Using equipment provided by technology partner SpeedLab, they were able to measure how each model performed in a series of acceleration, braking, and cornering exercises..

Utilizing the combined results of the qualitative and instrumented tests, CAGI then determines the winners in their respective classes ranging from entry level all the way up to premium and luxury brands.

“There can only be one Car Of The Year, and that winner will be revealed when the 2013 Manila International Auto Show opens at the World Trade Center on April 4,” said Lao.

The 2012 – 2013 Car Of The Year Philippines awards is presented by the Manila International Auto Show and is supported by the Clark International Speedway, Caltex with Techron, Eton Centris Walk, Standard Insurance, BOSCH, RCBC Savings Auto Loans, Victoria Court, Dole Juice Drinks, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts & Coffee, MG Madrid & Co., Winner Graphics, Automobile Association Philippines and SpeedLab.

The Car Awards Group, Inc. is supported by media partners Philippine Daily Inquirer, The Philippine Star, BusinessWorld, The Manila Bulletin, The Daily Tribune, BusinessMirror, The Manila Times, Malaya Business Insight, Sunshine Television, AutoReview, StoplightTV, AutoIndustriya.com, Kotse.com, Top Gear Philippines, Speed Magazine, Manila Standard Today, Jam 88.3, C! Three majestic churches that you can drive to this Holy Week

Getting out of the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila is something individuals and families do during Holy Week—and for some families, this also means a trip to one of the many scenic churches throughout the Philippines. Robert Bosch Inc. gives some tips and tricks on how to make the out-of-town drive as smooth as possible.

First, check the body of your car and its core before leaving the house, and drop by your local Bosch Car Service workshop for professional maintenance and repair. All Bosch Service Centers are fully equipped with industry-leading facilities and experts to help you diagnose every component of your vehicle so it is prepared for the road.

For those who don’t want to venture too far out, you can visit the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, or the Malolos Cathedral, in Malolos, Bulacan. The cathedral’s beauty echoes Greek and Roman accents that have survived many restorations throughout the years. People from around the Philippines come to the Malolos Cathedral to celebrate life, faith and tradition. Your car’s injection system is responsible for distributing fuel and energy to your vehicle, so to save cash and time, make sure you watch your fuel consumption regularly. Bosch’s Lambda Sensors are proven to ensure fuel consumption savings even while you’re on the move.

For those taking a longer trip, you can visit the St. Augustine Church, or Bantay Church in Ilocos Sur. It was rebuilt in the 1950s after World War II. It has vaulted ceilings and pointed arches, which are common features of neo-Gothic architecture. There is also a brick-made bell tower that has withstood the test of time near the church. Many go to Bantay Church not only for the religious experience, but also for the historical exposure that both children and adults will enjoy. Bantay Church is located five hours away from Manila, so you can avoid engine break down by powering up your starting and ignition systems, and checking or replacing your sparking material and ignition coil before hitting the road. Bosch has many high-performance spark plugs, ignition circuits, ignition coils and plastic marten protection pipes to ensure your travel is hassle-free.

For the most adventurous travelers, you can visit San Jose Church in Ivana-Basco, Batanes. The church represents Filipino craftsmanship and spirit with its modern exterior and ornaments, and also has withstood the test of time and the elements. The church also fronts the Ivana Seaport, which gives tourists a perfect view of the sea and landscape. The church is located 659 km from Manila. Your vehicle’s security in public places is a top priority. Today’s new innovations have made today’s delicate car parts tamper-proof. You can outfit your car with Bosch’s Vehicle Security System to ensure that your car is safe. Its Grade A central locking and alarm systems will allow you and your family to have peace of mind.

HP announces new Cloud Builder programs

HP has announced their two new builder programs meant to aid their partners in expanding cloud practices, generating new revenue opportunities, and leveraging HP Cloud Services, the company’s public cloud. The two new programs, namely the public cloud partner program for global system integrators (GSIs) and the public cloud partner program for value-added resellers (VARs)—are initially available in private beta. HP claims that by adopting these programs, partners will be able to drive greater profitability and innovation for their customers.

The public cloud partner program for GSIs enables partners to provide consulting services, build applications or resell services leveraging HP Cloud Services. The program provides partners with tools for the rapid transition of customers to the cloud. Program members have access to designated cloud testing environments, collaborative go-to market opportunities, and sales, tech and support resources for expanding public cloud practices. HP is currently working with global financial services firm Deloitte Consulting LLP and tech consulting and outsourcing provider Infosys to help partners solve complex business problems and ensure financial growth.

The builder program for VARs, meanwhile, rewards partners for either referring customers to HP Cloud Services or maintaining long-term relationships with annuity-based commissions. Through this program, VARs and channel partners are given assistance in capturing new markets and attracting customers through HP training, co-branding opportunities and marketing tools. HP states that in summer 2013, they will be expanding the program to provide financial incentives for channel partners reselling HP Cloud Services.

HP has also augmented its cloud service with three new private beta “as a service” offerings that support a reliable application infrastructure and enable customers to achieve rapid business results. These are: HP Cloud Monitoring, which helps users identify potential issues; HP Cloud Load Balancer, which optimizes application response time and reduces IT management costs by distributing web traffic across multiple servers; and HP Cloud DNS, which provides easy access to a global DNS service by translating domain names to IP addresses using a global network of servers.

Petron Lakbay Alalay: Your Best Travel Buddy

    0

Anyone handling a four-wheeled vehicle cannot afford to go places without a travel buddy. Whether it’s a short journey or a long distance trip, a travel buddy will always help you keep your concentration on what’s ahead, remind you of the rules of the road, and help you keep your vehicle travel-worthy.

It is in this spirit that Petron proudly unveils this year’s Petron Lakbay Alalay program. Well-loved as the longest running motorist assistance program in the country, Petron Lakbay Alalay, now on its 27th year, doesn’t just involve itself with helping stranded motorists during long calendar breaks (such as the Holy Week stretch and All Souls’ Day/All Saints Day). Petron Lakbay Alalay now is a series of activities spread year-round to help the motorists and communities.

The first part is meant for motorists’ safety. Billeted as Lakbay Alalay Para Sa Kaligtasan, Petron tapped 162 of its nationwide stations to offer free safety checks to motorists’ vehicles —even weeks before the start of the Holy Week—to ensure the safety of travelers. These safety checks are a gentle reminder that small details, such as topping up your vehicle’s fluids before long distance runs, should never go unnoticed. However, should someone on the road need vehicular assistance, participating Petron stations tote emergency services (including towing) for any and all four-wheelers. Plus, with partner companies, these pit stops also offer free items like snacks and giveaways to customers. As a consistent attention-getter to motorists, Petron will display safety road safety pointers through Petron Lakbay Alalay messages on banners and streamers in all highways. For those staying at home, Petron will go to various communities, performing liquid petroleum gas (LPG) leak checks and conducting LPG home safety seminars.

The second part is known as Lakbay Alalay Para Sa Kalusugan, meant to ensure that the person behind the wheel and those riding with the driver also get assistance. Participating Petron stations for the Holy Week and Undas (the All Souls’ Day/All Saints Day combo) will offer medical emergency services. And to further promote this second phase, a Petron Lakbay Alalay “Run For Safety” marathon will be done in Manila and Cebu to highly encourage healthy living.

The third part is called Lakbay Alalay Para Sa Kalikasan, meant to remind everybody that a travel buddy cares about his or her surroundings. In select areas, Petron will have first an environmental plight awareness sticker campaign, followed by tree planting programs as a gesture of care for mother nature. Plus, a free trash bin promo will be implemented at participating stations to increase the drive for no littering.

Another integral element is the information drive in collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH), and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). This joint endeavor is meant to promote healthy lifestyle, how to rid your area of dengue threats, and increase awareness for DOST’s “Project Noah”. Petron supports the ‘Stop Dengue Now’ campaign of DOST promoting its Mosquito Ovicidal/Larvicidal trap or O-L Trap which is a simple yet effective anti-dengue device. You can visit the DOST booth at Petron NLEX and SLEX to know more about this or access through mobile app for Android smartphones. Petron is also a partner of DOST in ‘Project Noah – Alamin Ang Kalagayan ng Panahon’, a real-time weather forecast system. The information campaign will also impart to motorists travel reminders on inclement weather conditions, calamity readiness and emergency contact details.  Visit www.noah.dost.gov.ph for more details of Project Noah.

In all these activations, Petron employees serve as volunteers offering their time and energy in the service of others, and with a pledge to practice and promote safe and responsible motoring.

Petron also acknowledges and is thankful to the following partners and supporters for making the Petron Lakbay Alalay a success: Goodyear, Philippine National Red Cross, Honda Cars Makati, Chevrolet, Kia, San Mig Coffee, Purefoods Hotdog, Magnolia Pure Water, Wi-Tribe, Bank of Commerce, Timezone, Summit Media, Grolier and Primer Group.

2013 also marks Petron’s 80th year. In celebration, Petron is giving thanks to customers through offering various promotions and rewards. To kick off the dubbed ‘Road to 80 Rewards’ program, Petron offers the “Win Fuel for a Year” e-raffle promo for the Petron Value Card (PVC) holders. At participating stations, customers also get to enjoy the ‘Libreng kape at balita’ promo, free magazine and free ice cream. Customers should watch out for more of these freebies, promotions and activities at Petron stations in the coming months as rewards to its growing clientele.

This extensive approach of Petron Lakbay Alalay program makes sure that motorists have the best travel buddy for any trip year-round. After all, Petron is your ‘Lakbay Alalay’.

Truck models power Isuzu’s growth in the Philippines and Japan

    0

Isuzu Philippines Corporation’s (IPC) lineup of light, medium, and heavy duty trucks has grown in the first two months of 2013. The rise has also reflected the feat accomplished by Isuzu Motors Ltd. (IML) in its home market of Japan.

According to the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines and the Truck Manufacturers Association, sales of IPC’s medium and heavy duty trucks rose 21.1 percent in January and February 2013 (46 units) against the same period in 2012 (38 units). IPC also sold 269 units of its N-Series light-duty truck in January and February 2013, up 27.5 percent from the same period last year.

In 2012, the N-Series sold 1,630 units, a 36 percent rise from 2011. This was also the N-Series’ best sales total since 1996. It also retained its top spot as the best-selling light-duty commercial truck in the Philippines for 14 years. “For decades, the market has placed its demand on Isuzu trucks because of their known strengths,” IPC President Ryoji Yamazaki said. “These strengths—durable, reliable, fuel-efficient—are key to Isuzu trucks earning their reputation as dependable business partners. These workhorses are not only invaluable to the various enterprises they serve but are true contributors to the country’s economy.”

Also contributing to IPC’s sales is the Crosswind AUV, which sold 1,006 units in the first two months of 2013, up from 987 units from the same period in 2012. The flagship Alterra SUV sold 68 units in February compared to January (35 units), a 94.3 percent increase. The D-MAX also sold well to kick off 2013, selling 220 units in February, a 107.5 percent increase from January (106 units).

The strong performance of Isuzu’s truck models in the Philippine market reflects its dominance in the Japanese market. The N-Series has commanded a 39.6 percent share in Japan’s two and three ton payload segment last year. The N-Series has led this category in the Japanese market for 12 straight years, and all but one year since 1970.

Isuzu’s F-Series medium-duty trucks as well as the C&E Series heavy-duty trucks have also captured a combined 34.9 percent share of the four ton payload segment in the Japanese market in 2012. The models have returned to the top spot in this category for the first time since 2010. Combined with the results of the N-Series, Isuzu also emerged as Japan’s top-selling brand among all trucks from two ton payloads. Bolstering IML’s performance in its domestic market are Isuzu’s buses, which secured a 35.8 percent share among models that can seat 30 or more passengers in 2012. Isuzu models last held the top spot 44 years ago.

“Isuzu’s success is not only the result of the highly durable, value-added vehicles we produce,” said IML Executive Vice President Ryozo Tsukioka. “It also reflects the united efforts of Isuzu personnel in all departments—including sales, service and parts—to become Number One.”
