Dell’s Project Ophelia puts a whole computer on a stick

    projectophelia

Laptops, smartphones, and tablets are getting thinner. PCs are getting smaller. There’s no doubt we’ve come a long way from having computers fill up entire rooms a generation ago. Dell is also following suit by fitting an entire computer onto a stick the size of a USB flash drive.

The PC on a stick, titled Project Ophelia, was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). It plugs into any monitor or TV’s HDMI port and will run on the Android OS (most likely Jelly Bean), thus making the device into a full-fledged PC. It will have WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity so that you can still use any Bluetooth enabled keyboard and mouse and access the Internet.

According to Jeff McNaught, executive director of cloud client computing at Dell, you can do everything on the device that you could also do on any Android device, such as surf the web, download apps, movies and TV from the Google Play store, and play Android games. In addition, the company is working on a keyboard-like technology for users to type when Ophelia is docked to a screen.

Ophelia will also come with Wyse’s PocketCloud, which allows users to access files stored on PCs, servers or mobile devices. “We’ve done a number of things in the software of the product and outside that will make it interesting,” McNaught said.

The very first units of Ophelia will ship to Android developers so that they can write and code apps for the device. In August, it will be available via cable companies or telecom providers that may want to offer it with cable packages or data plans. Shortly after, it will be available to consumers on Dell’s website for US$100 (around Php 4,100).

Dell is also pitching Ophelia to business consumers. A set of features will allow IT administrators to manage and secure the device. For example, it could be wiped clean if it is lost due to its connectivity with the cloud. The feature set, called Cloud Client Manager, will allow system administrators to see where users are and what they are doing with Ophelia. “We want to make sure when we release the product that it’s perfect. The enterprise is one market we understand,” McNaught said.

Yahoo acquires Tumblr, promises “not to screw it up”

    ytImage from Digital Trends

There have been rumors of it since last week, and now, it has finally been confirmed that Yahoo has, in fact, acquired Tumblr through much-awaited (or dreaded) official statements from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer and Tumblr CEO David Karp .

It has been revealed that Yahoo acquired the social-blogging platform for the price of one (1) billion USD in cash as an attempt to capture the 18- to 24-year-old demographic.

So what changes should we expect now that Tumblr belongs to Yahoo? Should we get used to calling it Yumblr now?

In the announcement posted in their new blog, www.yahoo.tumblr.com, Mayer herself reassured the public that Tumblr will continue to operate independently as a separate business and that Karp will remain CEO. Karp, meanwhile, attempted to hose down the uproar of unhappy Tumblr users with his official statement on the Tumblr Staff blog: “We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission—to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deservecertainly isn’t changing.”

“Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same—and we still have a long way to go!—but with more resources to draw from,” he added.

Mayer revealed that Tumblr will be able to deploy Yahoo’s personalization technology and search infrastructure to enhance users’ content-discovery experience. She also claimed that the two companies will be working together to create better advertising opportunities.

To those who aren’t convinced of Yahoo’s intentions, Mayer promises in her announcement that Yahoo won’t “screw it up.”

“Tumblr is incredibly special and has a great thing going,” she said, “The product roadmap, their team, their wit and irreverence will all remain the same as well their mission to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve.”

LG Optimus L Series II debuts in the Philippines along with new brand ambassadors

    lgoptimuslseriesII

Consumer electronics giant LG has launched their new Optimus L Series II in the Philippines. The second generation of the widely successful Optimus L Style Series is considered a bolder version of its predecessor, which is known for its sleek and stylish designs coupled with advanced Android technology. The original L Style Series units sold more than 10 million units in 10 months.

The L Series II, which is composed of the L3 II, L5 II, and L7 II, will have four new design elements. These include a seamless layout that blends graceful contours and solid edges for a better grasp of your device; a laser cut contour that wraps the uni-body design with fine details and a slimming look; a radiant rear design which gives the unit a simple and clean front that naturally flows into the back casing; and smart LED lighting on the Home button which emits a subtle glow for an intimate yet edgy look.

“The L Series II celebrates LG’s rich design heritage complemented by new and updated functional innovations. The design philosophy focuses on timeless and progressive designs that seamlessly fit into the contemporary lifestyle of our users,” said Nina Gregorius, marketing manager for LG Mobile Communications.

Other than the new aesthetics, the L Series II also has an expanded set of user features, such as an expanded set of features, including additions to QuickMemo, Quick Button and Safety Care. QuickMemo allows users to capture and share handwritten ideas with others using a fingertip. Quick Button enables users to personalize a hotkey to launch apps such as the camera, browser, music player or QuickMemo. Safety Care gives users three options—emergency call forwarding, a phone non-usage notice and a My Location notice—all of which can be programmed to contact family or friends in case of an emergency.

The Cheese Shutter is a voice activated camera trigger that eliminates the need to push a button to take photos. It can work with any pre-defined command on both the front and rear cameras, so you can take photos spontaneously that can be missed if one has to look for the trigger button. The user experience is also enhanced with the HD IPS display and extended capacity battery, so you can enjoy the features of your LG phone longer between charges. The L3 II, L5 II, and L7 II will also have dual SIM models, so those who have friends and family on multiple networks can call them without incurring any additional charges.

LG also introduced three new celebrities that will promote the brand. Actor/model/singer Paulo Avelino is the new face of LG Mobile. Actress/model/blogger Maxene Magalona and Ateneo Blue Eagles point guard and model Kiefer Ravena are the new brand ambassadors for the Optimus L Series II.

“Paulo, Maxene and Kiefer represent a dynamic vibe which is what the L Series II is all about. They are young, successful, go-getting individuals and they embody the kind of brilliance and confidence that defines our product,” Gregorius said. “Our new L Series II lineup is the product of a careful research and design process which reflects contemporary aesthetics and innovations that reflect our rich design heritage and strong position as a global technology leader. The first generation Optimus L Style Series has helped us gain solid ground in the mobile landscape and we are confident that we can keep that momentum.”

Samsung also introduced two new printers designed for the needs of small businesses—the Samsung Xpress and Pro Xpress printers—that are capable of printing wirelessly from your smartphone or tablet. They can print up to 30 pages per minute, are capable of duplex printing, and can automatically sharpen the focus of both graphics and text by eliminating white gaps within solid characters. They utilize polymerized toners, which have smaller and more uniform particles than conventional toners, thus producing vivid colors, more defined lines and a lesser chance of fading.

Sonic the Hedgehog makes his Android debut, switches sides to Nintendo on consoles

    sonicteam

Many gamers will know our fast blue hedgehog friend—especially veterans of the SEGA Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast consoles. Now Android gamers will be pleased to know that Sonic is now available on the Google Play Store so you can get in some classic gaming on your Android device. For the small price of US$2.99 (Php 120), you can now play Sonic the Hedgehog on any Android device.

But the real news is this shocker—Sonic is now going to be exclusive to Nintendo consoles, something once thought unthinkable by console gamers, as Sega and Nintendo were bitter rivals during the console wars of the 1990s. In the long run, Nintendo won as SEGA stopped producing consoles and started focusing on software, but Sonic continued to appear on other consoles frequently while not owing any allegiance to a single console. Sonic made appearances on the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo consoles such as the Wii and the Wii U. Sonic has also made appearances on handheld consoles and mobile devices, such as the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation VITA, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo 3DS.

“Sonic the Hedgehog has proven incredibly successful on Nintendo platforms and we are pleased to continue our long-standing relationship with Nintendo,” said John Cheng, President & COO of SEGA of America. “As we initiate this new exclusive partnership with the next three titles we believe that Wii U and Nintendo 3DS are ideal platforms to showcase the evolution of the Sonic brand.” Sonic made his debut in 1991 and quickly became SEGA’s mascot in order to compete with Nintendo’s Mario character.

“The onetime rivalry between Mario and Sonic has grown into a friendship that has never been closer,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “These announcements in conjunction with SEGA demonstrate the commitment we have to bringing great games to the Wii U platform, and set the stage for our upcoming announcements at E3.”

Mashable teaches potential Google Glass owners some futuristic eyewear etiquette in their recently released faux public service announcement (PSA) entitled “Don’t be a Glasshole”.

The video guide features the various signs that indicate that a certain Google Glass user is a certified Glasshole. The list includes cheating at trivia games, trying to pick up women with talks of X-Ray vision, using the camera to take inappropriate pictures of your date, and having them on while you’re inside the restroom. Hilarious, yet true. No one likes Glasshole, folks.

Geoguessr: Getting lost has never been this fun (and addictive)

    0

Screen Shot 2013-05-19 at 12.37.58 AM

Imagine waking up covered in dust, clothes all tattered, smelling like you haven’t had a proper shower in days, and dripping in cold sweat. You sit up and find yourself in the middle of an open road. As you survey your surroundings, it dawns on you—you’re not in Kansas (or wherever you’re from) anymore. No signs or markers are in sight, and you’ll have to wander around to figure out where you are.

Essentially, that’s how Geoguessr works. It’s a game built on Google Maps where the player is dropped off in a random location and the objective is to guess where you are. The thing is, you can be anywhere, as Geoguessr will be able to zap you into anywhere in the world. You score points for your guess and you get five rounds. It’s fun and frustrating at the same time, and that’s probably why it’s highly addictive (With the number of times I’ve played this game today, I think I’ve been in each of the seven continents at least once).

Go forth and play, virtual explorer. Head over to www.geoguessr.com.

Play Atari Breakout on Google Images Search!

Screen Shot 2013-05-19 at 12.06.47 AM

Google celebrates 37 years of the classic Atari game, Breakout, by planting another Easter egg. This time, it lets users play the game directly on Google Image Search.

When you type “Atari Breakout” in the search bar under Images, each thumbnail turns a particular color of the rainbow and warps into the shape of a brick. The colored bricks then rearrange themselves into rows, and out comes the ball you use to smash them, along with the moving paddle you use to bounce it back.

Head over to Google Image Search and try it out yourself!

    Breakout Trivia

    • Based on the 1972 arcade game, PongBreakout was created in 1976 by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow.
    • Breakout was later ported to video game consoles.
    • In 2011, Atari SA released a mobile version of the game called Breakout Boost.
    • The game was a direct influence to Steve Wozniak in making the design for the Apple II PC.
    • The original iPod had an Easter egg where the game would appear onscreen whenever the central button was held down for a few seconds in the About menu.

HP rolls out the world’s first commercially available HP Moonshot system to realize enterprise growth via delivering new infrastructure economics and supporting web-hosting workloads. (In photo: Veronica Escalante, Category Manager, Industry Standard Servers and Software, Enterprise Group, HP Philippines)

The Internet is a wonderful thing, and possibly one of the greatest inventions we have come up with as a race. It is the repository of our collective knowledge, allows us to talk with family across the globe, watch shows that have long since faded from the airwaves and basically make magic happen wherever we may find ourselves. What most people don’t realize is that for every Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and Twitter out there, there are loads and loads of servers humming quietly in the background, making the magic happen. These servers require power, space, and other resources. So far, these traditional, general-purpose servers have been doing an okay job, but these servers, when scaled to our projected future needs, won’t be sustainable. By 2016, more server space will be needed amounting to about USD 20 Billion in build costs and eight to ten new powerplants will have to be built. That’s enough power for two million american homes. The current hardware just isn’t sustainable.

HP has seen this coming. They spent time, effort and research hours to develop Project Moonshot, the world’s first software-defined servers. These servers are tailor-made to handle highly specific tasks, and can therefore be constructed to be eight times more efficient, take up 80% less space , use almost 90% less energy than a general purpose server for the same task, and cost 77% less. This takes the modularity of the traditional racks to a new level, allowing one chassis to support up to 45 servers, with each one fully capable of doing that task for which it was designed. This also allows servers to be much more earth-friendly. HP engineers have calculated that replacing 100,000 traditional servers with the appropriate Moonshot devices is equivalent to retiring 18,000 cars.

The current generation of Moonshot servers are designed to handle Dedicated hosting, with subsequent variants tailored for analytics, telco services, gaming, FSI and FPGA tasks.

“With nearly 10 billion devices connected to the Internet, and predictions for exponential growth, we’ve reached a point where the space, power and cost demands of traditional technology are no longer sustainable,” said Meg Whitman, president and Chief Executive Officer, HP “HP Moonshot marks the beginning of a new style of IT that will change the infrastructure economics and lay the foundation for the next 20 billion devices.”

The HP Moonshot system consists of the HP Moonshot 1500 enclosure and application-optimized HP ProLiant Moonshot servers. These servers will offer processors from multiple HP partners, each targeting a specific workload.

With support for up to 1,800 servers per rack, HP Moonshot servers occupy one-eighth of the space required by traditional servers. This offers a compelling solution to the problem of physical data center space.(3) Each chassis shares traditional components including the fabric, HP Integrated Lights-Out (iLo) management, power supply and cooling fans. These shared components reduce complexity as well as add to the reduction in energy use and space.
