The Samsung Galaxy S4: An unboxing

    0

We at the Gadgets Magazine HQ have been waiting for Samsung’s latest and greatest to arrive at the lab for weeks now, but because of the demand for the device, it seems that they have been a little hard to come by. This afternoon, though, one happened to have landed on my lap, and you get to share the joy with us.

    Behold. The Samsung Galaxy S4.

    DSC_0071[1]

Well, the box, at least. The box is a very tiny, understated, recycled deal, and we rather like it. Nothing fancy, nothing terribly special. Once you tear into it though, you see the S4 itself, taking up most of the inside.

    DSC_0072[1]

The phone itself has been called plasticky by some who have had the chance to hold it. That is a little true; it’s a little light for the size, but it feels solid. Nowhere near as toy-like as some people make it seem. It’s no aluminum unibody, for sure, but it’s pleasantly rigid, and not creaky at all.

    DSC_0077

We got the black model, whose back panel is covered in a nice, shiny, dark metal finish, despite being plastic. It lends to giving the S4 a more solid look than plain white, and works very well to make it feel like the top-tier device it is.

    DSC_0075[1]

The bezel is very thin, and the front of the device is almost completely screen. It makes it look larger than it really is, despite actually being a little thinner than the old SIII.
    DSC_0078

The phone is also quite thin. Not so thin as to make handling it difficult, and just thin enough so that it disappears nicely into a pocket.

    DSC_0080

The screen is large, gorgeous and sharp and one of the best screens we have laid eyes on in the history of mobile devices. This is going to be a great phone on which to watch videos, view pictures and browse websites.

    DSC_0079

It doesn’t come with very much else, just a few documents, a simple wall charger and cable, and a nice set of isolating headphones. We’ll really be putting this phone through its paces, so stick around for updates on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Ford wins Best Traditional-To-Mobile Transition Award

    0

    fordsync

Ford Motor Company was awarded the “Best Traditional-to-Mobile Transition” award at the Global Mobile Internet Conference (GMIC), Asia’s largest and most influential industry event, for its in-car connectivity technology. The event was held in Beijing from May 7-8, and brought industry leaders from across Asia and other parts of the world, which included global Internet and mobile companies, entrepreneurs, and new mobile startups.

GMC organizers said that Ford’s award-winning SYNC system and SYNC AppLink program, which are both powered by Microsoft, will fundamentally change the way people consume mobile services and products in their cars. Ford, in addition to being the only automaker that exhibited at the GMIC this year, is also the first automaker and first company from a traditional industry to receive an award from the GMIC.

The Ford stand featured the new Ford Focus, which is equipped with the SYNC system and SYNC AppLink. SYNC is Ford’s voice-activated hands-free-in-car communications and infotainment system for mobile phones and other digital media players that allows the driver to make and receive calls and play music from digital devices, helping the driver focus on the road. Sync AppLink is a feature which gives drivers voice control of smartphone apps.

“We’re extremely proud to receive this award, which recognises the ground-breaking work the Ford team is doing in technology,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific. “At Ford, we consider ourselves to be not just an auto company, but also a technology company. We are delivering class-leading in-car technologies to customers around the world, including technologies which enable our customers to stay connected in a simple and safe way while driving.”

“At Ford, we are committed to bringing the best global technologies to our customers and making them user-friendly,” Galhotra said. “SYNC and SYNC AppLink deliver value to our customers through smart and convenient features that help keep them connected to their digital lives in a safer, simpler and smarter way.”

Because Ford wants all the Mamas to be safe

    Ford_Pregnant

Safety is a top priority when it comes to designing cars at Ford. And with safety, they don’t only mean the safety of adults and their kids, but also those who are expecting and the unborn.

Ford engineers and designers go to great lengths to understand the driving constraints women face while being pregnant — to the point of donning a “Pregnancy Suit” which features belly weight inserts, a six-pound pouch that applies pressure to the bladder, and compartments for water and ball bearings to mimic mild fetal movement. While the suit will never really make them feel how it is to carry a child in their bellies, it does give them a better perspective about the special and spatial requirements and limitations that the demographic has, and surely contributes to a better overall design.

Here are the tips that expecting moms (and dads!) will surely find useful when travelling by car:

    • Wear your seatbelt correctly — Make sure that your seatbelt is positioned below your abdomen, across your hips. The shoulder strap should be between your breasts, and make sure to tug on the bet to make sure it’s nice and snug.
    • Move back — Move your seat back to a comfortable distance when you are driving. Reclining the seat slightly can also help. Doing this will protect your stomach in the even of airbag deployment.
    • Support your back — If you have pregnancy related back pain, place a small circular back pillow to support your lower back or use a rolled up towel. This will help increase comfort while you’re driving.
    • Take a break — If you’re driving for a lengthy period, take regular breaks to increase blood flow to your feet. Feet and ankles are prone to swelling and it can worsen by sitting for long periods. Take a break to gently move your feet around, rotate your ankles, and wiggle your toes.
    • Be the passenger — When possible be a passenger. Sitting in the backseat is the safest spot in the car for an expectant mother. If you sit in the front seat, make sure to push the seat back as far as you can to protect yourself from airbag deployment.
    • Have your information — Wherever you go, make sure to bring along your pregnancy record card, which includes a detailed list of medical information, test results, and emergency contacts.

Belated Happy Mother’s Day and drive safely!

    BlackBerry Z10: Quick camera update

    0

The initial infatuation with the Z10, BlackBerry’s latest hero phone, has worn off, and it has shown that it’s more than just a pretty face. It has performed exceedingly well as a messaging phone, and while it doesn’t have the dizzying number of apps its more popular OSs have, what it does, it does pretty well. Of particular note is the camera on the device. It’s quite nice, and deserves a little more attention.

    IMG_00000085

It does a pretty good job of capturing images up-close. this dragonfly was taken indoors, with only the outside light filtering in. Fine details come in pretty clear, and though it took the auto-focus a few tried to get the subject clear, the results were pretty good. The darker parts of the image are a little muddy, but more than satisfactory.

IMG_00000088 This is a shot of our meting room/work area at home. I took this shot in the evening, with some harsh fluorescent lighting overhead. The flash popped in this shot, but didn’t really do much apart from wash out the chair that is located in the center of the image. Again, the detail is pretty fine, and the colors are true, if a little on the greenish side, probably because of the light. It takes shots in bright light very well, which is something to bear in mind should you find yourself outdoors without a dedicated snapper.

IMG_00000027This shot was taken in the late afternoon, outdoors. The camera has a little trouble capturing both the bright petals of the sunflowers and the shadows underneath. The Z10’s screen showed the photo almost completely dark at the bottom, so I am quite glad it comes out a bit better on an actual laptop screen. Focusing time is much improved both because of the abundance of light and the larger frame I was catching. There was also movement when this shot was taken, owing to the wind, but the camera seemed fast enough to catch the photo without blurring.

    IMG_00000073

This shot was taken again in the late afternoon, with the sun coming in through a restaurant window. The camera had no trouble focusing in the direct afternoon sun, and the shadows came out great. The image is a little darker than how it actually looked real life, but again, the detail is nice and sharp.

    IMG_00000016_2 (1)

The camera isn’t perfect though. This shot was taken in a cafe, with some diffused yellow lighting. It took forever to focus on the subject, and even then, things were a little fuzzy. I noticed this to be the trend with low-light shots: it would have some trouble, and the end result wasn’t always the best. If there’s any room for improvement with the Z10 camera, it is with low-light performance.

We’ll have another update in a bit, and we’ll show you how the Z10 performs while taking shots of people in varying environments, and maybe a video or two if we can spare the space! Stay tuned!

    Unboxing the Sony Xperia Z

    IMG_00000064

Not very many devices get me excited these days. Everything of late just seems so similar. The market is full of overpowered phones that do far more than is usually expected of a mobile device. Still, once in a while, something comes down the pipe and gets me worked up. Sony devices in particular get me in that state. The first phone I bought with my own money was a Sony, mostly because I really liked how it looked (it was a T610, if you should know.)  When I heard of the Xperia Z though, I think I may have visibly salivated. Even as far as Sony phones go, the Xperia Z is a real looker.

    IMG_00000067

The newest flagship device from the Japanese giant is gorgeous. It is a slim 5.47 x 2.80 x .31 inches, and sits nicely in the hand, tipping the scales at a weighty, but not heavy 146 grams.

    IMG_00000073

The construction of the device is solid, and typical of how Sony makes their phones. No matter how you hold, bend or press on it, there isn’t a single creak to be heard. The front and back of the device are glass, adding to the already robust feel of the Xpeira Z. This is a phone you’re going to take out of your pocket a lot, just because it is so nice to hold.

    IMG_00000072

The edges are a little more angular than other phones in the market at the moment, but that’s a good thing. It’s nice how it feels so different from other phones we’ve handled recently. The ports and plugs are all sealed, allowing the device to stand up to a quick dunking or trip to the shower, but still manages to have buttons that click solidly.

The power key and volume rocker, both located on the right edge of the phone, are large and easily accessible, even with one hand, There really aren’t any other keys to deal with on the phone, apart from the “Back,” “Home,” and multitasking softkeys on the front of the Z.

    IMG_00000071

One of the best things about the Xperia Z is the huge 5-inch screen. It’s a lovely 1080 x 1920 deal, giving it a resolution of about 441 ppi. This, coupled with Sony’s Bravia Engine 2 make for a really beautiful viewing experience.

The Xperia Z has a 13.1 MP main camera, a 2.2 MP up front and runs a quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait processor coupled with 2 GB of RAM. lipping through home screens, the gallery and other programs is nothing to the device, and we’re pretty confident it can handle anything you can throw at it. It runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but Sony has made plans to offer an update to 4.2 in the future.

We’ll be updating you folks on the Xperia Z over the next few days as we use it, but if you want a full review, we’ll have it for you in the June issue of Gadgets Magazine, coming in a few weeks.

    Olympus unveils PEN E-P5

    0

    olympuspen1

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the PEN F, Olympus launches its digital counterpart, the PEN E-P5, which now serves as the new flagship model in the company’s line of micro four-thirds cameras, the PEN series.

    wifi

The PEN E-P5 is the first Olympus camera to feature built-in Wi-Fi. By scanning a QR code on the camera’s LCD, users will be able to sync their mobile device with the wireless network created by the camera. The Olympus Image Share 2.0 app lets users use their mobile device as a remote viewfinder and enables them to embed GPS information in the images.

    backtilt

The new device is also the first compact system camera with a mechanical shutter that can achieve a speed of 1/8000. It packs a 16-megapixel TruePic VI Live MOS sensor and is compatible with the entire range of micro four-thirds lenses offered by Olympus. It carries a 1.04-million touch-panel LCD that can be tilted upwards at an 80-degree angle and downwards at a 50-degree angle. It doesn’t have a viewfinder on deck, but Olympus offers an optional VF-4 electronic viewfinder (EVF) that can be used on the device. The E-P5 comes with a built-in flash.

    back

The 5-axis image stabilization mechanism, which was introduced in the Olympus OM-D E-M5, has been reduced to a more compact size to fit in the E-P5’s slim body. The new IS-AUTO mode automatically detects the camera’s movements and gives the user control over correction when panning.

handtopUsing the same AF system found in the OM-D E-M5, the E-P5 has a Super Spot AF function that allows the user to bring a particular point in the frame into focus.

Creative features include 12 Art Filters, the Time Lapse movie function which lets users convert a series of pictures into a mini-movie, and Photo Story mode, which creates a collage out of multiple photos of a scene. The E-P5 also has an interval shooting function that allows users to set a time interval between 1 second to 24 hours, as well as how many shots the camera should take in a series.

    threecolors

Other features include quick start-up, short release time lag AF mode—which reduces the time between shots to 0.044 seconds—and 9fps burst shooting. The device is available in black, white and silver.

The Olympus PEN E-P5 will be available this month at a suggested retail price of USD 999.99 for the body-only package, and USD 1,499.99 for the package that includes a black or silver body, a black M.Zuiko Digital 17mm F1.8 lens, and a VF-4 EVF.

100 million Windows 8 licenses sold worldwide

    Windows_8_display

Tami Reller, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Windows, announced in an interview published in the Windows blog that they have already sold 100 million licenses for Windows 8 worldwide.

“We recently surpassed the 100 million licenses sold mark for Windows 8. This number includes Windows licenses that ship on a new tablet or PC, as well as upgrades to Windows 8. This is up from the 60 million license number we provided in January,” says Reller. “We’ve also seen the number of certified devices for Windows 8 and Windows RT grow to 2,400 devices, and we’re seeing more and more touch devices in the mix.”

Reller also tells Mashable, “Upgrade season was pretty much over in January once all the offers expired. So pretty much all of the growth from 60 to 100 [million] is new PCs.”

Windows Store, meanwhile, has reached more than 60,000 available apps.

ACC introduces a new way to drive home in a brand new BMW

Asian Carmakers Corporation (ACC), the official importer and distributor of BMW vehicles in the Philippines, just recently introduced FlexiLease – a new innovation in BMW ownership that addresses the mobility requirements of top professionals and corporations.

FlexiLease is an operating lease program that offers flexibility for companies and individuals who want to take home a BMW at the most convenient way possible. Available in twenty-four and thirty-six month lease terms for all BMW models, the customer simply has to pay a refundable ten-percent guaranty deposit as well as a one-month cash advance rental fee, and he or she can drive off in their vehicle of choice.

“What makes FlexiLease a convenient option in getting a car is that the lease fees already include insurance, registration fees from the LTO, and other standard maintenance costs, and still let you save more money at the end of every lease term,” says Glen Dasig, ACC Executive Director of Sales and Marketing. He also adds that since the FlexiLease plan is directly tied up with a BMW dealer, the customer is guaranteed the best service and maintenance for the car, thereby giving more value for their money.

As an introductory bonus, ACC is offering a fifty percent discount for the first year’s monthly fees that promises additional savings. With this offer, customers who opt for the three-year term can drive home a BMW 116i with a PHP 229,000 deposit, and monthly fees of PHP22,490.00 for the first 12 months, and PHP 44,980 for the remainder of the lease. This translates to a savings of PHP 269,880.

At the end of every lease term, the customer can either return the car and use the deposit to begin a new lease term for another brand new BMW, re-new the lease contract for another term, or simply, end the lease term and return the car, and more importantly, get his deposit back.

“As a way of sharing the success we’ve had for the past 10 years in the local market, we’re introducing FlexiLease as an additional option for Filipinos to experience the BMW Brand. For this program, we have partnered with Asia United Fleet Management Services, Inc. (AUFMS),” said Maricar Parco, President of ACC. “This program offers attractive benefits such as low deposit, low monthly fees, and an easy way to upgrade to a new BMW when new models are introduced.”

Interested applicants may inquire more about the FlexiLease program by visiting all authorized BMW dealerships around the country or www.bmwflexilease.com. They can also email their inquiries at [email protected].

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 and 780 pictures leaked

    gtx700

You probably won’t have to wait until Computex for the GeForce GTX 700 series cards to be announced—a Chinese-language forum, Chiphell, has leaked pictures (and some specs) of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 and 780, therefore unofficially confirming the existence of the GTX 700 series.

    geforcegtx770

According to the person who posted the leak, the GTX 770 uses the same cooler as the flagship GTX TITAN, which is priced at USD$1,000 (approximately PHP 41,000), but will allegedly only cost between USD$399-449 (around PHP 16,359-18,409). It is essentially a higher-clocked GTX 680 with the GTX TITAN’s cooler on board. It comes with a GK104 GPU with 1536 CUDA cores on board with a 256-bit interface. Surprisingly, this model only has 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM, but it is certain that a 4 GB model will also be available. There’s no definite release date yet, although some sources point to the end of May as a release date.
