Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 makes debut in MWC 2013

Bigger than the Note II, but smaller than the Note 10.1. This is the perfect way to describe Samsung’s new phablet that recently made its first appearance in the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain—the Galaxy Note 8.0.

Based on the size and specs of the device, it is clear that the Note 8.0 is the Korean company’s reaction to the iPad Mini. It measures a little over 8 inches in height, under 8mm in slimness, and 338g in weight. Think of it as a slightly shrunken Note 10.1.

Inside the Note 8.0 is a 1.6GHz Exynos 4 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM. The device runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean as its OS and comes in 16GB and 32GB variants. The Note 8.0 features an 8-inch Full HD TFT touch screen with a pixel density of 189 ppi (notably higher than the iPad Mini’s 163ppi display).

The Note 8.0 comes with an updated S Pen functionality that allows users to use the S Pen to control physical buttons as well, eliminating the need to switch between the use of your fingers and the stylus. The Air View feature, where users can interact with the screen simply by hovering over it with S Pen, has also been upgraded and is now compatible with third-party apps. Pre-loaded in the Note 8.0 is Awesome Note, a note-taking app that was previously only available to iOS devices.

The device also has a built-in IR blaster. Users can utilize the Note 8.0 as a universal remote control for other electronic devices—TVs, media players, and the like—of different brands.

The Note 8.0 comes in 3G and 4G variations, which means that you’ll be able to text and make calls on it—no matter how ridiculous you may look holding up an 8-inch slate to your ear. Additionally, Samsung announced that the US will only have access to the Wi-Fi variant of the device.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8.0 is expected to hit the market worldwide in Q2.

ZTE announces the Grand Memo and the Open at the Mobile World Congress

ZTE has brought us two new smartphones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona—the Grand Memo and the Open. During the event, ZTE was confident that their devices will make an impact in the market—so confident that they targeted becoming a top three smartphone maker by 2015, alongside the current big guns in the smartphone industry, Apple and Samsung.

The ZTE Grand Memo lives up to its name—or at least the “grand” part of it. It sports a 5.7-inch screen but is only 0.33 inches thin, with a 720×1280 screen resolution (386 ppi). It comes with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, a 1.5 GHz Krait 400 CPU and 2 GB of RAM. It has 16 GB of internal memory (expandable via microSD), a 13 megapixel back camera and a 1 megapixel front camera. The back camera will also be capable of recording Full HD (1080p) video. The Grand Memo will also have the Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) OS, with ZTE’s custom user interface (UI), Mifavour, layered on top of it. The Grand Memo will be powered by a 3200 mAh battery, and will also have LTE support, which makes sense as more and more carriers roll out their LTE networks. The ZTE Grand Memo will be available by the second quarter of 2013, although pricing was not announced at the event.

The new Firefox OS is also going to be part of ZTE’s lineup through the entry-level ZTE Open. The ZTE Open will have a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen at a 320×480 resolution (165 ppi), and will be 0.49 inches thin. It will also come with a Qualcomm MSM7225A Snapdragon chipset, along with a 1GHz Cortex A5 CPU and 256 MB of RAM. There will be 512 MB of storage (also expandable via microSD) and a 3.15 megapixel back camera. It will also be powered by a 1200 mAh battery. There will also be Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support

Regarding the Firefox OS and the ZTE Open, Mozilla co-founder and ZTE’s chief technology officer, Brendan Eich, said, “We wanted to make the Web open and available and accessible to everyone. We wanted developers to hack the Web without permission, and give users control over their experience.” Eich also said, “There are several hundred thousand iOS and Android developers, but there are 8 million Web developers.”

The ZTE Open will also be released in the second quarter of 2013, but there is no word on to how much it will cost.

Smart releases full music video of “Tayo’y Mga Pinoy” collaboration

    0

What better way to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution than to unite four iconic figures in contemporary OPM rock to recreate one of the most significant songs during the time of the historic uprising—Heber Bartolome’s Tayo’y Mga Pinoy.

A two-minute music video, produced by Smart and directed by Mark Querubin, shows a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between Raimund Marasigan, Barbie Almalbis, Rico Blanco, and Ely Buendia. In the video, these contemporary rock icons sing Bartolome’s timeless tune in different parts of the country, but perform in sync with each other via the internet, thus demonstrating how speedy and seamless SmartBro’s fiber-powered network is.

The music video was officially launched last night at the press event held at the Jump Experience Center in SM Megamall. The four artists sat together for the first time (each of their parts in the music video were shot separately) and answered questions about how SmartBro’s services are able to help musicians like them in what they do.

Lahat dumadali, ‘e. Now, it’s easier to communicate with the fans, to announce shows, to tell the fans kung totoo mang may show, tell them the exact date and venue of shows and how to get ahold of tickets, to collaborate with bandmates and friends, or and to send a track to someone abroad,” said Raimund Marasigan, speaking for all of them. “Ngayon, pwede nang gawin ‘yun. Dati imposible ‘yun.”

Heber Bartolome was also present at the event. “Ang ganda ng areglo,” he said, complimenting the arrangement of the cover.

Prior to the debut of the music video, a shorter version began airing as a 30-second TV commercial. The ad was also posted on YouTube and was able to garner more than a million hits in only six days after posting.

The Tayo’y Mga Pinoy revival is now available on iTunes. Smart users can also download the song for free for five days as a Caller Ring Back Tune (CRBT) by texting PNOY to 2728.

Nokia Announces Nokia 105, 301, Lumia 520 and Lumia 720

    0

The Nokia 301, the first of the phones launched, is in-line with Nokia’s unified approach with design, with a strong focus on what people do on their phones on a daily basis, such as calls, messages and photos. The device is offered in single and dual-sim, and gives users premium features such as panorama mode, sequential shot, and an awesome voice assisted self-portrait assist that tells you out loud whether to move left right, up or down, so you get exactly the shot you need. Photo sharing is also made simpler with Nokia Slam, a bluetooth photo sharing app that removes the hassle of BT pairing, passcodes and all that voodoo, in place of a simple phone bump. The 301 will be made available in Asia in the second quarter of this year, for 65 Euros.

The second device, the Nokia 105, is an entry-level phone that gives users the beautiful unified Nokia design in an extremely affordable package. It has a splash and dust-proof keypad, the useful Nokia flashlight, a suite of games, music and a radio plus amazing battery life (once a month charging, people!) all for the rediculously low price of 15 Euros, or about PHP 800 in the first quarter of this year. It is being touted as a perfect entry-level phone, or alway ready, always available backup phone.

The first of the Lumias launched was the Lumia 520, likely to be made available here the second qurter of this month, features a 4-inch display, 1GHZ, dual-core processor and 8GB of internal memory. This Wondows Phone 8 device also gives users a 5-MP autofocus camera, with the same lens as the Lumia 920, so we can expect nothing but beautiful shots. It also has an added Photobeamer app that lets you share photos with anyone, on the spot, through nothing more than web browser. It also comes out of the box with Nokia Music, that gives users access to playlists, artists and tracks (though not individual songs), without the need to load and reload from a computer. It also comes with the Nokia Here suite, which features Nokia Here Drive (the new name for their amazing navigation suite), Here Maps and Here Transit that lets people pick a route home via public transit.

The Lumia 720, the last phone revealed at the press conference, is a device aimed for non LTE markets, and will likely be available here in the Philippines in the second quarter of this yea for  249 Euros, or about 14,000 Pesos. It features a 4.3-inch Clearblack display with their extremely smooth curved glass screen. Nokia has said that the quality of the display is at par with much, much pricier phones from other manufacturers. It also has amazing viewing angles due to the screen design, and is the first f the line to offer microSD support. The device will also give the option of upgrading to the subscription-based Nokia Music Plus service that allows better quality audio, lyrics streaming and unlimited playlist downloads, though no price was mentioned. The Lumia 720’s camera come paking Carl Zeiss optics and an f1.9 aperture that lets more light in than almost any device in the market today, resulting in great low-light performance and unequaled color reproduction and vivdness. There is also a wide-angle, 1.3 MP front camera for video conferencing and self-portraits, and a Placetag Photo app that lets you tag your photos with location, date and other details, just like labeling old-school printed photos. The Lumia 720 has same battery as lumia 920, and supports wireless charging through interchangeable back color covers.

Along with the phones, was Nokia’s announcement that the HERE suite will be available to non-Nokia devices, as well as Firefox’s new OS, great news for everybody all around.

That was it for the Nokia presscon. There wasn’t really any mention of the rumored Windows 8 Pureview device or anything to that effect, but it’s great to see the Fins further strengthening their device lineup, while not losing focus on their lower and mid range offerings. The 720 in particular has us wanting a hands-on, and the 520 looks to be a stunner in its own right. Stay tuned for more announcements and perhaps updates pricing as the weeks roll by.

Huawei reveals the world’s fastest 4G LTE smartphone, the Huawei Ascend P2

Coming off of its strong third place finish in the fourth quarter of 2012 in the mobile phone market share (just behind Samsung and Apple and ahead of Sony), Huawei seeks to build on their success by introducing the Huawei Ascend P2, dubbed “the world’s fastest 4G LTE smartphone.”

The Ascend P2 features a 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU and LTE Cat 4 providing an ultra-fast web experience with download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Continuing the fashion legacy of the Ascend P series, it is only 8.4 mm slim. It also has a 4.7-inch IPS HD in-cell touch display with second-generation Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the phone. It has 16 GB of internal memory and 1 GB of RAM, along with a 13 megapixel back camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. The back camera can record 1080p (Full HD) video at 30 fps, and the front camera is capable of 720p video at 30 fps. Its 2420 mAh battery will ensure long battery life to enjoy all the features of the device. All of these features are powered by the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS. The Huawei Emotion UI will be layered on top of the Android OS.

The Huawei Emotion UI includes the UniHome function, which combines home panels with the main menu, while Huawei’s patent-pending Me Widget better utilizes screen real-estate by combining all the information and functions you need in a single, customizable widget. The Huawei Emotion UI is also pre-installed with a smartphone housekeeper function to support real-time data traffic tracking, automatic blacklisting and blocking, periodical system cleaning, and spontaneous exiting of idle programs and cache cleanup, in addition to anti-virus, energy saving, privacy protection, software management, and more.

“Ascend P2 is the perfect combination of elegance and power, and further proof that there’s no need to compromise when desiring a perfect smartphone. It is evidence of the outstanding smartphone experiences and great technology that we are committed to bringing to consumers globally,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

The Huawei Ascend P2 will be available globally in the second quarter of 2013.

Intel expected to announce new mobile CPUs at the Mobile World Congress

Intel is expected to announce the Clover Trail+ mobile CPUs at the 2013 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which will be Intel’s first dual-core chip for smartphones. The Atom CPU provides double the computing performance and triple the graphics capabilities of its predecessor, Medfield, and will use the same level of power consumption as the Medfield chips.

Intel chips have been power draining in the past—using more power than ARM-based chips—and thus, haven’t been used in many smartphones and tablets. Intel seeks to turn that around this year. “They’re really making significant inroads in mobile processors,” said Creative Strategies analyst Tim Bajarin. “This new Clover Trail is probably the first real step toward Intel becoming a significant player in the smartphone arena.” Intel’s Clover Trail+ CPUs will come in three variations: 1.2GHz, 1.6GHz, and 2.0GHz, 1.6GHz. All of these CPUs will come with an Intel graphics media accelerator engine with a graphics core supporting up to 533MHz with boost mode.

Some smartphone manufacturers are already on board with the new Intel CPU. Lenovo is expected to unveil the K900 (above), which will use the Clover Trail+ CPU, and Asus is also expected to announce products that will make use of the Clover Trail+ CPU.

However, Clover Trail+ might not last long, as it is a 32 nanometer (nm) processor and uses older architecture. Intel said it will transition to 22 nm processors and a newer architecture later this year with its new CPU, Merrifield. Although Intel didn’t talk too much about Merrifield, it did say that the CPU “will help enable increased smartphone performance, power efficiency, and battery life.”

Intel also discussed a 22 nm chip that will be used with tablets, named Bay Trail. This will be Intel’s first quad-core Atom chip and will have double the processing power of the current-generation tablet chip. It is expected to debut by the 2013 holiday season. Although it is not known which tablets will be using this chip yet, it has been rumored that the Asus FonePad, a phablet, will probably use the Bay Trail CPU.

It’s official: Samsung to launch S4 this March

    0

We’re well into 2013 now, and as such, we’ve got announcements left and right by way of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. At the top of the news pile from the event is Samsung’s (sort of) announcement that their new flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be launched on the 14th of March this year. The news comes from a few sources, most notably CNET that has confirmed through a high-raking Samsung suit that the device will be launched at the March 14 event for which they received an invite. This is likely one of the bigger announcements this year, and in true Samsung stye, might very well have stolen the spotlight from the other devices set to be announced at the international event this week.

The rumored specs for the S4 include an eight-core Exynos Processor with a discrete eight-core GPU, a 4.99-inch AMOLED screen, 2GB of RAM, a 13-MP rear camera and 4.2.2 Jellybean. There is no report on pricing as yet, so I guess the Korean Giant is saving a little bit for the MWC proper. Stay posted, we’ll let you know the latest as soon as we have more news.

Smart partners with Mozilla to bring first Firefox OS devices to PH

Mozilla and its partner handset makers have recently been giving us a peek at the first set of smartphones running Mozilla’s own operating system called Firefox OS, a web-based mobile platform built entirely using open Web standards that can run HTML5-based apps. Before the opening of the 2013 Mobile World Congress (MWC) today in Barcelona, the company announced that it will be partnering with various operators around the world to bring the device to different countries. The Philippines is lucky enough to be included in the first wave of distribution of Firefox OS devices, and the network that will be bringing them to our shores is no other than Smart.

Smart is the sole network that has committed to distributing Firefox OS devices in the country. In other countries, the list of partners include América Móvil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Three Group, KDDI, KT, MegaFon, Qtel, SingTel, Sprint, Telecom Italia Group, Telefónica, Telenor, Telstra, TMN and VimpelCom.

“Firefox’s entry to the mobile phone market will bring customer experience to another level with lower cost barrier to ownership and more choices in terms of devices and mobile apps,” says Smart executive vice president and wireless consumer division head Emmanuel Lorenzana, who, along with other Smart executives, is in Barcelona to support the event. He adds, “This will also foster a healthier and more competitive developer community. We’re very keen to see a vibrant ecosystem based on HTML5 technology such as Firefox OS.”

The first Firefox OS mobile devices will be from LG, Alcatel and ZTE, and each will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

It runds SSD Accelerated Hyper Dense compute nodes ensuring significantly higher performance than leading cloud environments,” said Globe Business Head of Buisiness Products Francisco Claravall. This event is set to highlight the ease of use and access of Globe’s Cloud, a well as the talent of over a hundred registered teams and dozens of teams. Teams will scramble to both port an app onto the Globe Cloud, as well as develop an app from scratch, all overnight. It highlights the ease of access, simplicity of use and economy of the platform, well before the scheduled public launch.

The Cloud Platform is ideal for freelancers, SMEs and solution providers, since all the applications already reside on the cloud, so individual users need not spend for expensive hardware and software licences, yet still have the ability to create apps for particular business requirements. The cloud puts SMEs and individual devs, as it puts such resources within the reach of anyone with a credit card. “Billing-wise, usage can be checked an billing details can be changed any time,” Claravall added. Subscriptions can also be maintained through credit card payments. The cloud also puts the power and reliability of Globe’s MK II data center, a super-secure, local, world-class facility, behind even the smallest SME, ensuring low latency and a greatly reduced chance of downtime.

OS X Mountain Lion found running on a Microsoft Surface Pro

    0

Apple and Microsoft are seen as long-time rivals of one another, but there are many programs and applications that can work on both a PC and a Mac. Programs like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and many popular web browsers such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are just some of the examples of software that can work on both operating systems. However, a Microsoft Surface Pro user has gotten OS X (Mountain Lion) to run on his device, which is different because it’s an entire operating system as opposed to a single program.

    http://youtu.be/icPMg_qkSRs

Although PCs are seen as cheaper and more customizable, some users decide to use OS X as their operating system rather than Windows. There are some unofficial modified versions of OS X available out there, despite the Apple-imposed checks that determine whether or not the device is actually a Mac, requiring that the hardware is similar to hardware found on Mac computers.

The Surface Pro is powered with an Intel Core i5 and hardware that is similar to the hardware found on low-end Mac devices. Therefore, running OS X on this device could bypass the Apple-imposed checks. If OS X actually does run on this device, it would be left to see how much of the hardware would be supported. Two pieces of hardware, namely USB 3.0 and a multi-touch screen, are present on Windows devices, but are not present on Mac.
