Apple’s new iPhone will support LTE in the US, Europe and Asia

We’re days from the official iPhone unveil, and unsurprisingly even more rumors about the upcoming smartphone has surfaced. This time around, it’s about its supposed LTE features – The Wall Street Journal is saying that the new iPhone will feature LTE support for multiple regions, which include the US, Europe and Asia. Unfortunately, not every country with LTE will have an LTE equipped iPhone, as people close to the matter said that it isn’t likely to work with all carriers’ LTE networks in all countries, and it wasn’t clear which country would be left out.Of course, that’s nature of the new wireless standard, but there’s a good chance that we may get some of that sweet iPhone LTE pie, seeing as at least one of our carriers (Smart) uses a similar band to Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, which incidentally, has 2.23 million LTE subscribers.

Kaspersky Lab’s newest antivirus protects you from socially engineered attacks

Whenever people buy a new PC, getting some sort of digital prophylactic is usually the first order of business. Most people have a rudimentary knowledge of how to protect themselves online, but unfortunately Malware writers have found newer and more creative ways to steal personal information. Kaspersky knows this, and have crafted new features to counteract this in the latest iteration of their anti-virus, Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013. The new versions of the anti-virus have several features that help prevent socially engineered attacks against internet users. These are:

    • Unique automatic exploit prevention technology that identifies and blocks exploits
    • Specialized safe money technology which includes specialized “Safe Browser” mode, isolating money-related business from other online activities
    • New antivirus engine with excellent detection rates for all kinds of malicious programs
    • Enhanced anti-spam features
    • Better performance and simplified user experience

Users can get licenses for both programs for a competitive rate, with prices starting from Php 1,160 for Kaspersky’s Internet Security 2013, and Php 760 for Kaspersky’s Anti Virus 2013.

IHS forecasts smartphone domination in cellphone shipments in 2013

    Art by JP Pining

Research firm IHS predicts that smartphones will become the dominant mobile devices in terms of unit shipments as early as 2013, which will mark the first time that smartphones will make up more than half of all cellphone shipments. According to an IHS media tracker report, smartphone shipments in 2013 are forecast to account for 54% of the total cellphone market, up from 46% in 2012 and 35% in 2011. IHS predicts that double-digit growth in smartphone shipments will continue, driving the form factor’s share of overall sales to 67.4% by 2016.

According to IHS Senior Analyst for Wireless Communications Wayne Lam, the decline in smartphone prices in the past year and the growing variety of models has shot up the “sales of both low-end smartphones in regions like Asia Pacific, as well as midrange to high-end phones in the United States and Europe.”

The strong growth of the smartphone sector in the Philippines is said to be propelled by the increasing affordability of smartphones in the country. According to market research firm GfK Philippines, the Philippines is one of the fastest growing smartphone markets in the Southeast Asian region. GfK reports that consumers in the Philippines have bought five times as many smartphones in the first five months of 2012 compared to 2011, bringing smartphone sales to nearly 1.7 million units as of May 2012.

Globe offering nano-SIMs next month, hints of early iPhone 5 availability

Globe has just sent confirmed that they will be offering Nano-SIMs at their stores by next month, which hints that the telco may be eyeing an early rollout for the iPhone 5. Traditionally, any launch of a new Apple device usually meant a 3-4 month wait before it becomes locally available, something that may change with the new iPhone 5. It’s widely known that Apple is looking to get their products to as many hands as possible, eschewing exclusivity deals with carriers for wider distribution, so it’s not out of the question that we may see the new device on our shores earlier than usual. Globe’s statement accompanying the announcement does little to quell the fire (emphasis ours):
“The Nano-SIM cards are packaged and distributed in a way that is backward- compatible with existing SIM cards. The new design will offer the same functionality as all current SIM cards,” added ETSI. “When Nano-SIM cards enter production, their size will free up room inside mobile phones for additional memory and larger batteries, helping phone vendors create thinner devices”, revealed Giesecke & Devrient, a global pioneering innovator that provides end-to-end solutions for identification systems and mobile security applications.

“Once again, Globe pioneers in bringing the latest technologies to Filipino mobile phone users as we offer the revolutionary Nano-SIMs in our Globe Stores with the availability of newer smartphone models using this type of SIM very soon. With the Nano-SIM and its stunning features and specifications, our smartphone experience will definitely be taken to another level,” said Martha Sazon, Head of Globe Postpaid.

Since it’s widely rumored that the iPhone 5 may very well be the first Nano-SIM handset (which makes sense, since they fought for it in the first place). We’ll know more once Apple launches its device on September 12.

Cemetery comes to life with QR codes

Whenever you go to visit a cemetery, there’s usually a tombstone of the deceased with the date of birth, date of death, and sometimes a short quote or epitaph. However, a cemetery seeks to take it a step further and put a quick response (QR) code near someone’s grave to tell a little bit more about the person.

A graveyard in the city of Roskilde, Denmark has started to use the codes to help commemorate the deceased, offering more information than found on a traditional headstone. Printed on a porcelain plate and attached to a small stone, the QR codes can be found in the ground beside the headstones. Scan it with a smartphone and you’re taken to a website of the deceased showing their photo alongside a summary of their life.

Roskilde resident Dorthe Frydenlund decided to place a QR code by the grave of her father, Brent. “As a family it means a lot when you are here and feel the need to commemorate Dad,” Frydenlund said. “It’s not meant as a comfort, more an opportunity for other people to learn his life story. It’s a good way for my son to remember his grandfather.”

Niels Kristian Nielsen, director of Denmark’s largest gravestone manufacturer, says, “It’s a good way to tell the story of a person. And we all have a story. Both the farmer, the director, they all have a story. And also it makes a visit to the graveyard much more interesting.”

Other towns in Denmark are looking into this service, and if it picks up enough steam, we could be seeing it worldwide. “There are lots of people who are important and I think their story and what they have done with their life is important,” said Hanne Korsby, who is a member of a church council in Holbaek. “I think it’s very important for the next generation to have this memory.”

This could be a big help for families to preserve their genealogy for future generations, whereas before people had to piece together anecdotes and rely on oral tradition about their ancestors, and mostly older relatives told these stories at family gatherings. Although the service isn’t available here yet, it might be considering the emphasis on family in our country.

Microsoft Launches IT: It’s more fun in the Philippines Campaign

Microsoft launched their newest campaign yesterday aimed at empowering Filipino owned businesses. The campaign, named IT: It’s more fun in the Philippines, will be targeting different cities around the country, and will start with a 15-city productivity roadshow. . Karrie Capellan-Ilagan, Microsoft Philippines Managing Director said that the roadshow will also highlight home grown technological innovations, which she hopes will inspire and drive entrepreneurs to use technology powered by their IT and productivity solutions.

The campaign is in partnership with Ford Philippines who will provide their all new 2013 Ranger as the official vehicle of the roadshow. The 2013 Ranger will carry Microsoft Philippine’s 3 MVPs (most valuable professionals) on the 15 city tour. Microsoft MVPs are considered the best and brightest from technology communities around the Philippines and will actively share their technical expertise with the different communities they will visit during the roadshow.

This is the iPhone 5 booting with the iPhone 4S

Apple has sent out invites for their official iPhone 5 unveil on the 12th, which means there’s already plenty of devices out in the wild heading towards retailers and partners. One such device was apparently accidentally discovered at Foxconn’s factory in Jincheng, which probably means it was five-finger discounted by a enterprising worker. Anyway, said worker took a side-by-side video of the iPhone 5 along with iPhone 4S showing the entire boot process of the iPhone 5, stopping at the “cannot complete activation” message of iOS6. From what we see, the iPhone 5 looks like a slightly elongated iPhone 4S with a bigger screen, and aside from the minor changes (repositioned headphone jack, smaller dock connector) is similar to the iPhone 4S. Of course, this could all be an elaborate fake, and until Apple shows the official device on the 12th, all leaks are suspect.

    Lumia 820 official, 4.3-inch ClearBlack OLED WVGA 800×480 display, 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4, 1GB RAM

Along with its flagship Lumia 920, Nokia also announced the Lumia 820 tonight. Playing the smaller brother to the 920, the Lumia 820 uses a smaller, 4.3-inch ClearBlack OLED WVGA display with an overall resolution of 800×480. This particular Lumia smartphone runs on a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor similar to its bigger brother which is paired with 1GB of RAM. Like the Lumia 920, the Lumia 820 is also wireless charging capable, and also uses the Qi wireless charging standard, so it’s a safe bet that it’s also capable of using the same wireless chargers as the Lumia 920. The Lumia 820 also allows users to change the shell of the body, which gives a wider range of color options for users. Unfortunately, the Lumia 820 doesn’t use Nokia’s PureView image technology, rather relying on a somewhat sedate 8-megapixel auto focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics, instead of the PureView sensor on the larger Lumia 920. There’s 8GB of storage on tap, along with an additional 7GB of storage courtesy of SkyDrive.

Nokia Lumia 920 finally official: 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor, PureView sensor, wireless charging

After being leaked throughly before its official unveil, Nokia’s Lumia 920 is finally official. Seems like most of the leaks were spot-on: it’ll come bearing a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4.5-inch display, wireless charging capability and is equipped with an 8.7-megapixel PureView image sensor. A 2,000mAh battery keeps everything nice and powered, the biggest Nokia has ever used in a phone. Naturally it’ll come with Windows Phone 8, along with all the services that that particular arrangement entails – navigation, music and Windows Phone apps.

Nokia claims that the Lumia 920 takes better pictures and video because of the PureView sensor, and claims that the 920 captures between 5 and 10 times the light of any other smartphone, thanks to its floating lens technology that surpasses the optical image stabilization of most SLRs. The overall result is brighter and clearer images without flash, even indoors. A bold claim, one that we’ll put to the test once we get our hands on one of these units.

Nokia is also introducing improved location based services into the Lumia 920, with the most prominent one being city lens. It’s an augmented reality app that works a bit like Layar for Android, and gives you a realtime overlay POIs and places you want to go.

This app lets you pick from a set of 50 free instruments, so you can drop a beat, create a great new track and make loads of money by selling it to record execs. Or make a ringtone. Smart ups LTE ante, adds the 1800MHz band to its stable, brings better compatibility for LTE devices

Things just got a bit more real in LTE land, as Smart has announced that they have added the 1800MHz band to its LTE stable. Smart’s initial LTE offering (the one that we used during the beta period) ran on the 2100MHz band, which incidentally is similar to the one that their partner, Japanese telco and LTE pioneer NTT DoCoMo uses. With the new band, Smart’s LTE service should theoretically be able to run on a wider range of devices from different countries that uses the same band. Of course, Smart isn’t coming out and saying that’s the case yet, which is understandable, as the telco will have to do tests of their own to manage expectations when it comes to LTE compatibility for devices, but this particular development puts Smart at a distinct advantage over its rival Globe, which is yet to officially offer their own LTE service.
