    Review: LG Optimus 4X HD

We did a detailed hands-on of the LG Optimus 4X HD before, and today we’re finishing up the review by posting the performance numbers and other features that we missed during that article. Reading our detailed hands-on of the device is highly recommended before diving into this article.

The LG Optimus 4X HD is visually appealing, though it’s not at the same level aesthetically as the Samsung Galaxy S III or the HTC One X. It’s overall design is influenced by the L-style philosophy that’s been implemented in the L-series of phones that we’ve reviewed a couple of months before, namely the L7 and the L3. The back of the 4X HD has a textured back which helps in the overall grip of the device.

The 4X HD has a silver trim that’s complimented by a prism finish, which gives it an extra visual flair.

The screen is a 4.7-inch true HD IPS screen that has a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. Unfortunately, the screen is a bit prone to glare – our demo unit had a bit of issues when we tried using it outdoors, which is a bit of a shame really, as the screen is otherwise excellent.

The Optimus 4X HD runs on Google’s Android 4.0 OS (ICS) with their own UI overlay, dubbed Optimus UI 3.0. The same UI was present on the Optimus L7, though the limited hardware on the L7 couldn’t really do it justice. That’s not a problem with the 4X HD – the Tegra 3 processor has enough oomph to power the transition effects in the device. The UI overlay also replaces the somber, hi-tech feel of the stock UI of ICS with something more colorful and lively, which may or may not be up to your liking. Like anything, your mileage may vary.

One of the more positive aspects of the Optimus UI 3.0 is the camera app. See, the Optimus 4X HD has this camera feature called Time Catch shot. When you turn it on, the phone starts caching images from camera. Once you press the shutter, you’re given the option to keep the picture you just shot, or five images leading up to it in a span of about a second. This gives you a chance to grab a photograph that you might have missed.

We’ve posted pictures of the benchmark of the Optimus 4X HD before, but it bears repeating again for the sake of completeness. On AnTuTu, the Optimus 4X HD scores high marks (11510), going over the scores that the Asus Transformer Prime set (which is incidentally another quad-core device) and almost reaching the top spot.

On Quadrant Standard it’s a slightly different story, and the Optimus 4X HD only managed to nab 3665 points – still impressive, but it’s a bit far from the next quad-core powered device – the Transformer Prime.

These numbers translate to an overall better user experience – the Optimus 4X HD powered through most of the applications that we used it with. The interface felt slick and smooth, with nary a hiccup to be found during its time with us. The Optimus 4X HD also managed to eek out about a day of useful battery life with moderate use, which is a bit off the mark when compared to the battery performance of other, higher-end Android devices.

There are certain issues with the 4X HD, aside from the ones we already mentioned. The camera software needs improvement, as it has a tendency to continuously refocus, even after you touch the screen to try and get it to concentrate on one spot.

So is the LG Optimus 4X HD deserving to be your next phone? Well, that all depends on you. It isn’t as visually striking as the HTC One X or the Samsung Galaxy S III, but it makes up for that by being as fast as those two devices. On the plus side, the LG Optimus 4X HD has the advantage of being the cheapest option of the three, with a suggested retail price of Php 27,990 – which makes it very attractive to people looking to save a few bucks and still get a fast, feature packed smartphone.

    What’s Hot:

    Large 4.7-inch screen

    NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor

    Excellent UI overlay

Most affordable quad-core smartphone currently in the market

    What’s Not:

Camera software needs a lot of work

    Screen is prone to glare

    Bottomline:

It’s not perfect, but the LG Optimus 4X HD gives excellent value for money, especially when you consider the prices of its competitors.

    Buymeter: 4/5

    • Operating System: Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Optimus 3.0 UI overlay

Downgrade for iPhone 3GS Baseband available

    0

For those of us runing the 3GS jailbroken and carrier unlocked, it is quite likely you are running a reflashed version of the os with the iPad baseband. This is great since it lets you use the phone, but has a few problems, namely terrible mobile data battery life and a sudden lack of GPS. Wait no longer. It has been fixed (finally) and works totally fine. It’s not that hard a fix, either: just a quick download, reflash and hey, presto! all the functions are back where they should be. If you want to give it a try, head over to this video HERE. It’s a little scary, since you have to wait, but it works. Just make sure you follow the instructions.

You may want one of these for your Death Star

This one is for all the nerds in the house. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) has just fired the most powerful laser in the history of lasers. The laser, which fires for a fraction of a second, peaked at 500 Trillion watts, which is 1000 times more power than the US uses in any given moment, and is over 100 times more energetic than any of the lasers anywhere in the world. The point behind all of this, apart from being all sorts of nerd cool, is hydrogen fusion, one of the Holy Grails of energy production. To be honest, though, we believe this is all just a clever ploy to fool the Jedi. If you want to read more about it, head on over HERE. (Nerd stuff. Totally SFW)

Google Nexus 7 starts shipping to customers

People in the US who pre-ordered their Google Nexus 7, listen up. Google has announced on it’s Google+ page that they have started shipping their wundertablet out to the hands of customers who have taken the trouble to pre-order it when it was announced. Unfortunately, only people in the US and some territories are getting the Nexus 7 love, while countries outside of the US (like ours) can only look on with envious eyes. We’ll soon be getting our own Nexus 7 soon enough when Asus officially releases it here, unfortunately we’re only getting the 16GB version and we’ll be paying a bit more than our US counterparts. Such is life.

Amazing Alex is proof the Rovio isn’t a one trick pony

Many wondered if Angry Birds developer Rovio could successfully make another game to match their runaway hit, Angry Birds. Well, Amazing Alex hasn’t matched Angry Birds total downloads and revenue, but it’s currently poised to do that. If you haven’t checked it out yet, we’ll lay down Amazing Alex’s premise for you: it’s basically a physics puzzle game where you construct Rube Goldberg-esque contraptions to achieve objectives. Like Angry Birds, the game is simple to learn and is extremely addictive, and will definitely suck a bunch of your time if you’re not careful.

The game has risen swiftly since its release last Thursday – the paid, 0.99$ is currently best selling iPhone app in 35 countries, and it’s climbing swiftly up the Google Play store, where it sits at 11th place. Curiously, Amazing Alex didn’t start its life inside Rovio’s walls – the game was acquired by the company back in 2011 when it was known as Casey’s Contraptions, and was relaunched as Amazing Alex with noticeably more polish and flair. We’ve included the official links for the game if you’re interested in trying it out: iOS peeps can click here, while Android owners can go here for the game.

Android is king in the US and Philippines

It seems pretty damn obvious at this point, but it bears repeating – Android is the OS of choice for users in both our country, the Philippines and the folks in the US. In the good ol’ US of A, Android has managed to grab 52% of the smartphone market, with 34.3% belonging to Apple’s iOS according to the research firm Nielsen. In the Philippines, the divide is much greater – according to a report sent to us by Smart, Android now commands a whopping 82.2% of the smartphone pie, utterly cloberring all that come before it. The report was done by GfK, and apparently the report also lent another gem of information – 95% of the Android devices in the Philippines have HSPA in them, which Smart says is fueling the demand for mobile data.

Yahoo confirms third party credentials part of security breach, Gmail, AOL and Hotmail users affected

Remember that security breach that hit Yahoo yesterday? Well, it seems that the problem is a lot worse than we first thought. It seems that other email addresses have been pilfered as well – probably because they were the ones used to sign up for Yahoo’s Voice service. Marcus Carey, a researcher at Rapid7, has combed through the data pasted by the group D33Ds and found that there are 106,000 Gmail e-mail addresses, 55,000 Hotmail e-mail addresses and 25,000 AOL e-mail addresses associated with the pilfered Yahoo Voice accounts. Like we said, if you’re a current Yahoo Voice subscriber, it’s extremely important that you change your password immediately, as well as the password that’s associated with the email address you used to sign up for the service. If you’re someone who uses the same password across multiple sites and services, it is imperative that you change your passwords NOW.
