Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 (Galaxy S WiFi 4.2) hands-on, first impressions

It’s no question that Apple’s iPod has reigned supreme in the portable media player landscape, but its dominance hasn’t deterred manufacturers in creating products in the same category. Samsung’s Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 is one of those products, and is aimed at individuals who want a multimedia player that doesn’t have a fruit logo on the back.

The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 is a bit of an oddity, considering that’s it’s a bit off when it comes to screen size (with most 4-inch devices clocking in at either 4- or 4.3-inches), though its overall size 124.1 x 66.1 x 8.99mm means it’s almost the same size as a typical Android smartphone. The screen is a 4.2-inch, WVGA TFT deal, and the unit itself is running on a single core 1GHz procesor with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) on board. Also, we’re a bit confused over Samsung’s naming conventions in this case – Samsung Philippines calls it the Galaxy Player 4.2, though the box states it’s the Galaxy S WiFi 4.2.

Overall the unit felt ok, and as we said, it handled pretty much like a typical 4-inch Android smartphone. One thing we did notice is that the device is preloaded with two games – Fifa 2012 and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, which should keep users busy whenever boredom strikes. The screen is wide and bright enough that using it as a dedicated video player shouldn’t be a problem, and its speakers have sufficient oomph to let people understand whatever they’re watching. The Samsung Galaxy S WiFi 4.2 is priced at Php 9,990 here in the Philippines.

Gadgets Magazine was invited to participate in the Live Brilliant Test Drive Eon Edition last week that headed up to cool Baguio City. Forty media men (and women) and a few Hyundai Club members composed the 20 teams that were each assigned a brand-new Eon for the three-day testdrive that was composed of an econo-run, a photo scavenger hunt, and lots and lots of prizes.

You can read more about the Hyundai Eon and the Live Brilliant Test Drive in our 12th Anniversary issue this coming August, but in the mean time, watch this awesome video the Hyundai guys (and girls!) prepared.

New Facebook mobile feature for iOS and Android released, lets you see details of users within given radius

    0

A new Facebook mobile feature for Android and iOS called Find Friends Nearby allows you to see a list of the names of the people within a given radius, with links to their Facebook pages.

Facebook engineer Ryan Patterson designed the app chiefly for easier exchanging of contact information. Initially dubbed as Friendshake, the developer probably thinks of it as a virtual handshake—you meet someone new, and then when you decide to exchange contact details, you could just open your Facebook apps and use the feature to add each other up. No search required.

While we do realize that this feature can possibly be handy for easy networking, it does raise a lot of questions regarding security. For one thing, stalking just got easier. You easily have access to some information on the people within the vicinity. That can be dangerous if you’re on the “stalked” end, but luckily, phones will only detect those who are using the feature as well. So if you’re hiding from an assassin, you don’t have to worry unless you both have the feature running at the same time.

The Find Friends Nearby feature can be accessed by visiting http://fb.com/ffn on your mobile browser and by going to Menu>Apps>Find Friends>Other Tools.  You will see the Find Friends Nearby option at the bottom.

If you’re curious about how it looks and actually works, here’s a short video from Mashable:

[UPDATE] SlashGear reports that Facebook has just pulled the plug on Find Friends Nearby.

Google branded Nexus 7 tablet detailed: 7-inch screen, Tegra 3, IPS display with 1280 by 800 resolution, will retail for less than $200

Gizmodo Australia has apparently uncovered some documents relating to the soon to be launched, Nexus branded tablet, the Nexus 7. The documents call the product the Nexus 7, and have pegged it to be made by Asus and have a 7-inch, IPS display, running on a 1.3Ghz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, GeForce 12-core GPU and 1GB of RAM. The device is apparently slated to run using Android Jellybean and will come in two variants: a 8GB and 16GB. Here’s the kicker though: this particular device is slated to retail for about $199 (Php 8756) for the 8GB version  and $250 (Php 11,000) for the 16GB version, making it one of the cheapest and most affordable tablets once it (eventually) hits. We’ve known that Asus would be producing this tablet for a while, with folks from Asus company complaining that it was one of their secret products that wasn’t so secret when we were in Taiwan. Once this product hits our shores, the local tablet market would be pretty shaken up, considering that a typical Android tablet nowadays retails for double the price for what this tablet is worth. Here’s to hoping that this tablet eventually surfaces once Google I/O rolls around.

First BlackBerry 10 won’t have a physical Qwerty keypad

This may come as bad news to many and good news to some, but according to RIM, the first BlackBerry 10 will not have the trademark physical Qwerty keypad that has made the company’s phones so loved by BlackBerry loyalists. Instead, it will have something similar to what’s found on the iPhone and Galaxy S III, which is a touchscreen Qwerty keyboard.

We have yet to see whether this move will end tragically for the company since the tactile keypad was what made BlackBerry arguably the best smartphone for messaging and emails as well as different from its competitors. On the plus side, BlackBerry will obviously be getting something else in return—a bigger screen—which could actually result in non-BlackBerry users to finally make a switch.

RIM supposedly looking at splitting business in two

Ailing company RIM is supposedly looking to split its business into twain according to Reuters and The Sunday Times. The firm is supposedly looking at separating its messaging network from its handset manufacturing operations, after hiring JP Morgan and RBC Capital to look at “strategic options”. The handset division could potentially be sold to other companies or be listed as a separate company. Reuters have listed Facebook and Amazon as two potential buyers if ever it came to that. The messaging division could theoretically stand on its own feet, but not without opening up its doors to other ecosystems, most notably Windows Phone and Android (not iOS though, they already have their own messaging service through iMessage). It’s not clear what this will mean for the future of their next generation OS, BlackBerry 10, currently in development RIM currently developing its next generation OS, BlackBerry 10. We’re hoping that the new OS will invigorate the ecosytem enough that the sale wouldn’t be necessary, but that’s purely speculation at this point.

The New Ford Explorer Arrives in July

The Ford Explorer has just received a huge set of upgrades that make it the safest, most comfortable and smartest SUV in its class. Active Park Assist Makes parallel parking dead easy by finding a spot, and steers the Explorer into the spot. It gives peace of mind to even the most nervous drivers. Lane Keeping Technology makes sure you are on-track, and not only warns you when you are going off-course, but applies just enough force to the wheel to get you back in position.

One of the biggest causes of accidents on the road is the inability to see cars hidden in places you can’t quite see. The new Explorer gives you a hand by displaying an alert right at the side mirror when a vehicle enters your blind spot. When on cruise control, the new Explorer also makes sure you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you be easing up on the throttle to keep you sufficiently away from trouble. Once the road opens up, the Explorer senses it, and picks up speed once again. If a potential collision is detected, the Explorer adds necessary braking to avoid impact.

The new Explorer will be available starting July, and can be yours at 2,929,000, so start saving up for the best Explorer yet.

    Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY

[This review originally appeared in the November 2011 issue of Gadgets Magazine]

    By Michelle Callanta-Toledo

If looks can be deceiving then the Xperia PLAY’s design is guilty as charged. This device doesn’t look any different from other Android smartphones despite its game pad duality. It has an impressively large 4-inch touchscreen encased in a glossy black finish with silver trim along its side and chicly curved edges for that nice comfortable grip. Below the screen are four Android hot keys for the Back, Home, Menu, and Search functions. On the left side, you’ll find a USB port for the charger while on the right, you’ll find the volume arrows and two buttons that have L and R on them (obviously, left and right shoulder buttons for the game pad). At the back, you’ll find a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash and encased behind a rather flimsy and fragile back cover is the battery, SIM, and microSD slot.

But though they say “it’s what’s inside that counts,” in the case of the Xperia PLAY, it’s not what’s inside, but what lies beneath as the Xperia PLAY has a slide-out game pad which pretty much is the reason for its bulk but just a wee bit lighter than your Nintendo DS and PSP.

The entire pad is matte silver and looks very much like your typical game pad with the D-pad on the left and the familiar face buttons (triangle, circle, cross, and square) on the right. The Select and Start buttons are located to the lower right while a menu button sits in the lower left, and the left and right shoulder buttons on the top (right side when seen as a smartphone). In the middle of the game pad is a long inset oval with two circles inside it. These two touch-sensitive circles essentially replace the two analog joysticks.

The Xperia PLAY runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread so you get the easy-to-maneuver five customizable home screens and the crawling main menu that fades to black. It also offers user a faster keyboard and download management. Other features include Facebook and Twitter, text and multimedia messaging, Gmail and other e-mail, Google Maps 5.0, voice navigation, search, YouTube, the WebKit browser, and basic tools like a calendar and a calculator. The phone also comes with Office Suite for reading and editing Office documents. The phone also supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a speakerphone, and voice dialing but unfortunately, it doesn’t have and HDMI port and 4G. But that’s as a smartphone. To play games, you either access the Xperia PLAY app on the menu or slide open the game pad. It comes preloaded with Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior, FIFA 10, Star Battalion, Sims 3 and Crash Bandicoot. There’s also Tetris which you can only play using the touchscreen.

Maybe it’s important to know that I was never all that great a gamer nor am I a “seasoned” smartphone user. So perhaps that’s why it took awhile to get used to the Xperia PLAY. It took three days for me to figure out where the Inbox was (after I had accidently deleted all of my messages) and how to adjust the settings of my phone from the volume to the vibrate mode. Sometimes, while I typed a message, it would simply crash and a message would appear:”Sorry! The application messaging (process com.sonyericsson.conversations) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.”

The gaming part was fine. In fact, what made it so immersive were the brilliant 854×480-pixel FWVGA resolution display and 16 million colors that gave deep blacks, sharp graphics, and crisp text. It’s a great way to while away the time. And after a while of getting acquainted with the phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY does grow on you. You really just need to play with it.

Nintendo teams up with Namco Bandai for new Super Smash Bros. title

Nintendo announced at E3 that they would be working on a new installment of the Super Smash Bros. franchise for Wii U and 3DS. A recent update from Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed that they will be teaming up with Namco Bandai for the project.

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai will head the project and will be working alongside Namco Bandai producer Masaya Kobayashi and Yoshito Higuchi (director of Tales of Vesperia) to oversee the fourth installment of the Super Smash Bros. series. Tetsuya Akatsuka, sound and art director of the Soul Calibur franchise, will also be involved in the development.

Though the Super Smash Bros. franchise has made its dent in the fighting game category, Nintendo’s in for a little competition this time around. Earlier this year, the Sony team revealed that a Smash Bros-type fighting game featuring a multitude of PlayStation characters is in the works. The game will be called PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. We all know Namco Bandai is famed for a number of commercially successful fighting games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Dragon Ball Z and the Naruto series, so we anticipate that their contribution to the next Super Smash Bros. title will turn out well.

For now, we just have to hang tight and tune in to more updates on which Namco characters they’re going to throw in or if they’re going to include any of them at all.

    Nintendo announces 3DS XL

Nintendo introduced the newest model in its hand-held line up, the 3DS XL, which features a larger 4.88-inch 3D display and improved battery life compared to the regular 3DS. Aside from those enhancements, there isn’t much else separating the XL from its predecessor.

The last time Nintendo released a larger variant of a portable console was when they released the DSi XL that featured extra large screens and was targeted for the elderly and those who have trouble focusing on small displays. With the 3DS XL, its primary selling point is still the stereoscopic 3D display. According to Nintendo, the 3DS XL will sell without a basic AC adapter but will still come with a 4GB SD card.

The 3DS XL is priced at US $200 (about Php 8,400) and will come out within the next few months.
