New rumors about the iPhone 5

    0

More rumors regarding the iPhone 5’s specs have emerged recently from some credible sources, including talk of a modified Apple chip, more memory, a new chassis, and a bigger screen. Supposedly, the next iPhone will have a 4-inch screen—slightly larger than that of the iPhone 4’s 3.5-inch display. The source of the information also stated that the forthcoming device will sport a sleek design that’s quite different from the previous models and will probably require a unibody case.

Furthermore, the iPhone 5 is also expected to have 4G or LTE capability and another source reported that the next-generation release will have 1GB of memory and will be using a slightly modified version of the dual-core A5X processor used in the iPad 3. Lastly, and contrary to previous rumors, the iPhone 5 will supposedly be launched in August or September.

US Telcos band together to make a stolen phone database

Phone theft is becoming a huge problem for consumers in the US. In a move to try and reduce phone theft, major carriers in the US are banding together to create a database of sorts to help fight phone theft.

The database will be created and maintained by the major carreriers in the US and is designed to track and disable smartphones that have been reported stolen by customers. The carriers plan to deny stolen devices voice and data, which should deter anyone from stealing phones.

The Wall Street Journal reports that cellphone theft is fast becoming one of the gastest growing crimes in the US, and the new deal (which the US regulatory body Federal Communications Commission is a part of) means that the carriers should pool their databases together to be able to block devices across America.

There are also plans to share this particular stolen phone database to other countries and carriers, which should also cut down the export of stolen devices to other countries.

Hopefully this initiative also somehow manages to reach our shores, with both Smart (and by extension, Sun) and Globe cooperating to create a similar stolen phone database. While you can block devices locally when it’s stolen by reporting your stolen devices’ IMEI to the NTC, the process is slow and cumbersome. With a combined national database, it will be theoretically easier to block stolen cellphones locally, which is a huge problem in the Philippines.

HTC One X coming to the Philippines on Friday

We’ve been wondering when the HTC One X would be dropping on our shores, and here it is. We’ve received an invite for the HTC One X unveiling on Friday, April 13, and you can bet your little tushie that we’ll be there covering the event. While we know that the HTC One X is definitely coming, the same can’t be said about the two other members of the HTC One family. We’ve also heard news about an earlier HTC One X unveiling, though we can’t spill the beans on that one yet.

Gatefeeder: A cat’s key to a healthy diet

    0

Cats may not be as wildly affectionate and expressive as their other furry four-legged counterpart but they need just as much care and attention. And since these intelligent and clever pets aren’t as demanding or high-maintenance, it would make sense to give them a bit freedom especially when it comes to their eating habits. The Gatefeeder, invented by cat lover Philip Eu, is a  minimally designed controlled-access home feeding system which works with a collar-mounted Smart ID tag to limit proper servings to the proper pet.

The Gatefeeder helps organize meals in multiple-cat homes, especially when one of the crew may need medication.  It can also protect their cat’s food from pests or other cats.

The Gatefeeder controlled feeding system is now available for $250.

Facebook buys Instagram for $1 billion

After enjoying monumental growth in its userbase after releasing the Android version of its app, Instagram has once again managed to score a major victory today. Facebook has announced that it would be acquiring Instagram, for $1 billion in a combination of cash and shares of Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, posted about the transaction on his Timeline, saying that “I’m excited to share the news that we’ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook. For years, we’ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we’ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.”

“Every day that passes, we see more experiences being shared through Instagram in ways that we never thought possible,” said Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram in a blog post.  “It’s because of our dedicated and talented team that we’ve gotten this far, and with the support and cross-pollination of ideas and talent at a place like Facebook, we hope to create an even more exciting future for Instagram and Facebook alike.”

“It’s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We’ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We’ll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience.”
That doesn’t mean that Instagram will now close its doors to other social networks. Far from it. “We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience”, said Zuckerberg.  “We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.”

Fatman Mi-Tube makes vacuum tubes and your Bluetooth device make beautiful music together

Ask any audiophile what kind of amplifier gives the best result, and the answer will almost always be the same: traditional valve amplifiers. A company called Fatman has merged the superior audio quality of valve amplifiers with the modern technologies like wireless connectivity. The Fatman Mi-Tube is the latest product of this convergence old-meets-new, and delivers superior sound quality that you’ve probably haven’t seen (or heard) before. The Mi-Tube delivers a powerful 28W of audio per channel, with an output impedance of 4/8 Ohms and signal to noise ratio of 86dB. The amplifier also utilizes a radical new hybrid valve design, the basis of which was first suggested in a
theoretical paper produced over 50 years ago.

The Mi-Tube has two standard pairs of RCA phono inputs for connecting CD players and other line level sources, and Bluetooth connectivity – allowing Bluetooth capable devices to connect to the valve amplifier wirelessly.

Samsung is fast becoming the current Android king, is supposedly now taking pre-orders for Galaxy S III

We know Korean manufacturer Samsung is a major player in the smartphone space, but we’ve learned today just how many units it’s moving per quarter – Unwired View has said that the company is close to announcing that they’ve managed to sell over 40 million smartphones for the first quarter of this year, with stronger sales expected in Q2 with with the imminent release of the Galaxy S III. Russian Tech Blogger Eldar Murtazin has said that there’s already 10 million pre-orders from channel partners (note, not consumers) for the unreleased device.  The next Galaxy S3 is pegged to have an Exynos quad-core 1.5GHz CPU, have a hi-res display and sport a large 4.7-inch display.

4G PlayBook makes an appearance at CrackBerry forums

As nice as RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook is, it’s not a product that you’d expect to sport the latest connectivity features. Surprisingly enough, it seems that RIM is looking to inject new life into the aging tablet via LTE connectivity. A recent post made by a user at the CrackBerry forums suggest that RIM is looking to release a 4G version of the tablet, which is surprising, to say the least. While there’s a number of photos floating around in said forums, there’s not much known about it – but we would be very surprised if RIM didn’t at least update the internals to have it carry a bit of oomph, especially since there are quad-core tablets floating around now.

Tegra 4 slated to hit 1st quarter of next year, will reportedly have LTE

As fantastic as Tegra 3 is, it’s still lacking in a couple of places, namely the ability to use LTE. That’s going to change with the next iteration of the NVIDIA made silicon, according to a leaked roadmap from Chinese tech outfit VR-Zone. While the veracity of the report is suspect, NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang did say that we should expect a new version of Tegra every year. From the leak obtained by VR-Zone, the next iteration of Tegra will have LTE, as well as couple of SKUs that sport different speeds that should occupy all the segments of the market.

HTC is shelving Beats headphone bundle

Seems like HTC’s move to bundle Beats headphones in their devices is coming to an end – according to a CNET interview,  Martin Fichter, an HTC product executive said that customers don’t really choose smartphones because of the headphones bundled in. “An accessory like the headphone doesn’t factor in when someone is buying a smartphone,” he said to CNET. “If they want a Beats headphone, they’ll buy it directly.”

That doesn’t mean this is the end of Beats technology in their devices, as you don’t simply throw away a 300 million investment because of some difficulties. HTC says that it’ll still integrate Beats Audio technology in the phones, something that you’ll probably see when the new HTC devices pop up in the Philippines (which we guarantee is very, very soon). And while HTC hasn’t completely closed down the bundled Beats headphones route, Martin said that  it wasn’t something the company is considering in the near term.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin spotted wearing Google Glasses

Like many ambitious projects, we couldn’t help but be skeptical about Google’s mindblowing augmented reality project, Project Glass. That is until we stumbled onto Robert Scoble’s Google+ post about a charity event he attended with Google co-founder Sergey Brin who was spotted wearing a prototype Google Glass.

Robert says that the device is a prototype, and Sergey’s right eye had a bluish light flashing off of his right eyeball while they talked, indicating that the device was indeed functional during the event. Robert says that the glasses are “Very real. Very light looking. Most of the people around us had no idea that these glasses are pretty special.”

Photographer Thomas Hawk managed to get some hi-res shots of the Google co-founder sporting the glasses, and our inner nerd hopes and prays that the AR tech comes sooner rather than later.

Newly developed memory chips are transparent and foldable

Dr. James M. Tour, a synthetic organic chemist at Houston’s Rice University, along with his colleagues, have developed a new type of memory chip that is transparent, can be folded like paper, and withstand temperatures of up to 538 degrees Celsius. They believe that it could replace flash memory in thumb drives, smartphones, and computers.

The new chip is made of an inert insulating layer of silicon oxide that is configured with two terminals per bit of information as opposed to the three terminals that standard chips use, and this allows for more data storage within the same footprint. Because they are flexible and transparent, these chips can be integrated into the touch-screen of future devices, further saving space and also making the screens less fragile. This means that devices could be made even thinner than they already are today.

Dr. Tour and his colleagues are hoping to test these new chips in the high radiation of outer space at the International Space Station in July. They are also talking to electronics manufacturers to get them onto future devices.

Solar-powered cover for your Kindle devices

SolarFocus recently launched a solar powered case called the SolarKindle and is currently compatible with the Kindle Touch and Kindle 4. The e-Reader cover won the Innovation Award at CES 2012 earlier this year, and features a built-in solar panel, an integrated 1500 mAh lithium-polymer reserve battery, and an LED reading lamp.

With just one hour of direct sunlight, the SolarKindle is able to provide up to three days of lighted reading time on your Kindle devices. The energy gathered by the case’s battery can also be transferred to the Kindle’s battery to lengthen reading time, with one hour of charge providing around 10 days of extended battery life.

The cover for the Kindle Touch weighs only 215 g, while the one for the Kindle 4 weighs 250 g. The SolarKindle cases can be ordered through the SolarFocus website here http://www.solarmio.com/en/default.aspx at a retail price of US $ 79.99 (approximately Php 3,360).

Independent artists line up to be promoted by the Pirate Bay

Pirate Bay has always been under fire from record executives and big name studios in Hollywood because of the supposed harm it does unto their business, but it seems that independent artists and musicians beg to disagree. TorrentFreak is reporting that almost 5000 independent artists have signed up to be promoted by the world’s largest torrent site, with the exposure given to them creating a large boost in name recognition.

Of course this being Pirate Bay, the promotion comes with a price – the artists need to offer something in return (an album or whatever) for their prospective audience. George Barnett, an artist who signed up for the promotion service when the Torrent site rolled it out earlier this year, says that he has experienced a boost in fans – 4,000 new Facebook fans and over 85,000 views for his video.

During an interview with TorrentFreak, Pirate Bay’s Winston said that the promotion has been a huge success. “Thus far we’ve done 14 regular campaigns in 3 countries each and 8 worldwide promotions. When we started the project the plan was to do a few worldwide promotions a year, but the submissions have been too good. So now we’re gonna do the worldwide promos every weekend and some regulars every now and then.”

This new type of distribution and discovery changes the rules somewhat. Before, artists had to rely on studios and big name labels to get their name out in the wild, today independent artists who don’t want to sign with major labels and compromise their integrity now have a bigger and better tool to market themselves. The rules for discovering and promoting music and videos are changing – and a torrent site is leading the way. Who’da thunk it?

Girls Around Me app – genius or just plain scary

    0

While some apps are mostly fun, educational, entertaining, and helpful, there are just some apps that cross the line. One such app is Girls Around Me — a geolocation-based maps app that shows users what girls are in their vicinity, what they look like, information about them and ways to get in touch with them.

Once connected with Foursquare, the app designates the user’s location and then creates a Google map of who is in their immediate surrounding area, in a ratio of guys to girls.

Online people are outraged, calling the app “horrible”  and many people are criticizing the app saying it is geared toward stalkers and invades peoples’ privacy. One person tweeted, that app is “one of many legitimate reasons not to ever use Facebook, Foursquare.” The individuals who are yielded in the results are unaware they are being tracked and do not have the ability to opt-in or opt-out.

While it may make it easier to find out potential dates and to save yourself the anxiety and horrors of “blind dates,” the potential stalkers who may use the app for less-than-innocent purposes still outweigh the innocence of simply looking for “the one” in your neighborhood.
