    33rd Bangkok International Motor Show

Bangkok, Thailand — Ford Group Philippines brought 20 motoring and tech scribes to witness the ASEAN media unveiling of the All-new Ford Focus at the Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel, a day before the general press launch at the 33rd Bangkok International Motor Show. The All-new Ford Focus, which will be available in the Philippines in the second half of 2012, is expected to set the new standard in the region. With an unmatched combination of smart technologies, outstanding fuel economy, expressive design, responsive performance and high levels of craftsmanship and occupant safety, normally only found in mid to high end vehicles.

For the second year in a row, the ongoing Bangkok International Motor Show is being held at the Challenger Hall 1 to 3, IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. Divided into five sections namely motor vehicles, converted cars, motorcycles, accessories and miscellaneous products and services, and auto tuners, the show literally has something for every demographic. With 130 exhibitors from about 11 different countries sharing the net surface area of 167,160m2 — you can bet it’s one gigantic show.

Proving to be an important milestone after last year’s devastating tsunami in Japan and horrendous floods in Thailand, the latest iteration of the Bangkok International Motor Show only proves that the Thai automotive industry is back on track.

Smart strengthens Windows phone lineup, locks up Nokia Lumia 710, Lumia 610 and Lumia 900 coming soon

Nokia’s Lumia range of phones is hitting the Philippines, hard. While Globe has managed to grab the exclusive rights to the Lumia 800, Smart has gone ahead and locked down the Lumia 710, which the telco is now offering up for pre-order at their website here. Smart has also announced that it’ll also be getting the budget Lumia 610 and Nokia’s current flagship smartphone, the Lumia 900 soon. The Lumia 710 will be available to Smart postpaid subscribers via their limited edition Plan 1000, with a monthly amortization of Php 450 for 24 months. Curiously, Smart’s move to lock-up the Lumia 900 also rings a couple of bells with us in regards to their LTE deployment, as the Lumia 900 has an LTE version out in the US market that will theoretically work with their own LTE network. Will the telco announce the Lumia 900 with their LTE service? We’ll just have to wait and see.

NU Skin: Taking the science of anti-aging to a whole new level

    0

With all of the anti-aging creams and cosmetic services available in the market, it is obvious that though we don’t mind the wisdom that comes with age, we could all do away with the wrinkles that come with it. Since we have yet to find that elusive “fountain of youth,” we can only hope that there will one day come a product that will give our aging face and body a bit of a reprieve, and hopefully without having to go under the knife.

    Galvanic Spa and Transformation Set

Now, using ageLOC science, NU Skin has developed a way to target aging on a genetic level.

Developed by Nu Skin in collaboration with leading scientists, ageLOC science is based on the discovery of internal sources of aging that contribute to an aging appearance, what Nu Skin calls age-related super markers, or arSuperMarkers. Nu Skin’s exclusive ageLOC science targets these arSuperMarkers—the ultimate sources of aging that can influence how we age.

Based on this discovery, Nu Skin is able to identify critical arSuperMarkers called Youth Gene Clusters, which are functional groups of genes that regulate how we appear to age. Only ageLOC’s proprietary science understands how to reset these Youth Gene Clusters to their youthful patterns of activity.

Nu Skin also developed an app called ageLOC ME that can show you how you can possibly look when you’re older and how you can look if you use the NU Skin products.

Watch out for our May issue as I review the Galvanic Spa and see if this really is the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth.

    Review: HP Folio 13

Today we’re reviewing another ultrabook, and though the product segment is fast becoming cluttered with thin, ultraportable notebooks, HP’s offering has enough features to stand out from the crowd. The manufacturer claims that the Folio 13 has the legs to deliver 9.5 hours of usable battery life while still maintaining a relatively thin 18mm profile.

The overall design of the Folio 13 is relatively safe, compared to the other ultrabooks that came before it. But considering it’s currently being aimed at enterprise users, the design decision is completely understandable. That doesn’t mean that the Folio 13 is ugly, far from it – it’s brushed aluminium lid is pretty to look at, the overall build quality of the device is pretty spot on. Unlike other ultrabooks, the Folio 13 isn’t completely swathed in aluminium, as the lower chassis is actually plastic, with aluminium trimmings on the top. The Folio 13 uses a 13.3-inch, HD LED display with a resolution of about 1366×768. The keyboard is an illuminated island-type deal, with plenty of travel and is gloriously comfortable to type on. As is par for the case with ultrabooks, the Folio 13 is relatively light, and clocks in at only 1.5 kilos.

Under the hood, you get an Intel Core i5-2467M processor that’s pumping out about 1.6GHz of computing power, paired with 4GB of DDR3 memory. The Folio 13 uses a 128GB SSD drive to store everything, which is probably also the reason why the device posts extremely fast boot times (less than 20 seconds). The Folio 13 isn’t lacking in ports, as it has 2 USB ports, HDMI and an Ethernet port – essential for business users.

With the relatively fast Intel Core i5 processor inside and adequate memory, there wasn’t a doubt in our minds that the Folio 13 would perform brilliantly. While the ultrabook isn’t about to smoke gaming PCs in graphics performance, it did well on every other task that we put it through, which included browsing, viewing HD videos on both VLC and YouTube. Like we mentioned earlier, typing on the Folio 13 was a very pleasant experience – which isn’t always the case for ultrabooks.

The Folio 13 also managed to get one thing right that we’ve mostly abandoned hope on – the trackpad. The Folio 13’s trackpad is very precise, and although it was a bit stiff to press, it also had one thing that we always complained about – a left and right click separator.

While HP posted a battery claim of about 9.5 hours, we weren’t able to replicate that particular feat on our own tests. We did however manage to enjoy about 8 hours of usable battery life with typical use, which is pretty damn impressive in its own right, considering a lot of ultrabooks struggle to reach the 6 hour mark, let alone 8.

That doesn’t mean that the Folio 13 doesn’t have its own share of niggles, of course. For one, the screen isn’t as good as we’d hoped, which easily gets drowned out outdoors even on the highest brightness setting. Viewing angles are also pretty limited, and you’ll constantly try to find a sweet spot when it comes to screen positioning for the Folio 13 when you’re using it in a place where there’s plenty of ambient lighting. The Folio 13 also becomes a bit warm during use – not enough to burn you of course, but warm enough to make you uncomfortable when it’s resting on your lap.

So is the Folio 13 THE ultrabook you’ve been waiting for? It certainly has the goods – great performance, excellent keyboard and trackpad as well as long battery endurance. It’s not perfect, of course – but it’s pretty damn close. The HP Folio 13 retails for Php 55,990.

    What’s Hot:

    Excellent design and build quality

    Long battery life

    Excellent keyboard

    Excellent trackpad

    Great performance

    What’s Not:

    Bad viewing angles

Gets a bit warm during use

    Bottomline:

The HP Folio 13 isn’t perfect, but considering its performance during its time with us, it’s currently the ultrabook that’s on the top of our wishlist.

    Review: Philips SHL5000

    By Steven Vea

An increasing number of people are relying on their portable media players to provide them their daily dose of entertainment. Whether you’re traveling to or from somewhere, the potential of prolonged hours wearing headphones deem it necessary that they must be equally comfortable and sonically excellent at the same time. And they have to look good as well.

Filed under Philip’s Ear Gear Style Range, the SHL5000 headband headphones certainly fit the category. Even while encased in its packaging, one will instantly realize that style was heavily invested into this product’s design. Available in five different colors, this reviewer received the crimson red adorned with black matte trim (also available in orange, green, white and black). While these headphones are definitely candy for the eyes, they are not extravagant and still retain the charm of what is modernly minimal. The very simplicity of its design will surely garner notice, yet has the charm to seamlessly blend in as well, which could potentially cater to a lot of people’s tastes.

The headphones are very lightweight and extremely compact, especially once they are folded up for transport. Of course some sense of durability is sacrificed for the sake of portability, but the SHL5000s feels sturdy enough to withstand quite a bit of punishment, and could be a perfect companion for traveling both within the metro or the great outdoors.

If you’re looking for a pair of headphones that you can literally use the whole day, look no further. The SHL5000’S padded ear cushions will feel like clouds upon your ears, as this reviewer was personally able to wear them for five consecutive hours without feeling any ear strain. The steel spring headband is flexible and will adjust comfortably to whoever is wearing them. Even when they’re simply hanging around your neck, the headphones barely feel like they’re there. Philips certainly adhered to one of this product’s advertised traits: “You’ll forget you’re wearing them!”

The sound quality of the SHL5000 is satisfactory. It is not disappointing, but not spectacular either, which is to be expected from a pair of headphones in this price range. For a product that was advertised as having extra bass, the 30mm sound drivers do not exactly give a bass rich experience, although they did boost the overall volume significantly. The lower frequencies sometimes sound quite boomy and with low-mids that have a tendency to sound sonically “tinny.”  However, with respect to higher frequencies of the spectrum, these headphones come out crisp, clear and have a character unlike similar products in its brand and class.

The SHL5000 also excels in its noise-canceling abilities, for even with an MP3 player at only half its volume limit, any outside interference was successfully blocked out. Combine this with the headphones’ comfortable ear cushions, and you have a set of cans perfect for long hours of steady sound tripping.

All in all, the Philips SHL5000 would be a great purchase for those looking for a pair of headphones that look great, are kind to the wallet, but still pack a punch.

    SPECIFICATIONS:

    Cable Connection: Two-parallel, symmetric
    Cable length: 1.2 m
    Connector: 3.5 mm stereo
Finishing of connector: 24k Gold plated

    What’s Hot:
    • Extremely comfy ear cushions
    • Lightweight

    What’s Not:
    • Lack of bass definition

    Bottomline:
The Philips SHL5000s are great economical headphones. They are comfortable, stylish and provide a good sound in relation to its unburdening price.

RIM reports over 1 million PlayBooks have now been sold

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook has not had an easy life, but ever since the PlayBook OS two-dot-oh update rolled around, there’s been a lot more interest in it. How much interest? Well, the Canadian firm reported in its quarterly earnings call that it’s managed to sell about 500,000 of their PlayBooks, which, when combined with the ones now in the wild, totals to a little over 1 million. The BlackBerry PlayBook is now enjoying a revival of sorts now that the basic functionality that everyone was expecting (native email app, calendar, Android apps) are now present after the 2.0 update. That doesn’t mean that the company is out of the woods yet of course, though current CEO Thorsten Heins is now trying to shake things up to make things better.

AVT’s Android Radio AN6B01 takes Android on the road

While at the Manila International Autoshow last Thursday, we managed to stumble on AVT’s latest in-car gadget – the Android Radio AN6B01. In a nutshell, the device is basically what’s advertised – it’s an Android powered head-unit with a 6.2-inch WVGA touchscreen display, powered by slightly modified Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a Cortex A8 1GHz ARM processor. From what we could see during the demo, this particular head unit is a full fledged Android device, capable of installing and running apps, as well as being able to control everything from your phone calls (when you link your phone with it) to your car’s navigation and entertainment system. We only managed to spend a few minutes with the device, but AVT assured us that they’ll be sending it to our office (hopefully attached to a car) to find out what it can really do.
