LG’s D2500 Cinema TV closer to production, glasses-less 3D coming soon

Glasses-less 3D. That is the goal of TV manufacturers now, and we’re pretty sure all of them are racing to see who can get a viable product out to market first that doesn’t make a mockery of your bank account. It seems that LG is almost there, as the Korean firm has just sent us a notice that their D2500 Cinema TV has just been certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratories) for product safety. LG says that their product is the first of its kind to be certified by UL, which was officially presented to LG at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

“Our glasses-free CINEMA 3D monitors will continue to lead LG in the glasses-free 3D market,” said Havis Kwon, President and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company. “We will strengthen our glasses-free 3D product line-up to further distance ourselves from the competition.”

After that little victory, it’s only a matter of time before we see LG’s glasses-less 3D product offerings pop up in our shores.

iPad 3 will have LTE, sharper screen and a quad-core processor, now in production – Bloomberg

We usually don’t like stroking the fires of iPad rumors for the sake of web traffic, opting instead for more solid reports from reputable sources, but this rumor is pretty solid. Bloomberg has reported that the next iteration of the iPad will have LTE capability (aka 4G) and will sport a sharper screen according to three people familiar with the product. Furthermore, it seems that production has already started on the units this month, which will reach full swing by February. The new screen will supposedly have greater resolutions than HD TVs today, which leads us to believe that it would possibly have a 2048 x 1536 resolution display.

So what does this mean for a market such us ours that doesn’t have commercially available LTE networks(yet)? Well, it only makes sense for Apple to make a version of the iPad 3 without LTE, as many other markets currently don’t have LTE yet. It may also mean that the two telcos will have to talk to Apple and ask them to make a version for their own LTE networks as the nuances of the LTE spectrum mean that you can’t just take an LTE device tailored to work on a certain network from the US and expect it to work here.

Lenovo’s K91 Smart TV has Android Ice Cream Sandwich inside

There’s three main products in the spotlight at this year’s CES – tablets, ultrabooks and smart TVs. And while Lenovo isn’t a brand you’d necessarily think of when it comes to TVs, they’ve announced that they’ll be making their own smart TV, dubbed the K91. What makes this little TV stand out is the inclusion of Google’s Android OS, specifically Ice Cream Sandwich, in the mix. This 55-inch TV sports a Qualcomm 1.5GHz dual-core 8060 Snapdragon CPU to power the ICS experience, as well as a 5-megapixel webcam embedded in the bezel for video interaction, access to the Google Marketplace and WiFi capability.

The remote control of the K91 will also sport a ton of bells of whistles too, which includes a 5-way directional pad, voice recognition and a motion sensor. No word on when the device will be available. Will this nifty TV be Lenovo’s chance to make it big in the TV market?

Cooler Master’s new Cosmos II tower makes your rig look like a pro

New Year, new rig. At least, that would be the ideal set-up of course. And with AMD’s release of the absolutely monstrous Radeon 7970 graphics card and the impending release of Intel’s newest Ivy Bridge processors, a new PC rig might just be in the cards for some. If you’re one of the privelaged few that loves building beastly rig at the start of the year, you might want to throw all those expensive parts into Cooler Master’s latest offering, the Cosmos II.

Packed with enough features that’ll satisfy even the most diehard PC builder, the Cosmos II is THE tower to own if you want the very best. Features include support for up to 10 fans and 13(!) HDDs, 4 way SLI, XL-ATX / SSI CEB / SSI EEB board support and has all the necessary holes and brackets for watercooling.

Sony Xperia S – Playstation certified, 720p display dual-core smartphone

It seems that Sony’s divorce from Ericsson is official, as the newest device – the Xperia S – from the Japanese firm is devoid of the partnership’s branding. That doesn’t mean that the Xperia S is short on specs – quite the opposite actually. The Xperia S is equipped with a 4.3-inch, 720p display, 1.5GHz dual core processor and a massive 12-megapixel Exmor R camera sensor.

The Xperia S is also Playstation certified and like many other devices this year, has NFC built-in. Unfortunately, people are saying that this device will only have Android 2.3 on-board when it launches, though Sony says that an upgrade to ICS will come. Like other devices on display at CES, expect this particular device to drop in the second quarter of 2012.

Meet the Asus MeMo 370T: 7-inch Tegra 3 tablet for $250

Tegra 3 is barely out of the gate, but Asus wants everyone to have a slice of NVIDIA’s multi-core experience at a price point that’s really hard to ignore. The MeMo 370T is a 7-inch tablet deal (similar to our recently reviewed Galaxy Tab 7 Plus) with a 1,280×800-resolution IPS screen and powered by Android Ice Cream Sandwich and NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor. The best part? Asus has said that the MeMo 370T will retail for $250 (or about Php 11,000). We don’t care if you don’t like Android or if you love iOS – Php 11,000 for a modern, top-tier device from a premium manufacturer will make you stop and think really hard about a purchase, which is ultimately what Asus wants you to do. If it was released with a dual-core processor (like most 7-inch tablets nowadays) it wouldn’t be a show stopper but the combination of Tegra 3 paired with ICS and the low $250 price point makes it the talking point of CES when talking about tablets (coincidentally the MeMo 370T won the Best of CES award). The MeMo 370T is set to land on the 2nd quarter of 2012.

Dell unveils their ultrabook – the XPS 13

Just like clockwork, Dell has unveiled their entry to the ultrabook category – the XPS 13. Just like its competitors, Dell’s offering is an ultrathin device, which measures at only 6mm at it’s thinnest point. Dell has opted to go with an alumnium – carbon fiber composite mix instead of an all metal design that its competitors use, which cuts the overall weight of the device down to about 1.36 kilos. The XPS 13 uses a 13.3-inch HD WLED, 300-nit (1366×768) display that is edge-to-edge hardened Gorilla Glass, with two possible processor choices: an Intel Core i5 2467M or a beefier, i7 2637M. Users will also be able to choose between 128 GB SSD or 256GB SSD for storage. Regardless of the configuration though, the XPS 13 will ship with 4GB DDR3 SDRAM memory. The XPS 13 will retail in select markets in March. Dell has not mentioned the price of this bad boy unfortunately.

Google introduces Search plus Your World

    0

Today, Google is introducing Search plus Your World for searches on Google.com in English. This trio of new search features brings your world, rich with people and information, into search. Search plus Your World helps you find your own stuff on the web, the people you know and things they’ve shared with you, as well as the people you don’t know but might want to … all from one search box.

We’re transforming Google into a search engine that understands not only content, but also people and relationships. We began this transformation with Social Search, and today we’re taking another big step in this direction by introducing these three new features:

    1. Personal Results, which enables you to find information just for you, such as Google+ photos and posts—both your own and those shared specifically with you, that only you will be able to see on your results page;
    2. Profiles in Search, both in autocomplete and results, which enables you to immediately find people you’re close to or might be interested in following; and,
    3. People and Pages, which helps you find people profiles and Google+ pages related to a specific topic or area of interest, and lets you follow them with just a few clicks.

Together, these features combine to create Search plus Your World, which will become available over the next few days to people who are signed in and searching on https://www.google.com in English.

    Security, transparency and control
We set a high bar for security and privacy for Search plus Your World. Searches by signed-in users on Google.com are secured by SSL encryption by default. This means when you’re signed in to Google, your search results—including your private content—are protected by the same high standards of encryption as your messages in Gmail.

We also want to be transparent about how these features work and give you control over how to use them. With today’s changes, we provide visibility and control settings similar to those in Google+. For example, personal results are clearly marked as Public, Limited or Only you.

We’re also introducing a toggle button on the results page that lets you see search results without personal content. With a single click, you can see an unpersonalized view of search results — no results from your friends, no private information and no personalization of results based on your Web History.

This toggle button works for an individual search session, or you can make this the default in your Search Settings.

For more details about Search plus Your World, including a video demonstration and screenshots, visit the Official Google Blog.

Asus Transformer Prime (with ICS) first impressions, hands on

Asus dropped by our office today with a particularly nice surprise: their Transformer Prime tablet topped with the delicious cherry that is Ice Cream Sandwich. Though we only got a few minutes to play with the device (Asus wouldn’t let us have it for a proper review, no matter how much we begged them to) we went away with the sneaking suspicion that it’ll be getting high marks from us once we get it back for a proper review. The reasons?

It’s thinner and prettier than last year’s model

We’re not saying that the original Transformer was ugly. It’s just that the new Transformer Prime is just so, so much nicer to look at. Asus took the whole look of the Zenbook and applied it to the Transformer Prime and the results are fantastic. Build quality is top notch, and with an overall thickness of just 8.3mm (tablet only), it’s one of thinnest tablets out in the market today.

    Faster than the competition

While the Transformer Prime won’t be the fastest Android tablet in the block in a few months time, it’s still currently the fastest Android device right now, thanks to its Tegra 3 processor. Don’t believe us? Take a gander at the benchmark we took of the device while it was in the office.

Ice Cream Sandwich looks better than Honeycomb

Coincidentally, the Asus Transformer Prime is our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich, as we haven’t gotten hold of a Samsung Galaxy Nexus yet. Our verdict? It’s so, so pretttyyy. Seriously. The transitions are beautiful and the screen! Oh the screen. It’s simply glorious.

Okay, we’re done gussying up to the Transformer Prime. With that out of the way, here’s some of the things we didn’t like about it:

It’s going to be a bit expensive

Asus’ rep today told me that unlike the original Transformer, the local version of the Transformer Prime will only be available with the dock, meaning you won’t be able to buy just the tablet itself. With taxes and all we estimate the Transformer Prime to retail at around 31-33K by the time it gets released, which should be next month.

    It has GPS issues

Early adopters are reporting that the Transformer Prime has GPS issues, mainly stemming from the metal design of the device. Asus has already acknowledged the problem and are working on a redesigned device for better GPS performance, though it’s still up in the air when that new version will come out (or if that’s the version of the device coming here).

That’s it. We’re expecting the unit to come back next week, so watch out for our review. Until then, enjoy some of the pictures of the device below.

Samsung’s WB850F Wi-Fi camera lets you upload images without using your PC

Since most of the pictures we take today end up in Facebook and other social networks we own, it kind of makes sense for a camera to come with Wi-Fi built-in, right? Meet Samsung’s WB850F, their newest Wi-Fi enabled camera that’ll allow you to take photos and upload them immediately without the use of a PC. Aside from near instantaneous sharing, the WB850F is armed with a  21x super zoom lens and a large 16 Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor for reduced image noise and distortion. There’s a 3-inch VGA AMOLED screen at the back, as well as GPS functionality. No word on local pricing and availability yet.
