Rovio rejects $2.25 billion acquisition by Zynga

We all know how wildly successful Rovio’s Angry Bird series of mobile games have been. If you’re an Android or iOS phone owner, chances are you have a copy of their game on your device right now. And as with any successful business in the tech world today, there’s a lot of companies that want in on that action. One of those companies is Zynga, the wildly successful Facebook game developer responsible for hundreds of farms and poker tables for the social network. Unfortunately for Zynga, Rovio wasn’t in the mood to sell – according to TechCrunch, the Finnish company walked away from a $2.25 billion offer from the casual game company. The reason why they rejected the offer isn’t clear, though the report from TechCrunch opined that it may have been a clash of cultures – the nickel and dime approach by Zynga doesn’t mesh well with Rovio’s free for everyone mantra for their games.

Teaser: Dec./Jan. issue takes you back to the future

“I’m so sorry, I’m not usually like this. You just really caught me at a bad time,” Iza apologized between muffled coughs. Sick, tired, and feeling absolutely terrible, Ms. Iza Calzado still managed to make it to her Gadgets photoshoot, even after having cancelled and postponed her other obligations. For all it was worth, I told her she was a trooper. She smiled.

The following day, her father had passed away. And though we at Gadgets were deeply saddened upon learning the news, we don’t think there could’ve been a better model to usher us into the future – a future filled with hope, love, and the strength to overcome even the most trying of adversities.

Four pinoy hackers arrested over AT&T hacking attacks

Reuters is reporting that four Filipino hackers have been arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) over the hacking attack on US telecom giant AT&T. The attack cost the company $2 million dollars in fraudulent calls to premium-rate services, which the CIDG says that the group then diverts to a Saudi-based militant group. The four hackers, identified as Macnell Gracilla, Francisco Manalac, Regina Balura and Paul Michael Kwan. Reuters notes that weak cybercrime laws and poor technical capabilities makes our country an ideal base of operations for organised crime syndicates involved in cyber pornography, cyber sex dens, illegal gambling, credit card fraud and identity theft.

Government website National Commission of Culture and Arts hacked by PrivateX

The hacker collective known as PrivateX has struck again, with the group managing to penetrate the Government website for the National Commission of Culture and Arts. You’ll be able to see the intro for the website http://www.ncca.gov.ph/, but once you’re past the flash intro, you’ll be treated to the webpage above, along with a catchy rap tune about Anonymous. We have little information about why PrivateX targeted the website, but this isn’t the first time that the group has done this. The group has targeted and successfully hacked the Office of the Vice President and the Food and Drug Administration back in July, wishing President Aquino luck before his SONA address. The attack also highlights the need for tighter security for government websites, which as PrivateX has demonstrated, are still able to be penetrated by hackers.

Holiday shoppers in California and Virginia tracked via their cellphones

Here’s a bit of news that should delight mall owners and absolutely terrify people with tin hats on their heads – it seems that two malls in Virginia and California are using shopper’s phones to track them as they move through their mall. The technology, called Footpath Technolog,y aims to help mall operators precisely identify the foot traffic of people as they shop, to allow them to precisely pinpoint where to put shops, amenities and other mall niceties. Armed with the information, mall owners can now now precisely tell where the most amount of foot traffic is and deploy stores accordingly. And while the technology can pinpoint a shopper within a few meters, Footpath’s company, Path Intelligence, says that the information taken from shopper’s cellphones are completely anonymous, with no personal data being taken. The malls also tell their customers that they are being tracked in advance via multiple signs scattered throughout the mall, with instructions to turn off their phone if they want to opt out.

    1

Android users have always had a leg up over BlackBerry users in terms of functionality, especially when it came to sharing their data connection to other devices via the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality present in the latest builds of Android. Well, BlackBerry Bold 9900 users need not be envious, as a leaked ROM from RIM  (version 7.1.0.74) purportedly brings Wi-Fi hotspot functionality to the device. If you’re the sort that knows your way around the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, you can download the ROM on the links below to test it out on your own device. Don’t forget to tell us how it is, ‘mmkay? Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus hands-on and first impressions

    1

Samsung’s first tablet, the Galaxy Tab, was the company’s first ever entry into the world of slates. Since then, the company has produced tablets in a multitude of sizes, from 10.1 to 8.9, and has dabbled in the smartphone-tablet hybrid genre that the recently released Galaxy Note belongs to. Samsung apparently is revisiting the device that got their tablet efforts off the ground in the form of the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus.

The Tab 7 Plus takes a lot of design cues from it’s bigger brother, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The white back and silver plastic trimmings are there, along with a thin profile of 9.9mm which is an improvement over the old Tab’s 12mm thickness. The 7-inch screen has improved as well, and though it retains the old display resolution of the original (600 x 1024), the Tab 7 Plus now uses a PLS LCD capacitive touchscreen rather than a TFT based one.

Internally, the Tab 7 Plus is better too – it sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor with Android 3.2 right out of the bat, instead of Froyo that was in the original.

The Tab 7 Plus still retains the original’s 3-megapixel camera, though the front facing camera has received a slight upgrade to 2 megapixels as opposed to the original’s 1.3.

The Tab 7 Plus is also capable of taking a SIM card, and is fully 3G capable.

That’s it for now, we’ll post our full review of the device in about a week’s time.

Acer will raise notebook prices by 2-3% says paper, Asus to follow

We knew it wouldn’t take long till the hard drive shortage caused by the floods in Thailand would affect prices of devices that used HDDs, and sadly, here it is. Chinese-language Apple Daily reports that have reported that Acer is looking at raising notebook prices by NT$500-700 (US$16-23) which is about 2-3% for their newly made stock of notebooks for December. Another Taiwanese company, Asus, is also looking at raising the prices of their notebooks, though by how much is still anybody’s guess. Lin has pointed out that Acer’s HDD stock for November was almost depleted, meaning their new notebooks will now be made with the higher priced HDD whose value has risen because of the shortages. We’ve also heard of anecdotal evidence of local stores raising hard drive prices, so if you didn’t heed our advice to buy gadgets before the prices rose, it’d be best to hold of on your purchase until the prices stabilize sometime in Q2 of 2012.

Take a look “Into the Minds of Women Who Game Online”

    0

I was never a big “online” gamer but I did love to play videogames along with the rest of the boys during the days of Atari, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Play Station 1 (I stopped there). And even though I still like to play Final Fantasy on my DS and Angry Birds (with a vengeance) on my iPod Touch, I don’t think I can truly consider myself a gamer. But these stats by GameHouse might just be accurate if I were to look at how videogames affected my life.

‘Into the Minds of Women Who Game Online’ shows an illustrated chart examining the lives of those who play online games, 55% of which are women. According to the infographic, female online gamers seem more social, more likely to be in a relationship, and have a more “active” sex life than with their female non-gaming counterparts. Women who also play online games tend to (paradoxically enough) be more active when it comes to engaging in a form of physical exercise, contrary to the belief that gamers just sit around all day and become susceptible to heart attacks.

With the aforementioned stats, you can totally put me under “female gamer.”

YouTube has a new look; better Google+ and Facebook integration

    0

We noticed something new with our YouTube account today. Seems like the site has gone through some major overhaul, and now sports a improved homepage that makes it easier for you to track your friends activity through a multitude of social networking sites. There are now three main elements of the site: the left column where you’ll see all account related things (your channel, subscriptions, connected social networking accounts), the middle column where you’ll be seeing your friend’s activity (stuff your friends shared, liked and favorited) and the right column where YouTube suggests video for you to watch. One thing that we noticed was that once you connect your Facebook account to your YouTube, your friends will be able to see your activity on the site (what you watched, favorited and liked) similar to the “frictionless” sharing mantra that other sites are now rolling out. Thankfully it seems you can opt out of the whole “share everything what you’re doing on YouTube” thing if you wanted to and just log-out and watch videos anonymously. Do you like the changes YouTube has made? Sound off in the comments.
