Google helps Japan quake victims by adding Person Finder

The devastating earthquake and tsunami combo in Japan has left a lot of people worried about the status of their beloved family members living in hard hit areas. Many can’t contact family membersand because of the ongoing rolling blackouts and unreliable communication networks, communication is difficult, at best. Google has stepped up and created the Google Person Finder, a handy little web based app that allows you to search for information about loved ones and colleagues, and even post information about quake victims that you’ve currently come in contact with. You can search for people via their name and mobile number, or add information about people if you’ve managed to contact someone and want to post their current status. Good on you, Google.

Don’t just “like” it; “love” it.

    0

As we are in dire need of more love in the world, Virgin Mobile and singer/actress Mandy Moore have teamed up to bring the “love button” to Facebook.

“There’d been a rise in discussion about why there isn’t a love button on Facebook. So we polled them and 75 per cent said ‘yeah, we’d love to have a love button,’” said Nathan Rosenberg, chief marketing officer at Virgin Mobile Canada, which is owned by Bell.

A most lovable Mandy Moore, Disney’s “Tangled” star and singer who gave you hits like, “Cry” and “I Wanna Be With You” (my personal favorites), believes there should be a way to express our feelings more deeply. “With a Love Button, I’d get to share those special posts, pages and photos that I don’t just like – I love.”

So join the movement and start showing some love.

It’s what the world needs now.

Report concludes that Piracy is a problem of global pricing, not enforcement

    2

Here’s something to chew on: a report by the Social Science Research Council concludes that media piracy can’t be halted by stringent enforcement of IP, and describes the issue as more of a global pricing problem than anything else. The study was conducted on several emerging economies, including Russia, India and Mexico and found that people in said countries aren’t exactly what you’d call lawless or morally challenged, even in countries that had extremely high piracy rates. Its just that citizens of these countries can’t justify a purchase of a regular, original DVD that retails for say, $15 when you consider that that amount of money is a fair chunk of change in these nations. To address the problem, the report says that the pricing of these particular goods need to be adjusted depending on the region or the country where it’s being sold, and not to tighten the already harsh IP enforcemet already in place. To quote the report “little evidence—and indeed few claims—that enforcement efforts to date have had any effect whatsoever on the overall supply of pirated goods. Our work suggests, rather, that piracy has grown dramatically by most measures in the past decade.”

Internet Explorer 9 ready for download, is surprisingly fast

    0

Fast. That’s pretty much everyone’s consensus on Microsoft’s newest iteration of their web browser, Internet Explorer 9. The new browser is fast, clean and more importantly – more secure than ever before. Don’t believe us? You can try it out here for yourself.

While you’re waiting for the download, let us give you the summary of what makes the IE 9 great, at least to the Redmond firm’s eyes. The design is much, much cleaner than their previous effort, with most of the clutter gone. All you get with the standard build is the address bar (which doubles as a search bar using the search engine of your choice), back and forward keys and the current tabs you have open. You can add plug-ins to the experience if you wish. Prompts for remembering passwords appear in an unobtrusive bar located on the bottom.

You can now pin your favorite sites directly to your taskbar, just like an application. Once there, it gets its own large icon so it looks like any other program you have on the taskbar. Another great thing about pinned sites is that you can right click on them and a jump list appears, allowing you to jump straight to a page if the website was made with IE 9 in mind.

Another nice touch is the search bar/address bar. Not only does it pull double duty, but it also is able to display instant results to items that you type on it. Pretty cool. One particularly excellent new feature of IE 9, one that users won’t see right away is its ability to utilize a PC’s GPU to render pages and content. Traditionally, a PC’s GPU isn’t used by the computer to render pages on the web, and it sits idle whenever you go online. This isn’t the case with IE 9, and it shows.

Again, you can download IE 9 from here if you want to try it out.

Twestival Manila 2011: the biggest Twitter meet-up for social good

    0

Twestival is a movement that uses social media for social good by connecting communities offline on a single day to highlight a great cause. Ideas start as a tweet and as it spreads, becomes a movement that has the power to make things happen.

This year, Twestival is going ‘local’ in cities around the world on Thursday, 24 March 2011. All local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go directly to local non-profits that organizers have identified for having an incredible impact within their own community. The goal is to raise funds and awareness by doing a local meet-up with various activities.

Twestival Manila, our very own Twestival in the Philippines, will be supporting JeepneED. Their mission is to provide community-driven, financially sustainable in-school support in science and technology on a redesigned jeepney that runs on used vegetable oil. Their goal is to graduate both academics and farmers by reconnecting the disparity between everyday science and the science of inventors. JeepneED serves as an engaging outdoor learning lab with 10 netbooks, a 3G hub for Internet connectivity, a printer and scanner, a projector, and other basic science materials for a community of 8 to 12 rural public schools. Its unique and creative approach to enriching the quality of education for Filipino children is a cause worth supporting.

Twestival is the brainchild of Amanda Rose, who believes that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but work from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact. Since 2009, over 200 international cities all over the world have joined the movement.

Be a part of the Global Movement!

    1)  Grab a Ticket. Find your city on the official events list and attend your local event on March 24th.

    2)  Volunteer. Local events are run 100% by volunteers and teams are always looking for more help.

    3)  Donate. Each Twestival is supporting a amazing local cause with 100% of donations going direct to projects happening in their own community. Give what you can and help them reach their goal.

    4)  Sponsor or contribute in-kind. Are you a company or organization looking to connect with the digital set? Twestival Local has great sponsorship opportunities and cities are always happy to receive great prizes.

    5)  Tweet, Blog, Promote. Please spread the word about Twestival and our local charities.

To learn more, you can check out Twestival’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

Want to promote your local Twestival? Feel free to do so in the comments section below.

    SLENDERTONE: For those beach-ready abs

    0

With visible results in as little as eight weeks, Slendertone Flex fits conveniently into your busy schedule. A clinically proven, easy-to-use abs belt that uses Electronic Muscle Stimulation (EMS) technology, Slendertone Flex delivers a complete abdominal workout to firm up the core muscles and flatten the tummy area. In a matter of 20minutes, you get the equivalent of a 120-situp workout.  And with seven programs and 99 intensity levels to choose from, you can tailor your workout and train your muscles using a pace you are comfortable with.

The beauty about Slendertone is that it targets not only the muscles you see, but also the ones difficult to reach using conventional exercise, particularly the transversus abdominus (the deepest part of the abdominal muscles that’s essential to a stable lower back). This is because its patented EMS technology mimics the body’s natural muscle movements. Signals are sent between three medical grade GelPads, reaching nerves that branch out to all three main ab muscles—the rectus, oblique, and transversus abdominus—causing deep, strengthening contractions and effectively working the entire core. As the signal strength increases, the nerves in turn cause your muscles to contract and relax naturally, delivering a complete workout to the ab muscles. This same EMS technology is prescribed in hospitals and clinics worldwide to strengthen and rehabilitate muscles so you can be confident that it works.

Designed with the modern and busy city denizen in mind, Slendertone Flex may be worn under one’s clothing, helping consumers look and feel good while they lead their busy lives. Simply fasten the belt around your waist and let the toning begin. Wear the belt 30 minutes a day, five times a week, complement it with a proper diet, and expect toning and inch-loss in as little as eight weeks.

Designed by the Research & Development team of Biomedical Research Ltd (BMR), a company with over 40 years’ experience in EMS, Slendertone Flex is now present in the Philippine market through the distributorship of the Primer Group of Companies.

The Slendertone Flex is now available in Male and Female variants retailing a Php 7,990 in the following outlets of R.O.X. (Recreational Outdoor eXchange): Bonifacio High Street, Marquee Mall, Ayala Center Cebu; The Travel Club: TriNoma, Powerplant Mall, Resort World, Alabang Town Center.

Bye library, hello tech shop: the future of public libraries

School libraries were always my favorite place of seclusion and meditation when I was a still a student. I would devour books on Greek and Roman mythology, poems on love, and would constantly re-read and borrow (only to finally steal away from my highschool library a few years later, long after I had graduated as a final, though delayed act of defiance) The Riverside Anthology of Literature. And the closest thing you had to a search engine was the Dewey decimal system.

However, libraries in general are becoming a thing of the past. Books are replaced with e-books and the once paper-filled sanctuary is now becoming more and more like an internet-café for kids to go online away from their homes.

After providing stats about the state of libraries, Phillip Torrone offers suggestions about what libraries could become to stay relevant in the digital era. Instead of providing access to books, Torrone envisions a future where people will be able to go to engage in the making, creation or invention of things. He sees TechShops, Hackerspaces a FabLabs as contenders for what the library could be in the future. Rather than provide access to data everyone already has via the Internet, he believes these new spaces should give more hands-on opportunities to technology that is expensive and out of reach. These spaces would include devices such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CAD stations.

From library to factory, this is what Torrone believes we can do to cope and adjust to importance and prevalence of digital technology. Personally, I still would like pursue me and my husband’s dream of putting up our own public library (not techshop) filled with nothing but books. Real books. A library with no internet, no computers. Call it an ode to the old… but after watching The Book of Eli, I hardly think it’s such a bad idea.

Cetane boosters optimize performance of Petron Turbo Diesel

Petron, the country’s leading oil company, is making its mark as a fuel innovator with the introduction of specially formulated fuels, such as the new Petron Turbo Diesel.

A high-performance diesel designed to deliver that optimum driving experience, Petron Turbo Diesel contains a technologically-advanced cetane booster, resulting in a cetane number higher than other diesel fuels in the market.

According to Wikipedia, “Cetane number or CN is a measurement of the combustion quality of diesel fuel during compression ignition.  It is a significant expression of diesel fuel quality…”

A high cetane number indicates that the diesel fuel has a shorter ignition delay from the start of injection to start of combustion.  It causes lower rates of pressure rise and lower peak pressures, thus lessening combustion noise and vibration, and resulting in increased efficiency.  The cetane boosters in Petron Turbo Diesel ensure better ignition quality for quicker engine start-up, improved fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions.

Petron Turbo Diesel also contains a robust multifunctional detergent additive that delivers non-stop cleaning action.  This keeps the fuel system and the engine clean by preventing residue build-up and removing deposits and contaminants.

A premium organic combustion enhancer that promotes more efficient and complete combustion is part of the special formulation of Petron Turbo Diesel.  This unique fuel conditioner crates a catalytic reaction that enables more oxygen to combine with carbon molecules to produce a more complete fuel burn, thus generating more power and faster acceleration.

With its enhanced and advanced additive technology, Petron Turbo Diesel offers motorists a high-performance diesel fuel that delivers the following benefits:  Superior acceleration and performance, reduction of engine noise and ignition delay, cleaning of fuel injectors, protection against engine corrosion, improvement of cold start performance, and reduction of exhaust emissions.

Petron Turbo Diesel is the ideal fuel for high-end vehicles with common rail direct injection (CRDI) diesel engines, as its multi-additive formulation has been customized to deliver extraordinary diesel engine performance and a more enjoyable driving experience.  At the same time, older diesel engine types can benefit from its detergent and combustion-enhancing properties, for more optimized performance.

Following its highly-successful launch at a few service stations in mid-2010, Petron Turbo Diesel is now more widely available in select Petron service stations nationwide.

Petron Corporation is the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines. Its oil refinery produces a full range of petroleum products to supply nearly 40% of the country’s total fuel requirements. Through more than 1,500 service stations nationwide — the largest service station network in the country — Petron retails gasoline, diesel and kerosene to motorists.  Petron will continue to be at the forefront of product innovations aimed at giving the motoring public environment-friendly fuels that provide more value for money.
