Toyota Motor PH publishes latest sustainability report

The country’s automotive and mobility leader, Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP), recently released its Sustainability Report, covering its non-financial performance from January to December 2024 and its external impact on stakeholders. Now in its 11th year of issue, TMP marks a new decade of transparency with a reaffirmed commitment to advancing environmental, social, and economic progress.

As its central theme for the latest report, TMP highlights its ‘Beyond Zero’ corporate initiative, a Toyota global commitment to go beyond achieving carbon neutrality, first announced in the Philippines in October 2024.

Among the company’s most notable accomplishments in 2024 were the Scope 2 CO2 emissions avoidance through sourcing of 100% renewable energy for its Santa Rosa plant operations, as well as a 267% increase in direct new hires led by production expansion. Furthermore, TMP successfully completed its Comprehensive Automotive Resurgence Strategy (CARS) project with over 204,000 Vios units locally produced from July 2018 to July 2024, retaining and building on its local automotive production capabilities and parts supply chain.

On the economic front, TMP sustained its industry leadership in 2024, posting its highest-ever annual sales of 215,756 units and securing its 23rd Triple Crown for topping the passenger car, commercial vehicle, and overall sales segments. The company’s consolidated revenue reached PHP242 billion, reflecting an 8% year-on-year growth. TMP has notably beefed up its local manufacturing with a PHP5.5 billion new investment covering a vehicle conversion facility for the local production of its third model – the Next Generation Tamaraw – a boost to the local auto industry.

On the environmental side, TMP advanced its multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, combining vehicle electrification, renewable energy adoption, and intelligent mobility solutions. In 2024, the company recorded a 95% surge in electrified vehicle (xEV) sales with 17 xEV models in its Toyota and Lexus line-ups. Showcasing Toyota’s powertrain innovation and highlighting hydrogen (H2) as a future-ready zero-emission solution, TMP demonstrated the Corolla Cross H2 Concept vehicle and H2 refueling infrastructure to various stakeholders, including the Philippine government.

“All these go to show that hydrogen has potential. Our goal is to reduce CO2 emissions through various solutions beyond just electrification. Toyota hopes to bring more possibilities for the Philippines, too,” said TMP president Masando Hashimoto.

Hashimoto noted that Toyota’s ‘Beyond Zero’ philosophy would like to address other societal issues, including safety, mobility, and connectivity. “Achieving zero is no longer enough. We are creating new value—building a future where each move we make is driven by the vision of leaving the world in a better state.”

In the social aspect, TMP commits to people and community development by supporting employment in its network of over 60,000 individuals nationwide and by providing above-minimum wage for all its direct employees. Its workplace safety also remained exemplary with zero fatalities and eight (8) million safe man-hours, complemented by physical and mental health initiatives to support employee well-being based on the company’s people-first culture.

While local regulation on Sustainability Reporting is confined to Publicly-Listed Companies (PLCs) by the Securities and Exchange Commission, TMP’s decade of voluntary non-financial reporting underscores its commitment to transparency and accountability. As an industry leader, it also acknowledges the role of firms to advancing corporate sustainability in the Philippines while navigating contemporary risks and opportunities.

TMP’s latest Sustainability Report adheres to international standards and frameworks such as of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), and is now accessible via https://www.toyota.com.ph/sustainability.

TMP is a Non-listed Large Corporation (NLC) engaged in automotive manufacturing, importation and distribution of Toyota and Lexus brand products. Its major shareholder, GT Capital Holdings, Inc., is a large Philippine conglomerate listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange since 2012.

Garmin introduces Index Sleep Monitor smart sleep band

Garmin has announced the Index Sleep Monitor, an ultra-comfortable and lightweight smart sleep band that tracks sleep to provide a more comprehensive view of overall fitness and recovery. Featuring up to 7 nights of battery life with continuous Pulse Ox tracking, the Index Sleep Monitor is worn on the upper arm and tracks sleep stages, heart rate variability (HRV) status, breathing variations, skin temperature and more to calculate a sleep score for users and provide valuable insights about their health. After a night of sleep, the data seamlessly syncs to the Garmin Connect™ smartphone app and can be combined with metrics from a compatible Garmin smartwatch to fill in gaps in data for users who don’t wear their watch at night or are looking to better understand how well they recovered.

“We are thrilled to add the Index Sleep Monitor to our suite of innovative health and wellness products. Wearing this smart sleep band every night can provide in-depth sleep insights and a more complete picture of fitness and recovery, so users can wake up ready to seize the day,” says Susan Lyman, Garmin vice president of consumer sales and marketing

    Rest and recover

Throughout the night, the Index Sleep Monitor tracks the following sleep and recovery metrics, which can then be viewed on the Garmin Connect app:

    • Sleep score: Every morning, receive a personalized score (0-100) for last night’s sleep based on sleep duration, stress, sleep stages, and more.
    • Sleep stages: View light, deep, and REM sleep stages and when they occur during the night.
    • HRV status: See the previous night’s average HRV and status (balanced, unbalanced, low or poor). After several nights of wear, the smart sleep band will establish a personal baseline to help provide a better understanding of recovery and overall wellness.
    • Pulse Ox: Track blood oxygen saturation during sleep.
    • Breathing variations: Used in conjunction with Pulse Ox, view and better understand shifts in breathing patterns while sleeping.
    • Respiration: View respiration rates throughout the night.
    • Skin temperature: Track skin temperature changes, which can be related to recent activity, sleep environment, potential illness, and more.
    • Women’s health tracking: Using skin temperature, women can get more insights into their menstrual cycle, including improved period predictions and past ovulation estimates. Women can also track their menstrual cycle or pregnancy and get exercise and nutrition education in the Garmin Connect app.
    • Body BatteryTM energy monitoring: View energy levels to see if the body is charged or needs more rest. Users who wear a compatible smartwatch while awake can get a more complete picture of their energy levels—day and night.
    • Stress tracking: See if last night’s sleep was calm, balanced, or stressful.

When it’s time to wake up, the smart wake alarm feature looks at lighter sleep stages during a pre-selected window of time to gently wake users with a light vibration so they feel more refreshed.

Available in two sizes (S-M and L-XL), the Index Sleep Monitor is easy to clean; just remove the module and toss the band into the washing machine on the gentle cycle. It is for PHP10,290 and available via official Garmin Stores online in Kinetic, Shopee, and Lazada and in all Garmin Brand Stores and Garmin Specialty Stores. For more information, visit https://ph.garmin.com/

Engineered on the inside for life on the outside, Garmin products have revolutionized the health and wellness industry. Committed to developing smartwatches and health measurement tools that help people of all activity levels lead healthier lives, Garmin believes every day is an opportunity to innovate and a chance to beat yesterday.

Credit scores as catalysts for financial inclusion

In the Philippines’ journey toward becoming an upper-middle-income economy, access to formal credit remains both a challenge and an opportunity. Credit scores, often overlooked in the public discourse, are in fact one of the most powerful levers in enabling wider participation in the financial system.

The 2024 Credit Perception Index (CPI) by TransUnion underscores the urgency: only 54% of the unbanked population are familiar with formal credit products, a significant drop from last year and far below the 70% recorded among the general population. This deterioration in credit literacy comes at a time when the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has already surpassed its target of digitalizing 50 percent of retail payments, achieving 52.8%  in 2023.

Digital adoption is accelerating, but credit inclusion is lagging. Without a functioning credit profile, millions remain excluded from the most transformative financial products such as business loans, mortgages, and affordable credit lines that can drive long term economic mobility.

The Role of Credit Scores in the Formal Economy

A credit score is more than a personal financial tool; it is a market signal. For lenders, it quantifies risk; for the economy, it channels capital where it is most productive. Strong credit profiles often unlock competitive interest rates, higher borrowing limits, and faster approvals, while weak or non-existent scores limit credit flow, particularly for underserved sectors. In the Philippines, this gap is significant: banks allocated only 4.52% of total lending to MSMEs in 2024, far below the mandated 10%. Without robust credit data, promising borrowers, especially small businesses, struggle to secure financing.

Improving credit literacy and participation has macroeconomic benefits. Economies with deeper credit penetration see amplified consumer spending, SME growth, and housing activity, all feeding into gross domestic product expansion. In the country, initiatives such as the BSP–JICA Credit Risk Database aim to shift lending from collateral-based to risk-based models, enabling more inclusive financing. Credit card adoption is also rising, with originations nearing 1 million per quarter in 2023 and penetration surpassing 15% of adults, signaling growing engagement with formal credit systems.

How Credit Visibility and Technology Drive Inclusion

Credit visibility is more than a financial milestone for individuals and even for small businesses,  it is a catalyst for economic growth. A robust credit score not only helps borrowers secure better loan terms but also signals to lenders that capital can be allocated efficiently. In fact, micro-lending platforms like JuanHand help bridge the gap by extending small, manageable loans to those without a formal credit history. As a submitting entity to the Credit Information Corporation (CIC), JuanHand ensures repayment behavior is recorded in the national registry, enabling responsible borrowing today to build stronger credit standing, and with it, access to larger loans, lower interest rates, and greater financial opportunities.

As the Philippine arm of NYSE-listed FinVolution Group, JuanHand benefits from the parent company’s extensive regional experience and technological backbone. This includes FinVolution’s proprietary AI and machine learning platform, which JuanHand also applies in the local market. The platform processes massive volumes of data to deliver faster, more precise credit assessments. And to maximize effectiveness, these universal technologies are adapted to local needs, taking into account borrower behavior, risk patterns, and regulatory requirements. This allows JuanHand to responsibly extend credit to first-time borrowers while maintaining low default rates.

At JuanHand, AI powers real-time risk assessment using just basic customer details, such as name, citizenship, contact information, and one valid ID, enabling loan approvals in as little as five minutes. For repeat borrowers, the process is even faster: loans can be approved and disbursed to their e-wallets in under 45 seconds. This seamless experience not only improves accessibility but also reinforces JuanHand’s commitment to responsible, technology-driven financial inclusion.

As the president and CEO of WeFund Lending Corp. (operator of JuanHand), Francisco “Coco” Mauricio explains, “Credit inclusion is about empowering individuals and small businesses to participate in the formal economy. By helping people build their credit histories, we are laying the foundation for long-term economic growth and financial resilience.”

Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), one of the country’s most prestigious higher education institutions, has partnered with PLDT Enterprise to lay the foundation for its smart campus transformation — a future-ready learning environment powered by high-speed internet, cloud-based communications, and advanced digital infrastructure.

Through PLDT Enterprise’s suite of solutions — including iGate (a dedicated internet access), SIP with Cloud PABX, and enterprise-grade mobile postpaid plans — the Ateneo is upgrading its campus-wide digital capabilities to support more seamless teaching, learning, and administrative operations.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to shaping the future of education through technology,” said Mitch Locsin, first vice president and head of enterprise core business, PLDT and Smart. “We are proud to support Ateneo de Manila University in its vision of becoming a smart campus and empowering the next generation of Filipino leaders.”

Maya wins 7 Quill Awards for PR and marketing excellence

Maya, the Philippines’ leading fintech ecosystem and digital bank, won seven trophies at the 21st Philippine Quill Awards, which recognized its standout PR and marketing campaigns that made banking relevant, aspirational and part of the daily lives of young Filipinos.

The Quill Awards, organized by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), is one of the most prestigious events in the PR industry. Entries are rigorously screened by seasoned PR practitioners in the Philippines.

“At Maya, marketing isn’t an afterthought—it’s how we build trust and relevance from day one. These awards prove that when bold storytelling is anchored on real products, you can change how Filipinos see and use money. The Quill win pushes us to keep raising the bar for what PR and marketing can do in shaping a digital bank that feels like part of everyday culture,” said Pepe Torres, Maya Group chief marketing officer.

Maya’s seven Quill wins spanned four flagship campaigns—Get Banked with Maya, Maya Credit, Seasonal Campaigns and Maya Card for Travel—recognized under marketing and brand communications. Additional awards for Maya’s TikTok account, and the short film and launch event of the Get Banked with Maya campaign, underscored Maya’s strength across audio-visual, social media, and experiential categories. At the core of these wins are campaigns that reshaped how Filipinos engage with finance:

    • Get Banked with Maya showed that opening a bank account can be effortless and rewarding, encouraging Gen Z and Millennials to take their first step into formal finance.
    • Maya Credit reframed borrowing as responsible and confidence-building, positioning its credit line as a lifeline for everyday needs without the stigma of debt.
    • Seasonal Campaigns turned cultural moments—like tuition deadlines, summer spending and back-to-school shopping—into smarter financial choices through cashback and savings nudges.
    • Maya Card for Travel tapped post-pandemic wanderlust, showing how rewards and perks can stretch travel budgets further.

The campaigns were amplified through Maya’s TikTok-first strategy, which turned financial tips into entertaining, bite-sized content Gen Z actually wanted to engage with.

This recognition builds on Maya’s momentum as a rising fintech brand. Customer accounts more than doubled to 8.2 million in the past year, deposits reached PHP50.4 billion by June 2025, and loan disbursements grew 147% year-on-year in Q2, bringing cumulative lending to PHP152 billion.

This latest haul at the Philippine Quill Awards adds to Maya’s list of prestigious industry recognitions in the field of marketing and public relations. Earlier this year, Maya earned top honors at the 2025 PR Awards Asia-Pacific, taking home Gold for PR Event and Silver for Best Brand Strategy, alongside four trophies at the 60th Anvil Awards. Together, these wins underscore Maya’s leadership in redefining how finance connects with culture and everyday life.

SEAOIL Radical Challenge PH 2025 season opens

The 2025 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines finally got underway at Clark International Speedway (CIS) with the biggest grid in the series’ history. A total of nine drivers across the SR1 and SR3 Challenge Cup lined up to kick off the fourth season of the country’s fastest racing series, with the weekend delivering nonstop action from the very first lap.

Conditions were unpredictable throughout the weekend, with changing weather making setup a constant challenge. Fueled by race-engineered SEAOIL Extreme-97 fuel, Portuguese driver Andre Rodrigues set the early pace in Saturday Qualifying, clocking a 1:56.619 lap in the #30 green-and-black livered SR3 to secure pole position. However, it was newcomer Juha Turalba who stole the spotlight. Driving the baby-blue SR1 for T2 Racing, the young debutant delivered a stunning lap just 0.373 secs off pole—splitting the SR3 runners and earning a front-row start.

Race 1 got underway Saturday afternoon under dark skies. Rodrigues and Turalba held position into Turn 1, but Jason Choachuy in the RDY x Autoholic Garage SR1 jumped from P7 to P3 in a bold opening move.

By the end of Lap 1, Turalba had surged into the overall lead, followed by Mikey Jordan, while Rodrigues and Choachuy both spun at Turn 1 with the latter forced to retire. The Portuguese driver clawed back to take P2 in SR3, passing Rafa Caceres of C&C Motorsport late in the race. Meanwhile, an intense SR1 battle between Jamal Almario and Miguel Quiñones ended in contact, though both were able to continue.

After 12 laps, Jordan claimed his first win of the season in the SR3 Challenge Cup, ahead of Caceres and Rodrigues. In the SR1 Challenge Cup, Turalba scored a commanding class win on debut, followed by Quiñones and Almario.

Sunday morning brought blazing sun and even hotter battles. Rodrigues again took the early lead, trailed by Choachuy, Jordan, and Quiñones. Mechanical issues saw Turalba drop down the order early on, though he would later mount a strong recovery drive.

After getting past Rodrigues, Jordan and Choachuy went wheel-to-wheel for the lead, banging wheels through the corkscrew. The scrap ended with Jordan getting spun around, allowing Choachuy to take over at the front with Quiñones and a resurgent Turalba in close pursuit. Despite the incident, Jordan clawed his way back through the field and overtook Caceres on the final lap to secure his second SR3 Challenge Cup victory of the weekend.

Choachuy crossed the line in P1 but was demoted to 2nd after receiving a post-race penalty for avoidable contact—handing the SR1 Challenge Cup win to Turalba, with Quiñones completing the podium in 3rd.

Just as drivers thought they’d seen it all, heavy rain drenched Race 3, adding yet another twist to an already unpredictable weekend.

With Turalba on pole and Jordan alongside, the field cautiously launched into the final race of the weekend. Jordan got the better start and took the early lead, with Turalba close behind. The front two quickly pulled away from the pack, but with nine laps to go, Turalba found his rhythm in the wet, passed Jordan, and never looked back. The T2 Racing driver secured a lights-to-flag win—his third straight SR1 Challenge Cup victory of the weekend. Choachuy finished 2nd, with Almario claiming 3rd in class.

Jordan, unable to match the pace in the slippery conditions, eventually fell back—allowing Caceres to snatch his first SR3 Challenge Cup win of the season. Jordan settled for 2nd, while Rodrigues completed the podium.

“We’re thrilled to have kicked off the fourth season of the SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines with our biggest grid yet. The level of competition was at its peak, and the energy from both teams and race fans could be felt all throughout the weekend,” commented Edward Cruz, SEAOIL Philippines Inc. Head of Fuels Marketing.

“For us at SEAOIL, this series is the ultimate stage to showcase what our fuels can do. Every Radical on the track runs on SEAOIL Extreme Fuels — the very same fuel trusted by race teams that’s also available to Filipino motorists at more than 800 SEAOIL stations nationwide. It’s proof that the same high performance you see on the track translates to reliability on the road. That’s Alagang SEAOIL for you!”

After a commanding weekend with two wins and a podium, Mikey Jordan now leads the SR3 Challenge Cup standings, with Rodrigues and Caceres close behind. In SR1, it’s a dream start for Juha Turalba, who swept all three races on debut and takes a dominant lead in the points. Choachuy and Matthew Edmunds round out the early top three.

With Official Operations Partner Petromax, the championship resumes on September 26–28 as the series heads south to the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC) for Round 2.

The 2025 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines is sponsored by SEAOIL Philippines, Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands, Petromax, Dove Men, Axe, The AutoComplex, Second Skin Industries, Tieline, and John Barbers.

Pag-IBIG Fund urges acquired asset occupants to legitimize tenure with 10% discount

Pag-IBIG Fund is urging occupants of its acquired properties to legitimize their tenure by purchasing the homes they currently occupy, now made more affordable through a 10 percent discount under its ongoing Acquired Assets Super Sale. Buyers may choose among three available payment options, namely cash, short-term installment, or a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan. The offer runs from August 25 to December 14, 2025.

The offer applies to occupied properties currently in Pag-IBIG Fund’s acquired asset inventory, and forms part of the agency’s efforts to promote homeownership under the Marcos Administration’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino, or Expanded 4PH Program.

“We are taking all available steps and launching the necessary initiatives to help Filipino workers gain homeownership, consistent with the vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in providing access to dignified and secure housing for all,” said Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling, chairperson of the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees and head of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development.

“We recognize that our members face different circumstances that call for tailored solutions. That is why we are addressing their varied needs through this campaign by giving current occupants of our foreclosed properties the opportunity to become legitimate homeowners.”

Under the program, eligible occupants who receive an Invitation to Purchase or Lease (ITPL) from Pag-IBIG Fund may buy the homes they currently occupy. Those who are issued an ITPL during the promotional period shall enjoy a 10 percent discount. They may choose to purchase the property through cash, short-term installment of up to 12 months, or a Pag-IBIG Housing Loan. For members opting to avail of the housing loan, those with limited income may apply with co-borrowers to help meet the required income. Meanwhile, original borrowers whose accounts were previously cancelled or foreclosed may also seek approval from the agency to qualify for another loan under the program.

“This is the best time for occupants of our acquired properties to take the step toward legal homeownership,” said Pag-IBIG Fund chief executive officer Marilene C. Acosta. “With the 10 percent discount under our Super Sale, they can purchase the homes they already live in at a more affordable price. This allows them to finally secure legal ownership of the property and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with it.”

Acosta emphasized that proceeds from these sales are plowed back into Pag-IBIG Fund’s programs, staying true to the agency’s founding principle of mutual benefit among members.

“Every peso we recover from these units helps us serve more members,” she said. “The amounts originally loaned out to acquire these homes came from the collective savings of our members. So when current occupants purchase these properties, the funds return to Pag-IBIG Fund and allow us to help even more Filipino workers who also dream of having a home of their own. This is part of how we continue to fulfill our mandate of making homeownership affordable for every Filipino worker.”

The Pag-IBIG Fund Acquired Assets Super Sale, launched in August, features more than 30,000 foreclosed properties with special discounts under various modes of purchase. For unoccupied properties, buyers may avail of up to 35 percent discount for cash purchases, up to 25 percent for installment terms, and up to 15 percent for housing loan take outs. For properties that are occupied, discounts are up to 40 percent for cash payments, up to 30 percent for installment, and up to 20 percent for housing loan take outs. Meanwhile, current occupants of foreclosed properties may purchase the homes they are living in through direct sale and enjoy a 10 percent discount.
Interested buyers may access the full list of properties and view the step-by-step process for submitting offers through Pag-IBIG Fund’s online platform at www.pagibigfundservices.com/OnlinePublicAuction
