Cultivating change: How home-grown Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot is gaining international success

In the rolling farmlands of Pulong Yantok, Bulacan, a quiet revolution in farming is taking root, literally. What started as a small backyard hobby born from a family’s search for healing has blossomed into Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot, now the world’s largest source of hybrid dragon fruit varieties. With its remarkable collection of over 200 unique dragon fruit cultivars, this family-run enterprise is spearheading the movement toward sustainable, innovative farming in the Philippines.

Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot began as a personal journey. When one family member was diagnosed with cancer, the Eliscupides family turned to dragon fruit for its perceived potent health benefits. Understanding the plant’s rich nutrients and antioxidant properties, they became determined to grow it for themselves. What started as a backyard experiment quickly expanded and, by 2012, they had transformed their passion into a pioneering business venture. The family now stands as the proud curators of the largest collection of hybrid dragon fruits in the world, featuring varieties that boast unique flavors like coconut, lychee, and strawberry.

The Seeds of Innovation and Growth

Dragon fruit farming is not new in the Philippines, but Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot has taken the practice to new heights with innovative farming methods. Using a trellis-based growing system reminiscent of vineyards, they have maximized their farm’s potential. This system allows them to cultivate more dragon fruits in a fraction of the space typically required. As a result, their farm, which spans roughly three hectares, operates as though it were five times that size, proving that even small-scale farmers can achieve significant output through ingenuity.

“We’ve turned even the smallest backyards into productive dragon fruit farms,” says Kevin Eliscupides, co-owner of the depot. “The trellis method allows us and other farmers to maximize land use, saving both space and resources. It’s a game-changer for anyone interested in sustainable agriculture.”

While Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot’s success has flourished locally, their influence has gone global. In fact, they have shipped their planting materials to over 80 countries across the globe — from South Africa to Greece and the United States. The depot’s commitment to cultivating rare, high-quality varieties has placed the Philippines on the map as a leading dragon fruit producer. However, the journey to international markets was not without challenges.

“Exporting hybrid dragon fruits requires not only knowledge of cultivation but also logistical precision,” says Kevin. “That’s where FedEx came in. From the very start, they’ve made the process seamless. Their global network and reliable freight service enabled us to send our dragon fruit cuttings quickly and efficiently, even to distant locations.”

Through FedEx extensive network and tailored freight solutions for perishables, Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot can maintain the quality and freshness of their temperature-sensitive planting materials as they journey across borders. “FedEx has made things so much easier for us,” Kevin explains. “They pick up the materials from our farm, handle all the complex logistics needs such as delivery and customs clearance, and within a week, our products are in our customers’ hands safely and in mint condition.” The ease of working with FedEx gives Kevin peace of mind, enabling him to focus on other areas of the business while knowing that shipping is well taken care of.

Empowering the Next Generation of Farmers

At the heart of Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot’s mission is a desire to uplift others. Not content with keeping their success to themselves, the depot actively shares its knowledge with aspiring farmers. They provide free training and seminars, teaching innovative farming techniques and promoting the benefits of hybrid dragon fruits. By partnering with institutions like the Central Luzon State University (CLSU) and the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), the depot ensures that the next generation of Filipino farmers is equipped to succeed.

“We don’t see ourselves as competitors but rather as allies,” says Kevin. “Our goal is to help other farmers thrive and succeed so that hybrid dragon fruits can reach more people. We’re committed to making a positive change to the community, and through that, we’re raising the standard for agriculture across the country.”

With the soaring demand for hybrid dragon fruits, Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot is constantly ahead of their game. In addition to their training programs, they are now expanding the capacity of their farm to increase supply of their dragon fruits to both local and international markets. They hope to one day meet the high demand for dragon fruits in markets that are currently untapped, as well as further boost the Philippines’ reputation as a leader in sustainable agriculture.

For Bulacan Dragon Fruit Depot, the key to success lies in a combination of innovation, community, and reliability. With FedEx by their side, they’re not just growing fruit—they’re cultivating a future where the Philippines is recognized as a global agricultural powerhouse.

PetPal empowers Filipino vets with EMR Portal

PetPal, the Philippines’ first all-in-one digital petcare platform from 917Ventures, is transforming the country’s veterinary landscape with its Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Portal.

This latest innovation marks PetPal’s move to expand its services and cater not just to pet owners but also to Filipino veterinarians.

The EMR Portal aims to streamline patient management by linking pet owners’ information submitted through the PetPal app with veterinarians’ patient records. This provides quick access to comprehensive profiles for faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatments.

    PetPal

Martin Luchangco, general manager of PetPal highlighted that the integration of a digitized system can enhance overall clinic efficiency; guiding veterinarians through the entire process—from initial consultations and scheduling procedures to managing prescriptions.

“We see the Vet EMR Portal as a game-changer for Filipino veterinarians,” Luchangco said. He mentions how the platform’s real-time sync with the information submitted through the PetPal app is what sets it apart from other EMR service providers, making it easier for both vets and pet owners to keep track of their pets’ medical records.

He added, “Our goal is to help vets do what they do best—caring for animals. Through the EMR Portal, we are streamlining administrative tasks and enhancing the overall veterinary experience.”

In the Philippines, where 79% of households own pets, the veterinary sector faces considerable challenges. With only around 10,000 active veterinarians and fewer than 500 clinics nationwide, the ratio of pets to veterinarians is a staggering 2,000 to 1.

This shortage highlights a substantial gap in the availability and accessibility of veterinary services, which PetPal seeks to bridge by empowering veterinarians using the EMR portal.

For a limited time, vets are offered FREE access to PetPal’s EMR services. Those interested in exploring the benefits of the EMR Portal may visit https://org-portal.petpal.asia/login  for more details.

USAID SPEED project partners with PLDT Enterprise to champion MSME digitalization

PLDT Enterprise and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have reinforced their shared commitment to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the Philippines through a strategic partnership under USAID’s Strengthening Private Enterprises for the Digital Economy (SPEED) project.

    Bringing SPEED to Local Businesses

The SPEED project expands the participation of Philippine SMEs in the country’s emerging e-commerce ecosystem by improving their capacity to adopt digital technologies; supporting the integration of SMEs and e-commerce platforms in logistical supply chains; increasing the use of e-payment systems and other fintech innovations; and strengthening consumer awareness and protection.

Through the SPEED project, USAID supports the U.S. government’s goal to help the Philippines develop a robust, secure, and resilient digital economy as a key to drive post-pandemic recovery and long-term economic growth for the country.

This partnership goes beyond providing digital tools and connectivity; it seeks to drive long-term, sustainable growth for MSMEs, ensuring that even the smallest businesses can thrive in the evolving digital economy.

PLDT Enterprise Reaching Out to MSMEs

As a key player in the nationwide digitalization effort, PLDT Enterprise continues to support MSMEs by providing them with access to technology and digital platforms. This partnership amplifies USAID and PLDT’s commitment to supporting MSMEs by bringing digital expertise to the sector and providing technology to help businesses adapt to the growing digital economy.

Joint initiatives like the MSME Day roadshows, held in Iloilo, Dipolog, and Pampanga, offer MSMEs the opportunity to explore the latest digital solutions, and the GoDigital Pilipinas, which promote cashless transactions for Filipino entrepreneurs, are just a few examples of how the partnership will digitally empower MSMEs, enabling them to thrive in the fast-evolving technology-driven economy.

In a statement, Amy Lovejoy, USAID Philippines’ Director of Economic Development and Governance, emphasized that digital platforms and technologies open an opportunity for MSMEs to experience growth and scalability to enhance their operational efficiency. “USAID’s support signals the U.S. government’s strong commitment to advancing the development of a stronger, more resilient digital economy in the Philippines.”

“Through our partnership with USAID and the SPEED project, we are reaffirming our commitment to help MSMEs succeed in the digital economy. We understand the unique challenges these businesses face, and we are here to provide the digital solutions and support they need to grow and succeed,” said Jay Lagdameo, vice president and head of Enterprise Revenue Group at PLDT Enterprise.

Collaboration Strengthening MSME Resilience Through Digital Solutions

The USAID SPEED project is designed to accelerate the digitalization of Filipino SMEs, enabling them to harness the power of e-commerce and compete in both local and global markets. This initiative perfectly aligns with PLDT Enterprise’s mission of fostering MSME growth by offering reliable and scalable digital solutions tailored to their needs.

“We recognize that MSMEs are the backbone of the Philippine economy, and by empowering them with the right digital tools, we can significantly enhance their growth potential,” added Lovejoy. “Our collaboration with PLDT Enterprise allows us to extend our reach and impact, ensuring that more Filipino businesses can access the resources and technology they need to succeed in a digital-first world.”

A Shared Vision to Drive Growth in the MSME Sector

This partnership builds on several MSME-focused initiatives that PLDT Enterprise, along with PLDT and Smart, has participated in this year. These include collaborations with the Department of Trade and Industry, Maya Philippines, and the PLDT-Smart Foundation. These efforts aim to empower Filipino entrepreneurs by equipping them with digital tools, knowledge, and solutions to further grow their businesses.

While the PLDT group has long been committed to supporting MSMEs, this collaboration of PLDT Enterprise and USAID further strengthens its mission to ensure that even the smallest businesses have the digital capabilities needed to compete and succeed in today’s marketplace. It underscores both organizations’ long-standing commitment to fostering resilience, sustainability, and growth for small businesses across the country.

By leveraging their collective expertise and resources, PLDT Enterprise and USAID are ensuring that Filipino MSMEs have access to reliable and transformative digital solutions, enabling them to remain competitive and resilient in the ever-evolving digital landscape.
