VITRO marks its Silver Year as the Philippines’ data center pioneer

VITRO Inc., the country’s largest data center operator and a subsidiary of ePLDT, is celebrating its silver anniversary this August,  marking a quarter-century of enabling digital transformation for hundreds of enterprises and institutions across the Philippines.

Established in 2000 with the launch of the Philippines’ first-ever commercial data center in Pasig, VITRO has grown into the country’s largest data center network, with over 13,400 racks nationwide. From a single 4MW site, it now powers the mission-critical operations of over 400 local and global companies across key industries and sectors—a testament to the visionary leadership of PLDT Group Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan to build digital infrastructures that benefit the digital lives of Filipinos.

“For 25 years, VITRO has been more than a network of data centers — it’s been building our country’s digital foundation,” said Victor S. Genuino, President and CEO of ePLDT and VITRO Inc. “We’ve built the infrastructure, the capabilities, and the trust that Filipino businesses have relied on — and will continue to rely on — in a digital-first future.”

    Built to Lead

From the beginning, VITRO was built to set the benchmark for the industry. As the Philippines’ first provider of enterprise-grade data centers, it has continuously evolved to support the country’s growing digital landscape, expanding its capabilities to serve newest technologies — from cloud to artificial intelligence— all in alignment with global standards.

A major milestone in its recent journey was the launch of VITRO Santa Rosa, the Philippines’ first AI-ready hyperscale data center. Designed to support high-density and high-performance computing, the facility plays a crucial role in enabling enterprises, hyperscalers, the public sector and artificial intelligence workloads.

The company is already preparing for its next leap forward, with another data center in the pipeline, set to break ground in 2026. This expansion is part of VITRO’s broader strategy to cement the Philippines’ position as a digital hub in Asia and beyond.

Investing in Talent Through VITRO Academy

Beyond infrastructure, VITRO has also invested heavily in people. Through its flagship program, the VITRO Academy, the company is helping develop the next generation of Filipino data center professionals.

Launched as a three-tier micro-credential program, VITRO Academy is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and the evolving demands of the Philippines’ fast-growing data center industry.

In partnership with five esteemed institutions—National University, Asia Pacific College, Ateneo de Naga University, Far Eastern University-Roosevelt, and Wesleyan University—VITRO has trained over 400 students to date. Of these, 263 have earned Level One certification, 60 have progressed to Level Two, and 40 have achieved Level Three, equipping them to operate in live data center environments upon graduation.

“You can’t build a digital-powered economy without developing talent,” said Genuino. “VITRO Academy ensures that we’re not just building platforms — we’re empowering young Filipinos to become future tech leaders.”

Looking Ahead: The Next 25 Years

As it celebrates this milestone year, VITRO is setting its sights firmly on the future. The company aims to further deepen collaboration with industry and government partners to co-create innovations that will accelerate the country’s digital competitiveness.

VITRO’s forward-looking agenda includes accelerating cloud and AI adoption, enhancing digital ecosystems that promote sectoral collaboration and innovation, and building future-ready data centers to transform the Philippines’ digital landscape.

“Our silver anniversary is more than a celebration of longevity,” said Genuino. “It’s a reaffirmation of our mission. From the banks that manage your finances, to the government agencies delivering public services, to the online platforms driving commerce — we exist to support them all.”

“Twenty-five years in, our mission remains the same,” Genuino added. “To build, empower, and enable a Digital Philippines — one that is inclusive, competitive, and confidently prepared for the future.”

How foodpanda is helping “mom and pop” restaurants level up through online delivery

“Someday, I will open my own restaurant.” For some Filipinos, this kind of thought is merely the stuff of daydreams; for others, it’s the starting point for turning dreams into reality. Indeed, many enterprising foodies have turned their culinary passion into a business venture and are now part of the ever-growing community of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) that make up 99% of all local businesses in the Philippines.

As many MSME owners—food-related or not—will attest, the road to success is far from easy, filled with challenges, surprises, and even heartbreaks. For local entrepreneurs carving out their place, the odds can be daunting—more so when the competition includes bigger, established names.

With the pandemic serving as a catalyst for rapid digitalization, MSMEs found new ways to reach new and bigger audiences. For restaurants, the newfound gateway to business success was online delivery. “The rapid rise of food delivery and e-commerce apps during the pandemic was no coincidence,” remarked Lhecks De Castro, finance director of foodpanda Philippines. “As everyone had to stay indoors by default, these online delivery platforms became a lifeline for consumers to get food and other essentials; and a lifeline for restaurants to sustain their businesses even with zero foot traffic.”

“More than half a decade later, we have seen many of these independent businesses flourish, and even with malling and dine-in returning once again to Filipino culture, we see that online delivery has now become an integral part of the lives of consumers and restaurants alike,” De Castro added.

With thousands of vendors across the country– many of which are MSMEs– currently in the foodpanda platform, they are able to reach new digital customers, generate additional revenue streams, and adapt to changing consumer habits. For many independent businesses, joining foodpanda marked their first step into e-commerce, helping them establish a strong digital presence that could compete even against larger chains.

    Hummus Elijah

One of these vendors is Hummus Elijah, which set up shop in Makati in 2015. A local favorite in the Poblacion area, they joined foodpanda in the same year. “Working with foodpanda has been a huge boost,” said Eli Lapid, founder and owner of Hummus Elijah. “Although we have our regular dine-in patrons, online delivery allows us to reach customers who prefer to eat in their homes or condos, especially during rainy days, as well as office workers in the business district who want to order from us during lunch break. It also helps us to get discovered by non-Makati residents, such as those on staycations or expats on business trips.”

Eli also shared that because of foodpanda, they’ve been able to cater to customers across Metro Manila—something that would have been difficult to achieve through eat-in service alone.

That kind of expanded reach and growth potential is a game-changer for the likes of Hummus Elijah, as well as fellow foodpanda vendors such as Spotted Pig and Nolita Joes, which are also beloved food spots in Makati.

    Spotted Pig

For Spotted Pig, joining foodpanda meant bringing their Siargao-born menu to a new audience in the city. “When we were starting in Manila, foodpanda really helped us be known in the market,” said Isabella Alvarez, owner of Spotted Pig.

The platform also gave them the opportunity to introduce their island flavors to new customers and build a following even before many had the chance to visit in person.

This kind of visibility is what De Castro points to as a major advantage for MSMEs. With foodpanda, independent restaurants have the opportunity to access powerful tools such as targeted ads and promotional campaigns, just like bigger brands. These services help small businesses increase their visibility and attract more customers.”

While MSMEs such as Hummus Elijah have successfully crossed over from a niche market to a much bigger one, thanks to foodpanda, many others are still hesitant. Some lack the extra funds needed for expansion or new investments, keeping them from taking the plunge.

    Access to Capital

Recognizing that access to capital is a major barrier for small businesses, foodpanda has introduced innovative financing programs like foodpanda Capital. This performance-based program offers simplified requirements, no collateral, and transparent terms—providing much-needed financial support for MSMEs.

“We know fully well how difficult it is to start and sustain a business, especially when it comes to securing the capital that they need to grow,” said De Castro. “We designed these financing programs precisely with the mom and pop stores in mind– to help them turn into the next big restaurant that many Filipinos can enjoy.”

    foodpanda

“Ultimately, foodpanda’s vision is to help the MSME sector achieve sustained growth and resilience. We want to empower small businesses to scale operations, create more jobs, and contribute to the economy,” De Castro concluded. “By doing so, it’s a win-win for everyone– for the customers, partner vendors and freelance delivery riders, as well as the communities where we operate.”

Heart spills the tea  on what’s next for her at GCash Spotlight

Heart Evangelista-Escudero and GCash are taking over our feeds once again, this time at the official launch event for GCash’s newest payment innovation, Tap to Pay, where next-level payments meet next-level looks.

Hot on the heels of the latest GCash film starring Heart and showcasing the NEW GCash Tap to Pay feature, GCash launches its second installation to their GCash Spotlight YouTube Series, inviting everyone to an afternoon event filled with fame, fashion, and celebrity gossip.

    Heart’s Soft Power Era

Heart talking about how she is in her soft power era, knowing when to say “No.”

Hosted by the King of Talk, Boy Abunda, the program opened hard-hitting questions that revealed Heart’s more vulnerable side. Having just turned forty, this year’s GCash Spotlight event zeroed in on what has changed for her and what’s coming up next for Heart.

“This year, I am living my truth and entering my soft power era. I know when to say no!” explains Heart as Boy asks her how turning the big 4-0 has changed her perspective on fame.

Coincidentally celebrating her 27th year in the industry, Heart shares how she has finally found her voice, “I am finally free,” she says.  At her age and tenure, she no longer feels she needs to scream in order to be heard, she can live life unapologetically –  thinking less about the expectations put upon her by the media and shifting her priorities towards putting herself first.

Heart shows how turning 40 has matured her and how the Heart we see today is the product of her creativity, passion, and strength throughout all her years.

Today, Heart reveals how fashion is more than just an aesthetic; it’s a form of empowerment and resistance, and in her case, an investment. Breaking the mold and dressing for herself, from couture gowns to a plain T-shirt and jeans, there are no rules when it comes to what’s ‘right’ in fashion.

Next Level Payments Meet Next Level Looks!

    GCash
Heart Evangelista-Escudero, Boy Abunda, and Pam Quinones play a quick game of “Tap or Pass”, where they decide whether to buy shoppable items or pass.

With trends constantly shifting, fashion can sometimes feel intimidating and albeit overwhelming. In order to ease the audience of this burden, this year’s GCash Spotlight featured celebrity stylist Pam Quinones, who joined Heart and Boy onstage for a styling segment that allowed guests to learn more about finding their personal style and what pieces work for them.

Pam Quinones showing Heart curated pieces that can suit her elevated everyday outfit ideas

Featuring three looks inspired by Heart’s Fashion Week outfits, Pam showed guests how the NEW GCash Tap To Pay makes finding your style simple and seamless.

It’s not just about trendy aesthetics or simply dressing well. When I think of Fashion, it is all about what feels good for me, creating something unique that builds on and aligns with my personal style. I see it as a point of view. What I believe in manifests in how I choose to present myself, and have fun in the process.”

As a well-known advocate for conscious spending, Quinones also shared that “If you’re purchasing something that can only be worn once, then you probably should take the time to think about that again, what’s great about the pieces we’ve shown today is that we’re reminding everyone to take a pause before they purchase, showing how you can mix and match different pieces to transform you from business formal to a night out with friends, in a way that is still very unique – it’s great value for money. I always believe that when you choose something, you must commit to giving it the longest possible life. ”

The Future of Payments is a Tap Away

Heart using GCash Tap to Pay at GCash Spotlight

Beyond fame and fashion, GCash Spotlight is a reminder of the brand’s deeper mission of providing accessibility and convenience into the everyday lives of the Filipinos they serve, constantly innovating products to meet their needs.

Now widely accepted at thousands of partner merchants nationwide, the NEW GCash Tap to Pay works on Mastercard-enabled terminals that accept NFC payments. Beyond the Philippines, GCash users are amongst the first to be able to use Tap-to-Pay internationally, via a partnership with Alipay+ and Mastercard, greatly expanding the acceptance of GCash worldwide.

This will make travelling for Filipinos simpler and more seamless, and they can choose to either scan via QR or tap via NFC from small local stores to their favorite restaurants, cafes, and shops while abroad.

Pam Quinones, Magazine Editor and Fashion Stylist, and Ferdie Perez, Product Innovation Head for GCash

“The introduction of the NEW GCash Tap To Pay is in line with GCash’s bigger goal of creating products with our customers in mind, helping provide ease and convenience throughout their day-to-day.

With GCash Tap To Pay, there’s no more fumbling about with signatures and PIN numbers. A single tap is all you need to get exactly what you need– it is quick, fast, instant, and secure. Making everyday moments more convenient and a lot more stylish!” shared Ferdie Perez, product innovation head of G-Xchange, Inc.

Kaspersky: Gaming threats seep into APAC

New threat research from Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence (DFI) team reveals that 11 million gaming account credentials were leaked in 2024. The findings presented during Kaspersky’s Cyber Security Weekend in Da Nang, Vietnam, show that 5.7 million Steam accounts were compromised by infostealer malware in 2024. This notorious type of malware also led to leakage of 6.2 million accounts related to other global gaming platforms: Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, GOG, and EA app.

Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence analyzed leaked Steam credentials associated with APAC countries, based on data from malware log files. Nearly 163,000 leaked credentials were associated with Thailand, followed by the Philippines with 93,000 compromised login-password pairs. Vietnam rounded out the top three with nearly 88,000. In contrast, the lowest numbers were observed for accounts associated with China, Sri Lanka, and Singapore, with approximately 19,000, 11,000, and 4,000 credentials, respectively.

The APAC region has firmly established itself as the global epicenter of gaming. According to a recent report, more than half of the world’s gamers are based here, with markets such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, and emerging Southeast Asian economies contributing to this dominance. The region’s rapid digital adoption, widespread mobile penetration, and youth-driven demand have fueled exponential growth across both casual and competitive gaming segments.

With close to 1.8 billion players and rising, the gaming ecosystem in APAC is not only the largest by volume but also among the most influential in shaping global gaming trends and behaviors. Thus, it does not come as a surprise that the region is fast-becoming a breeding ground for a data-stealing class of cyber threats.

“Cybercriminals often release stolen log files months — or even years — after the original compromise,” explains Polina Tretyak, a digital footprint intelligence analyst at Kaspersky. “Even credentials stolen years ago can resurface on dark web forums, contributing to a growing pool of leaked information. As a result, the number of compromised gaming accounts is likely much higher than what is immediately visible”.

She adds, “It’s important for people to understand that infostealer threats aren’t always instant or obvious. In case one suspects they have been attacked, running a security check and deleting a malware is a first recommended step. In general, regularly updating passwords an avoiding reuse across platforms can help reduce personal risk”.

How gaming threats may affect businesses – in APAC and beyond

Modern businesses may not consider themselves part of the gaming ecosystem, but they still can be in danger: for example, through employees registering on entertainment platforms using a corporate email address. Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence study shows that 7% of Netflix, Roblox, and Discord users whose accounts were leaked registered there using a corporate email address.

The fact that employees may be using corporate emails to register for personal services, including games, introduces cybersecurity risks. Polina Tretyak noted that if the corporate email is exposed in an infostealer leak, it could potentially open the door to broader corporate threats. “For example, attackers may reach out to an employee and lure them into installing malware on a corporate device or brute force the password. If the password uses predictable patterns — such as ‘Word2025!’, it may take just around an hour or less. Also, fraudsters may gain access to various non-corporate systems under employee accounts and retrieve some important data, as well as access the company’s resources,” elaborated Tretyak.

Infostealers are often disguised as cracked games, cheat software, or unofficial mods. They are used by threat actors looking to steal sensitive information of any kind. Their primary target is account passwords, crypto wallet credentials, credit card details, and browser cookies. Once exfiltrated, the stolen data is traded or offered for free on darknet platforms, and may be used by other cybercriminals for further attacks.

Aside from the harm infostealers can inflict, this malicious package is particularly dangerous in hybrid and bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments common across APAC, where personal and work-related activities often coexist on the same device.

How to build defenses against infostealers

If you, as an individual, encounter a data leak through infostealers, the following steps should be taken immediately:

    • Firstly, run full security scans on all devices, removing any detected malware.
    • Second step is changing compromised account passwords.
    • It is also recommended to monitor for suspicious activity associated with the accounts affected by infostealers.

Companies are recommended to monitor dark web markets proactively to detect compromised accounts before they pose risks to customers or employees. A detailed guide on setting up monitoring can be found here. Leverage Kaspersky Digital Footprint Intelligence to track what cybercriminals know about your company’s assets, identify potential attack vectors, and implement protective measures in a timely manner.

PH economy could grow by PHP1.8 trillion with AI

The Philippines, Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital economy, is on the cusp of a major transformation driven by AI. According to a new report by London-based public policy research agency Public First, AI has the potential to eventually boost the country’s economy by a staggering PHP1.8 trillion (approximately USD31 billion), marking a significant 7% increase in gross value added.

The Turbocharging Growth: The Philippines’ AI Opportunity report highlights AI’s role as a key driver for the country to sustain its economic momentum.

According to the study,  AI is already a part of many Filipinos’ lives, with around half of the population regularly using AI tools at least once a week. This widespread adoption is matched by a hopeful outlook, as 46% of Filipinos are optimistic about AI’s potential for the country, and 50% are optimistic about its personal impact.

Boosting productivity and efficiency, leading to more gains

The report offers a deeper look at how AI can benefit everyday Filipinos and address some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. The technology is likely to significantly augment the productivity of 37% of the workforce. This could save the average worker up to three hours a week on administrative tasks, leading to potential wage increases of over 6% and boosting average worker productivity by over PHP110,000 annually.

The study points to the critical role of AI in driving growth across key sectors through productivity gains:

    • Wholesale and Retail with a potential PHP410 billion increase (a 9% rise in gross value added or GVA)
    • Finance and Insurance with a potential PHP300 billion increase (12% rise in GVA), and
    • Public Administration and Defense with a potential PHP109 billion increase (9% rise in GVA).

Beyond the numbers, the report shows AI’s potential to address national challenges, such as cybersecurity and food security. AI tools could help reduce the costs of cybersecurity threats by half (PHP180 billion) and boost the productivity of the agricultural sector by PHP120 billion by 2035 through precision farming and early pest detection.

As it boosts efficiency and productivity by introducing new tools for work, AI is also set to create the next wave of jobs in the Philippines.

The report suggests that AI will also create new roles in managing AI tools and performing more complex, higher-value work. This shift underscores the importance of upskilling, with the report noting that 90% of workers are interested in training to understand how AI models work.
