Ready for your travel vlogger era? Here are 5 things you need to get started

In the digital age, there’s an undeniable appeal to documenting our adventures through the lens of a travel vlog.  Whether it’s the sun-kissed beaches of Palawan, the bustling streets of Manila, or the serene landscapes of northern Luzon, vlogging allows us to freeze moments in time and share them with a larger audience.  There’s a certain magic in framing a breathtaking sunset, narrating the taste of street food, or capturing the laughter of newfound friends — all while holding a camera and pouring our hearts into the lens.  And with technology today, you can even rely on your mobile phone to take great photos and videos. These memories become more than images; they’re our personal time capsules, filled with emotions, spontaneity and the raw beauty of life on the road.

But beyond the picturesque backdrops and cinematic shots lies connection.  As travel vloggers, we’re not just storytellers; we’re curators of experiences.  Our viewers join us on the winding paths, taste the local delicacies, and feel the rush of adrenaline as we leap off waterfalls.  Through our vlogs, we invite them into our world, and they become part of our journey, leaving comments, sharing their own travel tips, and sometimes even meeting us in person.  It’s a symbiotic relationship fueled by the shared love for exploration and the desire to inspire others to embark on their own adventures. So take pics, short videos, or full-length vlogs — use a phone, camera, or whatever you have. It’s simple, really.

Ready to start your own vlog and create a connection with fellow travelers? To take the guesswork away, here is a “cheat sheet” of the top 5 things you need to keep in mind to create travel vlog-worthy posts.

    1. Know Your Audience and plan your content for them.  Understand who your travel vlog is for and what they want to see.  Tailor your content to cater to their interests and preferences.  Create a shortlist and map out a story that you want to tell.  By planning your content strategically, your vlog will resonate with your viewers and keep them coming back for more.
    1. Use a Wide-Angle Lens to capture landscapes and cityscapes, but make sure to capture details. If you’re using your phone, it’s as easy as clicking 0.5 or wide angle. Don’t forget to pay attention to small moments and details — they add depth and authenticity to your storytelling.
    1. Natural light is your best friend. No matter what you use, a phone or a proper camera, nothing beats natural light. Capturing photos or videos at the “golden hours” of sunrise or sunset can instantly add drama and magic to your shots.
    1. Edit and optimize your videos or photos. With phone apps these days, it can be as simple as clicking the reel feature so the phone can do all the work for you. But if you’re willing to go the extra mile, prepare your content to go public by applying color correction and filters where needed, adding in text overlays to highlight important information, editing for smooth transitions between clips, enhancing audio, and optimizing for length – don’t make your video too long that it loses the viewers’ attention.
    1. Promote your vlog or content.  Share your vlog channel or even your once-a-week uploads on your personal page across your social media accounts — use captions that catch attention and interact with your audience when they comment.  You may want to collaborate with other creators so that you leverage their audience.  Encouraging viewers to share your vlog through promotions or contests with appealing rewards or even tagging your friends to get the engagement going will definitely help a lot.

Some final tips: Make the most of your phone by knowing all its camera features. If you have the extra money, invest in a camera that can shoot high-resolution videos, a good mic, a stable tripod, and a basic lighting setup. When filming locals or in sensitive areas, make sure you ask permission before you film.

Finally, it would help to connect with like-minded travel vloggers from whom you can learn about creating content, what equipment to buy, destinations to visit, and experiences to try out. Join The Lakwatsa Life on Facebook and hear from your fellow lakwatseros and lakwatseras about their travel experiences, best practices, places to check out, and everything else about traveling.

Decoding Global Talent 2024 Report: PH ranks 56th as preferred work destination; 80% of Filipinos willing to relocate overseas

The Philippines ranks 56th globally as a place of employment for those seeking opportunities abroad, improving its ranking by 11 spots since 2020 according to the latest Decoding Global Talent 2024 by Jobstreet by SEEK, Boston Consulting Group, and The Network.

The study is based on survey data from more than 150,000 respondents in the workforce spanning 188 countries.

When asked why they chose the Philippines as one of their top career destinations, most of the respondents noted the welcoming culture and inclusiveness (52%), perceived good quality of life (45%), cost of living (43%), and quality of job opportunities (43%). While the perception of the Philippines has seen a notable uptick, the country is still far compared to top global countries and ranks low within the Southeast Asia (SEA) region.

Talent from neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, as well as English-speaking countries such as USA and Canada, expressed interest in working in the Philippines.

    Filipino mobility trends

While foreign jobseekers see the Philippines as a potential destination for work, Filipino talent display a strong interest in relocating abroad for work, with 80% expressing readiness compared to 68% in the SEA region. However, it’s worth noting that the interest has declined significantly between 2018 (96%) and 2020 (91%).

Unlike the global trend where younger candidates are more willing to work overseas, Filipinos across life stages said they are willing to relocate — 80% of those who said yes are highly educated, 82% are young or below 30 years old.

For Filipinos who are willing to work abroad, the Global Talent report states that financial motives and career progression rank highly as their reasons to relocate. They are also motivated by the search for better social systems and healthcare when thinking of working overseas. Meanwhile, the rest of the respondents who are not willing to relocate (20%) said they decided to stay due to not being able to bring their family, the cost of relocation, or a strong attachment to their home country, among others.

In terms of the job roles of Filipinos who are looking to relocate, the results are diverse, ranging from low to high skill levels. Almost all workers in the craft professions, as well as manual and physical jobs, consider working abroad. It is followed by other more skillful professions such as research/laboratory, engineering/technical, and services and hospitality. On the other end, marketing and media practitioners are the least likely to consider moving abroad.

The Global Talent report also reveals that about one-third of Filipinos prefer long-term work abroad without plans to return (35%). This differs significantly from workers in neighboring countries who typically prefer shorter overseas assignments of about three years. This discrepancy raises concerns about a potential and significant threat of irreversible brain drain in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the willingness of the global workforce to work remotely for a foreign employer without a physical presence in their home country has significantly increased — now at 66% from 57% in 2020. In the Philippines, Filipino professionals are now more eager for remote international work than ever (84%), way above the SEA and global averages.

“We encourage Filipino employers to develop a global talent strategy, as we may experience talent shortages in the future considering the number of Filipino jobseekers willing to work abroad. They can start by providing better compensation or benefits and better career opportunities, as these are the main reasons people seek work abroad. Alternatively, Filipino employers can also consider attracting the working population from other countries,” said Dannah Majarocon, managing director, Philippines, Jobstreet by SEEK.

NLEX BRAVE program empowers young women

NLEX Corporation recently launched another woman-centered community development program called Barangay Responders and Advocates of Violence-free Environment (BRAVE). The NLEX BRAVE program empowers young women to play a more active role in their community by training them to become disaster and emergency responders for their respective barangays.

“Ang mga kababaihan ay may unique qualities na angkop para sa tungkulin bilang community responders –  sila ay highly adaptable, sensitive, at compassionate. Ito ang mga dahilan kung bakit namin binuo ang isang programang magbibigay oportunidad sa mga kabataang babae na manguna o makatulong sa kanilang barangay sa pag-manage ng sitwasyon sa tuwing may disaster or emergency,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager, J. Luigi L. Bautista.

    NLEX BRAVE
Participants and barangay officials from select NLEX Connector host communities with Meggie Ochoa, Girl Scout of the Philippines Manila Council and NLEX Corporation team

Twenty-five participants from select NLEX Connector host communities underwent a three-day training camp in San Fernando, Pampanga, for the NLEX BRAVE program.

In partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Philippines Manila Council, a comprehensive training program on Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management (BDRRM), emergency first aid, and self-affirmation exercises was conducted.

    NLEX BRAVE

Jiu-jitsu World Champion Meggie Ochoa also taught the NLEX BRAVE program participants basic jiu-jitsu and self-defense techniques. She also shared an empowering message to the ladies, reminding them that despite the natural difference in physical strength between men and women, women can protect themselves and others using the right physical skills and knowledge. They can also be effective advocates of a violence-free environment. Ochoa also said, “Programs like this will help them to be more equipped and ready to respond and act in emergencies.”

All these activities aim to prepare young women to be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit for their new role as emergency responders. Through the NLEX BRAVE program, they were equipped with new knowledge and skills and taught the importance of preparedness, resiliency, and standing up against violence.

    NLEX BRAVE

“Sobrang importante po ang adbokasiya ng NLEX na hubugin ang kakayahan ng mga kabataang babae upang magamit sa pagtulong sa aming komunidad tuwing sakuna at sa tuluyang pagtigil ng kahit anong uri ng violence sa aming komunidad,” Shenna Orbe, participant from Brgy. 204 said.

Since 2005, NLEX has been at the forefront of corporate social responsibility initiatives as part of their contribution to nation-building. The company also launched two capacity-building programs this year: Pag-unlad at Paglago ng Pamayanan (PUNLA), a comprehensive training program for women-led small businesses; and Barangay Security Watch, an in-depth seminar designed to capacitate barangay police and officials with knowledge and skills in maintaining peace and order in their community.

NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the toll road arm of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).

NTC SmartClass Homeschooling helps parents wear different hats for their kids

Backed by the National Teachers College (NTC) and APEC Schools, NTC SmartClass Homeschooling is providing a solution to many families. Schooling poses numerous challenges for children, and parents are not exempt from its demands. They face tasks such as bringing kids to school and being present to support their learning. Many parents today also have to juggle work alongside these chores.

For Rochelle Bondoc, parent to a ninth grader, the SmartClass Homeschooling program is not just a convenient option, but one that cultivates her son’s potential.

“For us, SmartClass is more than a school. It is the cornerstone of our effort to engage with our son and provide him with a comprehensive education,” Bondoc said. “It has become a platform where he passionately pursues his interests, fostering the development of essential skills.”

Through its constructivist approach, SmartClass Homeschooling uses the learners’ existing knowledge and experiences to stir up the teaching. This way, students are pushed to be more independent as they drive their own learning. To achieve this, the subjects in SmartClass are integrated. Students learn concepts in math, science, languages, and other subjects in a real-world setting.

This way, the learning translates to the development of 21st-century skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, grit, creativity, and collaboration. In a survey conducted by SmartClass Homeschooling, 9 out of 10 parents said that their kids have also developed integrity, gratitude, and ownership.

Mark Xian Bagtong, an 8th grader, has established a love for learning at a young age. “Do not be afraid that you might commit mistakes. It is part of the process to learn. Always have fun learning,” Bagtong said.

With asynchronous classes and distance learning methods, SmartClass learners can accomplish tasks on their own time when the family has to travel for vacation or business or take part in other activities. The flexibility paves the way for more holistic development and a healthy study-life balance, both crucial in molding young individuals.

“It allows for a continuous and efficient learning experience, as students can adjust their schedules to meet their individual needs and preferences,” explained Enrique Jandusay Jr., another SmartClass Homeschooling parent.

Canon EOS R1: Be one with mastery

The new Canon EOS R1 is a full-frame mirrorless camera and its first flagship EOS R system camera. With its powerful new image processing and autofocus systems, the new camera is setting new standards and redefining speed in the digital era.

“Canon’s top-of-the-line “1 series” professional cameras have supported professional users for over 50 years, evolving to stay at the forefront of users’ needs and technological advancements. The EOS R1 carries this legacy into a new era, empowering users to take the mastery of visual expression to a whole new level.” said Ichinomiya Takashi, director of Regional ICB Sales & Marketing Division, Canon Singapore.

Top Notch Speed: Accelerated Capture Image Processing

The Canon EOS R1 harnesses the power of a 24-megapixel back-illuminated (BSI) stacked CMOS sensor to elevate images to an impressive 96-megapixels with its unique In-Camera Upscaling technology. The sensor’s improved light efficiency and faster readout lay the foundation for the revolutionary capabilities of the EOS R1.

With the new Accelerated Capture image processing system, featuring the innovative DIGIC Accelerator alongside DIGIC X, processing speed and power are significantly amplified. Unprecedented levels of AF and subject tracking performance can be achieved through deep learning algorithms, where detailed scene analysis is enabled. With features such as In-Camera Upscaling and Neural Network Noise Reduction now executable in-camera, the Canon EOS R1 supports fast-paced, time-sensitive workflows, ensuring the swift delivery of high-quality, publication-ready images to editors or press offices.

Capture Decisive Moments: Smarter Subject Detection and Tracking

The EOS R1 is Canon’s first camera to feature the next-generation Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system. This system leverages the Accelerated Capture image processing system’s powerful processing speed and power to achieve AF and subject detection performance that significantly surpasses that of the EOS R3.

One revolutionary new AF feature is the Action Priority AF mode, which detects crucial actions such as shooting, passing, and heading, specific to soccer, basketball, or volleyball.  Using deep learning, details such as ball position, players’ joints, and the presence of multiple people will be analysed. Once such actions are detected, the AF frame automatically switches to the subjects performing these actions, capturing those split-second decisive moments that might be missed, especially during dynamic, fast-paced games.

Be it shooting event photos or videos, the Register People Priority feature will come in handy; the camera will prioritise up to 10 specific preregistered individuals and constantly focus on them, even when the subjects’ faces are side facing.

Users can also look forward to improved AF and subject tracking in the existing People, Animal, and Vehicle-priority modes, as the Dual Pixel Intelligent AF is aided by Cross-type AF, which improves the camera’s ability to detect small subjects and subjects affected by patterns and/or horizontal lines—such as players wearing horizontal stripes or when shooting from behind net or fence.

In-camera Upscaling: Instant High-resolution Extreme Crops

The new In-Camera Upscaling function uses deep learning algorithms to quadruple the number of pixels in an image while preserving details and image quality, achieving image files that resemble those shot on a 96-megapixel camera. This will be useful for achieving high-quality extreme crops on the spot, which can be sent directly from the camera to a press office.

Image noise can become more apparent when images are magnified, but this will be addressed by the new in-camera Neural Network Noise Reduction function to improve image quality further. The function uses deep learning-based algorithms to reduce high-fidelity noise on RAW images, achieving amazingly clean high ISO JPEG images straight out of the camera.

The Canon EOS R1 features a 5-axis In-Body IS (Image Stabiliser), with a newly designed mechanism and improved algorithms that increase its effectiveness compared to the EOS R3. When shooting with a compatible RF lens with in-lens stabiliser, users can expect up to 8.5 stops’ equivalent image stabilisation so handheld shot images where tripods are not available will remain sharp.

    Never Miss Crucial Moments

The Canon EOS R1 can shoot high-speed bursts at up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter, which allows for silent shooting, and up to 12 fps with the mechanical and electronic first-curtain shutter. This enables users to capture the perfect moment within fast action sequences. The faster sensor readout speed reduces rolling shutter distortion to practically negligible levels. This is equivalent to the EOS-1D X Mark III mechanical shutter, which will encourage users who previously refrained from using the electronic shutter due to potential subject distortion when capturing high-speed action. Reduced rolling shutter distortion will also benefit video, allowing for seamless action footage and fast camera movement without wobbly artifacts.

The Canon EOS R1 comes with pre-continuous shooting for stills and pre-recording for videos. These functions capture moments before pressing the shutter or starting to record, making up for lost split-seconds. The pre-recording function captures up to 20 frames before the shutter button is fully pressed and can be combined with Action Priority AF or Register People Priority. It also captures a scene up to 5 seconds before recording video and stops recording when there is a change of scene, reducing unnecessary footage and streamlining post-production work.

    Seamless Operation on the Field

The Canon EOS R1 is also designed for seamless control and operation, enabling better responsiveness to dynamic situations. Eye Control AF, which allows users to control the AF frame with their eyes has been improved with new line-of-sight optics and detection algorithm, allowing for a faster, more reliable line of sight detection. The 9.44 million-dot, 0.9x magnification blackout-free EVF, which offers the highest definition and magnification in the EOS series, ensures that users get a large, bright, clear, and uninterrupted view of their subject and should satisfy even the DSLR users. An anti-fog structure in the EVF prevents fogging even under hot and humid conditions.

Several new design and interface features provide more shortcuts for instant recall of stored AF settings, allowing faster user response to changing shooting conditions. These include:

    • Focus preset, a function previously available only on super telephoto lenses that enables any camera button to be assigned to set the focus to a predetermined focus position so users can set focus instantly on a desired area.
    • 2-level AF-On button functionality, where the AF-On button can be assigned to change different settings when half-pressed and fully pressed.
    • Ability to register and recall different AF settings for different activities and shooting situations preregistered by the user.

Two CFexpress Type-B slots support steady high-speed recording of data-intensive files, such as 6K 60p RAW videos and 40 fps full-resolution burst images, to either card, with the other card available for simultaneously recording still images and proxy video files.

With dual shooting function, users can simultaneously record Full HD 60p videos and 16:9 JPEG, approx. 17.8-megapixel still images, improving efficiency in situations such as breaking news, interview videos where both stills and videos are required.

The Canon EOS R1 is built with a light but strong magnesium alloy exterior, making it 23% lighter and 11% smaller than the EOS-1D X Mark III. It maintains an impact-resistant build and has dust- and water-resistant weather-sealing, to withstand extreme weather conditions.

    Canon EOS R1

    Designed for Swift Editorial Workflows

The Canon EOS R1 is the first EOS system camera to support the new Wi-Fi 6/6E wireless protocol in addition to the existing 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands, allowing for faster wireless file transmission to a smartphone, PC, or FTP/FTPS/SFTP server. It also supports the new high-speed 2.5GBase-T wired LAN protocol to existing wired LAN support. Users can use the latest high-speed communication standards to swiftly transmit large numbers of still photos and videos to their editors—an asset for news reporting where time is of the essence.

Other features that will benefit professional media workflows include:

    • More precise deep learning-based metering.
The combination of smaller metering zones and expanded deep learning applications enables improved white balance and autoexposure accuracy across various scenes. Thus, photographers can rely more on the camera to produce accurate skin tones and sky colours, as well as more vivid greens. This enables users to rely more on the camera to determine the best settings when handling unpredictable, fluctuating environments. It also results in more beautiful images straight out of the camera.
    • Blurred/out of focus image detection.
This function analyses and scores blurred and out-of-focus JPEG/HEIF images with people’s faces shot using the electronic shutter. It streamlines reviewing and selects the best images from the tremendous number captured by the high-speed electronic shutter, allowing photographers to upload their images sooner.
    • Powerful industry-standard video options.
Besides its 6K 60p internal RAW video capability, the Canon EOS R1 adopts many advanced video features shared with the Cinema EOS, such as Canon Log 2 and 3, false colours, and proxy recording. It is also the first EOS series camera to include the Custom Picture colour presets and support for in-camera LUT applications, previously exclusive to Cinema EOS cameras.
    • Greater usability with Speedlites.
The Canon EOS R1’s faster sensor readout speed enables flash photography support even during continuous shooting in the electronic shutter mode. The flash sync speed is the EOS R series’ highest at 1/400 sec, allowing more flexibility to use a wide aperture or freeze action without resorting to high-speed sync.

Cisco and Mapúa University unveil digital classrooms equipped with new AI-led collaboration

Mapúa University, one of the top engineering and technological schools in the Philippines, unveiled how it will leverage AI-led collaboration and connectivity tools to redefine the digital classroom experience for students in the upcoming academic year, beginning in August 2024.

Created in collaboration with Cisco as part of its Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program in the Philippines, UGNAYAN 2030, the country’s first digital classrooms supports Mapúa’s Tri-X (triple experience) teaching and learning framework, which gives learners the power to choose their mode of participation for every lesson, whether that is face-to-face, synchronous, or asynchronous learning.

“The future of education is here, and our learning modalities at Mapúa are breaking barriers by creating limitless opportunities for personalized, accessible learning. We are excited for this next chapter of our partnership with Cisco to enable students to achieve better learning outcomes with greater flexibility and personalized learning with our digital classrooms. This is a big step towards our vision to foster sustainable socio-economic growth through innovation, digital transformation, and lifelong education,” said Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo, president and chief executive officer of Mapúa University.

A strategic partnership with government leadership, industry, and academia to accelerate countries’ national digital agendas, the CDA program in the Philippines, UGNAYAN 2030, aims to build greater digital resilience for the Philippines by addressing the gaps it is facing under the key pillars of connectivity, collaboration, and cybersecurity.

“Technology is transforming the way we work, learn, and live. We are excited to support Mapúa University’s transformative journey to become a leading innovation hub that utilizes cutting-edge teaching and learning methods under UGNAYAN 2030. By helping the university leverage AI and inclusive collaboration tools in the classroom, we are closing the learning divide, enhancing student access, and ensuring quality education for every student nationwide so that no one gets left behind,” said Zaza Soriano-Nicart, managing director of Cisco Philippines.

With support from ICT solutions integrator Microdata, Cisco’s purpose-built artificial intelligence (AI)-powered collaboration tools and smart cameras will help to create inclusive, engaging, and secure learning experiences for hybrid learning. At an exclusive media preview, Mapúa showcased the full range of these capabilities:

    • Webex Boards enable students and teachers to join video meetings and serve as a digital canvas for digital whiteboarding and annotation of shared content.
    • AI-powered features through Webex Suite deliver immersive experiences with features like background noise removal optimizing speakers’ voices and people focus cropping the videos of remote participants automatically so they can be seen more clearly and help students feel more connected in hybrid classes. Real-time automated closed captions are available in all meetings, making them more accessible.
    • AI-generated meeting summaries that include highlights, chapters, and action items in real-time and with every recorded lecture also help students catch up on what they might have missed in class.
    • Meraki cloud-managed smart cameras, configured to work seamlessly with underlying wireless connectivity, offer physical security to classrooms. The wide angle, fixed focus lens offers panoramic wide area coverage, enhancing surveillance capabilities even in low lighting.

Secure by design, Webex harnesses enterprise-grade protection that is built in, not bolted on to verify every learner, protect every device and browser, and ensure that all communications are secure with encryption.

The university now boasts five digital classrooms; three are located at the Intramuros Campus, delivering courses on Engineering, Architecture, Liberal Arts, and Athletics, and two at the Makati Campus, providing courses on Information Technology, Media Studies, Business, Health Sciences, and Nursing. In the new academic year in August, Mapúa University will open the digital classrooms for official use in course lectures, extra-curricular activities, and inter-campus planning sessions and meetings across its Intramuros, Makati, Laguna, and Davao Campuses.

These smart classrooms represent a step towards realizing Mapúa’s ambition of becoming a full-fledged smart campus. In the next phase of its journey, the university will look at further leveraging digital classrooms to make education accessible across borders and drive an internationalized education experience for its students.

Users can automatically receive announcements and messages from Magsaysay, especially in times of emergencies.
