QC gov’t, Ninja Van partner to support local businesses

The Quezon City government and tech-enabled express logistics company Ninja Van Philippines have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to extend vital support to the city’s local businesses, particularly those in e-commerce.

The MOU was signed by Quezon CIty Mayor Joy Belmonte, Ninja Van Philippines country head Jose Alvin Perez, and chief commercial officer for the Philippines and regional head of marketing of Ninja Van Philippines Sabina Lopez-Vergara. Serving as witnesses were Claro Paulo Ortiz, head of Legal, Security, and Public Affairs of Ninja Van Philippines, and Mona Celine Marie Yap, head of the QC-Small Businesses and Cooperatives Development Promotions Office (SBCDPO).

“The Quezon City government recognizes the transformative power of interconnectivity and technology as drivers of a responsive government,” Belmonte said, adding: “We are excited to work with Ninja Van Philippines to harness technology and innovation to serve our constituents better.”

Perez, for his part, said the company looks forward to working with the local government to make it even more inclusive and business-friendly. “Ninja Van recognizes the significant role of reliable and efficient logistics in nation-building. We are proud to have found a partner in the Quezon City government who shares the same commitment to empowering local businesses,” Perez said.

Under the MOU, Ninja Van and the SBCDPO will explore and develop programs aimed at building capacity among the city’s micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSME). This partnership will help bolster local businesses and upskill local entrepreneurs by leveraging the company’s expertise in harnessing e-commerce and logistics.

Logistics as a Driver of Nation-Building

Ninja Van’s comprehensive logistics solutions include Ninja Fulfillment, which offers all-in-one manpower, warehousing, and inventory management, enabling online sellers and business owners to save on additional operational costs. Newly launched business-to-business delivery solution Ninja Restock supports the timely restocking of medium-sized businesses from a centralized warehouse, eliminating exorbitant fees and long waiting times.

As the pioneering private courier partner of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Ninja Van enabled litigants from across the country to submit documents to any legal court through the provider. This provided the public with a convenient way to file and send court documents while reducing congestion in courts and supporting speedy case resolution.

In a bid to support capacity building among micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises, Ninja Van has also partnered with the Department of Trade and Industry to launch the DIGeCONOMY Bootcamp Series. Earlier this year, the logistics service provider also signed an MOU with the city governments of Pasig and Cabuyao to help promote security, business continuity, and the ease of delivery services.

ADAS 10th Anniversary to highlight PH modernization program

The 5^th edition of the Asian Defense and Security Exhibition (ADAS) will take place from 25 to 27 September 2024 at World Trade Centre, Manila, Philippines. Organized by APAC Expo, the biennial event comes under the auspices of the Office of the President, Department of National Defense, National Security Council and Bagong Pilipinas. This year marks the celebration of ADAS’s 10th Anniversary in the Philippines and is poised to be the largest event in the series.

Themed “Building on a Decade of Defense Capability,” this established event is positioned to be the Philippines’ flagship tri-service event, providing a complete overview of the next phase of modernization programs across the tri-services. The ADAS trade exhibition will showcase the latest innovations and key upgrades in capability for the Navy, Air Force, and Army. At the same time, the ADAS Symposium will host prominent government officials, industry leaders, and academia at this three-day conference.

Keeping abreast of emerging defense material and technologies is crucial to the development of a nation’s defense and deterrent capability.

“The Philippine defense department is focusing on speedily building up capabilities, systems, and skill sets in order to meet the interoperability skills towards the credible deterrence necessary under the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC.) This not only places a premium on modernizing the physical assets of all services of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), but also in building capabilities in asymmetric warfare, information security, cyber defense and cyber security to effectively adapt to the rapidly evolving defense landscape,” the Department of National Defense stated.

Spanning a 14,500sqm venue, event participation has increased by 35% since the 2022 edition, with over 250 participating companies and 15 country pavilions. Some 15,000 senior government officials, operational experts, industry leaders, and academia from all over the world are expected to converge at the event to discuss the latest solutions, strategies, best practices, and challenges and foster greater collaboration within the regional tri-service community.

Centered around the theme “Asymmetric Warfare,” the ADAS Symposium delves into a spectrum of specialized topics, including mosaic/asymmetric warfare, cybersecurity, and defense, as well as a session on building local capacity. In September, as part of the commemoration of the Philippines National Cyber-Security Month, delegates can also look forward to sharing their past experiences on drone and anti-drone wars from neighboring countries.

ADAS managing director Andrew Marriott said, “Given the scale and number of Islands within the Philippines and its geographic position, it is imperative to continue rebuilding its defense capability with ongoing modernization programs. Visa enables contactless payment in Cebu and Mandaue City modern jeepneys in first transit project in the Philippines

Visa, a world leader in digital payments, is collaborating with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI), a transit mobility solutions provider, and GHL, a leading nationwide payment service provider and payment acquirer. This collaboration has enabled the use of Visa cards for contactless payment on modern jeepneys in Cebu and Mandaue City, the second biggest city in Cebu.

The initiative kicked off with an official launch ceremony at the Cebu IT Park Transport Terminal, with Good Transport Solutions Inc. (GTSI) working in partnership with local transport operators, Lahug Apas Transport Cooperative (LATRANSCO) and Mandaue Transport Cooperative (MTC), to launch 120 modern jeepneys in Cebu and 20 modern jeepneys in Mandaue City. The onboard terminals in these vehicles now accept Visa payments. This initiative, part of a pilot project, signifies Visa’s commitment to promoting transit acceptance in the Philippines with plans to expand to more modes of transit in the coming years.

In February 2024, Cebu experienced a 69% year-on-year increase in visitors, welcoming 104,439 tourists, according to the Department of Tourism. Meanwhile, Mandaue City, a popular tourist destination in Cebu, recorded 228,472 tourist arrivals between January and September 2022. With such strong tourism growth, the ability to use Visa cards on public transit significantly enhances convenience, as travelers increasingly prefer secure, contactless digital payments. Visa’s Global Travel Intentions Study highlights this shift, revealing that 97% of Asia Pacific travelers plan to use card payments (credit, debit, or prepaid) on their trips, while only 17% intend to carry foreign currency (cash).

Resetting your modem can be a simple yet effective way to solve many common internet issues. Whether you’re experiencing slow speeds, or intermittent connections, or your WiFi just isn’t working as it should, a quick reset can often do the trick.

To see if your modem needs a reset, check its lights. If the LOS or third light from the left is red, that means there’s no connection. If the PON or second light from the left is not on or is blinking, you may have connection issues. In both cases, a reset may do the trick to bring your modem back to life.

Globe At Home shows you five easy steps to get your modem back in action:

Step 1: Turn off and unplug your modem

Start by turning off your modem. Most modems have a power button located on the back or side of the device. Press this button to turn off the device, then unplug the power adapter from the modem.

Step 2: Wait for 30 seconds

Wait for 30 seconds to give your modem time to fully power down and clear any temporary issues that may have been causing connectivity problems.

Step 3: Check your cables

Take a moment to check if all the cables connected to your modem are secure. This includes the power cable, fiber patch cord, Ethernet cables, and any other connections your modem might have. Loose or improperly connected cables could be a source of connectivity issues. Double-check them to save you from future headaches.

Step 4: Plug back in and power on

After your 30-second wait, it’s time to bring your modem back to life. Plug the power adapter back into the modem. Once connected, press the power button to turn the modem on.

Step 5: Wait for the lights and reconnect to WiFi

Your modem will go through a series of checks as it powers up. You’ll see the lights blinking and flashing in various patterns. Wait for these lights to stabilize. Once stable, it’s time to reconnect your devices to the WiFi.

Don’t let water in

Plan your route to avoid areas prone to flooding. Riding through deep water can be dangerous and may damage your motorcycle. Water and moisture can damage your motorcycle in so many ways: they can cause your electrical system to short-circuit, contaminate your fuel, and even lead to rust. To prevent these, clean your bike regularly to get rid of moisture and ensure ample lubrication where applicable. Make sure to also keep your fuel tank cap tightly sealed at all times.

Keep your braking system healthy

Wet roads can increase stopping distances, so you need reliable brakes. On a wet and slippery road, your brakes can save your life. This is why it is important to make sure that your braking system is in excellent condition especially this rainy season. Regularly check your brake lines and brake pads for damage and replace them if needed. iQor donates over 400 Computers to 53 schools in Angeles City, Pampanga

iQor Philippines, a managed services provider of customer engagement and technology-enabled business process outsourcing (BPO) solutions, recently donated 413 refurbished computers to the Department of Education, benefiting 53 schools in Angeles City, Pampanga, through a handover event entitled, Empowering Communities Through Education: iQor and RapidTech Sustainable Donation.

Access to computers is essential for students, providing them with the tools to enhance their learning experience, advance digital literacy, and prepare for opportunities in today’s technology-driven society. This initiative also guarantees that units are allocated to elementary, junior, and senior high schools, as identified by the regional office of the Department of Education, ensuring students at all educational levels have access to essential technology.

This donation aligns with iQor’s sustainability strategy, which aims to make a positive impact in the communities where it operates and on the environment. “We believe our business is only as strong as our community. This initiative is a way for us to give back to the Angeles community that has supported our growth in the city. We are grateful to be able to contribute to the development of students and at the same time do good for the environment by reducing our waste and carbon footprint,” said Rod Hoddinott, iQor Philippines Country Lead. “We will continue with our commitment to do our share in creating a sustainable future for the next generation.”

iQor’s project partner, Rapid Technologies, Inc. (Rapid Tech), an expert in providing enterprise-grade Microsoft-Certified Refurbished IT hardware solutions, handled the refurbishment of these computers to suit the learning needs of the beneficiary students, along with the installation of necessary software and provision of keyboard and mouse sets. This collaboration exemplifies how the private sector can contribute to improving educational resources in the Philippines.

The official handover of the computers was formalized through the signing of a Deed of Donation between iQor, represented by Philippines country lead Rod Hoddinott and chief people officer Fleurette Navarro and the City of Angeles, represented by vice mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigting. The local government unit collaborated with the Department of Education in distributing the computer units and peripherals.

iQor chief people officer Fluerette Navarro said, “iQor remains committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of young learners,” said Hoddinott. “By providing these computers, we aim to empower students with the essential tools they need to thrive in their educational journey. Raphaela Kercee Vendel Pineda Lazatin, officer in charge of the City Information Office – Angeles City; Rapid Tech executives led by general manager Kristin Santos; and DepEd officials headed by asst. division schools superintendent Dr. Enrique Angeles Jr., CESO VI, and senior education program specialist Alberto M. Otchengco.
