Android began rolling out updates for the Nougat August 22, its seventh major release. According to the official Android blog, the update is optimized for increased productivity and easier access to phone functions.

Among its features is the multi-window function that allows users to run two apps side-by-side with resizable dividers. The quick switch function enables switching between two recent apps by double tapping the Overview button. Nougat also allows users to reply directly to notifications without having to open any application.

The drop down menu was improved as well, with more controls and an option for users to move each setting within the menu. The OS now has multiple locale support which provides users the option to present information in multiple languages as in search results.

Android included support for the 3D rendering API VulkanTM, allowing improved graphics for newer games, as well as for Google’s Daydream VR platform with devices and peripherals coming later in the year.

Android also added 72 new emojis to the over 1,500 already-existing ones.

The updates are now available for Nexus devices, and will progressively be made downloadable for other devices over the course of a few months.
