    Epson SureColor SC-P5330 set to redefine professional photography printing

    Smart invests in advanced SMS blocking system, empowers customers to fight fraudsters

    In a report submitted by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), the telco reiterated its compliance with the SIM Registration law, having incorporated the necessary enhancements and verification mechanisms that its regulators the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) had required all telcos to implement back in December 18, 2023.

    In the same report, Smart also informed CICC about its SMS blocking efforts that has resulted in the blocking of a significant number of fraudulent SMS messages and mobile numbers. In the first six months of this year, Smart has blacklisted more than 615,788 mobile numbers tied to illicit and fraudulent activities, including spamming and SMShing scams. This number includes fraudulently registered SIMs, purged through Smart’s strict validation process of all SIM registrations. 

    Additionally, Smart also assured CICC through its report, that it is investing significantly and continuously improving its SMS blocking systems, as the landscape of messaging scams constantly evolves. It is also actively engaging its provincial distributors, regional dealers, and other trade partners to ensure the security and integrity of the sale and distribution process of Smart SIMs. Likewise, the group’s #BeCyberSmart and #MagingCyberSmart campaign continues to share practical tips on identifying techniques used by scammers to run their fraudulent activities.

    Google launches AI Opportunity Fund to build an AI-ready workforce in APAC

    Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google, announced a USD15 million commitment to its AI Opportunity Fund. This initiative aims to train over one million people in Asia Pacific including the Philippines in essential AI skills, fostering a more skilled and prepared workforce for the future.

    Through the USD15 million AI Opportunity Fund, Google will invest in the development of critical AI skills and build confidence among workers and job-seekers, particularly those in underserved communities across the region. This complements Google’s existing digital and AI skilling initiatives in Asia-Pacific, such as AI Essentials for beginners, AI Startup School for entrepreneurs, and Google Cloud AI programs for businesses.

    In collaboration with the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN), a network of social investors, and supported by the Asian Development Bank, this fund will seek applications from social impact organizations that can help us reach those most likely to benefit from AI training. AVPN will work with local partners, selected through an open call for proposals, to identify specific AI-related challenges and opportunities for underserved job-seekers and micro and small businesses in the region.

    Selected organizations will receive support on AI in their local languages to help them deliver skills training directly to their communities. In addition, cash grants will help remove barriers to learning, such as limited access to educational resources.

    To highlight the speeds that the Yamaha Sniper 155 and Mio Aerox are capable of, Yamaha Philippines came out with a commercial that viewers would have trouble keeping up with, staying true to its tagline, “Live To Be Chased.” 

    How do you sell speed to speed junkies? This was the unique brief Yamaha Motor Philippines gave Dentsu Creative Philippines to show off some of its quickest models, the Sniper155 and Mio Aerox, online.

    Using timestamps, viewers could jump to specific points in the ‘Live To Be Chased’ film and watch the moments that were too fast to catch the first time around. The material embodying speed was designed and shot to be so fast, that viewers could only appreciate the details if they pause or slow down the video playback, which they are encouraged to do with detailed prompts and captions. 

    Naturally, viewers wouldn’t be able to catch every detail of ‘Live To Be Chased’ on the first go. But after every rewatch, they’re rewarded with new adrenaline-filled scenes they missed, making it an experience tailor-made for speed freaks and racing enthusiasts.

    Google Translate adds 110 new languages including Bikol, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Waray

    Google Translate, one of the world’s most popular translation tools, breaks down communication barriers for millions even further with its most recent and largest language expansion ever. 110 new languages have been added to the service, powered by the revolutionary PaLM 2 large language model.

    This update brings the total number of supported languages to 133, empowering over 660 million people with access to information and connection in their native tongue.

    • Regional Filipino languages: Google Translate has further expanded support for the Philippines by including more regional languages from Luzon and the Visayas, namely Bikol, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, and Waray.
    • Major world languages: One of the most significant inclusions was Cantonese. With over 100 million speakers, the language was among the most highly requested ones to be added to Google Translate. The Shahmukhi variety of Punjabi, the most spoken language in Pakistan, as well as the Papua New Guinean creole Tok Pisin, have also been added.
    • Indigenous languages: The volunteer community made significant contributions to more obscure and remote languages, such as Afar and NKo, spoken in parts of Africa.
    • Revitalized languages: Languages at the risk of dying out such as Manx, a Celtic language experiencing a resurgence, is now supported by Google Translate.

    This expansion marks a significant step towards Google’s 1,000 Languages Initiative, aiming to support the world’s most spoken languages. With a quarter of the new additions coming from Africa, Google Translate now offers the largest selection of African languages to date.

    Google prioritized adding the most commonly used forms, like Southern Vlax Romani, while incorporating elements from other dialects to offer a comprehensive experience. The company’s ongoing partnerships with linguists and native speakers ensure constant improvement.

    51% of women-led SMEs increased revenues after accepting digital payments

    Visa, a global leader in digital payments, conducted a survey on small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the Philippines. Findings show that 51% of women-led SMEs and 56% of micro-businesses experienced revenue growth with digital payments adoption. Given women constitute over half of Asia’s population and SMEs’ vital role in the economy, maximizing women’s economic potential could add $89 billion annually to the Asia Pacific economy including in the Philippines. 

    SMEs are crucial for  economic growth in the Philippines, with more than a million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country. The Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry data show that 99.5% of businesses in the country are MSMEs with almost 50% of them in wholesale and retail trade, generating 65% of total employment. Furthermore, the Asian Development Bank estimated that MSMEs contribute around 36% of the country’s GDP[1].

    The Visa study found that managing businesses has become easier for 72% of the surveyed SMEs in the Philippines. Wallets, predominantly GCash, dominate as the main provider of digital payment for SMEs, especially those that are female-led (61%) who were surveyed in the Philippines. Visa has partnered with GCash to introduce the new GCash Card — giving millions of unbanked Filipinos access to the benefits of owning a payment card. 

    Among the businesses that have started accepting digital payments, those accepting cards witnessed the most significant turnover increases (83%). Digital payments provide instant transfers and enable cashless transactions for an enhanced commerce experience. Visa supports SMEs in the Philippines by offering widespread acceptance and robust protection for both merchants and customers, guarding against fraudulent activities.

    Visa recently launched a SME online toolkit to enable tourism merchants to maximize the benefits of contactless payments. In 2023, Visa launched the SME Accelerator Program in the Philippines to support SMEs and partners through competitive pricing, faster onboarding, and comprehensive take-to-market support. The expanded SME Accelerator initiatives will also focus on a wider set of partnerships with ecosystem participants to serve smaller sellers and fast-track solutions deployment for SMEs. 

    The Visa Foundation has also pledged USD100 million over five years to accelerate access for underrepresented and women-led SMEs in APEC economies, including in the Philippines. Of the nearly 67 million SMEs reached by Visa globally, approximately 29.6 million are from APEC economies, with 10.9 million being women-led SMEs.
