Type anywhere: meet Elecom’s NFC based Android keyboard accessory

This is the first ever NFC based Android Keyboard accessory, made by Elecom. This particular Android keyboard does not require a power source at all – just place your NFC powered Android device on it, and you’re good to go. It uses the NFC IP-1 protocol to connect to the device to any Android smartphone, though you do also have to download Elecom’s ATOK software on Google Play to be able to use it. It is also a bit expensive – at 18,690 Yen (or about Php 9345) it’s not the most affordable of Android keyboards out there.

AVT trade-in promo at the PIMS

Trade in your old, working or non-working navigation devices and get a brand new AVT Navigator for as low as P3,500 at the 2012 Philippine International Motor Show (PIMS), to be held from August 16-19, 2012, at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

While many smartphones and tablets now offer mapping and navigation services, these usually require an internet connection (whether Wi-Fi or broadband) and can drain your device’s battery quickly. Thus, for car buffs who enjoy being on the road, a portable navigation device is still a must-have gadget.

And to make it easier to own a brand new AVT Navigator, 2012 PIMS visitors may trade in old units to avail of hefty discounts on AVT PN models, some going for more than 50% off. In fact, the most affordable model will be priced at P3,500.

For those interested in additional security, the AVT iSTAR portable tracking device will be offered at a very affordable P6,000. This comes with a free android app, while iPhone/iPad owners can view vehicle tracking on a mobile site.

Rounding out the exclusive promotional offers is the 30% discount being given for customized vehicle multi-media systems for various car brands/models. The AVT multimedia head units include navigation, a tv tuner, and other features. Custom head units are available for the Honda CRV and Civic; Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Sonata and Tucson; Subaru Forester and Legacy; Toyota Camry and Prado; and others.

All purchases are eligible for 0-interest installment payments using any major credit card.

AVT (which stands for Audio-Video Technology) specializes in premium audio-visual entertainment systems for mobile applications.  In addition to navigation systems, the company also carries a range of mobile tracking devices for vehicle and personal security.  AVT offers a wide range of in-car mobile electronics, including display monitors, DVD players, digital and analog terrestrial receivers, sound processor/high-power amplifiers, specialist speakers, and AV controllers and accessories to suit all types of in-vehicle installations.  Aside from consumer products that retail in car dealer accessories shops, AVT is also an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for many of the country’s leading car brands.   iNAV is a subsidiary company dedicated to providing mapping support exclusively for AVT navigation devices.

Portable 3D printer that fits in a briefcase

Although printers are getting smaller and more lightweight as compared to the 80s and 90s, most are still bulky and require a lot of setup time. But what about a portable 3D printer? It seems like a concept that will take a while to hit stores, but two MIT students, CADLab’s Ilan Moyer and Nadya Peek of MIT’s Centre for Bits and Atoms, developed such a device, called PopFab. In the embedded video, you can see the students pull out a retractable arm, fix it in place, then connect up a laptop along with the printing head and attached material source. The pair then sit back and watch the device spring into action, etching out the fish design being fed to it by the laptop.

How cost-effective the current model is remains to be seen—it has no price tag as yet, and the MIT students have not spoken about whether they plan on making it commercially available. Based on the video, it seems simple enough for anyone to set up, at least for those who read the manual first.

    Ever been curious about Mars?

Curiosity, Nasa’s latest Mars lander, is minutes away from entering the Martian atmosphere. It’s about to get pretty hairy, as the most critical part of the entire flight is about to happen, but provided everything goes well, it’s going to be one heck of a show. If you want to get in on the action (and maybe wait for a spectacular explosion, possibly) head over to the NASA link HERE to watch the entire thing live. Better hurry. There isn’t much time left!

3D printed exoskeleton becomes child’s “Magic Arms”

While we’re mostly into hard news on the latest updates in the tech universe, we’re also suckers for touching, poignant stories. Take the heartwrenching tale of two-year-old Emma, for instance.

Little Emma was diagnosed at birth with a rare disease called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), which cripples the joints and limbs. This has prevented her from using her arms to play, eat and give her mommy a hug.

Engineers at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children decided to let her try out an exoskeleton they dubbed as the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX). The original material of the WREX was too big and heavy to attach to Emma, so they decided to rebuild the device into a much lighter supportive plastic vest by reproducing its parts with a 3D printer. According to the video, replacing damaged or outgrown parts isn’t going to be a biggie since the engineers can simply print out new parts. Emma refers to the WREX as her “Magic Arms”.

It’s good to be reminded once in a while about the original purpose of technology—to help us out. It’s tear-jerking stories like Emma’s that help us realize that new technology isn’t always about being the flashiest in the market. It’s about making human lives better and easier.

US Military grants USD 6M to develop super sniper system

Have you ever had one of those days where you just had to take a shot with your rifle from a mile away, but the wind and physics in general just wouldn’t cooperate? Yeah, we have too, and we do wish there were an easier way. Fortunately, the US government may soon have the answer to this problem. DARPA, the military research outfit responsible for such awesomeness as BIG DOG has just granted a third-party company six million dollars to come up with a system to aid their marksmen in making critical shots at huge distances while taking into account such things as wind, gravity and other things that snipers usually have to go through years of training to accomplish. There have been several iterations of this system in the past, but they have had their share of problems. DARPA is hoping that this next time will be the answer they are looking for.

Windows 8 shows up on file sharing sites

A day after Microsoft announced that Windows 8 was finally done, a copy of one of the versions of the new operating system showed up in file sharing sites. The version in question is Windows 8 Enterprise N – with the N denoting it is for European users, and does not have a built-in media player to conform to anti-trust rulings of the EU. People who have downloaded the file has vouched for the authenticity of the OS, though has commented this is a non-booting version, meaning pirates must create installation media. Instructions for generating a DVD- or USB flash drive-based installer were posted on some of the file-sharing websites, and available elsewhere on the Internet.

    Dell outs Inspiron 14z

Aside from the high-end XPS 14, Dell also introduced another ultrabook in the market today – the relatively cheaper Inspiron 14z. The Inspiron 14z still has some of the unique design aspects that’s evident in the more luxurious and expensive brother. While it still has the same brushed metal finish on the lid, the Inspiron 14z has a more plastic design inside. It has the same island-style keys as the XPS 14, but we noticed a great deal of flex on the plastic base of the keyboard, something that may not sit well with some people. It’s also a bit chunkier  than your usual ultrabook, but tradeoff there is that you also get a optical disk drive with the purchase. The Inspiron 14z has a 14-inch, 200-nit 1366×768 display. Internally, you’re looking at a 3rd Generation Core i5-3317U (2.6GHz) along with 4GB of DDR3 and a hybrid storage setup composed of a 32GB mSATA SSD drive and a 500GB HDD drive. The Inspiron 14z retails for Php 44,900.

Facebook Stories: An online compilation of users’ interesting FB experiences

    0

The folks over at the Facebook office have just launched Facebook Stories—a new and interesting site that features fascinating stories about users’ experiences with the social network.

“We wanted to create a place where we could celebrate great stories,” shared Facebook’s Tucker Bounds with ABCNews.

The site debuted with a video entitled People You May Know, the moving story of Mayank Sharma from New Delhi who was diagnosed with meningitis at age 27. His condition was worsened with complications and it further led to Hydrocephalus, causing him to suffer from memory loss. Mayank was able to reconnect with old faces and ultimately reconstruct fragments of his past through Facebook’s People You May Know feature. Watch the full video below:

    http://vimeo.com/46441896

While the the first video was uploaded by the Facebook team, the site actually lets you submit your own interesting Facebook stories that you’d like to share to the world. However, according to an article at SlashGear, Facebook claims that not all submissions will be displayed prominently; they will only select the best entries to highlight. Like People You May Know, the overarching theme of submissions this month will revolve around the concept of “Remembering”. SlashGear reports that Facebook will be creating an infographic about the monthly theme at the end of each month.

Other features include a virtual bookshelf filled with selections relevant to the theme, a playlist that features “inspiring artists” and a monthly podcast.

Got a great story to tell? Head on over to the site to share your experiences to the world!

Dell expands ultrabook line in the Philippines, unveils XPS 14

Dell has added the 14-inch XPS model to their lineup at an event at the Makati Shangri-La . The XPS 14 brings a slightly more beefier machine to the fore that’s armed with a lot more oomph than the smaller, 13-inch version.

Externally, you’re looking at an aluminum body that’s similar to the 13, and a bigger 14-inch HD 1600 x 900 resolution screen. There’s two configurations available when it comes to processor speed: a 3rd generation Core i5-3317U processor running at 2.6GHz, and a 3rd generation Core i7-3517U running at 3.0GHz. For memory, you’re looking at 4GB of DDR3 for the Core i5 version, and 8GB of DDR3 for the Core i7 version. Both versions will run with Intel’s Rapid Cache technology (HDD for storage and a SSD for faster boot up times) with the Core i5 version of the 14Z getting a 32GB SSD drive and a 500GB HDD. The Core i7 version will get a 128GB SSD drive and a 500GB HDD. Both devices will run an NVIDIA GeForce GT630M graphics, along with Intel’s own HD Graphics 4000.

The device felt extremely well made during our brief time with it, and felt very well made. The backlit keyboard was spaced evenly, and had good travel which made it a pleasure to type on.

The glass trackpad felt extremely smooth as well, though we don’t have enough time with the unit to say if the trackpad is better than most of the ultrabooks out there today. It is a shame though that the display is not a true HD display – the display only goes up to 1600 x 900 which is frankly, a bit disappointing, considering the price that you are paying for it. We also noticed that the XPS 14 is a bit heavy – it’s not massive per se, but it’s definitely one of the heaviest ultrabooks we’ve managed to handle. Dell has specified that the XPS 14 is around 4 lbs.

Speaking of price, the XPS 14 starts at Php 68,990 for the Core i5 version and goes up to Php 79,990 for the Core i7 version.
