    Review: Asus Transformer Prime

Around this time last year, there were few options to choose from if you wanted a tablet that didn’t bear an Apple logo. Since then, Android tablets have literally exploded in both number and form factor, and now you can get anything from a compact 7-inch tablet to a full sized 10.1-inch deal from a variety of manufacturers. To get noticed in a market that’s fast getting crowded by a flood of devices, a tablet needs to have something special up its sleeve.

Asus’ newly released tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer Prime has that special somethin’ somethin’. Powered by NVIDIA’s newly released Tegra 3 processor and featuring a thinner, sleeker chassis than before, it’s currently one of our favourite tablets yet.

The overall aesthetics of the Transformer Prime is a marked departure from the look of the original. Instead of a textured, plastic back, Asus decided to drape the Transformer Prime in aluminium, which makes the tablet look a lot like their ultrabook offering, the UX21. Not that that’s a bad thing – we absolutely adored the overall design of the UX21, and it’s safe to say that we like how the Transformer Prime looks like too.

The front of the device is dominated by the 10.1-inch Super IPS+ LCD screen that’s capable of 1280 x 800 resolution. The left side holds the volume rocker, while the power button is located on the upper left corner of the tablet.

The device also has an 8-megapixel camera, as well as a smaller, 1.2-megapixel secondary camera located on the front. The bottom of the tablet holds the charging port, as well as the necessary holes to lock the tablet in the accompanying keyboard dock.

Like the original Transformer, the Transformer Prime also has a keyboard that also acts as the device’s secondary battery. The keyboard also features a USB slot and an SD card reader. The keys are a bit small for our liking; though to be honest people with regular sized digits would probably be able to type on it just fine.

Possibly the biggest ace in the hole that the Transformer Prime has over other tablets currently in the market right now is it’s heart – it’s powered by NVIDIA’s quad-core Tegra 3 processor running at 1.3GHz, which undoubtedly makes it the fastest tablet currently out in the local market. Nothing else comes close. There’s also going to be two versions of the Transformer Prime shipping – a 32GB version and a 64GB one.

While the Transformer Prime shipped with Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) when it first came out, an Android 4.0 (ICS) update has already been pushed to the device which our demo received near instantaneously when we first took it out of the box and connected it to the internet.

Our time with the Asus Transformer Prime mirrored our experience with another, ICS powered Android device, as far as navigating the UI is concerned.

Like we said earlier, the Transformer Prime is the fastest commercially available tablet out in the market today, and the synthetic benchmarks prove it. The test scores has already been making rounds on the internet as early as November last year, but it always bears repeating. As you can probably see, the Transformer Prime absolutely demolishes the competition by a fairly large margin.

Since the device is thinner (8.3 vs. 13mm) than the previous iteration, it’s also a bit lighter which makes it easier to use as an e-reader, for example. Also, all that raw horsepower running under the hood translates to an overall smoother user experience both in playing games, browsing the net and running applications.

Battery life for the Transformer Prime clocked in at around 10 hours of moderate use, which pretty much puts the Transformer Prime in the same running with the iPad 2 when it comes to consuming juice. With the keyboard dock attached, the Transformer Prime managed an astounding 17 hours throughout, which is pretty crazy, if you ask us.

Of course, there’s a catch. If you’re the sort of person that just wants the main tablet without the keyboard, you’re out of luck – Asus has said that they will only be offering the 32GB version of the device with the keyboard, which should be hitting retailers now at around Php 32,999. There will be no tablet only bundles available.

That doesn’t mean that that should stop you from buying it of course. It’s design, performance and longevity is an excellent trifecta of features that most tablets can’t match, and for the moment, the Asus Transformer Prime is the king of the hill as far as Android tablets are concerned.

    What’s Hot:

    Thin and light design

    Excellent build quality

    Powerful processor

    Long battery life

    What’s Not:

    Expensive

Only tablet and keyboard bundle is available locally, no tablet only option

    Bottomline:

Asus’ Transformer Prime is currently the best Android tablet that you’ll be able to buy.

Take fun pictures on your iPhone with the Olloclip

If you’re looking to get more from your iPhone 4 and 4s camera, you should check out this neat little accessory called the Olloclip. For sure, the camera on your Apple device will never compete with dedicated digital cameras, but you can still have a lot of fun with it. In fact, most of the pictures that we see on flickr are taken using iPhones, especially with photography apps like Instagram and the like. Although there are a lot of these apps that allow you to tweak your photos, the Olloclip lets you do this from a hardware standpoint as the quick-connect lens solution equips your iPhone 4 or 4s  with a fisheye, wide-angle, and macro lens.

Using the device is pretty straightforward; one side holds the fisheye lens, while the other has the dual wide-angle and macro lenses wherein you unscrew the wide-angle lens to reveal the macro lens. As its name suggests, the accessory is simply clipped onto a bare iPhone 4 or 4s, which means that you will have to remove any casing that you might have on your phone whenever you attach the Olloclip. The lenses can also be used for taking video, and although the effect is supposedly not as dramatic due to the iPhone’s cropping of the field view during video, there is still an enjoyable difference. If you’re into taking artsy photos, the Olloclip can provide you with fun possibilities on your iPhone. You can even use it simultaneously with Instagram or other photography apps for a compounded effect to take Lomography-style pictures.

The Olloclip will cost you USD $69.99 (approximately Php 2,940) and you can visit http://olloclip.com/ to order one or get more information about the product.

    Review: LG Prada 3.0

Tech companies collaborating with well known fashion brands aren’t new. We’ve seen the results of such partnerships in the form of the Dolce & Gabbana Motorola phone, the Porsche Design P´9981 and of course, the first two LG Prada devices. Today, we’re going to be reviewing the third offspring of that glorious collaboration – the LG Prada 3.0.

While the LG Prada 3.0 bears the name of one of Italy’s posh lifestyle brands, the device doesn’t exude the same luxurious feel. Don’t misunderstand; the LG Prada 3.0 is still a top-tier Android device, and its design reflects this – 8.5mm thickness, metallic accents around the bezel, elegant spun aluminium camera and power buttons on top.

Unfortunately, if it wasn’t for the large, Prada branding on the back and front, you’d assume that this particular device was just another regular, hi-end device. You do get a Prada’s trademark Saffiano pattern at the back of the device, so there’s that.

The LG Prada 3.0 bears a 4.3-inch NOVA IPS display that has a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. The display has an impressive 830 nits of luminance, which makes it, as my friend delicately puts it, a damn neon sign, especially in dark environments. The LG Prada 3.0 is powered by a relatively sedate dual-core 1GHz Cortex A9, which means it’s not the fastest smartphone on the block. Imaging duties are taken care of by a 8 megapixel camera on the back, with a smaller, front facing camera on the front for video calling duties.

What really sets the LG Prada 3.0 apart from other devices that have similar specs is the custom UI loaded into the device. While the LG Prada 3.0 still uses Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), LG had taken it upon themselves to heavily modify the UI to match the subdued elegance of the device. The result is probably one of the best looking custom UI’s I’ve seen in a while.

What LG did wasn’t extremely hard or complicated – just white icons on a black background – but the way they managed to integrate it into the whole feel of the device just feels right.

I already knew that the LG Prada 3.0 isn’t the fastest smartphone currently in the market, but I still wanted to know where exactly it lies when it comes to performance. As always, AnTuTu was my benchmark of choice, and the LG Prada 3.0 performed well. Real-world performance basically mirrored the synthetic scores, with the LG Prada 3.0 performing well during its time with me.

As a phone, the LG Prada 3.0 performed well – both outgoing and incoming calls were excellent, with nary a dropped call during our time with it. It also had better than average battery life compared to faster devices, and managed to last about a day and a half with semi-moderate use, a feat that a lot of other smartphones struggle to achieve.

That doesn’t mean that the LG Prada 3.0 is perfect. One of the things I really had an issue with the thing was its keyboard. I don’t know if it’s just tiny or a result of a different layout, but I found myself misspelling text messages more than usual. That, combined with the lack of an autocorrect feature made for some really slow typing.

At first glance the LG Prada 3.0 may seem that it just relies on the Prada brand to sell itself, but a deeper look reveals something more. It’s a solid smartphone that performs well, and even with the small niggles it’s still a particularly fine smartphone for stylish people. The device retails for about Php 29,990.

    What’s Hot:

    Elegant, simple design

    Awesome custom UI

    Extremely bright screen

    Good battery endurance

    What’s Not:

Needs more premium materials in construction

    Small virtual keyboard, no autocorrect

    Middling processor

    A bit expensive

    Bottomline:

It’s certainly not the fastest nor the thinnest, but the LG Prada 3.0 still brings something unique to the table.

Skullcandy showcases the “sickest” headphones this 2012

    0

    ***Mix Master

Famed for its colorful and unique headphones selection, Skullcandy, one of the world’s leading audio brands is keen on its expansion plans in the local scenes.

Filipinos’ inherent love for music is a key factor on why Skullcandy sees the Philippines as a huge growing market. The headphones brand has been around locally for 5 years. It has gained a massive fan base from the action sports market, down to the broad music crowd.

“Filipinos have extensively patronized our products. The love for music and style is so intertwined, it’s fascinating,” says Skullcandy’s Business Development Manager, Kris Altenburger. He adds, “Even Ellen Degeneres confirms (on Twitter) that some of the best singers are actually from this part of the globe. In addition, Filipinos are renowned creators and consumers of music, and there is definitely a natural affinity between the Philippines and Skullcandy.”

Skullcandy’s line of products involves earphones and earbuds, on-ear headphones, and over-ear headphones. Bursting with life and color, these products are not here to just influence style, as their functions are pretty serious too.

Some headphones come with built-in microphones that can be used with multimedia phones, or MP3 players. Similar to the headphones, earphones can be customized for that perfect fit, as some have interchangeable buds. They also offer optimum sound, from controllable subwoofers, to noise-reduction headphones, to iPod controls.

Ron Basilio, Marketing Manager of Rains International Corporation, Skullcandy’s local distributor, shares his thrill for the expansion plans. “We are in touch with many retail outlets, malls, and specialty shops to make Skullcandy accessible for more Filipinos to enjoy. We live and breathe music, so there’s always a need for quality audio products, and that’s what we have for them.”

Skullcandy is now widely available in 59 stores nationwide. This 2012, Rains International projects that it will be located in at least 300 stores within Metro Manila, and 50 stores in the provinces.

“Skullcandy’s partnership with Rains International reinforces our commitment to further expand the brand and align ourselves in markets that reflect our passion for sound, sport, and fashion. We believe Rains has the market experience, knowledge, and reach that will enable our goal of becoming a music and fashion staple among Filipinos,” Altenburger says.

Living up to its mantra, “every revolution needs a soundtrack,” Skullcandy comes fit for everyone with different lifestyles. The skull logo has become an icon, a rebellion that demands a control for a personal music experience.

    Huawei teases quad-core smartphone: Ascend D1 Q

Huawei isn’t exactly the first brand that comes to your mind when people talk about groundbreaking superphones. That doesn’t seem to faze the Chinese brand however, and has been teasing pictures of its new quad-core device, dubbed the Ascend D1 Q around the net. While there aren’t any solid information on what this particular device will bring to the table aside from its aforementioned quad-core processor, we’re guessing that it’ll pack something like an IPS display (or equivalent), ICS and LTE – which to be honest, seems to be where the trend is going to anyway. Check out more pictures of the device in the gallery below.

Rumors about the HTC Endeavor / One X continue to leak online

The alleged specs of the forthcoming HTC Endeavor, which may end up being called the One X, have been leaking out on the internet as of recent. The smartphone is said to be rocking a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz as well as a Super-LCD panel for its 4.7-inch 720p screen display. As expected from HTC, its hardware construction will probably be very solid, and from the pictures we’ve seen, it looks to be a very thin device although we don’t know anything for sure about its actual dimensions just yet.

The unit will feature an 8-megapixel rear camera with a backlit sensor as well as 32GB of internal storage. Music fans will be glad to know that it includes an FM radio, Beats-branded ear-buds, and a five-pin connector believed to be for connecting the phone to a possible Beats audio dock. The smartphone will also be employing Intel’s recently announced XMM 6260 platform, which will provide HSPA+ connectivity. Supposedly though, there will be no microSD slot, no physical navigation buttons, and the phone will utilize a micro SIM. HTC has said that they are aiming to launch the product with a 4.0.5 version of the Android OS and the Sense 4.0 interface. Nothing has been officially announced about this release, but we’ll probably hear more from HTC at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.

BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 update landing on Feb 21

    via Engadget

So we saw a preview of the BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0 update a couple of days back, and we liked what we saw far. What we didn’t like was the lack of a solid release date for the update, despite our nagging efforts to pry one out of the BlackBerry execs at that particular event. It turns out we didn’t have to – a tipster has given Engadget a picture of what looks to be marketing collateral that has a solid Feb. 21 release date for the new update to the OS, though what timezone that Feb. 21 update will show up in is anyone’s guess. We’ll be watching our PlayBook like a hawk come the 21st, and we’ll give you guys a lowdown on what changes RIM has made to it as soon as we’re updated to version two-dot-oh.

As prolific users of the popular social platform, many Filipinos were able to easily share their captured moments via digital images, Thus, Facebook viewers from around the world were treated to amazing photos that featured scenic spots, and colorful cultural snapshots of the Philippines.

This year’s Epson CIC top prize winner in the Philippines is Randall Cipriano who submitted a photo entitled “Light Unseen”. Apple receives patent for MacBook Air, lining up ultrabooks in their crosshairs?

Watch out ultrabook makers (and Intel too): Apple has just been awarded 19 patents, with one of them being the patent on the design of the MacBook Air. Patent No. D654,072 refers to the “ornamental design of an electronic device”, with none other than dearly departed Steve Jobs listed as an inventor. With the awarding of the said patent to Apple, the Cupertino company now has the legal ammunition to start going after similar thin and light designs, which by the way, describes ultrabooks down to a T. The question now is this: is Apple willing to go after ultrabook manufacturers which at current count, includes industry heavyweights like Toshiba, Acer, Asus, HP and Lenovo? More importantly, are they willing to risk a souring of their relationship to Intel for the sake of protecting their IP? Maybe, maybe not. We’re pretty sure Apple isn’t THAT crazy (Intel supplies the chips for their notebooks) though one can argue that Samsung was one of their bossom buddies once upon a time, supplying them with chips for their smartphones and look how that turned out.

Asus unveils factory overclocked 7970’s, will make your wallet quietly weep

It was only a matter of time before manufacturers started making and shipping non-reference models of the AMD Radeon 7970. Asus just informed us that their own interpretations of AMD’s latest and greatest GPU is ready, in the form of the HD7970-DC2T-3GD5  and the HD7970-DC2-3GD5. Aside from slight differences in engine clock and memory clock, the two are nearly identical, featuring numerous heatpipes for better thermal performance, factory overclock out of the box, and liberally sprinkled with exclusive Asus technologies, which include 12-phase Super Alloy Power technology for better overclocking. Of course the lot of you already know that these things won’t come cheap, and you’re right – expect the HD7970-DC2T-3GD5 to retail for Php 29,930, while the HD7970-DC2-3GD5 will carry a sticker price of Php 29,380.
