NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 architecture is now officially now 4-PLUS-1

We’ve oft referred to NVIDIA’s unique Tegra 3 architecture as having a fifth “companion” or “ninja” core before. Now NVIDIA’s taken to officially calling the unique architecture as the 4-Plus-1  quad-core architecture and have slapped a trademark on it for future use. Here’s a bit of a primer on what makes Tegra 3 so special, straight from NVIDIA – “What this revolutionary architecture does is simple: It provides both exceptional processing power and great battery life. It does this by using four powerful CPU cores to handle demanding tasks, such as gaming, and a fifth low-power, battery-saver core to manage less strenuous tasks – like processing e-mail or operating in standby mode.” If you want to learn more about Tegra 3, you can hit up this link for the whitepaper behind it.

    0

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX55 is supposedly the world’s slimmest camera with optical anti-shake, and at its size, is capable of 1080p HD video recording, 3D and panoramic shooting, has a 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.3” OLED touch-screen control panel, and a bunch of picture effects including HDR Painting, Rich-tone Monochrome, Miniature, Toy Camera, Partial Color, Pop Color and Soft High-key. The camera measures only 13.2 mm thick with a height and width of 54.5 x 92.9 mm. The device has only 3 hardware controls: the on/off switch, the shutter button, and the zoom switch. Everything else is controlled using the touch screen on the back while the front side uses a sliding lens cover, both of which help to make the camera as compact and smooth as possible.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX55 is listed at a price of $350 (approximately Php 14,700) and is available in silver, black, purple, and red. Look out for our full review on this product in our April 2012 issue.

New Microsoft video tells you why Google’s apps aren’t right for your business

Microsoft has initiated an all-out campaign against Google earlier today, through a humorous video that it posted on its YouTube channel. “What happens when the world’s largest advertising business tries to sell productivity software on the side ?” The new video, entitled Googlighting, highlights a number of reasons why Google’s App products are inferior to their offering, with the Redmond firm citing that Google Apps is an ever-changing solution with experimental features, has limited and incomplete functionality and where the future of their apps are up in the air. Tom Rizzo wrote on Microsoft’s blog that “Many businesses find that Googlighting also means taking shortcuts, making assumptions about how people *should* work, and generally failing to build and deploy solutions which meet a wide range of business needs. If these concerns and current revelations about Google’s privacy policies have you troubled, this may be a great time to check out Office 365, the online collaboration solution for businesses who don’t want their documents and mail read.” You can watch the opening shot of a potentially long and ugly campaign below.

Samsung S8600 Wave 3 first impressions

We received Samsung’s unique, Bada powered Wave 3 earlier today, and we couldn’t resist taking a few pictures of the device. We’ve handled the past two iterations of the Wave before, back when AMOLED equipped smartphones were few and far between.

The overall look of the Wave 3 stays true to the original devices – sleek, unassuming and easy to hold. You won’t find crazy, stylized, razor thin designs here: the Wave 3 is like the Toyota of smartphones – solid and dependable.

The Wave 3 uses a Super AMOLED capacitive 4-inch touchscreen like so many other devices that Samsung has these days. It utilizes the Korean firm’s own operating system named Bada (Korean for Ocean, Sea) which is now in it’s second version. To be honest, the OS felt extremely similar to Android, especially with the TouchWiz UI layered on top.

Like Android, users will also be able to download apps to use with this particular device, though the app count is significantly lower. The Wave 3 is powered by a single core 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor.

That’s it for now. We’ll be reviewing this particular device on the magazine in the coming months. Check out our upcoming April issue for the whole lowdown.

LG officially announces three new phones ahead of MWC

Korean manufacturer LG has decided to beat the rush of new mobile phone announcements ahead of MWC in Barcelona next week, and has officially announced three new devices ahead of the mobile shindig: the Optimus L3, L5 and L7. From what we could gather, the lowest tier device, the L3, will be packing a 3.2-inch screen and is obviously headed for the lower end of the spectrum, while the L5 will be packing a 4.0 inch screen and aimed at the mid-end. Finally, the L7 which packs a 4.3-inch screen will be heading to the hi-end consumers. LG says that the L3 will be heading to European markets this March, with the L5 and L7 following soon thereafter. Both the L5 and L7 will come with ICS right out of the bat, unfortunately aside from the screen sizes we don’t know what hardware the three devices will be packing.
