Origin PC unleashes the EON17-X gaming laptop

Hardcore PC gamers have generally played games on desktop PCs as opposed to laptops due to the very high system requirements of today’s top video games. While desktop PCs don’t offer the portability that laptops do, they are commonly more powerful and customizable. Featuring a significant upgrade from its EON17, Origin PC has released the EON17-X laptop that’s built especially for gaming, giving avid gamers a portable machine that is even more powerful than most desktop PCs on the market.

The EON17-X is a certified beast, packing an Intel X79 Chipset with 2nd Generation Intel Hexcore processors and up to 32GB 1333Mhz Corsair Quad Channel memory or up to 16GB 1866MHz Corsair Vengeance Quad Channel memory. The laptop comes with a Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M Graphics Card with ORIGIN Professional Overclocking for the best possible gaming experience. It also sports a customizable backlit keyboard with two lighting zones and seven colors and a 17.3-inch 1080p screen display. 4 hard drives can be added to the unit, allowing up to 3 terabytes of hard disk space. Although it is ideal for gaming, the EON17-X can also be used for other resource-intensive functions such as music production, computer-aided design, and other professional work. Although this all sounds very enticing, its USD$2,800+ (approximately Php 117,000) price tag will surely be discouraging. Plus, the unit weights over 12 pounds and measures over two inches thick, which is still infinitely more portable than a desktop gaming PC, but not something you would want to carry around.

WSJ confirms iPad 3 will have LTE, scheduled for March 7 unveil

Another day, another iPad 3 rumor, and this time it comes from the Wall Street Journal. The paper has said that the iPad 3 will have LTE connectivity right off the bat, with two US carriers offering the device when it launches on March 7. The WSJ also said that the new iteration of the iPad will be able to fall back on slower network technology when LTE is not available, which theoretically means that people who import their iPads will be able to use it with our local GSM networks (provided that they manage to make a local SIM work with it, of course). While this is news that we’ve already gone through before, the fact that a large outfit like the WSJ is reporting it means that there’s a fair chance that this particular spec of the iPad 3 is quickly approaching the line of “rumor” to “reality”. We’ll see soon enough, we wager.

Keep safe this Valentine’s Day and all year round

While lovers prepare their romantic treats for Valentine’s Day, spammers find it perfect timing to get to work, according to a security expert at leading secure content and threat management solutions developer Kaspersky Lab.

Kaspersky Lab Senior Spam Analyst Maria Namestnikova said in an entry in the official company blog Securelist, that “spammers look for a way to attract the attention of users, for example using in the subject line and in the body of the text of a mail-out message ‘attractive’ words that prompt users to open a message.“

She said the newest of such “attractors” in the spammer world has become the word “coupon”. She explained that this is often simply substituted for the word “discounts” to attract attention to goods and services.

Namestnikova revealed that another promotion tactic that companies use is “coupon spam” where companies put their offerings on a coupon service and then via spam advertise them to try and reach a bigger audience.

However, the security analyst observed that it’s not very effective. “The level of trust in firms which advertise via spam is very low. Plus, users’ annoyance normally only cancels out any advantages from using such methods instead of increasing it,” she said.

Use of coupon services is a completely legitimate method of advertising. But Namestnikova advised against buying deals through discounted coupon saying “coupon services popularity brings with it potential threats of phishing attacks.”

“Phishers can be interested in users who have funds in their accounts with a coupon service — funds which they can spend immediately when an offer takes their fancy,” she said.

Namestnikova shared these three simple rules to avoid falling into the trap of spammers and phishing attacks:

    1. Don’t open e-mails from coupon services to which you aren’t registered in. First, this secures you against phishing attacks or mail-outs of malicious code. Second, if a spammer’s e-mail turns out to be simply a commercial offer, you reduce the number of responses, making the work of the spammers less profitable.

    2.  If in an e-mail from a coupon service to which you are registered asked you to verify your account via a link or to some other way present your login and password – don’t do this under any circumstances. Remember that large organizations never ask you to send your login and password via e-mail. Any such request must be considered as an attempt at stealing your account.

    3. If you get a message from a large service stating that you’ve obtained some coupons, when in fact you never ordered any, don’t open the message, and more importantly, don’t download anything via the e-mail. There is a high probability that what you do will be malicious.

Apple sues Samsung anew, has a problem with Samsung Galaxy Nexus

To be honest, the amount of litigation flying around against different tech companies is starting to get passé, but hey, lawyers gotta law, right? A new batch of patent infringement suits has been filed by Apple against their Korean arch-nemesis, Samsung – this time the Cupertino company is taking offense at the recently released Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Apple is saying that the newest flagship Google smartphone infringes on patents underlying features customers expect from Apple, like sliding an image to unlock the phone, and by searching information via voice commands. Now, we’re no experts, but we’re pretty sure that voice commands were in existence before Apple’s “revolutionary” addition of Siri to the iPhone 4s, so honestly we’re kind of a loss there. As always, expect this new bout of lawsuits to intensify in the coming months.

    Introducing Chrome for Android

Google launches the Chrome for Android Beta. As always, it continues to bring many preferred features and apps of Chrome to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phones or tablets. Like the desktop version, Chrome for Android Beta is focused on speed and simplicity, but it also features seamless sign-in and sync so you can take web experience can be personalize with convenience, mobility and accessibility.
    Speed
With Chrome for Android, you can search, navigate and browse fast—Chrome fast.  You can scroll through web pages as quickly as you can flick your finger. When searching, your top search results are loaded in the background as you type so pages appear instantly. And of course, both search and navigation can all be done quickly from the Chrome omnibox.

    Simplicity
Chrome for Android is designed from the ground up for mobile devices. We reimagined tabs so they fit just as naturally on a small-screen phone as they do on a larger screen tablet. You can flip or swipe between an unlimited number of tabs using intuitive gestures, as if you’re holding a deck of cards in the palm of your hands, each one a new window to the web.

One of the biggest pains of mobile browsing is selecting the correct link out of several on a small-screen device. Link Preview does away with hunting and pecking for links on a web page by automatically zooming in on links to make selecting the precise one easier.

And as with Chrome on desktop, we built Chrome for Android with privacy in mind from the beginning, including incognito mode for private browsing and fine-grained privacy options (tap menu icon, ‘Settings,’ and then ‘Privacy’).

You can now bring your personalized Chrome experience with you to your Android phone or tablet. If you sign in to Chrome on your Android device, you can:

    • View open tabs: Access the tabs you left open on your computer (also signed into Chrome)—picking up exactly where you left off.
    • Get smarter suggestions: If you visit a site often on your computer, you’ll also get an autocomplete suggestion for it on your mobile device, so you can spend less time typing.
    • Sync bookmarks: Conveniently access your favorite sites no matter where you are or which device you’re using.

Chrome is now available in Beta from the Android Market, in select countries for phones and tablets with Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich

Motorola introduces the Droid 4 smartphone

The Motorola Droid 4 was released this month being one of the few smartphones that still sport a physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard for those who prefer having the feel of hardware buttons over virtual ones. Its keyboard has LED edge-lit keys for use in the dark, and its display is shielded against scrapes, scratches, and water attacks.  The device runs on the Android Gingerbread OS and packs a lot of power with a dual-core 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM. It also features an 8-megapixel primary auto-focus rear-facing camera with LED flash, capable of recording 1080p at 30fps, which is a lot better than what most smartphones are capable of in today’s market. It also has an HDMI output so you can play videos on an external device.

The 127 x 67.3 x 12.7mm body weighs in at 178.9g and comes with a TFT capacitive 4-inch touch screen display. What may separate this smartphone from the rest though, is its connectivity. The unit is capable of Wi-Fi, LTE , HSDPA, HSUPA, GPRS, and EDGE connections, some of which are capable of delivering lightning fast download speeds and internet connections. The Droid 4 comes with 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for up to 32GB of additional space, while its battery life is about 204 hours for stand-by 12.5 hours for talk-time.

The Droid 4 is expected to be available in the Philippines with a price tag of around Php 28,000 – 32,000.

    Dell XPS 14z launched, priced

With all the massive ultrabook news and release dates lately, we’d probably forgive you if you forget manufacturers are still making regular ol’ notebooks. Dell is one such company, and has launched their XPS 14z notebook today at the M Cafe in Makati. This 14-inch notebook promises to deliver blisteringly fast performance in a chassis that’s comparable to most 13-inch notebooks.

The XPS 14z features a body made out of anodized aluminum, is powered by Intel’s Core series of processors and uses an NVIDIA GeForce GT 250M for discrete graphics.  The overall design of the notebook is actually pretty tasteful and elegant, with the device sporting nice rounded corners and a brushed aluminum anodized finish. The XPS 14z also uses a chicklet style keyboard that’s extremely comfortable to type on. It’s overall thickness isn’t in crazy ultrabook territory, but for what you’re getting, its 23mm thickness is actually pretty good.

There will be two processor choices available for the XPS 14z – a Core i5 deal that’s priced at Php 65,150 and a Core i7 model priced at Php 69,590. We think it’s priced to high, and realistically the device only caters to tech junkies and enthusiasts who have money to splurge on such a high-priced gadget. We’re hopefully getting our demo unit soon, and we’ll give you a lowdown on how the notebook fares in real-world conditions as soon as we can.

Nokia N9 spotted running Android 4.03

We’ve always had a soft spot for Nokia’s first and only MeeGo offering, the N9. There’s no denying that Nokia’s efforts on the hardware side of things were more than up to par, sadly, the device was severely limited because of the use of a stillborn mobile OS. Mobile developer Alexey Roslyakov would have none of that, and seems to have successfully managed to make the N9 load and boot Android 4.03, aka Ice Cream Sandwich. Of course, the port isn’t perfect – there’s still a lot of bugs to be squashed (like making it connect to the internet, for one) though the demo video of the device that’s been making the rounds in YouTube has us hopeful for a solid, usable port in the future. Who knows, it may invigorate the ailing smartphone’s sales when the port goes official.

3D Fashion: Fusing fashion and tech beautifully

    0

Whoever says fashion and technology does not mix is clearly mistaken – and it’s not just in the latest “fashion” phones and gadgets – even a bit of math, geometry, and “technology” can be infused together to make one very fashionable (and wearable) collection.

Arena Page, student at the London College of Fashion, showcases her “Simple Complexity Complex Simplicity” – a collection of womenswear which used 3D modeling software. The designs which began as 3D models were then flattened to become a 2D pattern and then put together in it’s original 3D.

And you don’t even need to wear 3D glasses to appreciate the pieces.

LG Optimus Vu spotted in the wild, side-by-side pics with Galaxy Note

Remember the LG Optimus Vu that the Korean company teased earlier this week? Well, some nice blurry side-by-side photos against its natural 5-inch rival, the Samsung Galaxy Note have just surfaced in the interwebs. The difference in the aspect ratio is immediately clear once you see them both beside each other. The Galaxy Note’s 5.3-inch, 1280×800 screen uses a 16:9 aspect ratio, while the Optimus Vu’s 5-inch screen uses a 4:3 aspect ratio, comparable to early boob-tubes and Android devices. It’s still not clear though what the Optimus Vu is running under its unique exterior – we reckon we’ll know more once the device is officially unveiled at MWC.

Perfect Harmony with PRADA Phone by LG 3.0

LG Electronics Philippines hosted a press event today at the Makati Shangri-La to unveil its new PRADA phone by LG 3.0, the third handset from the PRADA and LG collaboration following the LG 1.0 and 2.0. The device delivers LG’s technology with PRADA’s trademark chic simplicity design, which makes it very stylish and powerful at the same time. It’s loaded with a 1.0 GHz Dual-Core processor and runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS while sporting a bright 4.3-inch 800-nit NOVA glossy touch screen on the front and PRADA’s signature Saffiano pattern on the back. The phone also includes an 8 megapixel camera.

The press event’s program began with a few words from Sung Woo Nam, managing director for LG Philippines and Faith Mijares, product marketing manager for the mobile division of LG Philippines, followed by a video presentation to officially launch the new product.  The executives of the company also went around personally thanking the attendees, while everyone was encouraged to do a hands-on inspection of the new PRADA phone. The phone’s black-and-white PRADA themed user-interface is unique and the unit itself is very surprisingly light at a mere 138g in weight. The unit was also very thin at 8.5mm and slightly wider and taller than most phones at 127.5mm x 69mm. Its large screen made it easier to use the qwerty touch pad for various functions. All in all, the new PRADA phone by LG 3.0 is a true beauty in a way that other gadgets aren’t due to its perfect harmony between classy PRADA design and state-of-the-art technology.

Saying nasty things on Twitter can possibly land Indonesians in jail

Indonesia doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to freedom of speech, but now a the government is now looking at a new law that can now land a citizen in jail for 12 years for Tweeting. Indonesia’s Communication and Information Minister has just declared that anyone caught tweeting illegal content could see jail time of up to 12 years. Illegal content in this case include pornography, gambling, threats, fraud, and blasphemy. Minister Tifatul Sembiring said that “If they violate the laws, they will be punished.” “Principally, every account user could be held responsible by tracing his position and device.” he added.

So Indonesians, the next time you feel the need to lambast someone over Twitter, don’t. Instead, take a chill pill, relax, do some meditating or something along those lines, because a wrong tweet can land you more than a decade’s worth of jail time.

    Kodak shutting down camera business

The hits just keep coming for Kodak. After announcing earlier last month that they are filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the beleaguered brand has now announced it is exiting the camera business, which includes their digital cameras, photo-frames and pocket camcorders. This comes as a bitter and ironic blow to the 131-year old company, as Kodak was the one who invented the digital camera back in 1975. The company will complete the move in the second half of this year, which leaves licensing, printers and photo labs as its main source of income. The company says that it will still honor warranties of its products as long as they are valid.
