Holiday shoppers in California and Virginia tracked via their cellphones

Here’s a bit of news that should delight mall owners and absolutely terrify people with tin hats on their heads – it seems that two malls in Virginia and California are using shopper’s phones to track them as they move through their mall. The technology, called Footpath Technolog,y aims to help mall operators precisely identify the foot traffic of people as they shop, to allow them to precisely pinpoint where to put shops, amenities and other mall niceties. Armed with the information, mall owners can now now precisely tell where the most amount of foot traffic is and deploy stores accordingly. And while the technology can pinpoint a shopper within a few meters, Footpath’s company, Path Intelligence, says that the information taken from shopper’s cellphones are completely anonymous, with no personal data being taken. The malls also tell their customers that they are being tracked in advance via multiple signs scattered throughout the mall, with instructions to turn off their phone if they want to opt out.

Leaked ROM for BlackBerry Bold 9900 adds Wi-Fi hotspot support

    1

Android users have always had a leg up over BlackBerry users in terms of functionality, especially when it came to sharing their data connection to other devices via the Wi-Fi hotspot functionality present in the latest builds of Android. Well, BlackBerry Bold 9900 users need not be envious, as a leaked ROM from RIM  (version 7.1.0.74) purportedly brings Wi-Fi hotspot functionality to the device. Crackberry also reports that it theoretically should also bring the BlackBerry Tag feature (NFC) to the mix, though that hasn’t been confirmed as of yet. If you’re the sort that knows your way around the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, you can download the ROM on the links below to test it out on your own device. Don’t forget to tell us how it is, ‘mmkay? Just don’t blame us when something goes wrong.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 Plus hands-on and first impressions

    1

Samsung’s first tablet, the Galaxy Tab, was the company’s first ever entry into the world of slates. Since then, the company has produced tablets in a multitude of sizes, from 10.1 to 8.9, and has dabbled in the smartphone-tablet hybrid genre that the recently released Galaxy Note belongs to. Samsung apparently is revisiting the device that got their tablet efforts off the ground in the form of the Galaxy Tab 7 Plus.

The Tab 7 Plus takes a lot of design cues from it’s bigger brother, the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The white back and silver plastic trimmings are there, along with a thin profile of 9.9mm which is an improvement over the old Tab’s 12mm thickness. The 7-inch screen has improved as well, and though it retains the old display resolution of the original (600 x 1024), the Tab 7 Plus now uses a PLS LCD capacitive touchscreen rather than a TFT based one.

Internally, the Tab 7 Plus is better too – it sports a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor with Android 3.2 right out of the bat, instead of Froyo that was in the original.

The Tab 7 Plus still retains the original’s 3-megapixel camera, though the front facing camera has received a slight upgrade to 2 megapixels as opposed to the original’s 1.3.

The Tab 7 Plus is also capable of taking a SIM card, and is fully 3G capable.

That’s it for now, we’ll post our full review of the device in about a week’s time.

Acer will raise notebook prices by 2-3% says paper, Asus to follow

We knew it wouldn’t take long till the hard drive shortage caused by the floods in Thailand would affect prices of devices that used HDDs, and sadly, here it is. Chinese-language Apple Daily reports that have reported that Acer is looking at raising notebook prices by NT$500-700 (US$16-23) which is about 2-3% for their newly made stock of notebooks for December. Another Taiwanese company, Asus, is also looking at raising the prices of their notebooks, though by how much is still anybody’s guess. Lin has pointed out that Acer’s HDD stock for November was almost depleted, meaning their new notebooks will now be made with the higher priced HDD whose value has risen because of the shortages. We’ve also heard of anecdotal evidence of local stores raising hard drive prices, so if you didn’t heed our advice to buy gadgets before the prices rose, it’d be best to hold of on your purchase until the prices stabilize sometime in Q2 of 2012.

Take a look “Into the Minds of Women Who Game Online”

    0

I was never a big “online” gamer but I did love to play videogames along with the rest of the boys during the days of Atari, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and Play Station 1 (I stopped there). And even though I still like to play Final Fantasy on my DS and Angry Birds (with a vengeance) on my iPod Touch, I don’t think I can truly consider myself a gamer. But these stats by GameHouse might just be accurate if I were to look at how videogames affected my life.

‘Into the Minds of Women Who Game Online’ shows an illustrated chart examining the lives of those who play online games, 55% of which are women. According to the infographic, female online gamers seem more social, more likely to be in a relationship, and have a more “active” sex life than with their female non-gaming counterparts. Women who also play online games tend to (paradoxically enough) be more active when it comes to engaging in a form of physical exercise, contrary to the belief that gamers just sit around all day and become susceptible to heart attacks.

With the aforementioned stats, you can totally put me under “female gamer.”

YouTube has a new look; better Google+ and Facebook integration

    0

We noticed something new with our YouTube account today. Seems like the site has gone through some major overhaul, and now sports a improved homepage that makes it easier for you to track your friends activity through a multitude of social networking sites. There are now three main elements of the site: the left column where you’ll see all account related things (your channel, subscriptions, connected social networking accounts), the middle column where you’ll be seeing your friend’s activity (stuff your friends shared, liked and favorited) and the right column where YouTube suggests video for you to watch. One thing that we noticed was that once you connect your Facebook account to your YouTube, your friends will be able to see your activity on the site (what you watched, favorited and liked) similar to the “frictionless” sharing mantra that other sites are now rolling out. Thankfully it seems you can opt out of the whole “share everything what you’re doing on YouTube” thing if you wanted to and just log-out and watch videos anonymously. Do you like the changes YouTube has made? Sound off in the comments.

Smart and Orange successfully conducts Next Generation Hotspot tests

Smart has just announced that they and Orange have successfully performed the first live roaming transaction using the latest Wi-Fi technologies for the deployment of Next Generation Hotspots (NGH).  The trials for NGH represent a leap in making NGH a reality. NGH for the uninitiated, is a new leap in Wi-Fi technology, which allows seamless, automatic logins into a service provider’s Wi-Fi service without the user having to manually search and connect, much like how a mobile phone connects to cell sites.

According to Cisco, one of the proponents of Next Generation Hotspot, the new wireless technology helps to ensure a superior user experience with secure and seamless authentication and roaming. During the NGH Trial facilitated by WBA, mobile phones equipped with Smart SIM cards were able to connect instantly to Orange WiFi without the need to manually join the network.

“This opens up a lot of possibilities not only for Smart and Orange subscribers, but for the billions of mobile users in the world,” said Smart Chief Wireless Advisor Orlando B. Vea. “With the right business model and proper deployment, we would be able to make the Next Generation Hotspot yet another means of bringing the power of the Internet into the hands of every Filipino,” he added.

Smart plans to deploy the new technology in the middle of next year.

ABSOLUT Legacy: limited edition coffee table book

For over 30 years, ABSOLUT Vodka has achieved unparalleled stature in the art of risk-taking. In a market where most vodka ads were loaded with heavy text and a photo of a man ready to engage in a brawl, it seemed a losing effort to produce an advertisement that showed and said so little. In a bold move by ABSOLUT Vodka, the brand began producing ads that showcased the bottle photographed against a neutral background, and utilizing witty two-worded headlines for its captions.

Breaking the rules was a staple principle for the brand, as ABSOLUT Vodka started commissioning visionary artists to lead their campaigns. Legendary artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Nam June Paik have headlined the long-running series of collaborations between ABSOLUT and cutting-edge artists. Countless thought-provoking series of ABSOLUT Vodka ads have been produced, and among the most popular ones were the ABSOLUT Cities series where each landmark city is highlighted in an interpretation of an ABSOLUT Vodka ad.

Today, over 1,500 ABSOLUT Vodka ads have already been created. All of which are considered to be daring, humorous, and innovative.

Now, the rich heritage and artistry that ABSOLUT Vodka has been cultivating for over 30 years has been revealed with the official launch of the ABSOLUT Legacy Book held last night at the Marriott Hotel Manila. Select media and artists have been presented with copies of the limited edition book containing a compilation of 400 of the most engaging ABSOLUT Vodka ads produced. Considered priceless, the ABSOLUT Legacy book is a true collector’s piece, not made commercially available to the buying public.

Pernod Ricard Philippines, Inc. is the exclusive importer and distributor of ABSOLUT Vodka.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is finally getting a native email client….in 2012

We were as baffled as everyone else when RIM decided to release the PlayBook without a native email client, calendar or contact manager which are, to be completely honest, the main reasons why people buy BlackBerries in the first place. If you’re one of the few people who actually own a PlayBook, you’ll be happy to know that the native email client will be landing for RIM’s tablet offering in February of 2012, along with a myriad of software updates which include an Android app converter. The information surfaced at the Blackberry Innovation forum, where BlackBerry Cool managed to grab a video and a few shots of the new client. The email client feels familiar, as it uses the same split-screen layout as other email clients for tablets, which means it’ll be ridiculously easy to use. Will the update boost sales for the tablet? That’s a bit harder to say.
